• Cloud computing cost savings for large enterprise

  I'm trying to understand whether cloud computing is meant for small to medium sized companies OR also for large companies. Imagine a website with a very large user base. The storage and bandwidth demands as well as the number of database transactions are incredibly high. The website might be hosting videos, music, images, etc. that keep the demands high. Does it make sense to be in the cloud when you know you need huge volumes of storage, bandwidth, and GET,PUT,etc. requests? (Each of these variables costs money in the cloud) OR does it make sense to build your own infrastructure? I can see the cost savings of cloud computing if you are a small business, but if you were aiming at the next big thing on the Internet, I can't quite see the benefits.

• Working on the search

  The one thing I've always like working on and about this site, is the full text search engine and spider. Bascially it goes out and spiders all the major development blogs on the web, and then indexes them. The engine uses Lucene for it's index. Lucene is another open source project and it works really fast. Currently the directory is indexed, and the rss feeds are underway. We're talking about a lot of content, but once it's done you'll be able to pull podcasts, and videos as they get posted to...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • bootloader install failed

  I have lenovo u510 with windows 8. This ultrabook has 24GB SSD and I tried to install Ubuntu 12.04.3 in it. I changed bios from UEFI to legacy and I used a LiveDVD. I created a 17GB partition when I was in windows from this SSD and I tried both manualy or with the "install alongside" but was allways without success because bootloader install failed and was unable to install GRUB. I tried also to use the "recommended repair" from Boot-Repair but it says that my laptop can only with UEFI boot. I changed it but the same thing happens my laptop boot in windows 8.

• C# Rendering Engine for Roguelike [closed]

  I'm trying my hand at designing a roguelike, and I need a pretty simple 2D rendering engine that works with C# Its as simple as it gets, I want to be able to drop sprites somewhere on a grid, with some sort of menus/text on the side; that sort of thing. The (very complicated) game itself would be decoupled from the interface I've looked into a number of engines and they all seem to be very complicated/support much more things than I need. Right now I'm planning on making my own using either XNA or OpenTK - but I was wondering whether anyone has any suggestions for less-complicated rendering engines which might make my job easier. • SMS ad service for a php app.

  I am about to launch a website that allows the end user to get alerted as their bus approches the stop. The only problem was this is a little expensive as I'm paying about 5 cents per alert. I was thinking that if i added a short message something like "brought to you by acme co" at the end of the message I may be able to recoup cost without making my service a paid one. Anyone know of any SMS ad companies or how one would go about finding one. Google has failed me, probably searching for the wrong thing.

• Ubuntu 12.10 update doesnt boot. (please help)

  my name is Anthony. I updated to 12.10 and it the OS will not load accept in "pae" under advanced options. I used the boot repair cd, the only thing that workds is the monodeset option in the kernel and the graphics are terrible, mouse disappears and unity will not boot. Ubuntu 12.04 Runs great, on a clean install of 12.10 Ubuntu 12.10 wont even load to install unless under monodeset. I get left a termial like screen with just a bilking bar. Im running a HP Compaq NC6400 Laptop, Ubuntu 32-bit, 2gb ram.

• How serious/common are wordpress updating issues

  I am currently deciding between a CMS (joomla OR wordpress )to dive deep into. I think I would go for wordpress, but the only thing thats holding me back are any potential issues with updating wordpress- that updating wordpress can break plugins, but is necessary because of security issues. How drastic are the changes in wordpress? say over a period of 2-3 years? from the perspective of someone intending to dive head first in its code. Should I fear regular updates breaking stuff ? • Can I get the classic "run command" window

  I love unity but I hate it when alt+f2 brings up the dash. Is it possible to just remap alt+f2 so that the thing looks like exactly the old alt+f2 I know what I want is like going back in time but I really loved that fast command runner in old gnome. I can bring up terminal using ctrl+alt+T and run anything I want but it sometimes is a overkill to bring up something like that for small things. And I used to like the fact that older window was fast, had autofill and would disappear after launching the command. Or is there a utilty that looks somewhat like that and can be installed and mapped to some key.

• Very slow system after installing 13.10?

  Just "upgraded" from 13.04 to 13.10 on my Acer C7 Ubuntu'd Chromebook and first thing I noticed is that everything is very slow and unresponsive. Hardly had this on 13.04. Opened system monitor to check processes and I saw that compiz is consistently using 20-80% of my CPU, even on idle. I tried installing Compizconfig, but it doesn't start up at all. This is the final release, not a beta. How can I make it more responsive - like it should be?

• Photo and Video backup [closed]

  Apologies if this is the wrong forum. Please move if necessary I want to back up all my photos and videos online. Some videos are HD and up to 2GB in size. Does anyone know of any good sites? Flcker and Picasca seem the obvious ones but there seem to be limits on size. I have also heard bad things about the Picasca UI. I basically want to remove most of the photos from my laptop HD and then sync with web when I want to download them. Viewing via mobile is not a big thing for me. I just want somewhere save to back up stuff. Thanks

• Can software company claim the intellectual property rights on my paintings?

  This is somewhat related to this question. I'm about to sign a contract with a company that this sort of "all your base are belong to us" clause in it: it says that all programs, designs, sketches, drawings I create in relation to my job belong to the company. More or less usual stuff (unfortunately). What worries me, however, is this "drawings, sketches" thing, because I'm a hobby-artist and I paint and draw at my spare time. Can the company somehow claim ownership of intellectual rights on this work? Should I ask them to explicitly state that this clause does not extend to work of art or is this "in relation to the job" part is good enough?

I'm drawing with: glVertexAttribIPointer(0, 2, GL_UNSIGNED_INT, 0, 0); glEnableVertexAttribArray(0); glBindBuffer(GL_ARRAY_BUFFER, vbo); glDrawArrays(GL_POINTS, 0, n_points); glDisableVertexAttribArray(0); and on the shader #version 330 core #extension GL_ARB_shading_language_packing : require in uvec2 A0; // (...) vec4 t = vec4(unpackHalf2x16(A0.x), unpackHalf2x16(A0.y)); But nothing gets drawn. I'm pretty sure buffer's content is right, and if I use vec4 t = vec4(0); I can see it's working properly. How is this packing / unpacking thing supposed to work? I can't find any example.

• Does Ubuntu ever push new versions of GCC into the package repository between releases?

  Current version of GCC in Ubuntu 11.04 is 4.5.2. For certain C++0x features, I need GCC version 4.6, but would like to avoid compiling from source. Is there hope that Ubuntu will update GCC in the package repository before the next release in October (11.10). This question asks a similar thing except for an earlier version of Ubuntu and GCC. A second part of the question, if the answer is "no" to the first, then can I hope to see it appear in Ubuntu's unstable repository?

I have to deal with business people all the time and many of the things I create can have profound impacts on the business. I am starting to regret not taking any business classes in college because I don't understand the first thing about running a business so I don't always understand what people are wanting, the best I can do is "think through it".   Let me give you an example of how I name my classes alphabetically: Car CarHonda (subclass of Car) CarHondaAccord (subclass of CarHonda) There are two reasons why I put the type of the class earlier in its name: When browsing your files alphabetically in a file explorer, related items appear grouped together and parent classes appear above child classes. I can progressively refine auto-complete in my IDE. First I type the major type, then the secondary type, and so on without having to memorize what exactly I named the last part of the thing. My question is why do I hardly see any other programmers do this? They usually name things in reverse or some random order. Take the iOS SDK for example: UIViewController UITableViewController What are the disadvantages of my naming convention and the advantages of their convention?

Anyway I wanted to if by installing ubuntu on my old laptop hdd (I now use it as external storage), can I run it on my laptop which has windows installed. I can't take the chance of installing on the laptop as I'm currently studying, and I have a years worth of work on here (most backed up elsewhere), and will be using it a lot. However there are some programmes I can use if I can get ubuntu that will be helpful for one or two classes. Sorry for the very basic question.

  Pretty simple question. Should package structure closely resemble class hierarchy? If so, how closely? Why or why not? For instance, let's say you've got class A and class B, plus class AFactory and class BFactory. You put class A and class B in the package com.something.elements, and you put AFactory and BFactory in com.something.elements.factories. AFactory and BFactory would be further down the hierarchy package-wise, but they'd be further up class-wise. Is this sort of thing a good idea or a bad idea?

• IPC linux huge transaction

  I'm building and application that requires huge transactions/sec of data and I need to use IPC to for the mutithreaded mutliprocceses communication, I know that there are a lot of methods to be used but not sure which one to choose for this application. This is what the application is gonna have, 4 processes, each process has 4 threads, the data chunk that needs to be transferred between two or more threads is around 400KB. I found that fifo is good choice except that it's 64K which is not that big so i'll need to modify and recompile the kernel but not sure if this is the right thing to do? Anyway, I'm open to any suggestions and I'd like to squeeze your experience in this :) and I appreciate it in advance.

• What are the technial and programming requirements for writing a stealth keylogger?

  I'm planning to write/code one such stealth keylogger that would bypass detection by a certain antivirus. (I don't want to name the vendor as I know how good Google queries are against StackExchange websites). I don't want to just download any keylogger from internet and try to encode it to evade detection. Writing code myself I would have the ability to make changes as I go; obscuration on both high-level and low-level language. I like control too.   My application has a number of different asynchronous 'things' that it performs: There are things that fire off a schedule (every 5 minutes) There are things that are fired when a user clicks a button There are things that are triggered by an incoming web service call I use the terms like this: Scheduled things = Jobs User-triggered things = Tasks Web service-triggered things = Operations Tasks are quite complicated, so they're implemented using a hierarchy of different objects which I call Activities (operations and jobs may also begin to use these Activities as their building blocks). I feel like I might be using the wrong terms - for example, would you expect something that happens every 5 minutes automatically to be a Job or a Task? Is there an industry standard for this? All of the words seem to mean the same thing.

One thing in my list are problems arising from improper wake-ups from suspend or hibernate as they may also affect network accessibility. This is why I thought setting up power management to "shutdown" on closing the laptop lid could be a good idea. However I am not sure if this is a safe way to do. What problems in addition to software not closing properly (and thus not saving their data) could I be faced if I proceeded as planned?

• viewing fbx files in windows via xna 4.0

  I've made some models in Blender and exported them in Autodesk fbx format. I'm trying to view them using XNA 4.0 Refresh. Loading them isn't much an issue, but I'm not familiar enough with XNA 4.0 to, well basically I want to load in the model at say the origin (0,0,0) world coordinates, and then rotate and/or zoom the camera about the world coordinates origin as well so that I can test the model. Typically the mouse, and maybe some arrow keys for zooming/rotating the camera. Anyways, this seems like a simple task and I shouldn't have to re-invent this, isn't there a skeleton code somewhere for this kind of thing for XNA 4.0? I couldn't find a solid example for this on the web. I found a couple that seemed like they might work for xbox, but I'm trying to do this on windows only. Anyways, just looking to be pointed in the right direction on this one, thanks.
