  Hey i am working upon a product as core developer which will be launched in USA market in few months if successful. Can this factor improve my chances for getting accepted into a PhD program at a top university (say top 20 in US)? Normally good universities like CMU, Standford, MIT, Cornell are more interested in student's profile like research work, undergraduate school, etc. I am now passed out from very good university it's ranked in top 20 of India only. Neither did I do research work till now. But being one of founding member of company and developing product for same, I want to know if this factor can help and to what extent.

Here is some good news – Instagram now officially allows you to embed public photos & videos on web through a simple IFrame snippet. When viewing an Instagram photo or video through the web interface, you can get embed snippet by clicking on the new “share” button . Here is a screen grab of new share button You can tweak the embed script to adjust height and width of the image but there are no options to remove link back to the Instagram website.   The first positive sign for the platform's developers is the fact that Microsoft made Silverlight 5's release candidate stage available at the beginning of this month. This points to an official final release in the near future. While Silverlight 5's upcoming release is good news, Microsoft put a damper on it when it recently debuted Windows 8 and noted that it would favor HTML5 instead.   Here is a big news to all the iPhone 5 users which brings great relief. Google officially released Google Maps Apps for iOS 6 and it’s available in App Store. The app is optimized for iPhone 5 and includes turn-by-turn voice guided navigation similar to the one found on Android devices. Also the app features transit and walking directions, 2D and 3D maps, Street View and aerial imagery, and more. If you don’t find the application on App Store, wait for sometime as the rollout may be slowly covering all the regions.

• How can I let prospective employers know I'm a great developer?

  I've recently read through Joel's guide to finding great developers (http://www.joelonsoftware.com/articles/FindingGreatDevelopers.html), and I feel really strongly that I am smart and get things done. The problem is, I didn't learn how to get things done until about halfway through college, so my GPA is less than stellar. Additionally, I've got a few other things going against me: late into the job market (~30), no internship, state college instead of university, and when I graduated, I pretty much had to take the first job that offered. With all of these things piled together, my resume (the first step to getting a job), is not terribly impressive. What can I do to let people know that I'm a great developer and would complement the best companies in the world?

• Windows Azure Tools for Microsoft Visual Studio 1.2 (June 2010)

  I have good news! Microsoft has released the June 2010 Windows Azure Tools + SDK. These new tools extend Visual Studio (both VS 2010 & VS 2008) for Windows Azure development. With these tools you can create, configure, debug, build, run, and deploy scalable web apps on Windows Azure. At first glance what I see as some of the most interesting points of interest are the fact that Visual Studio 2010 RTM is fully supported as well as .NET 4 support. You can choose to build your apps with the .NET 3.5 or .NET 4 frameworks. Another area of interest that I’ll be digging into is the cloud storage explorer. It provides a read-only view of your Windows Azure tables and blob containers from within Visual Studio via the Server Explorer. I’m sure I’ll have more to say about the Windows Azure Tools as I dig deeper… Have a day. :-|

• What's the best way of marketing to programmers?

  Disclaimer up front - I'm definitely not going to include any links in here - this question isn't part of my marketing! I've had a few projects recently where the end product is something that developers will use. In the past I've been on the receiving end of all sorts of marketing - as a developer I've gotten no end of junk - 1000s of pens, tee-shirts and mouse pads; enough CDs to keep my desk tea-free; some very useful USB keys with some logos I no longer recognise; a small forest's worth of leaflets; a bulging spam folder full of ignored emails, etc... So that's my question - What are good ways to market to developers? And as an aside - are developers the wrong people to target? - since we so often don't have a purchasing budget anyways!

  Does any body know why Ubuntu Software Center can not launch applications after installation ? All user install application only for one purpose - launch it and use. Why we need to install it and after that search it in number of menus. Even Packages are mixed with applications that why not just allow to launch only applications that put smth in menu. Example of such convenient application center - android market, ... . Ubuntu 11.10 have pretty/sexy center but .... vital function still missed.

• How easily recognized are new TLDs?

  I'm interested in purchasing a domain name for a new service I intend to market. I know that .com is instantly recognizable as a domain ending, and if I see stackoverflow.com I know it's a web address. However, I also recognize strings like github.io and mysite.tk as domains, since I've worked with domains like these. To the average member of the public, if one sees an address ending in .io or similar, non-mainstream TLD (e.g. on a billboard or business card) would they immediately know it's a URL and to type it into a browser? Or are these new domains only useful 1) for a technical audience or 2) when you will be primarily promoting your site through links and not print?

• Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1 Beta Released!

  Just thought I’d pass on the word that the Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1 Beta is now available to download. VS2010 SP1 Beta ships with a go live license which means you can start using it for production work though I’m not sure I’m going to be that brave until I check it out a bit first. Jason Zanders has a blog post outlining the new features/fixes included in the beta. Here are a couple BREAKING news items you’ll want to TakeNote of… VS2010 SP1 Beta BREAKS ASP.NET MVC 3 RC Razor IntelliSense. A new ASP.NET MVC 3 RC2 installer will be released very soon that will allow you to upgrade in-place. VS2010 SP1 Beta BREAKS the Visual Studio Async CTP. A work around is being worked on but for now if you’re working with the Async CTP then stick with VS2010 RTM. Have a day.

  we're trying to get rid of a this question : would it be possible to setup more than one value in a custom variable in Google Analytics, at page level ? Eg: _gaq.push(['_setCustomVar',3,'Tag','Custom Variables',3]); We'd like to track most popular tags on a web site who publishes news, articles and stuff. Contents are categorized (each content belongs to one category) and tagged (1 or more tags for each article). So, we'd like to apply this code: _gaq.push(['_setCustomVar',3,'Tag','Custom Variables',3]); _gaq.push(['_setCustomVar',3,'Tag','Google Analytics',3]); in a page that shows an article with these two tags assigned. Dean also committed to updating the preview approximately every eight weeks. There is a good article on Beta News covering some of the technical details of the release.
