• Is it possible to use Python with the Ubuntu SDK?

  David Planella wrote in his answer to a question I posted that: ...the recommended way to develop apps for Ubuntu is the Ubuntu SDK. So I installed it, but looks like the supported programming language is C++. Does it mean I will need to know C++ to develop a new application for Ubuntu? Is C++ the recommended programming language for Ubuntu application now? What about Python, I started learning it hoping to develop applications for Ubuntu.

• What common term could be used for Web Services, Windows Services etc

  My question is primarily concerned with making a CV. Normally under the Language section we list the individual programming Languages we've used. For example, C#, C++, PHP. Under the Platform section we can list the various operating systems and devices. Under which category would Web Services/Windows Services fall? My point is these are not platforms by themselves and surely they aren't a language. Is there any common term that can be used to describe these?

• Could someone break this nasty habit of mine please?

  I recently graduated in cs and was mostly unsatisfied since I realized that I received only a basic theoretical approach in a wide range of subjects (which is what college is supposed to do but still...) . Anyway I took the habit of spending a lot of time looking for implementations of concepts and upon finding those I will used them as guides to writing my own implementation of those concepts just for fun. But now I feel like the only way I can fully understand a new concept is by trying to implement from scratch no matter how unoptimized the result may be. Anyway this behavior lead me to choose by default the hard way, that is time consuming instead of using a nicely written library until I hit my head again a huge wall and then try to find a library that works for my purpose.... Does anyone else do that and why? It seems so weird why would anyone (including me) do that ? Is it a bad practice ? and if so how can i stop doing that ?

  I have a web application that serves as a dictionary, and it ranks good at google when searching for a rare word in my language (the dictionary's target language). I want the result to appear in the define: some-word, as well as in the search results when someone uses the filter tool Dictionary. Should I add some special meta-tag in the head of the html? • Is it possible to make/translate a 3d engine to ruby on rails?

  I am looking to make a 3D FPS that runs inside web browsers. I looked into using WebGL, but it didn't seem far enough along into development. I decided on using RoR because Ruby was a language I knew. I realize this may seem like a ridiculous question, but is there any way I can port/rewrite/whatever a game engine(Say for instance IrrLicht) to run inside Rails? Or for that matter, any other language on the web.

• Google analytics and 301 redirects

  We have a multi language website and the first page redirects to specific language page using 301 redirect based on some logic. For exmaple: http://mysite.com/ redirects to http://mysite.com/en/ The problem is that these redirects destroy the primary request so we do not get correct results for traffic sources in GA. • Can we compare programming languages ergonomically?

  For instance, would Python be a more ergonomic programming language since it doesn't force you to make curly braces which requires the AltGr key. Also Python usually requires less code to achieve the same or am I being biased towards Python and PHP actually is an ergonomical and comfortable language despite forcing the programmer to use the AltGr key? Isn't forcing the programmer to use the AltGr key not very ergonomical?

  Back in the 80s colleges were teaching Pascal because it is easy to learn, while myself and many others like me were learning BASIC because it was not only easy to learn but accessible and also fashionable (for an extremely liberal definition of fashion) It has just occurred to me that empirical data on the actual programming languages kids are choosing to use should be a good indicator of which language would be the ideal first choice for educators.   My understanding of a primitive datatype is that It is a datatype provided by a language implicitly (Others are user defined classes) So different languages have different sets of datatypes which are considered primitive for that particular language. Is that right? And what is the difference between a "basic datatype" and "built-in datatype". Wikipedia says a primitive datatype is either of the two. PS - Why is "string" type considered as a primitive type in SNOBOL4 and not in Java ?

  Having finished Pro DLR in .Net 4, I have concluded that this is a book that needs to be read through several times and the examples worked through.  Since the Dynamic Language Runtime is as much a radical change as the the original Common Language Runtime, this is hardly surprising. Ultimatly the DLR will enable more niche programming languages, hence I recommend this book to Dot Net teams for when they have a requirement that justifies the effort.

  I am a JavaScript developer/architect who, like many developers these days, did not come from a Computer Science background (I studied Philosophy at a liberal arts college), but instead learned development by actually building applications, and by reading books explaining language grammars, design patterns, and best practices. I have never felt that my ignorance of CS concepts has hurt my ability to build great apps or find employment. Recently, however, I have felt the itch to grow in this direction. Do you have any suggestions for some good introductory CS resources/books? I know that Computer Science is a huge field and my question is very general, but I am looking for a 101-type survey of the high-level concepts, from which I can branch off into more specific areas of study. But when I think of web frameworks(I do mostly PHP) - like Cake, CI, Symfony, Laravel, Zend, Drupal, Joomla, Wordpress, Rails, Django, etc - I'm like god no. Why aren't there web frameworks that provide me with simple, fun and powerful constructs like a programming language?

  How to interact with colleague who will happily talk about a thing, but from the way he talk about it, it becomes clear, that he does not fully understand some underlying concepts - but at the same time is not that kind of personality, that would ask for clarification or explanation (maybe because it is sign of weakness). There is difficulty involved in such a situation, since such people will demand to be consulted in a decision process, but instead of brainstorming solutions one will need to neutralize the diffusion of the concepts first, and when this is done time is already up and solution cannot be brainstormed any more. Maybe FUD is not the correct acronym, maybe DIS, Diffusion, Indifference, Surety.

• How do you deal with the details when reading code?

  After reading some projects, I find that it is not the architecture of the software that is really hard to know. It is not hard to figure out the architecture immediately if the project is clearly designed and implemented, if it's hard and never seen before, some day later I can find out some pattern similar to the one I read in the same domain. The difficulty is that the concepts and mechanism defined by the author are really hard to guess, and these concepts may spread in the whole project which makes it hard to grasp. The situation is normal and universal and you can ask questions to your colleague when in a company. However, it gets worse if nobody around you knows these details. How do you handle these details which block your reading?
