• How to decouple an app's agile development from a database using BDUF?

  G'day, I was reading the article "Database as a Fortress" by Dan Chak from the excellent book "97 Things Every Software Architect Should Know" (sanitised Amazon link) which suggests that databases should not be designed using an agile approach. There's an SO question on agile approaches and databases "Agile development and database changes" which has some excellent answers covering agile development approaches. In fact, one of the answers supplies a brilliant idea of what's needed for each update of the DB. ;-) But after reading Dan Chak's article, I am left wondering if an agile approach is really suitable for large scale systems. This of course leads on to the question of how best to decouple an agile approach for the application that is interacting with the BDUF database design without adding complicated translation layers in the final design employed? • C++ : Lack of Standardization at the Binary Level

  Why ISO/ANSI didn't standardize C++ at the binary level? There are many portability issues with C++, which is only because of lack of it's standardization at the binary level. Don Box writes, (quoting from his book Essential COM, chapter COM As A Better C++) C++ and Portability Once the decision is made to distribute a C++ class as a DLL, one is faced with one of the fundamental weaknesses of C++, that is, lack of standardization at the binary level. Although the ISO/ANSI C++ Draft Working Paper attempts to codify which programs will compile and what the semantic effects of running them will be, it makes no attempt to standardize the binary runtime model of C++. The first time this problem will become evident is when a client tries to link against the FastString DLL's import library from a C++ developement environment other than the one used to build the FastString DLL. Are there more benefits Or loss of this lack of binary standardization?

• Tutorial for texture mapping a map onto an Open GL ES sphere?

  I'm not looking for a library or even open source code. I want to learn how to do this on my own. Where do I start to find an online tutorial, a book chapter, or other educational material for generating a polygonal model of a 3D sphere suitable for feeding to Open GL ES on an iPhone, and then mapping the polygons to some sort of 2D map data so I can texture map the sphere? Is there some sort of software tool (blenders? mayan?) with a tutorial on how to do generate this data? Where is the best place to start?

For example, you can add a method (with a default implementation) to an abstract class without breaking old implementations of the class". What does it mean (especially what means "breaking old implementations of the class")? Appreciate if anyone could show me a sample why from this perspective abstract class is better than interface? thanks in advance, George

• "Circuit breaker" for net.msmq?

  Hi, The Circuit Breaker pattern, from the book Release It!, protects a service from requests while it is failing (or recovering). The net.msmq binding used with transactions give us nice retry and poison message capabilities. But I am missing the implementation of such a "Circuit breaker" pattern. A service is put under even heavier load by retries while it is already in a failure condition (like DB connectivity issues causing loads of blocked threads etc.). Anyone knows about a behavior extension or similar that explicitly closes the service host when defined failure thresholds have been exceeded? Cheers, Alex

• Is Pex (Test generation) really usefull tool?

  Yes, it is possible to generate tests on boundary values for functions like "Sum" or "Divide". Pex is a good tool here. But more often we create tests on business behaviour. Let's consider example from classic Beck's tdd book: [Test] public void ShouldRoundOnCreation() { Money money = new Money(20.678); Assert.AreEqual(20.68,money.Amount); Assert.AreEqual(2068,money.Cents); } Can this test be generated? No :) 95 % of tests in my projects check business logic, and can not be generated. Pex (Especially in pair with Moles) can give 100% code coverage, but a high code coverage rate of a test suite does never indicate, that code is well tested - It only gives false confidence that everything is tested. And this is very dangerous. So, the question is - Is Pex really usefull tool?

• How can I manipulate the strip text of facet plots in ggplot2?

  I'm wondering how I can manipulate the size of strip text in facetted plots. My question is similar to a question on plot titles, but I'm specifically concerned with manipulating not the plot title but the text that appears in facet titles (strip_h). As an example, consider the mpg dataset. library(ggplot2) qplot(hwy, cty, data = mpg) + facet_grid( . ~ manufacturer) The resulting output produces some facet titles that don't fit in the strip. I'm thinking there must be a way to use grid to deal with the strip text. But I'm still a novice and wasn't sure from the grid appendix in Hadley's book how, precisely, to do it. Also, I was afraid if I did it wrong it would break my washing machine, since I believe all technology is connected through The Force :-( Many thanks in advance.

My apologies if I come off as being extremely lazy but I need to make efficient use of my time and make sure am not just swallowing any garbage of the web. Therefore I am looking for the best and most informative and with a fair bit of detail for the Reflection chapter in .Net. Reflection is something that comes up time and time again and I want to extend my reading from what I know already from the official 70-536 book. I'm not a big fan of MSDN but at the moment that's al I'm using. Anyone got any other good published reading material off the inter web that can help revision for the entrance exam??? I need to save data in minutes but User have privilege to choose will his input be in minutes, days or hours. So i have to do if loop. I now how if loop works but i don't know how to wite it in grails. I was thinking something like this: n=1 if(params.type=Dani){ n= 3600 }else if(params.type=Sati) { n=60 } def minute=params.minute*n but how to call that choosen input "Dani"? I can't write Params.type=Dani. Does if loop go in controller in my case?

• Symfony2 : How to make the php_intl extension available for Symfony2?

  I'm trying to follow this documentation on Symfony : http://symfony.com/doc/current/book/forms.html ok so here is my thing, I've externalised my form and created a specific form class for handling the process and being able to reuse it. So what happen when I submit the form, whatever the info are okay or not for my class, I get this fatal Error : Fatal error: Call to a member function setAttribute() on a non-object in C:\Program Files (x86)\wamp\www\QNetworks\vendor\symfony\src\Symfony\Component\Form\Extension\Core\DataTransformer\NumberToLocalizedStringTransformer.php on line 130 Call Stack I'm running with php 5.3.9 and my intl extension is installed and activated BUT when I run the app/check.php command I see : [[WARNING]] Checking that the intl extension is available: FAILED * Install and enable the intl extension (used for validators) * So I don't understand what the problem with this extension. Should I reinstall it ? When I go here : http://php.net/manual/en/intl.requirements.php I see tht i can install the PECL or the ICU library, but i don't know if I should and if there is any relation with my problem .. • How to auto-include all headers in directory

  I'm going through exercises of a C++ book. For each exercise I want to minimize the boilerplate code I have to write. I've set up my project a certain way but it doesn't seem right, and requires too many changes. Right now I have a single main.cpp file with the following: #include "e0614.h" int main() { E0614 ex; ex.solve(); } Each time I create a new class from an exercise, I have to come and modify this file to change the name of the included header as well as the class i'm instantiating. So my questions are: Can I include all headers in the directory so at least I don't have to change the #include line? Better yet, can I rewrite my solution so that I don't even have to touch main.cpp, without having one file with all the code for every exercise in it?

  i received a big book full of processes. i was thinking about the end user (they will be lawyers) and decided the best GUI would be showing activity diagrams or business processes. It reminded me Quickbooks and how non-accountants can successfully use it and understand accounting processes. i began doing research before sending my project to a bunch of programmers: is there some open source solution? can i use MS Visio libraries? which UML tool is programable? what about Eclipse and its modeling tools? etc etc the key points here are: relationships between events, artifacts, actors, etc should be stored in a database. processes or steps in a process should be easily modified by updating the database do this sounds too crazy? (should I explain a bit more why it must be programmed this way?)

• Help Me Understand C++ Header files and Classes

  OK, So I am trying to transition from intermediate Delphi to C++ Object Oriented programing. I have read Ivar Horton's book on visual C++ 2010. I can pull off the simple console applications no problem. I get the language itself (kinda). Where I am struggling is with headers and classes. I also understand what header files and classes do in general. What I am not getting is the implementation when do I use a header or a class? Do I need to create classes for everything I do? Do my actual work functions need to be in header files or in CPP files? I'm lost on the proper uses of these and could use some real world guidance from more experienced programmers. I am trying to transition to windows applications using the MFC if that is helpful.

  Hi, I'm using django-uni-forms to display my fields, with a rather rudimentary example straight out of their book. When I render the form fields using <form>{%csrf_tag%} {%form|as_uni_form%}</form>, everything works as expected. However, django-uni-form Helpers allow you to generate the form tag (and other helper-related content) using the following syntax -- {% with form.helper as helper %}{% uni_form form helper%}{%endwith%} -- This creates the <form> tag for me, so there's nowhere to embed my own CSRF_token. When I try to use this syntax, the form renders perfectly, but without a CSRF token, and so submitting the form fails every time. Does anyone have experience with this? Is there an established way to add the token? I much prefer the second syntax, for re-use reasons. Thanks!

• Top tips for designing GUIs?

  A while back I read (before I lost it) a great book called GUI Bloopers which was full of examples of bad GUI design but also full of useful tidbits like Don't call something a Dialog one minute and a Popup the next. What top tips would you give for designing/documenting a GUI? It would be particularly useful to hear about widgets you designed to cram readable information into as little screen real-estate as possible. I'm going to roll this off with one of my own: avoid trees (e.g. Swing's JTree) unless you really can't avoid it, or have a unbounded hierarchy of stuff. I have found that users don't find them intuitive and they are hard to navigate and filter. PS. I think this question differs from this one as I'm asking for generalist tips

Question 1: How do I create static library using gcc/g++ ?How do I make my app link against it. Question 2: How to specify it in the makefile, linking against static and dynamic libs, assuming that both libraries have header files Summary: I have been using makefiles and libraries for years, written by someone else. Thus every time I modified it, I simply cut-and-pasted things around, without really understanding it. • Looking to eventually build a smartphone app...

  Hi all- I'm a young, inexperienced programmer (I've had a year of Java, some MATLAB, and HTML/CSS in school) but I've decided that to get better, I'm making it my goal to produce a simple smartphone app of some kind this year- probably either webOS or Android since I'm on a PC and can't afford a Mac just to write an iPhone app. So my question is, where do I start? I've read the threads about How to Write for Android and such, but I'm not sure I have enough Java experience to just jump right in. And then there's webOS which is based on JavaScript, correct? I guess I'd just like some input from more experienced folks. I have some Barnes and Noble book credit I'm looking to get rid of too, so if there's a guide you think would be useful, feel free to request. tl;dr: Programming newbie ultimately wants to build a simple smartphone app. Where do I start?

• Books on OpenGL ES targeted towards the iPhone

  There are a few posts on this site about OpenGL and the iPhone. Some even on books but I think you'll find this question is a bit different. I've searched and searched and have come to the conclusion that there are currently no books that specifically cover OpenGL ES on the iPhone platform. There are books that cover OpenGL ES [2.0] (note: the linked book covers OpenGL ES 2.0 but the iPhone uses OpenGL ES 1.1 which, I understand, is not backward compatible)... but they only have a small section for the iPhone (if any). What I want to know, is if anybody knows of any books that are forthcoming that specifically cover OpenGL ES 1.1 on the iPhone?

  I just watched a video of Douglas Crockford's presentation about his 2009 book JavaScript: The Good Parts. In the video, he explains that the following block is dangerous because it produces silent errors: return { ok: false }; And that it should actually be written like this (emphasising that although seemingly identical the behavioural difference is crucial): return { ok: false }; You can see his comments around 32 minutes into the video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQVTIJBZook&feature=player_embedded#!&start=1920 I have not heard this before, and was wondering if this rule still applies or if this requirement in syntax has been overcome by JavaScript developments since this statement was made.
