  • Video memory buswidth vs video memory Bandwidth

    - by Mixxiphoid
My current video card (9600GT) is dying and I'm searching for a new video card. Between acquiring my current one and now, I got a lot more knowledge about hardware and I want to use that to pick my new card. So I decided to not just buy some popular card blindly, but to search for a card able to handle my hardware requirements. I searched the specs at the NVidia site for the GT640 and was confused by the memory section and some questions raised. My current card's memory bus width is 256bit and has 1GB of memory. I checked Google about the importance of bus width. And all the links basically said the same 'The higher the number the more potential simultaneously traffic can be transferred'. This was already clear to me, yet there are currently a lot of new cards which are considered better than my current one with a lower bus width. To go in more detail about my question I copied the memory info from the NVidia site: GT 640 GT640 GDDR5 Memory Specs: Memory Clock 1.8 Gbps 5.0 Gbps Standard Memory Config 2048 MB 1024 MB Memory Interface DDR3 GDDR5 Memory Interface Width 128-bit 64-bit Memory Bandwidth (GB/sec) 28.5 40.0 What puzzled me is that the Memory Bandwidth seems to me the most important part, yet the lower bus width has the higher 'performance'. Is this due to the fact the memory interface is GDDR5 and is therefore able to have a higher memory clock speed (5Gbps)? If I am to buy a new video card, should I check the bus width? Memory clock? Bandwith? Amount of memory? My current card ahs 1GB memory, so I was searching for a 2GB memory card, but now I'm not so sure any more whether that is really 'better'. My main question: To me it seems that memory performance is made up by the combination of bus width and frequency. Is this true? If yes, why are there so many sites telling me I need to get a card with a high bus width? If no, then what IS important when it goes about memory performance on a video card. NOTE: The memory bandwidth is (almost) never displayed on vendor sites. How can I determine which card is better without knowing the bandwith?

  • Replies to request coming over a relay goes to relay's internal IP, not to original request's source IP

Dhcpd running on Linux gets a dhcp request over dhcrelay which is running on other remote machine. Oct 6 10:09:46 2012 dhcpd: DHCPDISCOVER from 00:1e:68:06:eb:37 (oguz-U300) via 172.16.17.81 tcpdump: listening on eth1, link-type EN10MB (Ethernet), capture size 96 bytes 10:35:01.112500 IP (tos 0x0, ttl 64, id 0, offset 0, flags [DF], proto: UDP (17), length: 328) 192.168.0.81.67 > 192.168.0.1.67: BOOTP/DHCP, Request from 00:1e:68:06:eb:37, length: 300, hops:1, xid:0xe378fc7e, flags: [none] (0x0000) Gateway IP: 172.16.17.81 Client Ethernet Address: 00:1e:68:06:eb:37 [|bootp] It matches to a subnet and send reply. However reply does not go to the requesting dhcrelay external IP(192.168.0.81). Instead, it goes to the internal interface IP of machine running dhcrelay. And I think because of this remote machine running dhcrelay or the dhcrealy itself discarding packet. But this does not help ) Regards, -- Oguz YILMAZ UPDATE: The first problem is found. I have configured dhcrelay only on listening internel interface. It seems (of course) is should also listen to external interface for replies. It appears it is not important where the packet destined to. dhrelay will forward it to internal net. HOWEVER, I have deleted route on dhcpd server to reach 172.16.17.x subnet. It again tries to send reply to 172.16.17.81. Because it does not know the route it send it from default gateway to the internet. eth0: IP (tos 0x0, ttl 64, id 0, offset 0, flags [DF], proto: UDP (17), length: 328) 192.168.1.2.67 > 172.16.17.81.67: BOOTP/DHCP, Reply, length: 300, hops:1, xid:0x32830125, secs:3, flags: [none] (0x0000) eth0: Your IP: 172.16.17.11 eth0: Gateway IP: 172.16.17.81 eth0: Client Ethernet Address: 00:1e:68:06:eb:37 [|bootp] How can I force dhcpd to force to send replies to requesting IP? Because, it is not much meaningful to add routes to subnet we distribute IP for. Internet - dhcpd - 192.168.0.1 - SOMENET - 192.168.0.81 - dhcrelay - 172.16.17.0/24 192.168.0.1 has no route for 172.16.17.0 and has no interface directly attached to that net.

  • How can private IPV4 addresses get past iptables NAT (tcp RST,FIN)

    - by gscott
I've got a router performing simple NAT translation using iptables iptables -t nat -o -j MASQUERADE This works fine almost all of the time except for one particular case where some TCP RST and FIN packets are leaving the router un-NAT'd. In this scenario I setup 1 or 2 client computers streaming Flash video (eg www.nasa.gov/ntv) At the router I then tear down and re-establish the public interface (which is a modem) As expected the Flash streams stall out. After the connection is re-established and I try to refresh the Flash pages, I see some TCP RST and [FIN,ACK] packets leaving the public interface (I assume as Flash attempts to recover its stream). I don't know how these packets can leave the router non-NAT'd

  • External routing for local interfaces in a virtualized network

    - by Arkaitz Jimenez
Current setup: br0| |-- tun10 -pipe-tun0(192.240.240.1) |-- tun11 -pipe-tun1(192.240.240.2) |-- tun12 -pipe-tun2(192.240.240.3) The pipe program is a custom program that forwards data back2back between two tun interfaces. The idea is puting 2 programs in .2 and .3 while keeping .1 as the local interface in the current machine. The main problem is that I want to route packets to .2 and to .3 through .1 and br0, but as they are local interfaces, the kernel ignores any routing instruction, it just delivers the packet to the proper interface. Tried iptables, but the nat table doesn't even see ping packets to those ifaces. A "ping 192.240.240.2" delivers a icmp packet with source and dest .2 to tun1, ideally it should deliver a source .1 dest .2 at tun1 through tun0-br0-tun1 Any hint? Here the output of some commands: Output

  • VLC - How to restore GUI?

    - by rism
I was mucking around with VLC setting up an http interface and somehow I've managed to turn off the default GUI - which i believe is the Qt interface. So now when i start VLC i get the process showing up in TaskManager (Im on Win 7) but no GUI. How can i re-enable GUI without an uninstall|install? I don't want to do this because I want to keep mucking around with it and if i accidentally turn off the GUI again I don't want to have to go through some uninstall|reinstall loop. I thought it would just be a config file entry somewhere but do you think i can find it? The config file that is.

  • Aliased network interfaces and isc dhcp server

    - by Jonatan
I have been banging my head on this for a long time now. There are many discussions on the net about this and similar problems, but none of the solutions seems to work for me. I have a Debian server with two ethernet network interfaces. One of them is connected to internet, while the other is connected to my LAN. The LAN network is 10.11.100.0 (netmask 255.255.255.0). We have some custom hardware that use network 10.4.1.0 (netmask 255.255.255.0) and we can't change that. But we need all hosts on 10.11.100.0 to be able to connect to devices on 10.4.1.0. So I added an alias for the LAN network interface so that the Debian server acts as a gateway between 10.11.100.0 and 10.4.1.0. But then the dhcp server stopped working. The log says: No subnet declaration for eth1:0 (no IPv4 addresses). ** Ignoring requests on eth1:0. If this is not what you want, please write a subnet declaration in your dhcpd.conf file for the network segment to which interface eth1:1 is attached. ** No subnet declaration for eth1:1 (no IPv4 addresses). ** Ignoring requests on eth1:1. If this is not what you want, please write a subnet declaration in your dhcpd.conf file for the network segment to which interface eth1:1 is attached. ** I had another server before, also running Debian but with the older dhcp3 server, and it worked without any problems. I've tried everything I can think of in dhcpd.conf etc, and I've also compared with the working configuration in the old server. The dhcp server need only handle devices on 10.11.100.0. Any hints? Here's all relevant config files: /etc/default/isc-dhcp-server INTERFACES="eth1" /etc/network/interfaces (I've left out eth0, that connects to the Internet, since there is no problem with that.) auto eth1:0 iface eth1:0 inet static address 10.11.100.202 netmask 255.255.255.0 auto eth1:1 iface eth1:1 inet static address 10.4.1.248 netmask 255.255.255.0 /etc/dhcp/dhcpd.conf ddns-update-style none; option domain-name "???.com"; option domain-name-servers ?.?.?.?; default-lease-time 86400; max-lease-time 604800; authorative; subnet 10.11.100.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 { option subnet-mask 255.255.255.0; pool { range 10.11.100.50 10.11.100.99; } option routers 10.11.100.102; } I have tried to add shared-network etc, but didn't manage to get that to work. I get the same error message no matter what...

  • How should I set up my Hyper-V server and network topology?

    - by Daniel Waechter
This is my first time setting up either Hyper-V or Windows 2008, so please bear with me. I am setting up a pretty decent server running Windows Server 2008 R2 to be a remote (colocated) Hyper-V host. It will be hosting Linux and Windows VMs, initially for developers to use but eventually also to do some web hosting and other tasks. Currently I have two VMs, one Windows and one Ubuntu Linux, running pretty well, and I plan to clone them for future use. Right now I'm considering the best ways to configure developer and administrator access to the server once it is moved into the colocation facility, and I'm seeking advice on that. My thought is to set up a VPN for access to certain features of the VMs on the server, but I have a few different options for going about this: Connect the server to an existing hardware firewall (an old-ish Netscreen 5-GT) that can create a VPN and map external IPs to the VMs, which will have their own IPs exposed through the virtual interface. One problem with this choice is that I'm the only one trained on the Netscreen, and its interface is a bit baroque, so others may have difficulty maintaining it. Advantage is that I already know how to do it, and I know it will do what I need. Connect the server directly to the network and configure the Windows 2008 firewall to restrict access to the VMs and set up a VPN. I haven't done this before, so it will have a learning curve, but I'm willing to learn if this option is better long-term than the Netscreen. Another advantage is that I won't have to train anyone on the Netscreen interface. Still, I'm not certain if the capabilities of the Windows software firewall as far as creating VPNs, setting up rules for external access to certain ports on the IPs of Hyper-V servers, etc. Will it be sufficient for my needs and easy enough to set up / maintain? Anything else? What are the limitations of my approaches? What are the best practices / what has worked well for you? Remember that I need to set up developer access as well as consumer access to some services. Is a VPN even the right choice?

  • KVM Guest not reachable from host

    - by Paul
Hello, I'm running Ubuntu server 9.10, installed KVM etc. Created the bridge network following instructions on help.ubuntu.com/community/KVM/Networking Created a windows 2008 guest using virt-install command line (using virt-manager GUI from a remote Ubuntu desktop would not let me select the ISO location). I can however use a remote virt-manager to connect to the guest and complete the windows install. Within windows 2008 I changed the IP address but cannot ping from outside world. The bridge network appears fine - I'm not sure what else to look at! Here is the interfaces file: The loopback network interface auto lo iface lo inet loopback The primary network interface auto eth0 iface eth0 inet manual # auto br0 iface br0 inet static address 60.234.64.50 netmask 255.255.255.248 network 60.234.0.0 broadcast 60.234.0.255 gateway 60.234.64.49 bridge_ports eth0 bridge_stp off bridge_fd 0 bridge_maxwait 0 auto eth1 iface eth1 inet static address 192.168.12.2 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.12.255 The ip of the windows server is 60.234.64.52 What else should I check? • Is it possible to add files to the "Wordpress Media Library" using the command line?

    - by Tom
Wordpress has it's own "Media Library" which is used when you upload images and other media for use in blog posts and pages. The advantage of the media library is that it automatically produces thumbnails of the images and the web interface gives you extra info such as who uploaded the image, which articles use the image, etc. My question is, does anyone have any tips on interacting with the media library via the command line instead of using the Wordpress web interface? For example, any ideas on how to add a image to the media library from the command line? If I copy files to the media library directory (usually .../wp-content/uploads/YYYY/MM/) from the command line they do not show up in the Wordpress dashboard - I guess because there needs to be an associated database entry for the media to be registered with Wordpress.

  • dhclient configures /etc/resolv.conf with invalid entry

    - by kubal5003
I'm trying to figure out why running dhclient on my interface sets /etc/resolv conf to the ip number of my gateway(router). This entry is invalid and each and every time causes inability to resolve any address. I would like to: stop dhclient from overwriting the /etc/resolv.conf or make dhclient write there the valid dns ip from my router More on the environment: I'm using virtual Debian Wheezy as a client system on Windows Seven x64. It is run by Virtualbox with networking mode set to bridged (all packets from debian are injected to my network interface on windows). If I manually configure the /etc/resolv.conf then everything works fine. Doing this on every boot is quite annoying.. PS I know I can write a script to do it for me, but this is not the solution I want. //edit router ip: 192.168.1.100 /etc/resolv.conf AFTER running dhclient eth0: "nameserver 192.168.1.100" what I would like the /etc/resolv.conf to look like: "nameserver 89.202.xxxx" (I don't have to provide the real ip do I? )

  • Multicasting and multicast address

    - by Zia ur Rahman
I have confusion about the multicast addresses, I have read an example which is given by. Suppose two applications have been built to send audio over a network. One application accepts and digitizes an audio input stream, and then sends the resulting frame across the network to other application. The second application receives the digitized audio from the network, converts it back to the audio signal and plays the result over a speaker. Unless the two applications use broadcast to send frames, no other computers on the network will receive a copy of the frame. Multicasting provides an excellent solution to the problems of allowing some computers to participate in audio transmission. To use multicasting , a multicast address must be chosen for the audio application. And the receiving application passes the multicast address to the network interface. The interface begins to accept the packets sent to that address. Question: how this multicast address is chosen, how the receiving application knows that the sender using this specific destination address for the audio frames.

  • apcupsd on Linux does not report on APC BackUPS Pro 900

    - by lserni
From what documentation I could find, the UPS should be (is!) supported by Linux and ought to work with apcupsd. I looked for specific problems such as the infamous Microlink protocol, and found none. I have found a feedback from a guy in UK that reports using this very model on a not-too-different OS version (his OpenSuSE 12.1, mine 12.3 x86_64). • Routing a PPTP client and VMware Server instance running on the same box

    - by servermanfail
I have a Windows 2003 SBS box. It has 2 physical NIC's: WAN and LAN. The WAN is a public IP. The LAN is a simple 192.168.2.x subnet with Microsoft DHCP Server. Microsoft Routing and Remote Access Service is used to provide NAT to LAN. The box also runs VMware Server with a virtual machine running Windows XP. I want people to be able to VPN into the box, and connect to these virtual machines on the MSRDP port. I can VPN (PPTP) into the 2003 SBS box fine, as well as ping other machines on the LAN. I can ping the VM from a physical workstation on the LAN and vice-versa. I can ping the VPN client from the a physical workstation on the LAN and vice-versa. I can ping the VPN client from the Server console and vice-versa. I can ping the VM client from the Server console and vice-versa. But I cannot ping the VPN client from the VM and vice-versa. I was hoping to set up 2 or 3 Windows XP virtual machines on our only server, so that a couple of people can remote in to work without having to leave a physical machine on in the office. • OpenVPN stopped working, what could have happened?

    - by jaja
I have Openvpn, and it worked great when I used it on PC (Windows 8), then I copied all files (Certificates and config) to an Android 4 phone to use them. Now, Openvpn works on the phone, but not the PC. Specifically, when I open Google I get: The server at www.google.com can't be found, because the DNS lookup failed, but the VPN seems to be connected. I have a simple question, could the problem be because I copied the same files? • Is there any viable alternative to using a linux/unix/BSD firewall/router/vpn?

    - by ObligatoryMoniker
I am trying to purchase something to replace our Vyatta router that is running in a virtual machine on Hyper V (having the whole network go down when the host has to reboot is not convenient and I am getting the sense that this configuration may not be stable). Most posts on this topic suggest using Linux/OpenBSD/FreeBSD/etc with some recommendations to use appliances from vendors for specific purposes like firewall and VPN. We are a windows shop and it has been a stretch for us to make use of Vyatta but since it was free and straightforward to use we decided to use it. Now we need something that is easier for our team to (re)deploy and manage. I would rather purchase something windows based or an appliance that can do all of the following things: DHCP server (reservations, specified gateway, dns, etc) Static Routes that route traffic across three interfaces Easily Reproducible (Powershell script, Puppet, Chef, etc) Intuitive interface (Decent web interface would be fine but I don't want them to have to go to CLI) Does any one have any recommendations on what I should be looking at that might meet our needs?

  • iproute2 premptive route creation, i think....

    - by Bryan Hunt
Firstly: I know could do this the easy way with SSH but I want to learn how to route. I want to route packets back through the same tun0 interface from which they came into my system. I can do it for single routes. This works: sudo ip route add 74.52.23.120 metric 2 via 10.8.0.1 But i'd have to add them manually for each request that came down the pipe I've taken the blue pill and followed the http://lartc.org/howto/lartc.netfilter.html: Netfilter & iproute - marking packets tutorial But it's oriented towards redirecting OUTGOING packets based upon markers What I want is for a packet that comes in via tun0 not to be dropped which is what's happening right now, running scappy or suchlike to receive packets it doesn't seem to be receiving anything. Watching in wireshark I see the initial SYN packets coming in on the tun0 interface but that's as far as it gets without a static route as shown above. Am I nuts?

  • windows firewall and network location switch after establishing a vpn connection

    - by Konrads
I am looking for a reasonable solution for network location switching after VPN connection is established for Windows 7. The scenario is as follows: For location public (employee plugging in his laptop in hotel, public wi-fi,etc) all inbound connections are restricted, only outbound VPN + www is enabled. Employee then initiates a VPN connection, VPN pushes routes to 10.0.0.0/8 subnet Now I would like to have lax security rules for traffic from/to 10.0.0.0/8 that comes through the VPN interface, while still protecting the laptop from traffic that comes via uplink interface as if it was private. How to achieve this switching and duality? One option I see is switching to IPSec...

  • Sharepoint 2010 and Samba LDAP groups

    - by Jon Rhoades
The setup: Windows 2008 SP2 Sharepoint 2010 Foundation Samba 3 "Domain" I'm trying to use the Samba LDAP users & groups we already have to access to Sharepoint. I can successfully authenticate using the Samaba accounts (getting the "Error: Access Denied" message as the user has no permissions). So Sharepoint can clearly see and use the existing accounts/groups. What I can't do is be authorised as in the grant permissions interface, Sharepoint now fails to match the account (I get an "No Exact match found..."). Is there a way of getting the Sharepoint permissions interface to recognise and use our existing Samba LDAP accounts? I get it - don't use Samaba, use AD. If I had that option I would, but I don't.

  • Remote connection to dynamic public ip & private ip addresses

    - by user53864
Many times I connected to windows computer which has static public ip address via remote desktop over wan links. I'm wondering how could I connect to the remote computer that has dynamic public ip address & private ip addresses assigned. I've 2 systems at home: xp system-------connected to internet(dynamic public ip) & allowed other users to connected to the internet on the interface. windows vista system--------enabled dhcp on the interface to access internet from xp. How could I remotely connect from my office to the 'vista system'?. If I've a router/modem at my home it may be possible to allow the ports for the system but I don't. Any tips?

  • How to find ip address of my Asus RT-AC86U in Access Point mode?

    - by WilliamKF
I'm using an Asus wireless router model RT-AC68U and can connect fine to the internet using it wirelessly. I configured the router to be an Access Point, but having done so, I can no longer locate the GUI to adjust the router as I have no idea what its IP Address is anymore. The router is plugged into a cable modem and router which is a model SMCD3G is a business class gateway labeled Comcast Business IP Gateway. This gateway is assigning ip addresses in the range 10.1.10.XX and I went to the web interface at 10.1.10.1 and listed the connected devices and see my laptop which is connected to the Asus access point along with a few other devices, but none of the devices listed are the Asus router (I tried all the six ip addresses listed). How can I determine the IP Address of my Asus router in access point mode so I can see the GUI interface again to control the router other than by doing a factory reset?
