  • Text Editor with SSH/Terminal/FTP/Putty combo for develeping in Rails on Windows

    - by Panoy
I plan to learn Ruby on Rails and would like to code in my development box which runs on Windows XP. I have Ubuntu Server (forgot the version ;p) running as my web server with Rails installed on it. I have been considering using Vim as my text editor of choice in XP but would like to know any text editor and accompanying shell/FTP/Putty/SSH (or whatever you may call it) program that can access those files in my Ubuntu server. It is better if the shell can be called or is bundled inside the text editor. I would like to know your combinations (text editor + shell) and your experiences on it when you were able to develop your Rails projects on that combination. Cheers!

  • New to world of Ubuntu

    - by Michael Raymond Cheney
I've been running Ubuntu 13.04 since June 2013, and upgrading to 13.10 as we speak.(Note I own total 3 laptops.) My goal is to have one complete Linux machine and one dual boot, and third well (he is a newer Lenovo with Windows 8.1 and is touch screen.) but I want to learn Ubuntu life and further myself with using it for everyday use, but I'm not very fluid in Linux usage and hoping to find people who have a love for teaching others how to be one with the BEST OS IN THE WORLD! Hope I've got few people wanting to teach or give good instruction for success. ~Mike Cheney~

  • Payback Is The Coupon King

    - by Troy Kitch
PAYBACK GmbH operates the largest marketing and couponing platforms in the world—with more than 50 million subscribers in Germany, Poland, India, Italy, and Mexico.  The Security Challenge Payback handles millions of requests for customer loyalty coupons and card-related transactions per day under tight latency constraints—with up to 1,000 attributes or more for each PAYBACK subscriber. Among the many challenges they solved using Oracle, they had to ensure that storage of sensitive data complied with the company’s stringent privacy standards aimed at protecting customer and purchase information from unintended disclosure. Oracle Advanced Security The company deployed Oracle Advanced Security to achieve reliable, cost-effective data protection for back-up files and gain the ability to transparently encrypt data transfers. By using Oracle Advanced Security, organizations can comply with privacy and regulatory mandates that require encrypting and redacting (display masking) application data, such as credit cards, social security numbers, or personally identifiable information (PII). - by hinkmond
Looks like Daniel Green, systems engineer from Oracle, and the panel of Java experts had a successful Java Technology booth at this year's Maker Faire 2012. See: Maker Faire 2012 adds Java Here's a quote: "We made a huge impact for Java and Oracle, creating positive perception, building brand awareness, and introducing fun and engaging ways for future technologists to learn Java programming," says Michelle Kovac, Oracle director, Java Marketing and Operations. Good stuff, considering all the future developers of exploding robots and fire-breathing dragon metal sculptures attend the Maker Faire. They can blow up stuff with Java technology just as effectively as other programming languages. Hinkmond

  • What is Object Oriented Programming ill-suited for?

    - by LeguRi
In Martin Fowler's book Refactoring, Fowler speaks of how when developers learn something new, they don't consider when it's inappropriate for the job: Ten years ago it was like that with objects. If someone asked me when not to use objects, it was hard to answer. [...] It was just that I didn't know what those limitations were, although I knew what the benefits were. Reading this, it occurred to me I don't know what the limitations or potential disadvantages of Object-Oriented Programming are. What are the limitations of Object Oriented Programming? When should one look at a project and think "OOP is not best suited for this"?

Where can I get a list of recommended PDF viewer and form-filler components that I can buy and install in C#? I query on C# component PDF viewer on Google and get a lot of hits, but I'm not certain what programmers have tried and liked. Background: See, my employer is wanting me to build one in C# as a kind of training exercise, but also to be a product for sales lead generation for another product they sell. The employer is perfectly okay buying something, as long as it's good. I've learned VB6 and PHP, and know a little C and C++, so I'm trying to learn where people get the best-rated addon components for it, and especially for this PDF viewer and form filler thing he wants.

  • Best Game Engine/Framework and Language for 2D actor/sprite intensive game

    - by Grungetastic
I'm new to the game dev world. I have a rather large project in mind (I learn by setting myself challenges :P ) and I'm wondering what the best engine/framework/language is for a 2D game with thousands of sprites/actors on screen at a time. Bare metal type stuff. I need to still be able to zoom in and out with that many actors at once. This game will have no 3D elements. Any thoughts? Suggestions?

  • Is there a Windows philosophy of programming?

    - by Maglob
I've been programming both in Unix and Windows environments. Mostly I've worked in Unix, where I've learned Unix Philosophy, which can be summarized as Write programs that do one thing and do it well. Write programs to work together. Write programs to handle text streams, because that is a universal interface. There seems to be a clear difference in programming cultures between Unix and Windows worlds, for example: GUI vs CLI Registry vs config files Lots of tools specializing for any given need vs group of generic orthogonal tools which can combined Is there equivalent of "Unix philosophy" in Windows world? What Unix-programmer can learn from Windows or should be aware of when moving to programming in Windows? I would like answers to focus on the best practices of Windows programming (and not a fight between Windows and Unix).

  • Learning Zend Framework 1 or 2?

    - by ehijon
I have programmed for a few years in php and now I'm going to learn zend framwork. Zend is very popular and there are a lot of tutorials, books and documentation out there. But I saw in the last months that there is a second version of Zend, but it's not so used and popular, not yet. I think it is better to start with a new version, but I don't know what to do now, as when I see job offers many people require the first version. Which version do you suggest me?

  • What is a good use case for scala?

    - by Usman Ismail
In a current project we have setup the build so that we could mix Java and Scala. I would like to use more Scala in our code base to make the code more readable and concise. In the process also learn the language by handing over real features. So I plan to use Scala for some classes to showcase its benefits and convince other devs to look into using Scala too. For a rest based web server or a program in general what kind of code structures lend themselves to Scala's functional programming style.
