• Faster forking of large processes on Linux ?

  What's the fastest, best way on modern Linux of achieving the same effect as a fork-execve combo from a large process ? My problem is that the process forking is ~500MByte big, and a simple benchmarking test achieves only about 50 forks/s from the process (c.f ~1600 forks/s from a minimally sized process) which is too slow for the intended application. Some googling turns up vfork as having being invented as the solution to this problem... but also warnings about not to use it. Modern Linux seems to have acquired related clone and posix_spawn calls; are these likely to help ? What's the modern replacement for vfork ? I'm using 64bit Debian Lenny on an i7 (the project could move to Squeeze if posix_spawn would help).

• Web services Authentication Jungle

  I have been doing some research lately about best approaches to authenticating web services calls (REST SOAP or whatever). But none of the Approaches convinced me... But i still can't a make a choise... Some talk about SSL and http basic authentication -login/password- which just seems weird for a machine (i mean having to assign a login/password to a machine, or is it not ?). Some others say API keys (seems like these scheme is more used for tracking and not realy for securing). Some say tokens (like session IDs) but shouldn't we stay stateless (especially if in REST style) ? In my use case, when a remote app is calling one of our web services, i have to authenticate the calling application obviously, and the call must - if applicable - tell me which user it impersonates so i can deal with authorization later. Any thoughts ?

• View a SYS.XMLTYPE returned from an Oracle function, using PL/SQL

  I have an Oracle function that dynamically creates an XML document, and returns it in a SYS.XMLTYPE value. I want to run a query from SQL Developer that calls that function and prints the document (either via a select, or dbms_output - I don't care). But all the examples/documentation seem to refer to querying XML columns in tables, and I can't seem to get the syntax right for my particular usage. I'd like something like this: declare x SYS.XMLTYPE; begin x := my_package.my_function(); select x.getclobval() from x; -- doesn't work! end; How can I print out the value of the XML type variable 'x' in the above code?

• Yet another C# Deadlock Debugging Question

  Hi All, I have a multi-threaded application build in C# using VS2010 Professional. It's quite a large application and we've experienced the classing GUI cross-threading and deadlock issues before, but in the past month we've noticed the appears to lock up when left idle for around 20-30 minutes. The application is irresponsive and although it will repaint itself when other windows are dragged in front of the application and over it, the GUI still appears to be locked... interstingly (unlike if the GUI thread is being used for a considerable amount of time) the Close, Maximise and minimise buttons are also irresponsive and when clicked the little (Not Responding...) text is not displayed in the title of the application i.e. Windows still seems to think it's running fine. If I break/pause the application using the debugger, and view the threads that are running. There are 3 threads of our managed code that are running, and a few other worker threads whom the source code cannot be displayed for. The 3 threads that run are: The main/GUI thread A thread that loops indefinitely A thread that loops indefinitely If I step into threads 2 and 3, they appear to be looping correctly. They do not share locks (even with the main GUI thread) and they are not using the GUI thread at all. When stepping into the main/GUI thread however, it's broken on Application.Run... This problem screams deadlock to me, but what I don't understand is if it's deadlock, why can't I see the line of code the main/GUI thread is hanging on? Any help will be greatly appreciated! Let me know if you need more information... Thanks to everyone for their suggestions! Much appreciated! I've marked the answer that solved my initial problem of determining where on the main/UI thread the application hangs (I handn't turned off the "Enable Just My Code" option). The overall issue I was experiencing was indeed Deadlock, however. After obtaining the call-stack and popping the top half of it into Google I came across this which explains exactly what I was experiencing... http://timl.net/ This references a lovely guide to debugging the issue... http://www.aaronlerch.com/blog/2008/12/15/debugging-ui/ This identified a control I was constructing off the GUI thread. I did know this, however, and was marshalling calls correctly, but what I didn't realise was that behind the scenes this Control was subscribing to an event or set of events that are triggered when e.g. a Windows session is unlocked or the screensaver exits. These calls are always made on the main/UI thread and were blocking when it saw the call was made on the incorrect thread. Kim explains in more detail here... http://krgreenlee.blogspot.com/2007/09/onuserpreferencechanged-hang.html In the end I found an alternative solution which did not require this Control off the main/UI thread. That appears to have solved the problem and the application no longer hangs. I hope this helps anyone who's confronted by a similar problem. Thanks again to everyone on here who helped! Roo -----------------------------------------------------SOLUTION II-------------------------------------------------- Aren't threading issues delightful...you think you've solved it, and a month down the line it pops back up again. I still believe the solution above resolved an issue that would cause simillar behaviour, but we encountered the problem again. As we spent a while debugging this, I thought I'd update this question with our (hopefully) final solution: The problem appears to have been a bug in the Infragistics components in the WinForms 2010.1 release (no hot fixes). We had been running from around the time the freeze issue appeared (but had also added a bunch of other stuff too). After upgrading to WinForms 2010.3, we've yet to reproduce the issue (deja vu). See my question here for a bit more information: 'http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4077822/net-4-0-and-the-dreaded-onuserpreferencechanged-hang'. Hans has given a nice summary of the general issue. Is there a current, stable, enterprise-ready implementation out there?

But when you're developing an app, it's up to you to implement these things based on low-level information about the number and locations of touches. It seems like this is a prime candidate for a library. You would register a delegate, set some parameters like multi-tap interval and swipe threshold, and get calls like swipeStarted/Ended, pinchStarted/Ended, multiTap, etc. Does such a library exist?

• Python and urllib2: how to make a GET request with parameters

  I'm building an "API API", it basically a wrapper for a in house REST web service that the web app will be making a lot of requests to. Some of the web service calls need to be GET rather than post, but passing parameters. Is there a "best practice" way to encode a dictionary into a query string? e.g.: ?foo=bar&bla=blah I'm looking at the urllib2 docs, and it looks like it decides by itself wether to use POST or GET based on if you pass params or not, but maybe someone knows how to make it transform the params dictionary into a GET request. Maybe there's a package for something like this out there? It would be great if it supported keep-alive, as the web server will be constantly requesting things from the REST service. Thanks!

• C functions invoked as threads - Linux userland program

  I'm writing a linux daemon in C which gets values from an ADC by SPI interface (ioctl). The SPI (spidev - userland) seems to be a bit unstable and freezes the daemon at random times. I need to have some better control of the calls to the functions getting the values, and I was thinking of making it as a thread which I could wait for to finish and get the return value and if it times out assume that it froze and kill it without this new thread taking down the daemon itself. Also I could do other things like resetting the ADC before restarting. Is this possible? Pseudo example of what I want to achieve: (function int get_adc_value(int adc_channel, float *value) ) pid = thread( get_adc_value(1,&value); //makes thread wait_until_finish(pid, timeout); //waits until function finishes/timesout if(timeout) kill pid, start over //if thread do not return in given time, kill it (it is frozen) else if return value sane, continue //if successful, handle return variable value and continue Thanks for any input on the matter, examples highly appreciated!

• Linux and I/O completion ports?

  Using winsock, you can configure sockets or seperate I/O operations to "overlap". This means that calls to perform I/O are returned immediately, while the actual operations are completed asynchronously by separate worker threads. Winsock also provides "completion ports". From what I understand, a completion port acts as a multiplexer of handles (sockets). A handle can be demultiplexed if it isn't in the middle of an I/O operation, i.e. if all its I/O operations are completed. So, on to my question... does linux support completion ports or even asynchronous I/O for sockets?

• NSAutoreleasePool carrying across methods?

  I'm building an iPhone application where I detach some threads to do long-running work in the background so as not to hang the UI. I understand that threads need NSAutoreleasePool instances for memory management. What I'm not sure about is if the threaded method calls another method - does that method also need an NSAutoreleasePool? Example code: - (void)primaryMethod { [self performSelectorInBackground:@selector(threadedMethod) withObject:nil]; } - (void)threadedMethod { NSAutoreleasePool *aPool = [[NSAutoreleasePool alloc] init]; // Some code here [self anotherMethod]; // Maybe more code here [aPool drain]; } - (void)anotherMethod { // More code here } The reason I ask is I'm receiving errors that objects are being autoreleased with no pool in place, and are "just leaking." I've seen other questions where people didn't have autorelease pools in place at all, and I understand why an autorelease pool is needed. I'm specifically interested in finding out whether an autorelease pool created in (in this example) threadedMethod applies to objects created in anotherMethod.

• Trying to get simple jquery animations on a site I created in Dreamweaver

  Hey guys, another question. I'm trying to do some basic jQuery stuff for my final project. I'll be using it to modify my already existing site created in Dreamweaver a few months ago. However, no matter how I source the framework, it just won't take regardless of whether I host my own copy or link to someone else's like Google's. I'm including my jQuery function calls within my already existing .js file that includes some auto generated functions. I also tried creating a new .js specifically for my jQuery functions and still nothing. I realize this is vague, but any tips? Do I need another framework for jQuery to work off of to make animations like .fadeIn() or .slideDown()? Thanks guys and gals!

• Using Sessions in WCF Services called from Silverlight

  (Using Visual Studio 2008, and Silverlight 3) -I've really looked around for this one, and now I'm just confused by all the solutions that simply won't work for me. I'm trying to call a WCF service from a Silverlight client, which is no problem, but I can't get the service to handle sessions (I want to remember a few things about the callee between calls) I've gathered that basicHttpBinding is no good for sessions, and I haven't managed to make wsHttpBinding work... what's the matter? I would have thought this was a pretty basic thing people would want in their WCF services, or am I just completely muddle-headed not to see how it can be done?

• jQuery timer, ajax, and "nice time"

  So for this is what I've got: $(document).ready(function () { $("#div p").load("/update/temp.php"); function addOne() { var number = parseInt($("#div p").html()); return number + 1; } setInterval(function () { $("#div p").text(addOne()); }, 1000); setInterval(function () { $("#geupdate p").load("/update/temp.php");} ,10000); }); So this grabs a a UNIX timestamp from temp.php and puts into into #div p, and then adds 1 to it every second, and then every 10 seconds it will check the original file to keep it up to speed. My problem is that I need to format this UNIX timestamp into a format such as "1 day 3 hours 56 minutes and 3 seconds ago", while also doing all the incrementation and ajax calls. I'm not very experienced with jquery/javascript, so I might be missing something basic.

• Best practice for partial updates in a RESTful service

  I am writing a RESTful service for a customer management system and I am trying to find the best practice for updating records partially. For example, I want the caller to be able to read the full record with a GET request. But for updating it only certain operations on the record are allowed, like change the status from ENABLED to DISABLED. (I have more complex scenarios than this) I don't want the caller to submit the entire record with just the updated field for security reasons (it also feels like overkill). Is there a recommended way of constructing the URIs? Do I use GET, POST, PUT or is there no agreed way of doing these kind of things? When reading the REST books RPC style calls seem to be frowned upon. Thanks Frank

  I am experiencing some very odd timing behavior from a function I wrote. If I wrap my function inside another empty container function, it gets a 3x speedup. > tic; foo(args); toc time elapsed: ~140 seconds >tic; bar(args); toc time elapsed: ~35 seconds Here's the kicker - the definition of bar(): define bar(args) foo(args) end Is there some sort of optimization that gets triggered in MATLAB for nested function calls? Should I be adding a dummy function to every function that I write?

  I've noticed that google app engine seems to have a fair amount of downtime where they place the datastore into read-only mode. Frequently this downtime is in the middle of the day. Is this something that is happening only during early development, or is this something that I can expect to be always be occurring? I've developing an application that helps small businesses handle their operations. One thing that it does is take appointments, another is route phone calls. I'd like some suggestions on how to handle times when the datastore is in read-only such as: What if our client is on the phone with the customer and is taking down an appointment and the datastore is in read-only? It would not be acceptable to ask the client to come back later to save, especially if its in the middle of the day. What if there is an incoming call and the application can not store the record or properly route the call due to database writes being unavailable? How are these types of issues normally handled?

• WPF update binding in a background thread

  I have a control that has its data bound to a standard ObservableCollection, and I have a background task that calls a service to get more data. I want to, then, update my backing data behind my control, while displaying a "please wait" dialog, but when I add the new items to the collection, the UI thread locks up while it re-binds and updates my controls. Can I get around this so that my animations and stuff keep running on my "please wait" dialog? Or at least give the "appearance" to the user that its not locked up?

• How can I detect 'any' ajax request being completed using jQuery?

  I have a page where I can insert some javascript / jquery to manipulate the output. I don't have any other control over the page markup etc. I need to add an extra element via jquery after each present on the page. The issue is that the elements are generated via an asynchronous call on the existing page which occurs after $(document).ready is complete. Essentially, I need a way of calling my jquery after the page has loaded and the subsequent ajax calls have completed. Is there a way to detect the completion of any ajax call on the page and then call my own custom function to insert the additional elements after the newly created s ?

Considering that resources are already defined in routes.rb I was expecting it to work easily, bute somehow when I click the save button it calls the create method, instead of update, using a POST http request. Any ideas?
