    I am extremely honored to announce that I have been nominated to receive the Microsoft MVP Award for my contributions in C#! Hold on; I have not won the award yet. But to be nominated is really humbling. Thank you very much! For those of you who may not know, here is a high-level summary of the MVP award: The Microsoft Most Valuable Professional (MVP) Program recognizes and thanks outstanding members of technical communities for their community participation and willingness to help others. The program celebrates the most active community members from around the world who provide invaluable online and offline expertise that enriches the community experience and makes a difference in technical communities featuring Microsoft products.   • Book Review (Book 11) - Applied Architecture Patterns on the Microsoft Platform

    This is a continuation of the books I challenged myself to read to help my career - one a month, for year. You can read my first book review here, and the entire list is here. The book I chose for April 2012 was: Applied Architecture Patterns on the Microsoft Platform. I was traveling at the end of last month so I’m a bit late posting this review here. Why I chose this book: I actually know a few of the authors on this book, so when they told me about it I wanted to check it out. The premise of the book is exactly as it states in the title - to learn how to solve a problem using products from Microsoft. What I learned: I liked the book - a lot. They've arranged the content in a "Solution Decision Framework", that presents a few elements to help you identify a need and then propose alternate solutions to solve them, and then the rationale for the choice. But the payoff is that the authors then walk through the solution they implement and what they ran into doing it. I really liked this approach. It's not a huge book, but one I've referred to again since I've read it. It's fairly comprehensive, and includes server-oriented products, not things like Microsoft Office or other client-side tools. In fact, I would LOVE to have a work like this for Open Source and other vendors as well - would make for a great library for a Systems Architect. This one is unashamedly aimed at the Microsoft products, and even if I didn't work here, I'd be fine with that. As I said, it would be interesting to see some books on other platforms like this, but I haven't run across something that presents other systems in quite this way. And that brings up an interesting point - This book is aimed at folks who create solutions within an organization. It's not aimed at Administrators, DBA's, Developers or the like, although I think all of those audiences could benefit from reading it. The solutions are made up, and not to a huge level of depth - nor should they be. It's a great exercise in thinking these kinds of things through in a structured way. The information is a bit dated, especially for Windows and SQL Azure. While the general concepts hold, the cloud platform from Microsoft is evolving so quickly that any printed book finds it hard to keep up with the improvements. I do have one quibble with the text - the chapters are a bit uneven. This is always a danger with multiple authors, but it shows up in a couple of chapters. I winced at one of the chapters that tried to take a more conversational, humorous style. This kind of academic work doesn't lend itself to that style. I recommend you get the book - and use it. I hope they keep it updated - I'll be a frequent customer. :)

  • Microsoft Virtual Academy

    Carpe Diem It's been since a while that I could write an article for this blog but alas, I was (and still am) very busy with customer's work. Which is actually good. So, what is this article going to tell you? Well, in general, just what I already tweeted, that life is constant process of learning - especially as software craftsman. Due to an upcoming new customer project in ASP.NET I had to seize the opportunity to get my head deeper into latest available technologies, like Windows Azure and SQL Azure. I know... cloud computing and so on is not a recent development and already available since quite a while but I never any means to get myself into this since roughly two weeks ago. Microsoft Virtual Academy I can't remember exactly what guided me towards the Microsoft Virtual Academy (MVA), oh wait... Yes, it was a posting on Facebook from an old CLIP community friend. He posted a shortened URL with #MVA tag that caught my attention. Thanks for that Thomas Kuberek. After the usual sign in or registration via Live ID I was a little bit surprised that Mauritius is not an available country option... Quick mail exchange with the MVA Decan, and yeah, apologies for the missing entry. So, currently I'm learning about Microsoft products and services, and collecting points under "Not Listed Country" until Mauritius is going to be added. Hopefully soon, as MVA honors your effort with different knowledge ranks that are compared to other students with public profiles. I think it's a nice move to add some game and competition factor into the learning game. The tracks and their different modules are mainly references to publicly available material online, namely on either MSDN, TechNet, Channel9, or other Microsoft based sites. The course material therefore also varies in different media and formats, ranging from simple online articles over downloadable documents (.docx or .pdf) to Silverlight / Windows Media streams with download options. Self-assessment and students ranking Each module in a track can be finished by taking part in a self-assessment. Up to now, the assessment I did (and passed) were limited to 10 minutes available time, and consisted of six to seven questions on the module training material. Nothing too serious but it gives you a glimpse idea how Microsoft certification exams are structured. Conclusion Nothing really new but nicely gathered, assembled and presented to the MVA students. At the moment, I wouldn't dare to compare the richness and quality of those courses with professional training offers, like Pluralsight .NET Training, LearnDevNow, VTC, etc. at all, but I think that MVA has potential. Give it a try, and let me know about your opinions.

  • Play the Microsoft Game “Are You Certifiable?”

    Want to know if you have what it takes to be certified by Microsoft? Today we check out an enjoyable way to practice and test your IT knowledge of Microsoft products.  There are two modes, one where you log in with your Live account so you can save your progress, and play additional levels.   If you log in with your Live account, it’s obvious that Microsoft wants to sell you some certification courses, so just be aware of that. Or Guest Play where you can only play one episode and scores are not saved.   Playing the Game We’ll take a look at the Guest Play just so you get a sense of what the game is about. Enter in a username and pick an avatar… Then read the instructions…we won’t go over them all here, there are a lot of options and points are scored by correct answers, amount of time it takes to answer them, you get vouchers to play a question before answers are shown…etc. Once you start playing, you get certification questions, you can take as much time to read the question as you want, then hit the Answer button when you’re ready. Now you have four answers to choose from…notice the time clicking down, so you want to try to answer as quickly as possible. After selecting the answer, you’re told if it is correct or not, then given an answer explaination, along with your score. You can flag the topic so it comes up again, which is a good way to get repetition of various topics, which really helps when taking the cert tests. If you get an answer wrong, you still get an answer explanation which is cool, so you can learn and better understand the topic. Conclusion This game is definitely not for everyone, only those who are curious or want a fun way to practice for Microsoft certifications. If you are interested in a cert from Microsoft, it’s a fun way to practice up. Play Are You Certifiable?   • Copy Office files from a Mac to a PC

    A friend of me recently dumped his Mac fpr a PC. He used Microsoft Office for Mac and has several hundred Files (Word, Excel) which were copied over to the new PC using a USB disk. Microsoft Office is now unable to read any of there files. I suspect this is because of little endian vs. big endian. Is there any tool which can converted all theses files automatically, doing this by hand would take ages.

  • Problem connecting to SSH in office network

    I have trouble connecting via SSH to a server whenever I am in the office. I get as far as being prompted for my password and then after that there's a long wait which always ends in a Write failed: Broken pipe This is only for connecting via SSH. I use svn to commit files to a repository hosted on the same server and there are no hitches. Furthermore, this only happens in our office. When I go the university or whenever I am at home or at the coffee shop I am able to connect seamlessly. There are no firewalls in our office. It's just a basic wireless router connected to a modem setup. It's the same setup I have at home and I guess the same setup in the coffee shop. What are the causes for a broken pipe and why does this phenomenon only happen when I try connect via SSH and not when I work with svn on the same server? I didn't do anything but that's because there is no one in the office but me! Having said that, is it possible that it has something to do with the number of sessions an SSH server can handle? UPDATE 2011-14-07: I try to login via SSH through Putty on another machine running windows together with my current SSH session in Ubuntu and now it seems my SSH session in Ubuntu has been dropped. I can't type into the terminal. Is Putty the culprit now?

  • Default Critique branch office setup: VPNTunnel->HQ, subnets for VOIP/PC, + several Q's

    We're setting up a new branch office. * ~10 users. * Each user has a VOIP phone provided by a hosted solution. * Users need access to resources on HQ (located in another state), so setting up VPN tunnel * HQ only supports certain Cisco/Juniper devices. VOIP provider only supports SonicWall, so current plan is to have two routers w/ separate subnets for VOIP vs. PC traffic. * PC's will plug into pass-thru Ethernet jacks on the VOIP phones, but the phones vs. PC's will point to different subnets. * Cable Modem is 50Mbps / 5Mbps DOCSIS 3.0 business line w/ 5 static IP's. * Each of the 2 subnets will map to one of the 5 public IP's. * May or may not also need to support a VPN tunnel with a second branch office because of a file server they have there that some in the new office use. I'm pushing to have them move the files to a server on the HQ's network so we don't have to worry about setting up an additional tunnel. Questions: Do you foresee any issues with the below set-up? Router recommendations by HQ IT staff: Cisco Router 2811, or Juniper SSG5 or SSG20. Any recommendations about these routers? We need Wi-Fi too – looks like the above routers have models that support this, any reason not to use this? Users need to be able to work from home. If so, how is authentication handled? Right now we use AD credentials for the HQ's domain, but we currently don't plan to have an AD system in the new location since it's only 10 users. We can't tie the authentication system from the new location's router to the AD system of the HQ. All the PC's that will be in the new location are currently in the existing office that is closing down, and are already joined to the domain of the HQ. Please confirm: this + the VPN tunnel will be sufficient for them to connect to authenticated resources on the HQ's network from the new location, correct? Mainly SQL servers and file servers, and a few remote desktop sessions. I'm sure I'll have some more questions, but can't think of them right now.

  • Removing Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Tools for Office Runtime (x64)

    I'm trying to remove the Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Tools for Office Runtime (x64). It says it's uninstalled when I try to remove it from Control Panel->Programs and Features, but the list item is still there, and if I try to remove it again, it brings up the prompt to install it. How do I get rid of this program completely (or at least remove it from the add/remove list)? I don't have Microsoft Office installed (or Visual Studio).

    An excel document with several pivot and lookup tables that previously worked under office xp and 2003 stopped working after an upgrade to office 2007 (linked stuff doesn't update). I originally assumed there's something disabled in 2007 that I need to turn back on, but after having opened it in excel 2007 it no longer works in previous versions either. Any idea what I'm missing/what excel 2007 did?

    Each server-side Web control in an ASP.NET Web Forms application has an <code>ID</code> property that identifies the Web control and is name by which the Web control is accessed in the code-behind class. When rendered into HTML, the Web control turns its server-side <code>ID</code> value into a client-side <code>id</code> attribute.   • Is it really free to deploy SharpDevelop apps?

    I'm trying SharpDevelop to develop c# applications. Regardless of the language and the IDE, is it free to deploy applications that use WinForms? I've been developing with MonoDevelop just because it has a designer for Gtk# (client doesn't want to pay more for licences as to use VS...), but it's too buggy and it's making us lose lots of time. SharpDevelop looks great at first sight, but I wouldn't like the user or us to have problems with legal software. Thank you for the data! Warm regards.

  • Roadshow Microsoft – Primeira Parada: Londrina, PR

    Hoje (23/03) tivemos aqui em Londrina a primeira parada do Roadshow Microsoft, com apresentação de diversos produtos com aplicação em cenários técnicos. Como já é de costume, o evento reuniu alguns dos melhores profissionais de DEV e INFRA, com informações extremamente úteis sobre .NET Framework 4, Entity Framework, Exchange, Sharepoint, entre outras tecnologias e produtos. Na minha visão, o evento conseguiu atender a expectativa dos participantes, através dos cenários técnicos criados para a ficticia Adventure Works (acho que eu conheço esta empresa… :). Através da participação ativa de todos, as tracks de DEV e INFRA tiveram o sucesso aparente no comentário do pessoal nos intervalos e almoço. Depois das palestras, lá por 19h, tivemos um jantar com o pessoal da Microsoft e influenciadores da região, onde, até as 21h, discutimos muita coisa (até Commerce Server!). Esta aproximação com o time de comunidades da Microsoft, além de alguns “penetras” como o próprio Alex disse, é extremamente importante e útil, visto que passamos conhecemos a fundo as intenções e futuras ações da Microsoft visando as comunidades locais. Para concluir, algo que sempre digo: participe de alguma comunidade técnica da sua região. Entre em contato com influenciadores, conheça os grupos de usuários perto de você e não perca tempo. Ter o conhecimento perto de você, contribuir e crescer profissionalmente não tem preço.
