• How can I play different sounds each time I startup?

  I have read questions on Changing startup sound in Ubuntu and Changing startup music in Ubuntu. I understand how to rename 'desktop-login.ogg' and copy the sound I want as 'desktop-login.ogg'. My question is - is there a way I can play different sounds each time I login? It may sound silly, but if possible I would like to play different sounds. I am guessing that this may be perhaps possible by running some kind of script which replaces/renames the desktop-login.ogg file each time I shutdown, so that a new file is ready to be played on the next startup. But I don't know how to copy a new file from a particular folder to desktop-login.ogg upon each shutdown, nor do I know where the script should reside. I would appreciate it if someone could tell me how to do it, or if there is an easier way of doing this. Thank you

  The task is to configure a piece of hardware within the device, according to some input specification. This should be achieved as follows: 1) Collect the configuration information. This can happen at different times and places. For example, module A and module B can both request (at different times) some resources from my module. Those 'resources' are actually what the configuration is. 2) After it is clear that no more requests are going to be realized, a startup command, giving a summary of the requested resources, needs to be sent to the hardware. 3) Only after that, can (and must) detailed configuration of said resources be done. 4) Also, only after 2), can (and must) routing of selected resources to the declared callers be done. A common cause for bugs, even for me, who wrote the thing, is mistaking this order. What naming conventions, designs or mechanisms can I employ to make the interface usable by someone who sees the code for the first time?

• how to get from 1 byte to 2 bytes

  I just got something I can't understand, so we have 1 byte, which is 8 bits, which is 2^8. Now 2 bytes should be 2 * 1 byte, which is 2 * 2^8 = 2^9, but actually 2 bytes is 2^16. What I'm missing here? I mean, it seems like 2 bytes isn't 2 * 1 byte, it's more like 1 byte * 1 byte, but this should give you byte^2, which doesn't make sense. Can Please someone explain me some concept I am getting wrong here? Thanks in advance.

If I can ask here about this particular one, it is a HTML5 site with a login/register form and a video player that has to play a lecture video and powerpoint slides synchronized.   I'm looking at a new chapter in my career. I'm a web developer, but now I'm starting to play around with C, compilers, and things I didn't have to work with before. It's all very intriguing! As I'm getting more and more into the "lower level" arena, I'm wondering how devices (mice, printers, webcams, microphones, etc...) are controlled, managed, detected, or used in general with software. • Skype locking up, and microphone "lagging"

  Hi. I've always had this problems with skype and pulseaudio on ubuntu. Whenever i start up skype, i have to call someone, then hang up 4-5 times, before the other person can hear my voice. When i, or the other person hang up, skype tends to lock up. I can't kill it with "killall skype" or a logout, so i have to restart my computer. Have anyone else encountered this problem, and if so solved this? I'm using 10.10 btw.

• Java Preferential Treatment

  I have icedtea6-plugin installed on my Ubuntu box. The weird thing is, when I am browsing the internet, certain website are able to use the Java and some websites are not. For instance, I am able to log in to my bank at nordea.dk. They use a Java applet to authenticate the user. But when I try to use keepvid.com, it says "Loading Java Applet". And then after a minute or two it says "Error: Please click here to download Java. If you already have Java, please restart your browser and try again." The thing is I've restarted my computer, closed and opened my browser(chromium) and none of it seems to help. Could someone please point me in the right direction to solve this problem? Thanks.

I would also like it to scroll slightly to the left and right when the player reaches the sides of the screen. Finally, how would I make this efficient? • Settlers-like terrain representation

  Remember this beauty? I'm playing it now on my old Amiga 1200. My question is: How do you think they represented the terrain, data structure wise? Obviously it's some kind of points, with a height. Or hexagons. And how did they decide which dots were buildable? EDIT: I could rephrase the question to say "how do I achieve this kind of terrain", but I would still only be interested in how to do it on a machine with 1 MB of RAM and a 7 Mhz processor, because this is the machine i currently developing games for. If that seems like a vague or meaningless question to you, that's alright, but I'm still curious if someone has any knowledge about this.

  So. I'm working right now as an intern in a mobile game development company. I've used Unity quite a lot for 1 year now but, that's about all the experience I have with game design/development. Here's the things. I wanna go indie, the main reason is for fun, I really enjoy games and by making indie games I believe I can let my imagination fly and make personal personal stuff. Unfortunately I...I just don't know where to start! I'm interestes in making mobile and web games so what...should I download Stencyl? • Ubuntu13.10 64 bit installed alongside windows 7 32bit doesn't boot

  I have installed Ubuntu 64-bit alongside windows 7 32-bit. (Windows installed first.) The installation was successful, but when I restart it just goes directly to windows 7 without any sign of existence of Ubuntu. I'm a beginner who just wanted to get familiar with Ubuntu, but now I'm disappointed with it. Someone told me the not booting problem is related to EFI, but now I'm scared to play with this boot stuff because my information might be totally lost. How can I fix this boot problem and get to Ubuntu?

• Remove ubuntu when it's the only OS on the machine

  I've been trying for hours to remove ubuntu 12 which is the only OS on my laptop. I don't have a Windows installation there. I've followed various bits of help, including trying to get boot-repair to work (I just get error messages when I try to run the recommended commands). Please can someone tell me how to get rid of ubuntu? It won't recognise my .iso copy of Windows - tries to read the DVD and then just boots ubuntu anyway. The DVD is fine - I can use it on other computers and it's perfectly OK. Frances

• How to Automate Checking for Stolen Content?

  So I know about tools like Copyscape and Google Alerts.. great tools, but it's quite tedious for me to copy and paste an URL or phrase for every one of my pages in my sites. Is there any tool out there that monitors your website and emails you or alerts you whenever someone has stolen content from your site? The only service I know is CopySentry and honestly, it's too expensive for me since I got thousands of pages I want to monitor... Anyone else have this problem? or is it just me? • C++ developer looks for book(s) about Android apps & widgets (& services etc.) [on hold]

  I'm senior C++ developer, I have also programmed professionally j2me some years. I'd like to make some apps and widgets for Android and I'd like to read up a bit on this new java stuff Android is using. I have (of course) checked out some tutorials and so but it seems I miss the basics, I can compile some stuff (read: examples) in eclipse but I just don't know how to, for example, add a service or what an 'intent' is, why my widget isn't called but successfully launches the main app when clicked and so on. So, what is a really good book for someone that is a developer but mostly need the hard facts about developing something specific like Android apps & widgets? Thanks a bunch!

• Am I making the right decision to take Information technology/system as my course in college?

  I am a student who just ended my high school last year. I will be entering college any time between march to August. And.. I am thinking of studying Information technology/System as my course in college. The problem is, I am unsure if this is the right path for me. I don't know if this is what I really want for my future later on! Yes, I do love learning more about computers (prefer software to hardware). But what if I don't find them interesting later on when studying? I'm worried about that as I don't wanna regret later on. To add to that, my knowledge of programming and other software development is actually quite low. Can someone advise me on what should I do? Or tell me more about Information technology (what will I study later on in college and the career path)?

• Content from a domain I used to own is appearing in my twitter feed

  I had an old domain with a WordPress setup hosted by GoDaddy. I changed the business name and moved everything over to a new site, new domain, and new host a couple of years ago. I let the old domain expire. It was recently purchased by someone for cheap, article spun content. Now, anytime they post a new article, it's automatically posted to my Twitter account. I contacted them to remove this, but given the quality of their spun articles, I doubt they will remove it. Is there any recourse I have through Twitter or the host to get this removed?

• Orienting ship movement in asteroids [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Move sprite in the direction it is facing? I'm programming asteroids game. I'm trying to give velocity in the direction of ship face. I've tried using velocity.x = velocity.x * cos r, velocity.y = velocity.y * sin r where velocity is a vector and r is the angle rotated. but it's not moving in right direction. Could someone help with this problem? It is supposed to return the vector in which ship is facing. I don't understand the problem.

• Is there any simple C++ code to grab video from UVC webcam and display it simultaneously?

  I'm very very new to Linux and programming! I'm using ubuntu 11.10 - 64 bits with gcc 4.6.1 I've been searching online for an example C++ code that simply grabs video from a compliant UVC webcam and displays it simultaneously.. I need to compile it on gcc. In OpenCV, it's a very simple code less than 20 lines as I remember! I found this: http://v4l2spec.bytesex.org/spec/capture-example.html But it's very huge code relative to OpenCV code ?! and even when I tried to compile it using gcc.. I got many errors! I copied the code into a cpp file: cap.cpp then wrote in the terminal: gcc cap.cpp -o cap and the errors showed up... same errors with g++ I hope if someone can help me and tell me where can I find another simpler code? and how can I test it ? • Ubuntu 12.04 edit grub

  I just install Ubuntu 12.04. I want to change the boot order of grub. Previous versions of grub.cfg I was able to change the permissions and the do a gedit. After reloading 12.04, I was able to change permissions for grub.cfg, but gedit will not let me save it. I am a little irritated that Ubuntu is suppose to be open source. However someone has chosen to lock one out of a file. I do realize that some people have no business doing a edit on grub. I am a long time user of Unix and Linix.

• can we make skype video hover like the windows version?

  Oke my question is simple, My parents have a windows pc, and have skype on it. and when they are on skype they can go on the internet and still have a small video hovering over their browser and keep doing two thinks. • How can I remap my keys to act like the Macintosh keyboard (like hold alt l + l click = r click)?

  I want my keyboard layout to act like a Macintosh keyboard. It's hard to use my computer after years on a mac. I want to disable my right mouse click, and replace it with alt + right mouse click. The alt key will also act like ctrl. I want my left ctrl to be the HUD key. I still want my super key to be the same. Can someone please make a script, or point me in the direction of a program to do all this with ease. If you were to make a script/whatever, can you please make one what will reverse all keyboard changes in-case I feel that it is not the same. I will add to the post if I miss anything. Thank you.

  I would like to install the latest version of Bibletime (2.9.1) on my computer because the version in the official repositories (2.8.1) has a bug with the "Mag" feature. I had installed 2.9.1 on 12.04 32 bit through one of the following ppa's: ppa:pkgcrosswire/ppa ppa:pkgcrosswire/developer-testing Now on an Ubuntu 12.04.1 64 bit, I'm getting a dependency issue. It seems that it depends on libsword8 but it should actually depend on libsword9 which is available in the repositories.
