  Hello. I'm actually trying to write a shell script that logs the output of a command to a file but, since the command takes a long time to complete (about 15 minutes), I would like to start parsing the output of the command (content of the file) before the command is completed, so I can send messages to the standard output (the user), like: 10% complete 45% complete and so on. Program steps Redirect command to a file: $(command) $FILE Start reading and parsing the output ($FILE) before the command is finished. I thought of using pararell programming, but I havent't got the hang of it. Any help you be appreciated. Best regards.

• Configure GNU screen so that it stores command histories in files

  I would like to configure GNU screen such that it stores the command histories of all the different windows in different files. I know by default GNU screen does not store the command histories (of its different windows) in a file at all (it stores them in memory instead), but it might be possible to tell it to store them in files instead? The different command history files should have the names <session>.<window>.history, or similar. Does anyone have an idea how to do that? (Just to be clear, I want each GNU screen window to write a different file. I like that each window has a different history, and I typically run different types of commands in the different windows.)

• Building package from binary files - what's wrong with my control file

  I'm busy trying to build a .deb package from the binaries of my application (non open source) and I'm having trouble getting the correct info to display in the Ubuntu Software Centre (when you click on the .deb file). Please see screenshot below of control file and Software Centre View. It seems like the package name and the package description is swapped. I'm expecting the part in bold to read "attix5pro" and not "Cloud backup agent". Can someone show my my mistake or guide me?

• Files being rolled back on server 2008 R2

  I've got a weird situation occurring on my dev server. Randomly, and for no reason that I can see, files are being rolled back to an earlier version! This has happened twice now - the first time I assumed I'd done something wrong somewhere, restored the file I was after from a backup and gave it no further thought. The second time, just now, it happened to a folder containing just a few files that I was working on - suddenly all the changes I'd made over the last day or two were gone! (I know, commit more often, ay?). Thankfully I have a daily backup and so have recovered my files, but I'm very concerned about this and need to understand how and why it's happened. The only change made between file states is that I enabled sharing on a completely unrelated folder. I'm developing an app on Railo, which is running on Tomcat. The code was all fine and in c:\websites\appname. I shared the 'Railo' folder, which is c:\railo in order to allow my IDE access to the logs generated by the app (contained in c:\railo\tomcat\logs) and when I reloaded the app, the code was reverted to a few days ago! I'm at a complete loss here. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks.

• Copy large files to multiple machines on a LAN

  I have a few large files that I need to copy from one Linux machine to about 20 other Linux machines, all on the same LAN as quickly as is feasible. What tools/methods would be best for copying these files, noting that this is not going to be a one-time copy. These machines will never be connected to the Internet, and security is not an issue. Update: The reason for my asking this is because (as I understand it) we are currently using scp in serial to copy the files to each of the machines and I have been informed that this is "too slow" and a faster alternative is being sought. According to what I have been told, attempting to parallelize the scp calls simply slows it down further due to hard drive seeks.

  I'm setting up a link tracking system, which (temporarily) involves adding /link/id/ in front of URL (like http://server/data/id/publication/id/). rewrite data/id/(.*) http://server/$1; The request is logged as: ip - - [17/Nov/2011:10:07:19 +0300] "GET /data/id/publication/id.html HTTP/1.1" 302 154 "-" "UA"` For some reason (keeping the compatibility with AWStats) it is wanted to have 200 logged instead of 302. (nginx allows to get 301 code out of box with permanent option, but thats inappropriate too) What are my options here? Will the combination of location { } and rewrite do the job?

  I am not sure if anyone has done it. I am trying to do something that is in general, uncommon i.e. unit-testing executable (Windows) or ELFs (Linux). I know that CppUnit provides a good unit testing facility, but I have never used it for unit-testing (used UnitTest++). I hear rumours that you can unit-test executables too.   I am writing an webscrapper, to do the download content from a website. Traversing to the website/URL, triggers the creation of a temporary URL. This new URL has a zipped text file. This zipped file is to be downloaded and parsed. I have written a scrapper in C# using WebClient and its function - DownloadFileAsync(). The zipped file is read from the designated location on a trapped DownloadFileCompleted event. My issue : The Windows 'Open/Save dialog is triggered". This requires user input and the automation is disrupted. Can you suggest a way to bypass the issue ? I am cool with rewriting the code using any alternate libraries. :) Thanks for reading,

• Unable to log into samba server

  I am unable to log into a samba server (running on fedora core 6) as it prompts for a username and password when I try to connect to the mapped drives from my windows 7 machine. I decided to reset the password using the command smbpassword paddy and when I list users using check the pdbedit -L -v I see that the password was updated at the time I made this change. However, I am still unable to log in. The log file in /var/log/samba/log.paddy shows: [2012/10/11 09:55:54.605923, 1] smbd/service.c:678(make_connection_snum) create_connection_server_info failed: NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED [2012/10/11 09:55:54.606635, 1] smbd/service.c:678(make_connection_snum) create_connection_server_info failed: NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED How can I resolve this so that I can log in?

• How do I rescue files from the encrypted home folder via live USB stick?

  I know, this has been asked and answered all over the internet already. However, I start feeling stupid, since the informations there are not helping me. Just this morning, I wanted to install the newest update to 13.10. After the download, when it came to the actual installing, the install program froze and didn't do anything for hours. At that time, I was still logged in. The computer was working and everything was accessable to me. However, I made the mistake and didn't immediately make safety copies of everything. Instead, I just rebooted. Long story short: My computer even fails to reset to a previous version via Grub. But I am able to boot from a USB stick and, after starting Nautilus, I see my home folder on the HD. I would now like to copy its contents onto an external harddisk. Problem 1: I have no rights to access the folder like that. Problem 2: It is encrypted. Problem 3: I don't know how to give myself the rights to access the folder nor do I know how to encrypt it. I assume that it might help that I still know these things: - my old login name - my old login phrase - a 32 characters long string of hexadecimal numbers that I copied to my list of passwords as "Ubuntu Encryption Code". I copied it digitally right after installing Ubuntu the first time and encrypting the home folder, so there won't be any typos. I am sure of that. The solutions that I saw so far, tell me that I need the "encryption phrase". But when I follow the instructions and use this phrase that I have in my list, I only get messages of denial. Can anyone help me through this special problem, please?

• What permissions do I need to move a folder?

  In the root of my drive there exists a folder called SourceControl that contains all the working copies of all my programming projects. I would like to move the folder to my user directory (\Users\Me), but something about the permissions on the folder forbids me. I don't remember how I created the folder. When I execute the move command: MOVE \SourceControl \Users\Me I receive the following error: Access is denied. I have resolved a similar problem in the past using the Takeown utility to assign ownership of the file to me, so I tried this command next: TAKEOWN /F \SourceControl It returns the following error: ERROR: The current logged on user does not have ownership privileges on the file (or folder) "C:\SourceControl". I've just learned about the Icacls utility, which can inspect and modify file permissions. I used this command to inspect the permissions on the folder: ICACLS \SourceControl It produced this list: \SourceControl BUILTIN\Administrators:(I)(F) BUILTIN\Administrators:(I)(OI)(CI)(IO)(F) NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM:(I)(F) NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM:(I)(OI)(CI)(IO)(F) BUILTIN\Users:(I)(OI)(CI)(RX) NT AUTHORITY\Authenticated Users:(I)(M) NT AUTHORITY\Authenticated Users:(I)(OI)(CI)(IO)(M) I think this means that normal user accounts, like mine, have permission only to read and execute (RX) here, while administrator accounts have full control (F). I used Icacls to confer full control of the directory to my user account with this command: ICACLS \SourceControl /grant:r Me:F The command produces this output: processed file: \SourceControl Successfully processed 1 files; Failed processing 0 files Now inspection of the permissions produces this output: \SourceControl Domain\Me:(F) BUILTIN\Administrators:(I)(F) BUILTIN\Administrators:(I)(OI)(CI)(IO)(F) NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM:(I)(F) NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM:(I)(OI)(CI)(IO)(F) BUILTIN\Users:(I)(OI)(CI)(RX) NT AUTHORITY\Authenticated Users:(I)(M) NT AUTHORITY\Authenticated Users:(I)(OI)(CI)(IO)(M) But after this the move command still fails with the same error. I already have rented a machine running centOS 6 but I have run into a bit of a technical problem with configuring the server software: The server will have some files that it will try to read/write to them but what I need is a way to have a blueprint of these files and everytime the server restarts the files that it used get deleted and replaced by the blueprints. I have heared of a RAM disks or Virtual File Systems but didnt quite understand how they work or how to set them up. The server software is written in java which means bash commands can be run from it. • Windows Boot disc to save files?

  Somehow after updating my legit windows 7 OS with no pirated or mod software on my PC i was welcome to a black screen. I popped in my ghost disc and copied the files i need to an external HD. IIRC windows 7 disc can do that too. Problem with the way i did it on ghost was it excepted me to select 1 file (an HD disc image) so i couldnt select multiple folders to move. Also when i did move i had no idea if it finished or how long it would take. My linux live cd couldnt access the HD. Anyways, is there a disc i can use to easily copy files from my laptop to my external HD? I think ghost, windows 7 and windows server all allow me but is there one that is better suited to copy files?

To explain it a bit more in details: There is a company that has multiple computers (think in 100/1000's) and they all are missing the same system32 files since the company's software removed it. The systems are distributed all over the world and are managed by "normal" people who don't have any knowledge about computers.   I'm migrating a web system that now works on windows server 2003 IIS 6, to IIS 7.5 on windows 2008 server This system generates javascript files with accented characters in ANSI (Portuguese - Brazil). These javascripts shows for example alert messages. In IIS 6 I have no problem with that, but now using IIS 7.5 if those files are not in UTF-8, the accented characters do not appear correctly. Do we have any way to force these files, even in ANSI, to be processed by IIS 7.5 as UTF-8 ? Thank you ! Cheers Xcarpa

  I mounted my nas in ubuntu 12.10 and it works with read/write, but when I'm adding a file or directory that file gets read only permissions. My fstab mount looks like this: //192.168.0.12/share/ /media/nas cifs credentials=/home/jocke/.smbcredentials,iocharset=utf8,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777 0 0 If I mount the smb share manualy through the GUI it works, but not through fstab. What I am doing wrong?

• logfile deleted on Oracle database how to re-create it?

  for my database assignment we were looking into 'database corruption' and I was asked to delete the second redo log file which I have done with the command: rm log02a.rdo this was in the $HOME/ORADATA/u03 directory. Now I started up my database using startup pfile=$PFILE nomount then I mounted it using the command alter database mount; now when I try to open it alter database open; it gives me the error: ORA-03113: end-of-file on communication channel Process ID: 22125 Session ID: 25 Serial number: 1 I am assuming this is because the second redo log file is missing. There is still log01a.rdo, but not the one I have deleted. How can I go about recovering this now so that I can open my database again? I have looked into the database created scripts, and it specified the log02a.rdo file to be size 10M and part of group 2. If I do select group#, member from v$logfile; I get: 1 /oradata/student_db/user06/ORADATA/u03/log01a.rdo 2 /oradata/student_db/user06/ORADATA/u03/log02a.rdo 3 /oradata/student_db/user06/ORADATA/u03/log03a.rdo 4 /oradata/student_db/user06/ORADATA/u03/log04a.rdo So it is part of group 2. If I try to add the log02a.rdo file again "already part of the database". If I drop group 2 and then add it again with these commands: ALTER DATABASE ADD LOGFILE GROUP 2 ('$HOME/ORADATA/u03/log02a.rdo') SIZE 10M; Nothing. Supposedly alters the database, but it still won't start up. Any ideas what I can do to re-create this and be able to open my database again?

• viewing fbx files in windows via xna 4.0

  I've made some models in Blender and exported them in Autodesk fbx format. I'm trying to view them using XNA 4.0 Refresh. Loading them isn't much an issue, but I'm not familiar enough with XNA 4.0 to, well basically I want to load in the model at say the origin (0,0,0) world coordinates, and then rotate and/or zoom the camera about the world coordinates origin as well so that I can test the model. Typically the mouse, and maybe some arrow keys for zooming/rotating the camera. Anyways, this seems like a simple task and I shouldn't have to re-invent this, isn't there a skeleton code somewhere for this kind of thing for XNA 4.0? I couldn't find a solid example for this on the web. I found a couple that seemed like they might work for xbox, but I'm trying to do this on windows only. Anyways, just looking to be pointed in the right direction on this one, thanks.
