  • Sorting by some field and fetching whole tree from DB

    - by Niaxon
    Hello everyone, I am trying to do file browser in a tree form and have a problem to sort it somehow. I use PHP and MySQL for that. I've created mixed (nested set + adjacency) table 'element' with the following fields: element_id, left_key, right_key, level, parent_id, element_name, element_type (enum: 'folder','file'), element_size. Let's not discuss right now that it is better to move information about element (name, type, size) into other table. Function to scan specified directory and fill table work correctly. Noteworthy, i am adding elements to tree in specific order: folders first and only files. After that i can easily fetch and display whole table on the page using simple query: SELECT * FROM element WHERE 1=1 ORDER BY left_key With the result of that query and another function i can generate correct html code (<ul><li>... and so on). Now back to the question (finally, huh?). I am struggling to add sorting functionality. For example i want to order my result by size. Here i need to keep in my mind whole hierarchy of tree and rule: folders first, files later. I believe i can do that by generating in PHP recursive query: SELECT * FROM element WHERE parent_id = {$parentId} ORDER BY element_type (so folders would be first), size (or name for example) After that for each result which is folder i will send another query to get it's content. Also it's possible to fetch whole tree by left_key and after that sort it in PHP as array but i guess that would be worse :) I wonder if there is better and more efficient way to do such thing?

  • Been asked a dozen times, but no luck from what I've read. Prevent Anchor Jumping on page load

    - by jasenmp
    I'm currently working with WP theme that can be found here: sanjay.dmediastudios.com I'm currently using 'smooth scroll' on my page, I'm attempting to have the page smoothly scroll to the requested section when coming from an external link (for instance coming from the blog page takes you to sanjay.dmediastudios.com/#portfolio) from there I want the page to start at the top and THEN scroll to the portfolio section. What's happening is it briefly displays the 'portfolio section' (anchor jump) and THEN resets to the top and scrolls down. It's driving me nuts :(. Here is the code I'm using: Click function for smooth scroll: $(function() { $('.menu li a').click(function() { if (location.pathname.replace(/^\//, '') == this.pathname.replace(/^\//, '') && location.hostname == this.hostname) { var target = $(this.hash); target = target.length ? target : $('[name=' + this.hash.slice(1) + ']'); if (target.length) { $root.animate({ scrollTop: target.offset().top - 75 }, 800, 'swing'); return false; } } }); //end of click function }); The page load function: $(window).on("load", function() { if (location.hash) { // do the test straight away window.scrollTo(0, 0); // execute it straight away setTimeout(function() { window.scrollTo(0, 0); // run it a bit later also for browser compatibility }, 1); } var urlHash = window.location.href.split("#")[1]; if (urlHash && $('#' + urlHash).length) $('html,body').animate({ scrollTop: $('#' + urlHash).offset().top - 75 }, 800, 'swing'); }); Any help would be MUCH appreciated.

  • IE7 & IE8 error executing function with ajax

    - by Yahreen
    I am loading an ajax page which executes an HTML5 video player script. The function for the Flash fallback is html5media(); : //Load 1st Case Study $("#splash").live('click', function (e) { $(this).fadeOut('slow', function () { $('#case-studies').load('case-study-1.html', function() { html5media(); //initiate Flash fallback }).fadeIn(); }); e.preventDefault(); }); This initial page load works fine in IE7 & IE8. The problem is once this page is loaded, there are links to 4 more videos which are loaded in again using ajax. I use this function: //Switcher function csClients(url, client) { $("#case-studies").fadeOut('slow', function() { $('#case-studies').load(url, function () { html5media(); //initiate Flash fallback }).fadeIn(); }); } //Page Loader $("#cs-client-list li.client1 a").live('click', function(e) { csClients('case-study-1.html', 'client1'); e.preventDefault(); }); Originally I was using return false; but none of the sub-page Flash videos would load in IE7. When I switched to preventDefault, the videos loaded in IE7 but still not in IE8. I also get a weird error in both IE7 & IE8 with no helpful feedback: Error on Page: Unspecified error. / (Line 49) Code: 0 (Char 5) URI: http://www.mysite.com This is line 49 in my index page: <section id="case-studies" class="main-section"> I have a feeling it has to do with calling html5media(); too many times? • Using sortable_element in Rails on a list generated by a find()

    - by Eli B.
    Hey all, I'm trying to use the scriptaculous helper method sortable_element to implement a drag-and-drop sortable list in my Rails application. While the code for the view looks pretty simple, I'm really not quite sure what to write in the controller to update the "position" column. Here's what I've got in my view, "_show_related_pgs.erb": <ul id = "interest_<%=@related_interest.id.to_s%>_siblings_list"> <%= render :partial => "/interests/peer_group_map", :collection => @maps, :as => :related_pg %> </ul> <%= sortable_element("interest_"+@related_interest.id.to_s+"_siblings_list", :url => {:action => :resort_related_pgs}, :handle => "drag" ) %> <br/> And here's the relevant line from the partial, "interests/peer_group_map.erb" <li class = "interest_<%=@related_interest.id.to_s%>_siblings_list" id = "interest_<%=related_pg.interest_id.to_s%>_siblings_list_<%=related_pg.id.to_s%>"> The Scriptaculous UI magic works fine with these, but I am unsure as to how to change the "position" column in the db to reflect this. Should I be passing the collection @maps back to the controller and tell it to iterate through that and increment/decrement the attribute "position" in each? If so, how can I tell which item was moved up, and which down? I couldn't find anything specific using Chrome dev-tools in the generated html. After each reordering, I also need to re-render the collection @maps since the position is being printed out next to the name of each interest (I'm using it as the "handle" specified in my call to sortable_element() above) - though this should be trivial. Any thoughts? Thanks, -e

  • jQuery && Google Chrome

    - by Happy
    This script works perfectly in all the browsers, except Google Chrome. $(document).ready(function(){ $(".banners-anim img").each(function(){ var hover_width = $(this).width(); var hover_height = $(this).height(); var unhover_width = (hover_width - 30); $(this).width(unhover_width); var unhover_height = $(this).height(); $(this).closest("li").height(unhover_height); var offset = "-" + ((hover_height - unhover_height)/2) + "px"; $(this).closest("span").css({'position':'absolute', 'left':'0', 'top':'25px', 'width':'100%'}); $(this).hover(function(){ $(this).animate({width: hover_width, marginTop: offset}, "fast") },function(){ $(this).animate({width: unhover_width, marginTop: 0}, "fast") }); }); }); Chrome doesn't recognize changed image attributes. When width of the img changes, height also changes. Even not in Chrome.. $(this).width(unhover_width); var unhover_height = $(this).height(); unhover_height gives 0. Full code of this script (html included) - unhover_height Please help to fix this. Thanks.

  • HTML+CSS: 'a' width doesn't work

    - by Budda
    I have the following code: CSS part: <style type="text/css"> .menu { width:200px; } .menu ul { list-style-image:none; list-style-type:none; } .menu li { margin:2px; } .menu A { height:25px; width:170px; background:url(./images/button-51.png); padding:2px 5px ; } .menu A:link { height:25px; width:170px; background:url(./images/button-51.png); padding:2px 5px ; } </style> HTML part: Everything work fine, but when I add 'DOCTYPE' element in the beginning of the HTML document: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> the width of 'a' element is not taken into account.   • How do I run an array through an IF statement in rails?

    - by codyvbrown
    I am creating an application that highlights user messages from a stream based on whether or not the user has been 'vouched'. It works fine if it's setup for a single author. For example controller: @vouch = Vouch.last.vouched_user_nickname view: <% Twitter::Search.new(params[:id]).each do |tweet| %> <li> <%= image_tag tweet.profile_image_url %> <% if @vouch.include? tweet.from_user %> <div class="flit_message_containerh"> <u> <a href="http://twitter.com/<%= tweet.from_user %>"> <%= tweet.from_user %></a></u> <%= linkup_mentions(auto_link(h tweet.text)) %> <div class="time_ago"> <%= link_to distance_of_time_in_words_to_now(tweet.created_at) , tweet %> <% else %> <div class="flit_message_container"> <u> <a href="http://twitter.com/<%= tweet.from_user %>"> <%= tweet.from_user %></a></u> <%= linkup_mentions(auto_link(h tweet.text)) %> <div class="time_ago"> <%= link_to distance_of_time_in_words_to_now(tweet.created_at) , tweet %> <% end %> But I'm having trouble doing it for multiple user nicknames. @vouch = Vouch.find(:all, :select => "vouched_user_nickname", :group => 'vouched_user_nickname' ) Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I'm a rails noob.

  • choose javascript variable based on element id from jquery

    - by phoffer
    I feel like this is a simple question, but I am still relatively new to javascript and jquery. I am developing a site for a touch interface that uses unordered lists and jquery .click functions to take input data. I have a section to input a m:ss time, with 3 divs, each containing a list of digits for time. I need to get the input for each column and set it as a variable. I originally designed the inputs to change form inputs, because I didn't understand javascript very much. It was easy to change the 3 hidden inputs by using div id's, but I can't figure out how to do it now with javascript variables. Here is my original jquery code... $("div#time>div>ul>li").click(function() { var id = $(this).parents(".time").attr("name"); var number = $(this).html(); $("input#"+id).val(number); }); The last line sets one of 3 hidden inputs equal to whatever was clicked. I need to make it so separate variables take the inputs, then I can manipulate those variables however I want. Here's a short snippet of the html, to have an idea of how jquery grabs it. <div id="time"> <h1>Time</h1> <div name="minute" class="time" id="t_minute"> M : <ul> The full time html is here: link text Thanks everyone! I've been using SO to answer many questions I've had, but I couldn't find something for this, so I figured I would join, since I'm sure I will have more questions along the way.

  • Creating a Simple C# Wrapper to clean up code

    - by Tangopop
    I have this code: public void Contacts(string domainToBeTested, string[] browserList, string timeOut, int numberOfBrowsers) { verificationErrors = new StringBuilder(); for (int i = 0; i < numberOfBrowsers; i++) { ISelenium selenium = new DefaultSelenium("LMTS10", 4444, browserList[i], domainToBeTested); try { selenium.Start(); selenium.Open(domainToBeTested); selenium.Click("link=Email"); Assert.IsTrue(selenium.IsElementPresent("//div[@id='tabs-2']/p/a/strong")); selenium.Click("link=Address"); Assert.IsTrue(selenium.IsElementPresent("//div[@id='tabs-3']/p/strong")); selenium.Click("link=Telephone"); Assert.IsTrue(selenium.IsElementPresent("//div[@id='tabs-1']/ul/li/strong")); } catch (AssertionException e) { verificationErrors.AppendLine(browserList[i] + " :: " + e.Message); } finally { selenium.Stop(); } } Assert.AreEqual("", verificationErrors.ToString(), verificationErrors.ToString()); } My problem is i would like to make it so that i can use the code surrounding the 'try' many many times in the rest of the code. I think it has something to do with wrappers, but i can't get a simple answer for this from the web. So in simple terms the only piece of this code which changes is the bit between the try {} the rest is standard code that i have currently used over 100 times and is turning out to be a pain to maintain. Hope this is clear, many thanks.

  • jQuery: part of a function not executing

    - by SODA
    Hi. I have a tabbed setup on the page and I want to automatically make corresponding menu tab highlighted as well as corresponding content div show depending on # hash. Example: http://design.vitalbmx.com/user_menu/member_profile_so.html -- no hash, opens 1st tab http://design.vitalbmx.com/user_menu/member_profile_so.html#setup -- #setup, should open "Setup" tab As you can see it works for highlighting "Setup" tab. But content div does not change. The script is below: var tab_content_current = 1; switch (window.location.hash) { case '#activity': tab_content_current = 1; break; case '#friends': tab_content_current = 2; break; case '#photos': tab_content_current = 3; break; case '#videos': tab_content_current = 4; break; case '#setup': tab_content_current = 5; break; case '#forum': tab_content_current = 6; break; case '#blog': tab_content_current = 7; break; case '#comments': tab_content_current = 8; break; case '#favorites': tab_content_current = 9; break; case '#profile-comments': tab_content_current = 10; break; default: tab_content_current = 1; } if (tab_content_current != 1) { change_active_tab (tab_content_current); } function tabs_toggle (id) { if (id != tab_content_current) { change_active_tab (id); tab_content_current = id; } } function change_active_tab (id) { $j('.profile_tabs li').removeClass('active'); if (id < 8) $j('.profile_tab_'+id).addClass('active'); $j('.profile_content').hide(); $j('#profile_content_'+id).fadeIn(); } Note that it works when you actually click menu tabs. Any help to fix this problem would be greatly appreciated.

  • jQuery menu animation

    - by bomortensen
    Hi Stackoverflow, I'm building a website where I'm using jQuery to animate a horizontal tabbed menu. What I want to achieve can be seen here: / link removed / If you hover/mouseover the "Link 1" tab, you'll see that a white div is expanding. Each of the tab menu items are a styled li-tag. What I want to do is, that when you hover/mouseover i.e. the "Link 2" tab, the white div contracts and then expands again with content related to "Link 2" instead of "Link 1". Also, the "Link 1" tab should be expanded by default (i.e. when you just entered the site) Does any of you jQuery ninjas out there know how to do this? What I currently have is this: <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function(){ var $div = $('#divtest'); var height = $div.height(); $div.hide().css({ height : 0 }); $('#forside').hover(function () { if ($div.is(':visible')) { $div.animate({ height: 0 }, { duration: 200, complete: function () { $div.hide(); } }); } else { $div.show().animate({ height : height }, { duration: 200 }); } return false; }); }); </script> Do I need to have 4 different div's which expands/contracts for every mouseover? If i'm not being clear about what my problem is, please say so and I'll try to elaborate :) Thanks in advance!

  • Need Help on JavaScript to Trim

    - by MacpaLtd
    I am facing some problems with my server space. The images are using all the space from the server, making it slow. As it is an eCommerce website, it cannot be slow or we lose customers. If I have the following: SKU's : ABC123-001 > catName > Phone ABC753-851 > catName > MAC AT1233-098 > catName > PC How can I use trim to make it the following: SKU's : 123 > catName > Phone 753 > catName > MAC 1233 > catName > PC Which I would use in the following script: <script type="text/javascript"> $(function(){ var sku = $("#ProductBreadcrumb ul li:last").text(); $(".ProductThumbImage img").attr('src','http://img.example.com/images/'+catName+'/'+sku+'.jpg'); }); </script> So, basically, the output for the picture link would be: http://img.example.com/images/phone/123.jpg http://img.example.com/images/mac/753.jpg http://img.example.com/images/pc/1233.jpg So yeah, first problem I have to face is.. How can I trim it? I am not familiar with JavaScript so any help would be really appreciated :D

  • jQuery, Ajax & PHP submit multiple forms dilemma

    - by user557563
    This is a very simple form that I have found on the web (as I am a jQuery beginner). <!-- this is my jquery --> <script> $(document).ready(function(){ $("form#submit_wall").submit(function() { var message_wall = $('#message_wall').attr('value'); var id = $('#id').attr('value'); $.ajax({ type: "POST", url: "index.php?leht=pildid", data:"message_wall="+ message_wall + "&id="+ id, cache: false, success: function(){ $("ul#wall").prepend(""+message_wall+"", ""+id+""); $("ul#wall li:first").fadeIn(); alert("Thank you for your comment!"); } }); return false; }); }); </script> <!-- this is my HTML+PHP --> some PHP ... while($row_pilt = mysql_fetch_assoc($select_pilt)){ print <form id="submit_wall"> <label for="message_wall">Share your message on the Wall</label> <input type="text" id="message_wall" /> <input type="hidden" id="id" value="'.(int)$row_pilt['id'].'"> <button type="submit">Post to wall</button> </form> and down below is my PHP script that writes to mySQL. It is a pretty straight forward script. However, it is getting little complicated when I submit it. Since I have more than one form on my page (per WHILE PHP LOOP), thus when I submit - only the FIRST form gets submitted. Furthermore, any other subsequent forms that I submit - data is being copied from the first form. Is there any jQuery functions that clear the data? - or is there a better solution. Thanks, Nick

  • JavaScript two-dimensional Array to PHP

    - by vi
    Hi I have to send a two-dimensional JavaScript Array to a PHP page. Indeed, I'm working on a form-builder, in which the user can add or remove fields. These fields are added (or removed) using JavaScript (jQuery). When the user is done and hit a 'publish' button, I have to get all the fields concerned and send them to a PHP page which would build a real form with it. I found a way to do it but I'm pretty sure it's not very clean : addedFields = new Array(); $("#add-info .field").each(function() { addedFields.push(new Array($(this).find('.name').val(), $(this).find('.type').val(), $(this).find('.size').val())); }); Basically, the ".field" class objects are <tr> and the ".name", ".type" and ".size" objects are inputs. So I get an array of [name, type, size], then I convert it into a string using addedFields = addedFields.join(";"); Finally, I go to the PHP form that way ; document.location.href = "create.php?addedfields=" + addedFields; Concerning the PHP code, I create a PHP array using the explode() function: $addedFields = explode(";", $_GET['addedfields']); and then I use it again for each element in the array: foreach ($addedFields as $field) { $field = explode(",", $field); echo "<li>Field with name : '$field[0]', of '$field[1]' type and with a size of $field[2]"; }

  • Help with 'simple' jQuery question

    - by user318573
    I am trying to get a simple effect working in jQuery, and only have a few hours of experience with it, so have a lot to learn. I managed to get this code working: <script type="text/javascript" > $(document).ready(function() { lastBlock = $("#a1"); maxWidth = 415; minWidth = 75; $("ul li a").hover(function() { $(lastBlock).animate({ width: minWidth + "px" }, { queue: false, duration: 600 }); $(this).animate({ width: maxWidth + "px" }, { queue: false, duration: 600 }); lastBlock = this; }); }); </script> Which gives me exactly what I want, a 6 pane horizontal accordion effect. Each pane however has a 75x75 image on the upper left, which is always visible no matter which pane is active (and it is this image that when hovered over caused the pane to open) - what I want to do is for the image on the selected 'pane', I want to drop the top margin down 10px, and then put it back to 0px when a new one is selected, i.e. so the selected panes image is always 10px lower than the other 5 images. I suspect this should be easy, but not quite grasping the syntax yet. Thanks.

Here is what the code looks like <form method="post" action="<?php echo ProjectTheme_post_new_with_pid_stuff_thg($pid, '1');?>"> <?php do_action('ProjectTheme_step1_before_title'); ?> <!--////////// Project Title /////////////--> <li> <h2><?php echo __('Your Project Title', 'ProjectTheme'); ?>: <img src="../../images/help-icon.png" width="16" height="16" id="showhelp1"/></h2> <div id="help1">Your Project Title should be informative and brief.</div> <p><input type="text" style="width:90%;" class="do_input" name="project_title" value="Enter an informative & brief title..." onfocus="this.value = this.value=='Enter an informative & brief title...'?'':this.value;" onblur="this.value = this.value==''?'Enter an informative & brief title...':this.value;" /></p> <input type="submit" class="post-button" name="project_submit1" value="<?php _e("Next Step", 'ProjectTheme'); ?> &raquo;" /> </form> I am using a step by step form for users to fill in and I wanted to do a preview page, however I tried to use: if(isset($_POST['project_submit1'])){ $Name = $_POST['project_title']; echo "$Name"; } It shows up nothing.

  • Dropdown menu not showing when using position: absolute;

    - by Xiy
    I've just turned my website into a responsive layout and along the way I've somehow managed to make my dropdown menus not work. When hovering over 'Drop-downs' they don't display unless I'm using position: relative. They worked before using position: absolute - but it seems they only work with position relative now. When using relative it uses the width which messes up the navigation bar. Using relative: http://d.pr/i/tp5R Using absolute: http://d.pr/i/j7r1 CSS for my sub-menu div.left_first_header ul.sub-menu { width: 125px; top: 14px; z-index: 2; height: 100%; position: absolute; -webkit-border-radius: 0px 0px 4px 4px; -moz-border-radius: 0px 0px 4px 4px; background: url(images/drop_down_bg.jpg); padding-left: 15px; padding-right: 15px; background-repeat: repeat; } jQuery for the drop down functionality jQuery(document).ready(function ($) { jQuery("ul.dropdown li").hover(function() { $('ul:first',this).css('visibility', 'visible'); }, function() { jQuery(this).removeClass("hover"); jQuery('ul:first',this).css('visibility', 'hidden'); }); }); My website http://wpvault.com/kahlam/ Considering it's 4am I've probably made a really stupid simple mistake. I apologise if I've missed anything.

  • SQLAuthority Book Review – DBA Survivor: Become a Rock Star DBA

    - by pinaldave
    DBA Survivor: Become a Rock Star DBA – Thomas LaRock Link to Amazon Link to Flipkart First of all, I thank all my readers when I wrote that I could not get this book in any local book stores, because they offered me to send a copy of this good book. A very special mention goes to Sripada and Jayesh for they gave so much effort in finding my home address and sending me the hard copy. Before, I did not have the copy of the book, but now I have two of it already! It surprises me how my readers were able to find my home address, which I have not publicly shared. Quick Review: This is indeed a one easy-to-read and fun book. We all work day and night with technology yet we should not forget to show our love and care for our family at home. For our souls that starve for peace and guidance, this one book is the “it” book for all the technology enthusiasts. Though this book was specifically written for DBAs, the reach is not limited to DBAs only because the lessons incorporated in it actually applies to all. This is one of the most motivating technical books I have read. Detailed Review: Let us go over a few questions first: Who wants to be as famous as rockstars in the field of Database Administration? How can one learn what it takes to become a top notch software developer? If you are a beginner in your field, how will you go to next level? Your boss may be very kind or like Dilbert’s Boss, what will you do? How do you keep growing when Eco-system around you does not support you? You are almost at top but there is someone else at the TOP, what do you do and how do you avoid office politics? As a database developer what should be your basic responsibility? and many more… I was able to completely read book in one sitting and I loved it. Before I continue with my opinion, I want to echo the opinion of Kevin Kline who has written the Forward of the book. He has truly suggested that “You hold in your hands a collection of insights and wisdom on the topic of database administration gained through many years of hard-won experience, long nights of study, and direct mentorship under some of the industry’s most talented database professionals and information technology (IT) experts.” Today, IT field is getting bigger and better, while talking about terabytes of the database becomes “more” normal every single day. The gods and demigods of database professionals are taking care of these large scale databases and are carefully maintaining them. In this world, there are only a few beginnings on the first step. There are many experts in different technology fields who are asked to address the issues with databases. There is YOU and ME, who is just new to this work. So we ask ourselves WHERE to begin and HOW to begin. We adore and follow the religion of our rockstars, but oftentimes we really have no idea about their background and their struggles. Every rockstar has his success story which needs to be digested before learning his tricks and tips. This book starts with the same note and teaches the two most important lessons for anybody who wants to be a DBA Rockstar –  to focus on their single goal of learning and to excel the technology. The story starts with three simple guidelines – Get Prepared, Get Trained, Get Certified. Once a person learns the skills, and then, it would be about time that he needs to enrich or to improve those skills you have learned. I am sure that the right opportunity will come finding themselves and they will not have to go run behind it. However, the real challenge for any person is the first day or first week. A new employee, no matter how much experienced he is, sometimes has no clue about what should one do at new job. Chapter 2 and chapter 3 precisely talk about what one should do as soon as the new job begins. It is also written with keeping the fact in focus that each job can be very much different but there are few infrastructure setups and programming concepts are the same. Learning basics of database was really interesting. I like to focus on the roots of any technology. It is important to understand the structure of the database before suggesting what indexes needs to be created, the same way this book covers the most essential knowledge one must learn by most database developers. I think the title of the fourth chapter is my favorite sentence in this book. I can see that I will be saying this again and again in the future – “A Development Server Is a Production Server to a Developer“. I have worked in the software industry for almost 8 years now and I have seen so many developers sitting on their chairs and waiting for instructions from their lead about how to improve the code or what to do the next. When I talk to them, I suggest that the experiment with their server and try various techniques. I think they all should understand that for them, a development server is their production server and needs to pay proper attention to the code from the beginning. There should be NO any inappropriate code from the beginning. One has to fully focus and give their best, if they are not sure they should ask but should do something and stay active. Chapter 5 and 6 talks about two essential skills for any developer and database administration – what are the ethics of developers when they are working with production server and how to support software which is running on the production server. I have met many people who know the theory by heart but when put in front of keyboard they do not know where to start. The first thing they do opening the browser and searching online, instead of opening SQL Server Management Studio. This can very well happen to anybody who is experienced as well. Chapter 5 and 6 addresses that situation as well includes the handy scripts which can solve almost all the basic trouble shooting issues. “Where’s the Buffet?” By far, this is the best chapter in this book. If you have ever met me, you would know that I love food. I think after reading this chapter, I felt Thomas has written this just keeping me in mind. I think there will be many other people who feel the same way, too. Even my wife who read this chapter thought this was specifically written for me. I will not talk any more about this chapter as this is one must read chapter. And of course this is about real ‘FOOD‘. I am an SQL Server Trainer and Consultant and I totally agree with the point made in the chapter 8 of this book. Yes, it says here that what is necessary to train employees and people. Millions of dollars worth the labor is continuously done in the world which has faults and incorrect. Once something goes wrong, very expensive consultant comes in and fixes the problem. This whole cycle which can be stopped and improved if proper training is done. There is plenty of free trainings available as well, if one cannot afford paid training. “Connect. Learn. Share” – I think this is a great summary and bird’s eye view of this book. Networking is the key. Everything which is discussed in this book can be taken to next level if one properly uses this tips and continuously grow with it. Connecting with others, helping learn each other and building the good knowledge sharing environment should be the goal of everyone. Before I end the review I want to share a real experience. I have personally met one DBA who has worked in a single department in a company for so long that when he was put in a different department in his company due to closing that department, he could not adjust and quit the job despite the same people and company around him. Adjusting in the new environment gets much tougher as one person gets more and more experienced. This book precisely addresses the same issue along with their solutions. I just cannot stop comparing the book with my personal journey. I found so many things which are coincidently in the book is written as how we developer and DBA think. I must express special thanks to Thomas for taking time in his personal life and write this book for us. This book is indeed a book for everybody who wants to grow healthy in the tough and competitive environment. • SQL SERVER – Weekly Series – Memory Lane – #033

    - by Pinal Dave
    Here is the list of selected articles of SQLAuthority.com across all these years. Instead of just listing all the articles I have selected a few of my most favorite articles and have listed them here with additional notes below it. Let me know which one of the following is your favorite article from memory lane. 2007 Spatial Database Definition and Research Documents Here is the definition from Wikipedia about spatial database : A spatial database is a database that is optimized to store and query data related to objects in space, including points, lines and polygons. While typical databases can understand various numeric and character types of data, additional functionality needs to be added for databases to process spatial data types. Select Only Date Part From DateTime – Best Practice A very common question which I receive is how to only get Date or Time part from datetime value. In this blog post I explain the same in very simple words. T-SQL Paging Query Technique Comparison (OVER and ROW_NUMBER()) – CTE vs. Derived Table I have received few emails and comments about my post SQL SERVER – T-SQL Paging Query Technique Comparison – SQL 2000 vs SQL 2005. The main question was is this can be done using CTE? Absolutely! What about Performance? It is identical! Please refer above mentioned article for the history of paging. SQL SERVER – Cannot resolve collation conflict for equal to operation One of the very first error I ever encountered in my career was to resolve this conflict. I have blogged about it and I have realized that many others like me who are facing this error. LEN and DATALENGTH of NULL Simple Example Here is the question for you what is the LEN of NULL value? Well it is very easy – just read the blog. Recovery Models and Selection Very simple and easy explanation of the Database Backup Recovery Model and how to select the best option for you. Explanation SQL SERVER Hash Join Hash join gives best performance when two more join tables are joined and at-least one of them have no index or is not sorted. It is also expected that smaller of the either of table can be read in memory completely (though not necessary). Easy Sequence of SELECT FROM JOIN WHERE GROUP BY HAVING ORDER BY SELECT yourcolumns FROM tablenames JOIN tablenames WHERE condition GROUP BY yourcolumns HAVING aggregatecolumn condition ORDER BY yourcolumns NorthWind Database or AdventureWorks Database – Samples Databases In this blog post we learn how to install Northwind database. I also shared the source where one can download this database as that is used in many examples on MSDN help files. sp_HelpText for sp_HelpText – Puzzle A simple quick puzzle – do you know the answer of it? If not, go ahead and read the blog. 2008 SQL SERVER – 2008 – Step By Step Installation Guide With Images When SQL Server 2008 was newly introduced lots of people had no clue how to install SQL Server 2008 and the amount of the question which I used to receive were so much. I wrote this blog post with the spirit that this will help all the newbies to install SQL Server 2008 with the help of images. Still today this blog post has been bible for all of the people who are confused with SQL Server installation. Inline Variable Assignment I loved this feature. I have always wanted this feature to be present in SQL Server. The last time when I met developers from Microsoft SQL Server, I had talked about this feature. I think this feature saves some time but make the code more readable. Introduction to Policy Management – Enforcing Rules on SQL Server If our company policy is to create all the Stored Procedure with prefix ‘usp’ that developers should be just prevented to create Stored Procedure with any other prefix. Let us see a small tutorial how to create conditions and policy which will prevent any future SP to be created with any other prefix. 2009 Performance Counters from System Views – By Kevin Mckenna Many of you are not aware of this fact that access to performance information is readily available in SQL Server and that too without querying performance counters using a custom application or via perfmon. Till now, this fact has remained undisclosed but through this post I would like to explain you can easily access SQL Server performance counter information. Without putting much effort you will come across the system viewsys.dm_os_performance_counters. As the name suggests, this provides you easy access to the SQL Server performance counter information that is passed on to perfmon, but you can get at it via tsql. Customize Toolbar – Remove Debug Button from Toolbar I was fond of SQL Server Debugger feature in SQL Server 2000. To my utter disappointment, this feature was withdrawn from SQL Server 2005. The button of the debugger is similar to a play button and is used to run debugging commands of Visual Studio. Because of this reason, it gets very much infuriating for developers when they are developing on both – Visual Studio and SSMS. Let us now see how we can remove debugging button from SQL Server Management Studio. Effect of Normalization on Index and Performance A very interesting conversation which started from twitter. If you want to read one link this is the link I encourage you to read it. SSMS Feature – Multi-server Queries Using SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) DBAs can now query multiple servers from one window. It is quite common for DBAs with large amount of servers to maintain and gather information from multiple SQL Servers and create report. This feature is a blessing for the DBAs, as they can now assemble all the information instantaneously without going anywhere. Query Optimizer Hint ROBUST PLAN – Question to You “ROBUST PLAN” is a kind of query hint which works quite differently than other hints. It does not improve join or force any indexes to use; it just makes sure that a query does not crash due to over the limit size of row. Let me elaborate upon it in the blog post. 2010 Do you really know the difference between various date functions available in SQL Server 2012? Here is a three part story where we explored the same with examples: Fastest Way to Restore the Database Difference Between DATETIME and DATETIME2 Difference Between DATETIME and DATETIME2 – WITH GETDATE Shrinking NDF and MDF Files – Readers’ Opinion Shrinking Database always creates performance degradation and increases fragmentation in the database. I suggest that you keep that in mind before you start reading the following comment. If you are going to say Shrinking Database is bad and evil, here I am saying it first and loud. Now, the comment of Imran is written while keeping in mind only the process showing how the Shrinking Database Operation works. Imran has already explained his understanding and requests further explanation. I have removed the Best Practices section from Imran’s comments, as there are a few corrections. 2011 Solution – Puzzle – SELECT * vs SELECT COUNT(*) This is very interesting question and I am very confident that not every one knows the answer to this question. Let me ask you again – Which will be faster SELECT* or SELECT COUNT (*) or do you think this is apples and oranges comparison. 2012 Service Broker and CAP_CPU_PERCENT – Limiting SQL Server Instances to CPU Usage In SQL Server 2012 there are a few enhancements with regards to SQL Server Resource Governor. One of the enhancement is how the resources are allocated. Let me explain you with examples. Let us understand the entire discussion with the help of three different examples. Finding Size of a Columnstore Index Using DMVs One of the very common question I often see is need of the list of columnstore index along with their size and corresponding table name. I quickly re-wrote a script using DMVs sys.indexes and sys.dm_db_partition_stats. This script gives the size of the columnstore index on disk only. I am sure there will be advanced script to retrieve details related to components associated with the columnstore index. However, I believe following script is sufficient to start getting an idea of columnstore index size. Developer Training Resources and Summary Roundup Developer Training - Importance and Significance - Part 1 In this part we discussed the importance of training in the real world. The most important and valuable resource any company is its employee. Employees who have been well-trained will be better at their jobs and produce a better product.  An employee who is well trained obviously knows more about their job and all the technical aspects. I have a very high opinion about training employees and it is the most important task. Developer Training – Employee Morals and Ethics – Part 2 In this part we discussed the most crucial components of training. Often employees are expecting the company to pay for their training and the company expresses no interest in training the employee. Quite often training expenses are the real issue for both the employee and employer. Developer Training – Difficult Questions and Alternative Perspective - Part 3 This part was the most difficult to write as I tried to address a few difficult questions and answers. Training is such a sensitive issue that many developers when not receiving chance for training think about leaving the organization. Developer Training – Various Options for Developer Training – Part 4 In this part I tried to explore a few methods and options for training. The generic feedback I received on this blog post was short and I should have explored each of the subject of the training in details. I believe there are two big buckets of training 1) Instructor Lead Training and 2) Self Lead Training. Developer Training – A Conclusive Summary- Part 5 There is no better motivation than a personal desire to learn new technology. Honestly there is nothing more personal learning. That “change is the only constant” and “adapt & overcome” are the essential lessons of life. One cannot stop the learning and resist the change. In the IT industry “ego of knowing all” and the “resistance to change” are the most challenging issues. A Quick Look at Logging and Ideas around Logging Question: What is the first thing comes to your mind when you hear the word “Logging”? Strange enough I got a different answer every single time. Let me just list what answer I got from my friends. Let us go over them one by one. Beginning Performance Tuning with SQL Server Execution Plan Solution of Puzzle – Swap Value of Column Without Case Statement Earlier this week I asked a question where I asked how to Swap Values of the column without using CASE Statement. Read here: SQL SERVER – A Puzzle – Swap Value of Column Without Case Statement. I have proposed 3 different solutions in the blog posts itself. I had requested the help of the community to come up with alternate solutions and honestly I am stunned and amazed by the qualified entries.
