• Text Editor with SSH/Terminal/FTP/Putty combo for develeping in Rails on Windows

  I plan to learn Ruby on Rails and would like to code in my development box which runs on Windows XP. I have Ubuntu Server (forgot the version ;p) running as my web server with Rails installed on it. I have been considering using Vim as my text editor of choice in XP but would like to know any text editor and accompanying shell/FTP/Putty/SSH (or whatever you may call it) program that can access those files in my Ubuntu server. It is better if the shell can be called or is bundled inside the text editor. I would like to know your combinations (text editor + shell) and your experiences on it when you were able to develop your Rails projects on that combination. Cheers!

• New to world of Ubuntu

  I've been running Ubuntu 13.04 since June 2013, and upgrading to 13.10 as we speak.(Note I own total 3 laptops.) My goal is to have one complete Linux machine and one dual boot, and third well (he is a newer Lenovo with Windows 8.1 and is touch screen.) but I want to learn Ubuntu life and further myself with using it for everyday use, but I'm not very fluid in Linux usage and hoping to find people who have a love for teaching others how to be one with the BEST OS IN THE WORLD!   Where can I get a list of recommended PDF viewer and form-filler components that I can buy and install in C#? I query on C# component PDF viewer on Google and get a lot of hits, but I'm not certain what programmers have tried and liked. Background: See, my employer is wanting me to build one in C# as a kind of training exercise, but also to be a product for sales lead generation for another product they sell. The employer is perfectly okay buying something, as long as it's good. I've learned VB6 and PHP, and know a little C and C++, so I'm trying to learn where people get the best-rated addon components for it, and especially for this PDF viewer and form filler thing he wants.

  I've been programming both in Unix and Windows environments. Mostly I've worked in Unix, where I've learned Unix Philosophy, which can be summarized as Write programs that do one thing and do it well. Write programs to work together. Write programs to handle text streams, because that is a universal interface. There seems to be a clear difference in programming cultures between Unix and Windows worlds, for example: GUI vs CLI Registry vs config files Lots of tools specializing for any given need vs group of generic orthogonal tools which can combined Is there equivalent of "Unix philosophy" in Windows world? What Unix-programmer can learn from Windows or should be aware of when moving to programming in Windows? I would like answers to focus on the best practices of Windows programming (and not a fight between Windows and Unix).

• What is a good use case for scala?
