• Should I split my website into different servers

  I have a website where a user uploads photos, the photos gets resized and thumbnailed, and stored on the server. At the same time, there are some INSERTS into a MySQL table regarding the photo uploaded (like description, user id etc). The site currently runs off a managed VPS, and I love the support it provides. However it is expensive to store the many small photos and the resizing and thumbnailing processes do cause spikes on the app performance. (Amazon S3 is pretty expensive, especially considering the costs for uploading many small files) Question: Will it be a good idea to move the image processing operations and image storage to another server which is an unmanaged dedicated server with a much lower cost/gb and keep the current VPS for its 24/7 support and hosting the webapp? Or should I move the entire site to the dedicated server?   If you are an Oracle customer, you are probably familiar with Oracle ADF (Application Development Framework). If you are not, ADF is, in a nutshell, a Java EE based framework that simplifies the development of enterprise applications. It is the development framework that was used, among other things, to build Oracle Fusion Applications. Oracle has just released ADF Essentials, a free to develop and deploy version of Oracle ADF's core technologies. As a good news never come alone, GlassFish 3.1.2 is now a certified container for ADF Essentials! ADF Essentials leverage core ADF features and includes: Oracle ADF Faces - a set of more than 150 JSF 2.0 rich components that simplify the creation of rich Web user interfaces (charting, data vizualization, advanced tables, drag and drop, touch gesture support, extensive windowing capabilities, etc.) Oracle ADF Controller - an extension of the JSF controller that helps build reusable process flows and provides the ability to create dynamic regions within Web pages. • Which forum software has the most advanced community/GetSatisfaction type features?

  I need to assemble a GetSatisfaction/Lithium/Jive type support forum/community. The first is not available in the desired language and the last two are priced for the enterprise market. I did research some other options (open source or SaaS) but they all seem to be either: kind of dead (open source options) too focused in gathering ideas/feedback (uservoice) strictly support without the community/voting features (zendesk) I need an open forum (people powered support/UGC with community/voting features). Therefore I will have to do some of the work on my own. I want to piece things (plugins/mods/etc) on top of a standard forum platform to give it the features I need. For this purpose, I want to use a mature product with widespread userbase, active community and lots of plugin options. I believe most will agree that my options therefore are: vBulletin phpBB SMF Here are the questions: Which one of the three above offers the easier path towards the desired goal? Which one of the three above has the most advanced features related to the desired goal? Of course I dont expect anyone to know these answers cut and dry. I am hoping to hear some experiences and see some examples. Also, it would be great if both those questions had the same answer, but I am not going to get my hopes up... PS: I wish I could add the tags "phpbb" and "smf" ;)

  CodePlex is now able to talk to other services! For example, if you want CodePlex to tell Trello to update cards on your Trello board, it can do it. Or if you want CodePlex to notify your Campfire chat room when updates are pushed, it can do that too. To start off, we are going to be adding support for the following services: Campfire – Notify a Campfire chat room when commits occur HipChat – Notify a HipChat chat room when commits occur Trello – Add commit summaries to Trello cards by referencing those cards in commit messages Twitter – Notify your Twitter followers when updates are pushed to your project In addition, we will continue to support our existing integrations with Windows Azure – Continuously deploy to Windows Azure on pushes (For Git and Hg projects) AppHarbor – Continuously deploy to AppHarbor on pushes To set up these integrations for your project, navigate to the project settings page as a project coordinator, and click on the services section as seen below:   While we are starting with these six services, the infrastructure is now in place to allow us to quickly roll out new integrations. We would love to hear which services and integrations you would like to see most on our suggestions page. We realize that there are some services and URLs that only make sense for your project to send notifications to. To support this scenario, we plan to add generic web hooks in the near future. • How should I structure my database to gain maximum efficiently in this scenario?

  I'm developing a PHP script that analyzes the web traffic of my clients websites. By placing a link to a javascript on the clients website (think of Google Analyses), my script harvests information like: the visitors IP address, reference link, current page link, user agent, etc. Now my clients can view these statistics via a control panel that I have build. These clients can also adjust profile settings, set firewall rules, create support tickets and pay invoices. Currently all the the traffic is stored in one table. You can imagine that this tabel would become very large as some my clients receive thousands of pageviews per day. Furthermore, all the traffic data of each client would be stored in the same table, creating a mess. This is the same for the firewall rules currently, and the invoice and support system. I'm looking for way to structure my database in a more organized way to hold large amounts of data of multiple users. This is the first project that I'm developing that deals with so much data, and would like to hear suggestions and tips. I was thinking of using multiple databases to structure the data. The main database will store users data (email,pass,id,etc) admin/website settings. Than each client will have an unique database labeled prefix_userid, which carry tables holding their traffic, invoice, and support ticket data. Would this be a solution, and would it slow down or speed up overall performances (that is spreading the data over muliple databases). I have a solid VPS, but would like to safe and be as effient as possible.

• Empty interface to combine multiple interfaces

  Suppose you have two interfaces: interface Readable { public void read(); } interface Writable { public void write(); } In some cases the implementing objects can only support one of these but in a lot of cases the implementations will support both interfaces. The people who use the interfaces will have to do something like: // can't write to it without explicit casting Readable myObject = new MyObject(); // can't read from it without explicit casting Writable myObject = new MyObject(); // tight coupling to actual implementation MyObject myObject = new MyObject(); None of these options is terribly convenient, even more so when considering that you want this as a method parameter. One solution would be to declare a wrapping interface: interface TheWholeShabam extends Readable, Writable {} But this has one specific problem: all implementations that support both Readable and Writable have to implement TheWholeShabam if they want to be compatible with people using the interface. Even though it offers nothing apart from the guaranteed presence of both interfaces. Is there a clean solution to this problem or should I go for the wrapper interface? UPDATE It is in fact often necessary to have an object that is both readable and writable so simply seperating the concerns in the arguments is not always a clean solution. UPDATE2 (extracted as answer so it's easier to comment on) UPDATE3 Please beware that the primary usecase for this is not streams (although they too must be supported). Streams make a very specific distinction between input and output and there is a clear separation of responsibilities. Rather, think of something like a bytebuffer where you need one object you can write to and read from, one object that has a very specific state attached to it. • Is it bad to be the only person supporting software you have developed?

  My employer has a need for a web-based application to manage and share data within the department, with approximately 50-75 possible users. I feel I have the ability to write it for them. I would likely use Python/Django with a MySQL database, so it would be open source. However, I'm the only IT person in my department (our larger organization has a separate IT support staff with which I often work, but not for web development). I want to develop this application, but if I leave in 1-2 years, and someone else has to come in after me and support it, will this be seen as a bad decision? This is assuming all the obvious points -- I will write documentation, I will comment my code, and I will strive to follow good application design principles. But will that be enough? In principle, is it acceptable for one person to develop and support an entire web application? Is this a "do first, then show and ask" kind of situation, or should I be certain it will be adopted by everyone involved first?

• Extract large zip file (50G) on Mac OS X

  I was trying to move the files to another hard drive. So I archived all my photos in one large zip file using the Mac OS X built-in compress function. But the file failed to extract. I've tried many programs, but none of the programs I tried were able to extract the file. I've tried Mac OS X's extract utility, Stuffit Expander, 7zip (command line), all failed. Mac's archive utility and Stuffit don't seem to support large files, and 7zip's command line version gave an error stating unsupported archive. I have no luck in Windows too as many of my files have Chinese filenames, and couldn't extract to the correct name under Windows. Could anyone please suggest some programs that can support large files, can handle files compressed using Mac OS X's compress function, and can support UTF-8 filename? With or without GUI is fine.   Oracle's Secure Enterprise Search is part of PeopleSoft now.  It is provided as part of the Peopltools platform as an appliance, and is used with applications starting with release 9.2.  Secure Enterprise Search is a rich and powerful search product that can enhance search and navigation in PeopleSoft applications.  It also provides useful features like facets and filtering that are common in consumer search engines.Several questions have arisen about the deployment of SES and how to administer it and insure optimum performance.  People have also asked about what versions are supported on various platforms.  To address the most common of these questions, we are posting this list of tips.Platform SupportSES 11.1.2.2 does not support some of the platforms supported by PeopleTools, such as Windows 2012 and AIX 7.1. However, PeopleSoft and SES can use different operating system platforms when SES is deployed on a separate machine.SES 11.2.2.2 will have the required platform support for PT 8.53 in the future. We are planning to certify PT 8.53 once the testing is complete in 8.54 development and all platform support is released for 11.2.2.2.ArchitectureWe recommend running SES on a separate machine (from your apps) for two reasons:1.    SES bundles specific WebLogic, Java, and Oracle DB versions and might need different OS patches at a minimum than PeopleSoft. By having SES run on a different machine, these pre-requisites can be managed better through their lifecycle independenly for PeopleSoft and SES.2.    SES is resource intensive - it runs it's own WebLogic and Oracle database. • OS choice for functional developing

  I'm mainly a .NET developer so I normaly use Windows/VisualStudio (that means: I'm spoiled) but I'm enjoying Haskell and other (mostly functional) languagues in my spare time. Now for Haskell the windows-support is ok (you can get the Haskell-Platform) but latley I tried to get a basic Clojure/Scheme environment set up and it's just a pain on windows. So I'm thinking about trying out another OS for better tooling and languague support. Of course that leaves me with MacOS or some Linux distribution. I never used MacOS before and of course Linux would be cheaper (free) and I don't think I can parallel-boot MacOS on your normal PC-Hardware (can you?). PLUS: I don't have a clue about the tools you can use on those (to me) forign OSs. To make it short: I want to explore more Haskell, Clojure, Scala, Scheme and of course need at least good tooling for JavaScript/HTML5/Css. Support for .NET/Mono/F# would be great but for this I will still have my Win7 boot. So I like to know: - what is your prefered OS, Distribution (is Ubuntu viable?) - what Editor/IDE are you using Thank you for your help! PS: I'm not sure if this is the right place for this question but I surely hope so - if not please let me know where I should move this to (StackOverflow don't seem to be the right place IMHO)

• Trying to compile from source newest apache with newest openssl

  I need to install apache 2.4.10 using openssl 1.0.1i. If anyone knows how to fix the linker problem (or what I think is a linker problem), or knows of a better way to tell apache to use a newer openssl, it would be greatly appreciated; I've got apache 1.0.1i working otherwise.

• Full Access user removed from NTFS Share

  I don't know how it happened but for some reason one of the sub folders in the Network shares (call the share Market and the sub folder Support) no longer has any groups or users with full permissions on the share. The Market top level has users and groups with these permissions and everything is set up for folder inheritance but it's not inheriting permissions from the top level and only has modify permissions for the single group that is in the Access List for the sub folder Support. I can see items in the sub folder but I can not add, edit, or delete permissions to the Support folder. What are my options so I can once again manage permissions?

  I am currently running a dual display setup with nVidia 8800GTS video card, on a Ubuntu 12.10 box. The current setup uses nVidia TwinView to render the image on a 1920x1200 display and 1600x1200 one. I'm planning to add a third, 1280x1024 display to the setup. The change will require me to upgrade my GFX card to one supporting triple displays. I'll probably go with Sapphire Radeon 7770 (FLEX edition, to avoid additional active DP-DVI adapters). Before I invest in new GFX I wanted to ask - how well the AMD drivers will support such a setup. It does not matter whether it's fglrx or the OSS ones. If I remember correctly, when running Fedora on a Radeon x800, I had 'void' areas above and below the working area on my second display. The desktop was rendered in 1920+1280 width and 1200 height (which left 176px of vertical space accessible for my cursor and windows but not displayed on the screen - I'd prefer to avoid that). It may have very well been my misconfiguration back then. Generally, are there any solutions from AMD on par with TwinView? Or is it a non-issue at all? Also, I'm wondering about the usual stuff - hardware h264 decoding support, glitch-free flash support, any issues with Compiz/Unity?

• Languages with a clear distinction between subroutines that are purely functional, mutating, state-changing, etc?

  Lately I've become more and more frustrated that in most modern programming languages I've worked with (C/C++, C#, F#, Ruby, Python, JS and more) there is very little, if any, language support for determining what a subroutine will actually do. Consider the following simple pseudo-code: var x = DoSomethingWith(y); How do I determine what the call to DoSomethingWith(y) will actually do? Will it mutate y, or will it return a copy of y? Does it depend on global or local state, or is it only dependent on y? Will it change the global or local state? How does closure affect the outcome of the call? In all languages I've encountered, almost none of these questions can be answered by merely looking at the signature of the subroutine, and there is almost never any compile-time or run-time support either. Usually, the only way is to put your trust in the author of the API, and hope that the documentation and/or naming conventions reveal what the subroutine will actually do. My question is this: Does there exist any languages today that make symbolic distinctions between these types of scenarios, and places compile-time constraints on what code you can actually write? (There is of course some support for this in most modern languages, such as different levels of scope and closure, the separation between static and instance code, lambda functions, et cetera. But too often these seem to come into conflict with each other. For instance, a lambda function will usually either be purely functional, and simply return a value based on input parameters, or mutate the input parameters in some way. But it is usually possible to access static variables from a lambda function, which in turn can give you access to instance variables, and then it all breaks apart.)

• Intel site says VT-x is supported on my CPU, but tests say otherwise

  I have a laptop with an Intel 2nd Gen. i7-2729QM (http://ark.intel.com/products/50067/) and the Intel site says that it supports VT-x, but I've downloaded the Intel Processor Identification Utility (http://www.intel.com/support/processors/tools/piu/sb/CS-014921.htm) and the test says that my CPU does not have VT-x. There is no option in my BIOS that allows me to enable/disable VT-x. I researched my laptop model (SAGER NP8170) and most forums say that it's enabled by default and there's no option in the BIOS. So assuming that's true, what gives? I also downloaded another tool called SecurAble from GRC and it also says that my CPU doesn't support VT-x. VirtualBox also says that my CPU does not support virtualization. My mind is boggled by why it says on the Intel site that my CPU supports VT-x but all other tests show otherwise. Anyone know what's going on? Thanks in advance.

• Are webhosts that require NS instead of a CNAME common?

  I've just signed up with a webhost (which I prefer not to name) and I'm reasonably happy with it. The only nit was when I was ready to put a site online and I asked the support line to what name I should point my 'www' CNAME to. They responded that they don't do that and I need to set my domain's NS records for the hosting to work. "Why would you ever want to do it that way? Our service to you includes DNS and our servers are probably much better than the one your registrar provides." This was a bit of surprise as all of the other webhosts I've worked with happily support this. I've set up (eg) gallery.myfriend.example for friends by having them configure their DNS to CNAME 'gallery' to the name of a shared server at a webhost and the webhost does name-based hosting for 'gallery.myfriend.example'. (Of course, if the webhost ever tells me I'm being moved from A.webhost.example to B.webhost.example, it would be my responsibility to change where the CNAME points. Really good webhosts would instead create myname.webhost.example for the IP of whichever server my stuff happens to be on, so I'd never have to worry about keeping my CNAME up to date.) Is my impression correct, that most webhosts will happily support a service that begins with a CNAME hosted elsewhere, or is it really more common that webhosts will only provide a service if they control the DNS service too?

• Java SE 8 (with JavaFX) Developer Preview Release for ARM

  In an effort to get ARM developers testing Java SE 8 before the scheduled release later this year a Java SE 8 Developer Preview Release for ARM has been made available. This release has been tested on the Raspberry PI but should work on other ARM platforms. In addition to the new Java SE features, this release provides specific support of hard float GPU on the Raspberry PI. The support for hard float GPU has been anticipated by a number of developers. Additionally, this release includes support of an optimized JavaFX. Specific configurations of JDK 8 on ARM are defined below: Java FX is supported on ARM architecture v6/7 (hard float) Supported platforms without Java FX: ARM architecture v6/7 (hard float) ARM architecture v7 (VFP, little endian) ARM architecture v5 (soft float, little endian) Linux x86 The download page includes setup instructions for a Raspberry PI device as well as demos and samples. • Booting a GPT USB key on older BIOS laptop

  I have an old HP EliteBook 8530p, which does not support booting from GPT USB (GPT HDDs are fine though). Lately I had the wish to have a fast-to-start OS for browsing, smaller web tasks, etc., so I grabbed a ChromeOS build (latest one by ArnoldTheBat), flashed it on an 8GB flash drive, and popped it in. It did not boot, so I dug deeper and discovered that it actually is GPT, and cannot be converted to MBR. As my laptop does not support UEFI booting from USB (there's a really-really beta UEFI support in the BIOS, but as I said, it only supports GPT hard drives, not USB devices), I'm stuck. Is there any way of booting it, say, another flash drive with a specific boot loader/manager (e.g. Plop)?

• Using the Java SE 8 Date Time API with JPA 2.1

  Most of you are hopefully aware of the new Date Time API included in Java SE 8. If you are not, you should check them out right now using the Java Tutorial Trail dedicated to the topic. It is a significantly leap forward in processing temporal data in Java. For those who already use Joda-Time the changes will look very familiar - very simplistically speaking the Java SE 8 feature is basically Joda-Time standardized. Quite naturally you will likely want to use the new Date Time APIs in your JPA domain model to better represent temporal data. The problem is that JPA 2.1 will not support the new API out of the box. So what are you to do? Fortunately you can make use of fairly simple JPA 2.1 Type Converters to use the Date Time API in your JPA domain classes. Steven Gertiser shows you how to do it in an extremely well written blog entry. Besides explaining the problem and the solution the entry is actually very good for getting a better understanding of JPA 2.1 Type Converters as well. I think such a set of converters may be a good fit for Apache DeltaSpike as a Java EE 7 extension? In case you are wondering about Java SE 8 support in the JPA specification itself, Nick Williams has already entered an excellent, well researched JIRA entry asking for such support in a future version of the JPA specification that's well worth looking at. Another possibility of course is for JPA providers to start supporting the Date Time API natively before anything is formalized in the specification. What do you think?

  I heard that Ubuntu can boot up around 30sec, but I take more than 60sec every time my Ubuntu boot.
