• Cant kill process on Windows Server 2008!! - Thread in Wait:Executive State

  I hope someone can help me with our issue we are having. We have a major issue with a process that we can not kill and the only way to get rid of the process is to reboot the machine. I have tried killing it from the normal task manager but no joy. I have tried killing it using the taskkill /F command from a command prompt and no joy. The command reports as sucessful but the process remains. I have tried to start task manager with system rights by calling "psexec -s -i -d taskmgr" and attempting to kill the process but no joy I have tried killing it from Process Explorer but again the process remains. I have tried creating a scheduled task that runs under the SYSTEM name to kill the task but that also does not kill it : schtasks /create /ru system /sc once /st 13:16 /tn test1 /tr "taskkill /F /PID 1576" /it Nothing I do will kill this process. Even logging off and logging back on will not kill this process. Using Process Explorer I notice that there is on stubborn thread that is in the Wait:Executive state. I have tried to kill this thread using Process Explorer but again no joy. We are using Windows Server 2008 R2 64-Bit. The server is brand new and windows is freshly installed. Now heres the thing. We have brought two identical servers from Dell with the same specs and the same OS installed and I can not replicate this issue on the other server. Only on this server, under certain circumstances does this server process hang and can not be restarted! I have also changed the compatability mode by setting it the process to "Windows 2003" but this has not helped. I have noticed in Process Explorer that DEP is turned on but im not sure this has got any bearing on the issue ot not. Please, can someone help??

• Desktop PC does not power up on power button

  When I press the power button on my desktop, it does not power up completely. Before I press the power button, I see lights on the motherboard. Everything is normal. On power button press, the fans on the cpu, graphics card and motherboard start to spin a little for a second or two and then they stop. No beeps during this process. It has been doing this for a while now but it used to start up after some trials. Once it starts up, I have NO issues at all like random shutdowns so it is not an issue with OS. Update: I left the desktop off for a few days and it started. I'm just guessing here but it seems as if the PSU (Antec TP2-550ATX) is dying out and does not have enough power now - just a guess. It's an old desktop assembled in 2005 but I have maintained it well. Update: I always keep the desktop running and I never shut it down. During updates or manual restarts, it powers up without issues. I wonder if this sheds lights on the issue. Any idea how I can narrow down the issue? ex: if I can find if the PSU is dying etc. I'd really like to fix the issue. Please help. Thanks. Below is the complete configuration. • Using Windows 7 XP Mode for games

  Hi all. I have Win 7 (x64) at home and I want to play some old games (specifically Lands of Lore 3, but also some others). This game does not work properly on Win 7, and there are no patches that I'm aware of to fix its issues. Can I use XP Mode to play this game (and other non Win 7 nice games), or is there a better way? I only have one PC and dual booting scares me... (so no to dual booting!) Another question: Will I have full hardware support (full use of my graphics card, etc) when I use DOSbox or a VM? I have decided to go with VirtualBox or vmware, I'll check which one gives the best performance, thanks for your input!

• Lenovo System Update Breaks Windows Live

  Hey everyone, I've been racking my brain (and fingers from typing) trying to solve this issue to no avail. I have a Lenovo computer and I install their system update tool to install all my missing drivers. However after this tool is installed Windows Live 2011 breaks, it will no longer sign in giving error number 8e5e0247 all the solutions online haven't helped. It appears that a language setting somewhere gets set to en_ms, and I'm en_ca. My computer is running Windows 7 x64. When i try to sign onto messenger it gives an error that (with some research) means your locale or language is not supported, I've searched my computer for any reference to en_ms but find none. Also a few other things seem to have broken, When a UAC box comes up it is no longer able to identify the publisher of anything, and also the indexing service does not work (I'm not sure if the indexing issue is related, but the UAC issue happened right after installation), I had this issue before but I don't remember how I fixed it, I believe it had something to do with environmental variables. When it goes to sign in it gets as far as the "Loading contacts" then stops and goes back to the sign in screen. Has anyone seen this before? Thanks

• Emails not sending from outlook / OWA - Not even hitting the mail queue in exchange

  We are having an issue this morning where we can receive external emails but cannot send internal or external ones from Outlook or OWA. If I use: Send-MailMessage –From <[email protected]> –To <[email protected]> –Subject “Test #01”-Body “Just a test message.” –SMTPServer <Server-Name> –Credential <domain\user> the email is sent correctly which makes me think there is a connection issue with OWA and Outlook. However, outlook is reporting as Connected with exchange. I have checked the message tracking in exchange tools and emails sent via outlook and OWA do not appear. Nothing has changed on the server on the weekend so I don't really know where to start debugging this issue. We are using Windows SBS 2011. We only have one send connector which isn't using Smart Hosts and is set to use DNS MX records. Use external DNS is not checked and I can ping google.com etc so doesn't appear to be a DNS issue (plus the email sends from the console anyway). EDIT It appears that users using IMAP can send emails correctly, its only ones that rely on the normal exchange connection type that don't work. EDIT Emails from IMAP are hitting the email queue's where as emails from the normal exchange accounts aren't. EDIT It seems that some of the emails we tried to send yesterday sent at about 1am but now it won't work again..

• OS X (10.6) Apache Sudden Death, Nginx not working either...

  Hi, I turned on my computer today and apache wasn't working. This is weird as its been working for the last 6 months without issue. The only thing I did which may of caused a problem, is I uninstalled a bunch of gems. This shouldn't be the issue though as apache doesn't rely on gems. I decided to give nginx a try to see if it would work and have the exact same issue. The symtoms are: I go to http://localhost and get the browsers default 404 page (not rendered by apache/nginx) No error is found anywhere (I checked all logs) Apache is rinning (also tried with Nginx) How can I debug this to find the root of the problem? I can't think of why this would be happening. I've tried repairing permissions in case this was the issue, apparently it wasn't. Everything was working the other day, and nothing changed in the apache config.   I have a running setup as following: Native OS: Windows 7 64bit, 3 Partitions: c: (System) d: (FAT32, here is my vdi file) e: (unformatted) VirtualBox: Fedora 14 running off the vdi file on drive d. Usually this setup is great for me, but sometimes I'd like to run Linux natively, and not inside VirtualBox. Is there a way to boot directly into the vdi file without the Windows overhead? E.g. using a USB stick with some modified Linux Kernel / GRUB that can mount the vdi file directly as "/"? Or copy the contents of my vdi file to the empty partition and somehow use this from VirtualBox (when booting into Windows) AND directly booting into Linux? Hope to get some hints or even howtos. • Mavericks permission issues with Windows Server deduplicated shares

  We have a number of 10.9-10.9.3 - Mavericks - machines installed throughout our facility. Much of the user content is pulled from shares stored on our Windows Server 2012 fileservers with deduplication enabled. I have found that files newly written or unoptimized are able to be accessed without issue - read, written, modified, etc. Once the file gets optomized/deduplicated and Windows adds the P & L attributes - sparse and symlink - the Macs running Mavericks begin to have access issues. Once the files get deduplicated, users begin receiving read access errors when copying files (see error1 below). This happens when copying to folders within the current folder tree or copying somewhere to the local system. If you 'stop' the copy operation and retry a few more times, it may eventually work for the specific instance but fail again later. I am however, able to copy these files without issue via the terminal. Other systems running 10.7 do not experience the same issues and are able to access file server resources without issue. Many of the systems having issues are newer and thus not able to be downgraded to 10.8 or 10.7. I have tried finder replacements such as Pathfinder but the results are the same. I know this is at least similar to the issues many Mac users are already experiencing and posting about but I haven't seen it directly linked to deduplication and the attributes written by Windows server. Has anyone seen this issue? Have any solutions been found? Error 1: When copying files after the PL attributes have been set by deduplication. "One or more items can't be copied to "Foler" because you don't have permissions to read them. ******************************************' Via the system.log, I am also seeing the following error when accessing these deduplicated file shares. The reparse point tag listed below is "IO_REPARSE_TAG_DEDUP" Reported error: "smbfs_nget: filename.ext - unknown reparse point tag 0x80000013"

• Windows undetectable after interrupted chkdsk

  I have a computer that is running Windows XP. For some reason, the other day it wouldn't start giving me the following message: "ntoskrnl.exe is missing or corrupt" So I put the XP disc in the tray and fired up the repair console and ran the following: chkdsk /r It was on for about eight hours and it got to about 52% I believe. Then there was a power outage and the computer shut down (obviously). Today when I was booting it, it isn't even detecting there's an OS anymore. If I boot the computer with no cd in the tray it says: "Reboot and select a proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key" If I run the repair console, or the xp installation program it isn't finding any OS installations. Any ideas on what to do next? Any help is appreciated. Thanks! Update: After turning boot-time diagnostics on, I got this message when booting without cd (instead of the previous one): "Couldn't open drive multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)"

• JFFS2 poor mount performance

  I run multiple ARM boards with Debian Linux installed. Board is equipped with 512 MB of NAND memory. I've observed that after ~3 months of continuous run booting time increased significantly - it takes over 3 minutes to mount filesystem (JFFS2). System was using about 35% of available storage so I’ve removed unnecessary files (got to ~18%) but this didn't change anything. Then I realized that my software produces directories that are left empty so I’ve removed ~500 empty and unnecessary dirs. This didn’t help either. After system is started I see JFFS2 garbage collector (jffs2_gcd_mtd4) running and occupying over 90% of CPU. Now my question: is there a way to „optimize” JFFS2 filesystem for better performance - faster booting (my system have limited timid to boot up)? It would be great if this optimization could be done remotely - I have no physical access to boards.

  We have a site that runs PHP-FPM and NGINX. The application sends invitations to site members that are keyed with 40 character random strings (alphanumerics only -- example below). Today for the first time we ran into an issue with this approach. The following url: http://oursite.com/notices/response/approve/1960/OzH0pedV3rJhefFlMezDuoOQSomlUVdhJUliAhjS is returning a 404 error. This url format has been working for 6 months now without an issue, and other urls following this exact format continue to resolve properly. We have a very basic config with a simple redirect to a front controller, and everything else has been running fine for a while now. Also, if we change the last character from an "S" to anything other than a lower-case "s", no 404 error and the site handles the request properly, so I'm wondering if there's some security module that might see something wrong with this specific string... Not sure if that makes any sense. We are not sure where to look to find out what specifically is causing the issue, so any direction would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Update: Adding a slash to the end of the url allowed it to be handled properly... Would still like to get to the bottom of the issue though. Solved: The problem was caused by part of my configuration... Realized I should have posted, but was headed out of town and didn't have a chance. Any url that ended in say "css" or "js" and not necessarily preceded by a dot (so, for example, http://site.com/response/somerandomestringcss ) was interpreted as a request for a file and the request was not routed through the front controller. The problem was my regex for disabling logging and setting expiration headers on jpgs, gifs, icos, etc. I replaced this: location ~* ^.+(jpg|jpeg|gif|css|png|js|ico)$ { with this: location ~* \.(jpg|jpeg|gif|css|png|js|ico)$ { And now urls ending in css, js, png, etc, are properly routed through the front controller. Hopefully that helps someone else out.

• BSOD During Windows 7 Install

  I current have a working XP partition a Dell XPS m1330 laptop along with a working Ubuntu partition. After launching the Windows 7 install DVD from within XP I run through the options for a custom install on a free NTFS partition. Everything seemingly works as it should and then my computer restarts. After choosing to boot into the newly created Windows partition I am given the Windows 7 splash screen only to be followed by the BSOD. Here are the stop codes from the BSOD: stop: 0x0000007b (0x80D86B58,0xc0000034,0x00000000,0x0000000) Googling this tells me that it indicates an 'inaccessable boot drive'. Is it possible that its having problems booting from this partition due to the other existing partitions? I'm thinking that there may be a windows recovery CD workaround this but I am not quite proficient in its capabilities. This is what happens when I try to install by booting from the DVD

• How computers display raw, low-level text and graphics

  My ever-growing interest in computers is making me ask deeper questions, that we don't seem to have to ask anymore. Our computers, at boot, as far as I understand it, are in text mode, in which a character can be displayed using the software interrupt 0x10 when AH=0x0e. We've all seen the famous booting font that always looks the same, regardless of what computer is booting. So, how on earth do computers output graphics at the lowest level, say, below the OS? And also, surely graphics aren't outputted a pixel at a time using software interrupts, as that sounds very slow? Is there a standard that defines basic outputting of vertices, polygons, fonts, etc. (below OpenGL for example, which OpenGL might use)? What makes me ask is why OS' can often be fine without official drivers installed; how do they do that? Apologies if my assumptions are incorrect. I would be very grateful for elaboration on these topics!

• Cannot access boot menu with compaq 8510p

  I have a problem with my HP compaq 8510p laptop: when I start it, the fan starts and the power light is on, but the screen displays nothing. When I insert a bootable hard drive, it activates the hard drive light (meaning that the CD is recognized) but it stops after a few seconds. Same thing with any hard drive: the drive is recognized but does not boot. What I've tried so far: Changing the hard drive or booting with no hard drive (same problem) Plugging anoher display via VGA : no display on the other screen Inserting a windows-7 CD (same problem) Booting only on battery, with battery and power cable, only with power cable (same problem) So it looks like something is preventing the laptop from booting and displaying the boot menu. Do you have experienced something similar with a laptop ? What could be wrong ? The laptop is out of warranty. The system used to be windows-7 x64. Edit: I went to the help desk of my university. A guy took a look (he also tried to plug an external screen) and said that the computer is dead: on the HP laptops eventually the GPU card dies and so does the motherboard because they are linked. He saw this many times, and even if I can fix the problem, the laptop would crash again after a while. Do you have similar experience with HP laptops ? (mine is 4 years old) Edit 2: Believe it or not, my laptop is magically working again. I have no clue about what is going on. Now it is like starting and old car: when you turn it on you secretly hope it will actually start... With that said, I expect my laptop to break again in the near future (its an HP after all) and I will accept an answer or add my own accordingly. Edit 3: As expected, the laptop is down again. This time, sometimes when I power it up, it shuts down automatically after 3 seconds, sometimes not at all. In addition, when it does not shut down on its own, the power button does not work : the only way to shut it down is by unplugging the battery. As before, the screen is black, and only the power and battery lights are on. (the other ones: hard drive and wifi are off). I have tried to plug in another power plug, removing the battery and removing the hard drive without success. I might buy another laptop. I've brought the laptop to a repair shop. The problem is indeed that the graphic card is down. It will be replaced by a new one.

• Out of memory errors but not actually out of memory...

  So, myself and my fellow support techs have been fighting with this issue and we still dont know what the problem is. Lets start off with the system specs: Windows XP 32 bit Corporate (SP2 and SP3) Intel D975XBX2 Mobo 4gb of ram Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 ATI Radeon HD 3600 - 512mb After a few hours of working on the machine, the end user will begin to see the following symptoms: Out of memory messages Title bars and menus dont draw in properly Problems accessing network resources Problems opening up documents such as MSWord and MSPowerpoint and text files Problems opening up explorer windows General instability We have looked at task manager while this issue was occurring, and all indicators, like PF usage, threads, handles, etc. are normal. We have been having trouble pinpointing the root cause of this issue. It is also not situated with one user, it affects 8-10. So far we have tried: Resetting CMOS (Waiting to see results) Replacing video card (didnt help) Windows updates (didnt help) Updating network drivers (didnt help) Switching user from 1gbps to 100mbps network connection (awaiting results) Swapping the affected user's hardware (waiting for results) Increasing desktop heap size (helped for a bit but then the issue became more frequent) Applying the /3 switch to XP (didnt help) Increasing and decreasing and setting PF to system managed state (didnt help) We did have a power outage at the office a couple weeks ago, and all these issues became more frequent. Prior to the power outage it may take a week or so for the users to experience the issues but since the power outage it takes 3-4 hours or less. We havent had reports of the above issues causing BSODs, although that would be easier to diagnose :). Any help is greatly appreciated.

• Running ubuntu 10.04 without a laptop's primary display

  I have an IBM thinkpad(R50e) whose display is broken. I would still like to use the laptop by connecting it to an external monitor and keyboard/mouse. This is what I did: Removed the hard disk from the broken IBM Put the hard disk in the working IBM and installed 10.04 on it. It booted fine and I installed many packages and stuff. I put the hard disk back into the broken display IBM thinking I could use it by connecting it to an external monitor that I own. Well, it turns out that while booting, the display shows up but because the display shifts from the VGA display to the primary display mid-boot, the laptop does not boot. Is there a way in which I can force the laptop to not use its primary display while booting. I looked at Randr and also grub.conf settings but nothing seemed to work. Please help!

• Why is my computer randomly restarting? How can I fix it?

  I have a custom built desktop computer that I've been using since about a year ago. The main specs are: ASUS P8Z68-V LE Motherboard Intel Core i7 2600k Corsair Vengeance 16GB Ram ASUS ENGTX570 GPU Corsair TX650M PSU I was running an overclock of 4.4ghz for my cpu (I have a Hyper212 EVO) and 1600mhz for my RAM but have it currently turned off due to my issues. I am also currently running Windows 8 but this problem occured in Windows 7 too. Basically my issue is that seemingly randomly, with no pattern my PC will reset itself and ASUS Anti-Surge will alert me that something went wrong. This issue is not related to system stress. I can run it fine for an hour maxxed out on Prime95 then later I can be watching a mere YouTube video when it will randomly reset. This has been occurring probably for the last two weeks and it seems to be getting worse. I believe this might be related to the power supply but when I monitor it in the bios and in Windows it appears to be putting out the proper voltages. Also possibly related or not but my Nvidia drivers frequently temporarily fail and then warn me of some kind of kernel error? If I have to buy a new power supply that is what I'll do but I want to make damn sure that's the only issue at hand. Thank you everyone in advance, please help me diagnose the issue and tell me what I can do to fix it. If you need any additional info about my setup please ask me.

• php-cgi.exe Taking out server, multiple running

  I have been using ZendServer CE for over a year and have never had a problem. Recently, about a week or two ago I have found my server to be acting up and even causing RDP to be un-connectable. After some looking around I have 20, 25, 30+ php-cgi.exe running. With my IIS7 service starting with Windows once my server started all these php-cgi.exe would start running (even though the limit is 10) and I could not even connect to it. After disabling the Web Server as startup which stops php-cgi.exe from running the server runs flawless, like it always has. As soon as I run the web server all these odd issues start. I have a post over at Zend http://forums.zend.com/viewtopic.php?f=44&t=41043&p=95133 where I was told to update my Zend install. After doing so this issue has not gone away. Even running 1 php-cgi.exe (somehow 2 start anyway) the server begins to go silly. The first issue I find myself with running php-cgi.exe is that Windows Services, weather be stock or using FireDaemon begin to lag, slow start, crash, etc. If anyone can help me with this I would GREATLY appreciate it. At this time I am forced to look for a alternative to running PHP other than cgi as it simply takes out the whole box. On another note, I run this same version of Zend on a similar server with no issues. Starting to think its a IIS issue. (UPDATE) Installed newest version of PHP, separate from Zend, same issue. • "Disk boot failure" error after installing Windows 7 on SSD

  I have a system with 3 SATA drives which runs fine. Got a new SSD drive and wanted to install a fresh Windows-7 on it. So I removed the boot drive and replaced it with the SSD drive. Installed Windows and when it was done, rebooted and now I get "Disk boot failure. Insert system disk and press enter" error message. I reinstall again and still same message. Removed the SSD and put back the original drive and I got the same message!! I checked the BIOS and things look good. Something is wrong. Two questions: 1- Why isn't the new Windows booting from the SSD? 2- Why isn't the machine booting using the previous working configuration anymore, after removing the SSD? I did connect it during the second Windows installation but it was the last drive in the SATA connector. Would Windows installer mess with its MBR sector?

  I've already exhausted my knowledge on this one, so forgive me if this post is a bit long. I built a computer 6 months ago for my wife and it worked fine until last week. Then it randomly shut down and would lock up while trying to boot on the boot screen. I cleared cmos and it allowed me to do startup recovery, but it "failed to fix the issue" so I reinstalled windows on the HD (moving the old install to windows_old). It worked, so I started installing drivers again, but then when I restarted to finalize installations it locked up again. This time, I took the hard drive and hooked it up to my computer, backed up all her files, and then formatted the hard drive before reinstalling it. (again had to clear cmos to let me boot from disk) It installed windows, I installed drivers, and it worked for a few hours but then died during startup again. So, then I got a new HD, cleared cmos, and installed clean again, with the same result as the time before, it worked for a few hours, installed windows updates, then crashed on the 3rd or 4th time turning it on. I decided next to try reinstalling and then going online to see if there were any updates for the BIOS or drivers on the Motherboard, but now I can't get it to even bring up the boot menu, so now I'm just left wondering was it the motherboard, or is it the CPU, or the RAM? The problem was strangely intermittent so I thought it had to be a software issue, since a hardware issue would ALWAYS fail to boot, right? But now it seems to be a hardware issue, because it's not bringing up anything. Any suggestions? • Lenovo System Update Breaks Windows Live

  Hey everyone, I've been racking my brain (and fingers from typing) trying to solve this issue to no avail. I have a Lenovo computer and I install their system update tool to install all my missing drivers. However after this tool is installed Windows Live 2011 breaks, it will no longer sign in giving error number 8e5e0247 all the solutions online haven't helped. It appears that a language setting somewhere gets set to en_ms, and I'm en_ca. My computer is running Windows 7 x64. When i try to sign onto messenger it gives an error that (with some research) means your locale or language is not supported, I've searched my computer for any reference to en_ms but find none. Also a few other things seem to have broken, When a UAC box comes up it is no longer able to identify the publisher of anything, and also the indexing service does not work (I'm not sure if the indexing issue is related, but the UAC issue happened right after installation), I had this issue before but I don't remember how I fixed it, I believe it had something to do with environmental variables. When it goes to sign in it gets as far as the "Loading contacts" then stops and goes back to the sign in screen. Has anyone seen this before? Thanks

• How to specify console (or primary display) for video adapter?

  I have an ASUS ENGT440/DI1GD5 video adapter which has three output ports: D-Sub (HD-15), DVI and HDMI. I am using both the D-Sub and DVI ports, but my main monitor is connected to the DVI output. Everything works fine except for which monitor is designated the console during boot. The video adapter seems to prefer the D-Sub output for the console. When both the VGA and DVI monitors are connected, then the VGA monitor always becomes the console which displays the motherboard logo, POST information and booting progress. When only the DVI monitor is connected, then it becomes the console as desired. How do I make the video adapter always use the DVI output (instead of the VGA port) for the console while booting?

• Ram not working in dual dynamic paging mode

  My motherboard is Intel D865GVHZ I m using 512 mb ram and recently i purchased a 512 mb ram of same company same speed(333) and same manufacturer. but my pc is not booting in dual dynamic paging mode . It is not at all booting and the screen freezes on windows logo screen at start up. i checked installing individual rams one by one and the pc is working with either of the ram installed individually. But wen i install both the pc is not working. One more point i found is my one ram has 8 chips on both sides while the other ram has 4 chips on both sides. Is that the root of the problem ?? plz help sir. in hope robin
