• What is the simplest, but solid, interface from WinForms to a SQL Server database?

  Hi, If I wanted to have my data in SQL Server, but wanted to use a thick client WinForms application for users, what would be the best practice way to have calls occurring from WinForms to database? And how simple is this? I guess I'm trying to gauge to what extent there are issues with this approach and one needs to go for some (a) middle tier with web services, or (b) have to go asp.net or something. I really just have a simple app that needs a database and I'll only have a 10 - 30 clients on a LAN/WAN network that would be connecting in.

• Remove innerHTML from div

  I'm trying to clear the div's innerHTML before repopulating it. I tried removeData() but once that's called, when I try to add the data, I get nothing from the next line after remove whereas if I remove the removeData() it's fine again. I just want to clear out any previous content in that div before I re-populate it. divToUpdate.removeData(); //clean out any existing innerHTML div content first divToUpdate.html(data); It looks like it never gets to my divToUpdate.html(data) for some reason after it calls that removeData();

Considering that resources are already defined in routes.rb I was expecting it to work easily, bute somehow when I click the save button it calls the create method, instead of update, using a POST http request. Any ideas?

I want to create the function prup which basically calls derp and ignores the (x,y) passed in. I need something like bool purp(int x, int y){ return derp(); } but want to avoid creating it as a member function, and rather just create it locally if possible?

• Page loading effect with jquery

  Hello all, Is there a way to use jquery (or other method) to display a loading div while page loads? I have a table that is populated using PHP/MySQL and can contain several thousand rows. This is then sorted using the tablesorter plugin for jquery. Everything works fine, however the page can sometimes take 4-5 seconds to fully load and it would be nice to display a 'loading...' message within a div which automatically disappears when whole table is loaded. I have heard of loadmask plugin for jquery - would this be suitable for my needs and if not any alternative? No AJAX calls are being made while loading this table if thats relevant. • Debugging different projects in VS6

  Hi, I have 3 projects in a VS6 workspace. One is the main program, which calls - depending on configuration - one or both other progams. To call the other programs a exe is executed. If I want to debug and set breakpoints in one of the subsequent programs, I get an error that breakpoints could not be set and have been deactivated. Are there any VS6 settings I can check? This is a legacy tool and neither the architecture nor VS6 can be changed. To make things worse I am not very familiar with VS6.

• Avoding multiple thread spawns in pthreads

  Hi StackOverflow, I have an application that is parallellized using pthreads. The application has a iterative routine call and a thread spawn within the rountine (pthread_create and pthread_join) to parallelize the computation intensive section in the routine. When I use an instrumenting tool like PIN to collect the statistics the tool reports statistics for several threads(no of threads x no of iterations). I beleive it is because it is spawning new set of threads each time the routine is called. How can I ensure that I create the thread only once and all successive calls use the threads that have been created first. When I do the same with OpenMP and then try to collect the statistics, I see that the threads are created only once. Is it beacause of the OpenMP runtime ? Thanks.

• How can I detect 'any' ajax request being completed using jQuery?

  I have a page where I can insert some javascript / jquery to manipulate the output. I don't have any other control over the page markup etc. I need to add an extra element via jquery after each present on the page. The issue is that the elements are generated via an asynchronous call on the existing page which occurs after $(document).ready is complete. Essentially, I need a way of calling my jquery after the page has loaded and the subsequent ajax calls have completed. Is there a way to detect the completion of any ajax call on the page and then call my own custom function to insert the additional elements after the newly created s ?

• Could not see memory being released on closing MFC modal dialog that hosts wpf user control using HW

  This is in continuation with my last question posted "Continuous Memory leak while using WpfHWndSource" I have to load an WPF User Control in an MFC Modal Dialog that is being invoked from the ocx control. For this I have created a MFC Regular Dll(Mixed Mode Regular dll with clr option enabled), I have created a modal dialog which will host wpf user control using HWndSource. This exported dialog is placed as a child Dialog of the above MFC dialog that is being invoked from the ocx. Ny intermediate dialog uses C++/Cli code. When the main MFC dialog is closed, I am deleteing the ptr reference of the intermediate dialog created on the heap. In the the dipose of the .Net User Control, I have set most of the references that I have created to null, unsubscribed to the events (to avoid weak refernces), unbinded from the propertes(by using clear binding). Called delete on the HwndSource and the user control(which basically calls the dispose method). But I do not see complete memory being released. Any help would be greatful.

  In Java, constructors cannot be recursive. Compile time error: "recursive constructor invocation". Let's assume that we did not have this restriction. Things to keep in mind: The return type of a constructor is void. Since it is a void method you can't harness the complete power of recursion. A constructor can invoke itself (or any other constructor) using this(). But a "call to this must be first statement in constructor" We could use non local data between consecutive calls to still have some possible gain from recursive constructors. Would there be any benefit from allowing recursive constructors?

  I am using Protocol Buffers and OpensSSL to generate, HMACs and then CBC encrypt the two fields to obfuscate the session cookies -- similar Kerberos tokens. Protocol Buffers' API communicates with std::strings and has a buffer caching mechanism; I exploit the caching mechanism, for successive calls in the the same thread, by placing it in thread local memory; additionally the OpenSSL HMAC and EVP CTX's are also placed in the same thread local memory structure ( see this question for some detail on why I use thread local memory and the massive amount of speedup it enables even with a single thread). The generation and deserialization, "my algorithms", of these cookie strings uses intermediary void *s and std::strings and since Protocol Buffers has an internal memory retention mechanism I want these characteristics for "my algorithms". So how do I implement a common scratch memory ? I don't know much about the rdbuf of the std::string object. I would presumeably need to grow it to the lowest common size ever encountered during the execution of "my algorithms". Thoughts ?

One of the answers to a C macro question talks about the "X macro" or "not yet defined macro" idiom. This involves defining something like: #define MAGIC_LIST \ X(name_1, default_1) \ X(name_2, default_2) \ ... Then to create, say, an array of values with named indices you do: typedef enum { #define X(name, val) name, MAGIC_LIST #undef X } NamedDefaults; You can repeat the procedure with a different #define for X() to create an array of values, and maybe debugging strings, etc. I'd like a link to a clear explanation of how this works, pitched at someone who is passably familiar with C.   I have translated the MailChimp provided MailChimp List Subscribe Form plugin for wordpress. I used poEdit to edit. At wp-config.php I have language set as ar_SA. Which works for the themes I have used in two Bilingual sites. But the mo file had to be renamed to ar.mo I got two problems: While updating the catalog poEdit crashes. But I could save the .po and generated .mo successfully. The translated .mo doesn't appear for the confirmation success or error messages through the Ajax calls which its supposed to. • WCF Web Services - Multiple Hop impersonation on the same server

  Hi Folks I have 3 web services, all located on the same server. My Client calls Service A, which impersonates the client to call Service B, and all is well. Now, I want to impersonate the caller of service B (which is my username) to call Service C. When I use the same technique as before (AllowedImpersonationLevel = Impersonate, user.Impersonate()), The user doesnt get passed to service C. Instead, Service C sees the user as the user I am running it under in IIS. Is there anything special I need to do to get this working? Is this a delegation issue? • Question about the lifecycle of a simple Android application

  Hi, I've got a simple application with 3 activities: -the first contains a search box which calls a web service and show the results (restaurants) below in a listview -when a restaurant is clicked another activity is started showing the description of the restaurant and a button "show map" -when the button "show map" is clicked, guess what, the map is shown in a third activity. All the data is loaded in the first activity by a web service (restaurant descriptions and coordinates), and data required by each activity is passed in a bundle using "intent.putExtra". Now everything seems to run smoothly when clicking on the back button (eg. clicking on the back button from the map resumes the "restaurant description" activity with all data set properly), while I haven't done anything about the lifecycle yet. Why? Are all variables saved automatically? Should I use onSaveInstanceState() and onRestoreInstanceState() anyway? Thanks Jul

  How does one stream files, html or custom AJAX responses from web parts? Our current quick-and-very-dirty solution is to make the web part call the current page with certain query parameters, which the web part checks and instead of performing normal load it writes the required things to output and calls response end. This sounds bad since SharePoint might load other web parts and execute their code before reaching our web part. The web part is configured with data source settings which means the streaming context must be specific to the web part so it can acquire the correct data source settings.

• What mutex/locking/waiting mechanism to use when writing a Chat application with Tornado Web Framewo

  We're implementing a Chat server using Tornado. The premise is simple, a user makes open an HTTP ajax connection to the Tornado server, and the Tornado server answers only when a new message appears in the chat-room. Whenever the connection closes, regardless if a new message came in or an error/timeout occurred, the client reopens the connection. Looking at Tornado, the question arises of what library can we use to allow us to have these calls wait on some central object that would signal them - A_NEW_MESSAGE_HAS_ARRIVED_ITS_TIME_TO_SEND_BACK_SOME_DATA. To describe this in Win32 terms, each async call would be represented as a thread that would be hanging on a WaitForSingleObject(...) on some central Mutex/Event/etc. We will be operating in a standard Python environment (Tornado), is there something built-in we can use, do we need an external library/server, is there something Tornado recommends? • Asp.net cached objects staying in memory

  I have a asp.net web forms app that uses System.Web.Caching.Cache to cache xml data from a number of web services for 2 hours. webCacheObj.Remove(dataCacheKey) webCacheObj.Insert(dataCacheKey, dataToCache, Nothing, DateTime.Now.AddHours(2), Nothing) Every 90 minutes a Microsoft Search Server hits a particular (spider) page which calls the code to put the objects into the cache. The issue i have is that over a period of time, the memory usage of the application grows exponentially. Lets say that in a week, the memory usage of the application pool grows to over 1gb. I'm using IIS7 and no application pool recycling is currently enabled.

• Calling a void async. - Event based pattern, or another method?

  I have a class that basically stores files in amazon s3. Here is what it looks like (simplified) public class S3FileStore { public void PutFile(string ID, Stream content) { //do stuff } } In my client app, I want to be able to call: var s3 = new() S3FileStore(); s3.PutFile ("myId", File.OpenRead(@"C:\myFile1")); s3.PutFile ("myId", File.OpenRead(@"C:\myFile2")); s3.PutFile ("myId", File.OpenRead(@"C:\myFile3")); I want this to be an asynchronous operation - I want the S3FileStore to handle this (i don't want my caller to have to execute PutFile asynchronously so to speak) but, i want to be able to trap exceptions / tell if the operation completed for each file. I've looked at event based async calls, especially this: http://blogs.windowsclient.net/rendle/archive/2008/11/04/functional-shortcuts-2-event-based-asynchronous-pattern.aspx However, I can't see how to call my PutFile (void) method? Are there any better examples?

• Importing ctype; embedding python in C++ application

  I'm trying to embed python within a C++ based programming language (CCL: The compuatational control language, not that any of you have heard of it). Thus, I don't really have a "main" function to make calls from. I have made a test .cc program with a main, and when I compile it and run it, I am able to import my own python modules and system modules for use. When I embed my code in my CCL-based program and compile it (with g++), it seems I have most functionality, but I get the import error: ImportError: /usr/lib/python2.6/lib-dynload/_ctypes.so: undefined symbol: PyType_GenericNew Can someone explain this to me and how to go about solving it? It seems like I've linked the objects correctly. Thanks.
