  • MS Windows issue - "Filename or extension is too long"

    I run Microsoft windows on a few of my machines. I don't know if many people know about this issue in the OS but you can't have very long filenames, from what I know Linux can have longer names, I have never run into this issue on my Linux machines. Anyway I run into issues whenever copying folders & files to backup drives. I manually backup of my data, finding and changing names of files, this is very very tedious. Is there a software tool to shorten folders or filenames that are found to be to long on Windows? I have drive image duplication software which does the job but in a way that I don't like, plus moving files can become a hassle at times if the names are too long to copy.

  • How to force MS Word 2010 to split words anywhere

    I want Microsoft Word 2010 to force split words exactly where the line ends, even if it is "wrong and unreadable". Font is some monotype (Courier New). The text is in Text field which has fixed width. I found some option in Text field Format - Wrap lines inside. But it only disables / enables whole wrapping. The text will be printed over uniform spaced boxes, each for one letter (postal order). Examples: Current: some text with | looooooooooong word | What i want: some text with looooooo | oooong word | I tried to google it for an hour, but everybody wants the exact opposite (hard spaces etc..)

  • Outlook + Exchange 2007: it is possible to rid of local OST files?

    I am looking for a solution which would allow to use a convenience of Outlook as a mail client app while at the same time have no PST or OST files on a local computer. Even in 'non-caching' mode Outlook creates an OST file where it downloads everything from the Exchange server. OWA does not create any local files (except cookies I believe) but lacks some of the nice features Outlook has. Would it be feasible to place OST files on a network share? Maybe the solution exists for some other client+server pair?

  • MS Word 2007 Mail Merge fails on ZIP codes with leading Zeros (eg. 01234)

    I have an Excel Spreadsheet with a ZIP code column. For some dumb reason the original spreadsheet I got had all the zip codes stored as numbers, so a ZIP code like 01234 was stored as 1234. Easy to fix with "Format Column" as "Special = ZIP Code". All values like 1234, show up as 01234. Great! When I import it into Word via Mail Merge (to print address labels), the ZIP codes on all the addresses starting with a leading zero (like 01234) revert to their old form (1234). How do I fix this?

  • Conflicts with MS Office temporary files when using Offline Folders on Vista

    We are using Offline Folders feature of Windows Vista to make files on network shares available when out of office. Mostly it is working, but every time I do a sync I get a lot of such errors: D500E7B8.tmp - A file was deleted on this computer and changed on the server while this computer was offline. There are hundreds of them. I always select all of them and choose resolution "Delete from both locations". But what is causing this and how can I avoid it? I suspect the reason is that we are using Debian and Samba (3.4.7) on our file server. I've been looking for some Samba options that would cure this, but with no success. I learned that probably the cause is, that both Word and Excel are using specific pattern to change files - they never change the original file, but instead always write a new temporary file and rename it to original file, when you click Save.     How costly (CPU or memory wise) is it to have multiple instances of SQL server 2005 instead of only one instance with prefixed databases? A company have three application providers. They each will install one application and they each require two or three databases. Should they all use the same instance or should every provider use it's own named instance? Is there any strong reason for one or other setup?

Unfortunately we don't have previous database schema file for production database. Is there a way to export existing database schema as *.dbschema file, preferably from Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio (2008 R2)? This way we could run schema comparison and generate update script.

  • Linux program unable to access files in group

    I'm having trouble configuring things on linux so that a program can access certain files. Let's call it pgm A. It has uid uA and gid gA. In addition, uid uA is listed in /etc/group as a member of group gX. The problem is that pgm A cannot access files for which the uid is root and the gid is gX, but only when pgm A is called from another program, pgm B, which also runs as user uA. If I su as user uA and run pgm A from bash, it has no problem accessing files in group gX. But if another program, pgm B, which also runs as user uA, forks and execs pgm A, pgm A cannot access the files. I've verified that pgm A is indeed running as user uA, group gA, when launched from pgm B. So, if uA is a member of group gX, why can't the program access files which are readable by group gX? It's as if the operating system is ignoring the fact that user uA is also in group gX.

  • Script to mirror MS SQL Server databases between 2 servers

    Hi I have about 200 sites each of which have 2 servers running MSSQL (2k5 at some sites, 2k8 at others) One server is production and the other is primarily there as a backup. We're rebuilding all of these servers this year and as part of that we will have to set up mirroring for ... a lot ... of databases. Some of these sites have 45 databases so mirroring them manually is going to be a huge pain. I was going to write a batch script which uses SQLCMD to backup the database and log, copies to the secondary server, restores the backup and log with norecovery, creates the endpoints and sets the partner. This in itself isn't too complicated, but i'd love to see what other people have done as i'm not very confident in catching errors using the process i've outlined above. I've seen Tools to manage sql 2008 database mirroring? Which looks really good, but the formatting is jumbled and I can't get it to work. If anyone has any other scripts they've written and are willing to share I'd be eternally grateful. Ideally I'd love to be able to use a script to ensure there are matching endpoints (same ports) on both servers, backup the database, backup the log, copy the backups to second server, restore database and log with norecovery, set the partners on both servers, and somehow confirm that the databases are linked and synchronized.     I'm having trouble with my new server and accessing its directories. I updated my proftpd.conf with: DefaultRoot / No I'm able to see the root directory of my server. But, trying to access some directories gives different results. For example, I can access /vars but I can't access /home or /root How can I overcome this? This is what my ftp client says after trying to access /root: Server said: /root: No such file or directory Error -125: remote chdir failed This is what my ftp client says after trying to create a new directory in /: Server said: untitled folder: Permission denied Error -140: remote mkdir failed

  • Pre-load MS Windows right-click menus and Start menu at startup

    Hello brainy people. On my WinXP SP3 laptop (1.4Ghz 1.2GB ram), after I first log in, when I right-click in Windows Explorer and choose New, the submenu can take up to 15 seconds to load, which is a pain in the ass when you want to do a quick easy operation. After the submenu has loaded the first time, subsequent loads perform instantly, obviously as the menu has been cached. My question is: can these right-click menus (and the Start menu, which also takes some time to load the first time) be pre-loaded at Windows startup? Thanks.

    I'm not sure if this is possible, or if I'll have to do it manually, but I have lots of cells in the following format: =87.12+56.52-16.50+98.21-9.51 If possible, I'd like to break it up into columns, like so: I have a data in excel in the format: 87.12 | 56.52 | -16.50 | 98.21 | -9.51 I've tried text to columns based on the '+' symbol, but it falls short when I then try to break it down by the '-' symbol, it moves into columns as appropriate, it removes the minus from the start of the figure Any suggestions would be very welcome!   • Client cannot access my IIS7 web server

    I have a Windows 2008 web server on running IIS 7 with about 25 websites. One of those sites is an SaaS application that is accessed constantly throughout the day. However, one particular client keeps getting blocked from my server. They will be using the service, and then all of a sudden they cannot access the program, or any other site on the server. The entire office of 4 users is blocked from accessing anything on the web server. A trace route reveals they get all the way to the server before they are blocked. However, they can access a linux server that is a different VM with a different IP on the same physical server. Also, when they are blocked from their office, they can still access the site from their mobile phone or local Starbucks. They can also occasionally reset the router and gain access to the web server again as they are on a dynamic IP address. I checked IIS and allow all IPs to access the server. There is nothing in the logs the says anything about a user being banned. I really have no idea what is causing this? Could it be a virus on their end? I have even moved the SaaS to a completely new server in a different location, and they were working fine for about a month, and then the problem started occurring again. Are there any hidden blacklists in IIS? Or is it a routing issue on their end?

  • Cannot access folder locally, but can remotely

    I'm having a peculiar problem on one of my servers at the moment, which seems to be related to authentication in some way, but I have no idea how to find the root of the problem. I have a folder on the server D:\Somefolder\Logs. If I am connected to the server via an RDP terminal, so essentially "local", I cannot access that folder - I get an access denied. If I am connecting from my machine to it using the share \server\d$\Somefolder\Logs, I can access it. I'm logging in to both machines as the same user. Permissions on the folder seem quite simple, CREATOR OWNER, SYSTEM and Administrators. I am a Domain Admin, and they are in the local "Administrators" group. It is also affecting things like access to SQL Server, so I don't think it's a simple folder-permissions thing. For example, I cannot connect SQL Management Studio to all the local SQL instances using a domain account, but I can if I connect remotely to it.

    We're migrating an LAOP server to Win 2k8 IIS7 MSSQL and PHP (WIMP?) at work, and I'm using the opportunity to clean up the PHP. Currently it doesn't use PDO, and I'd like to rewrite the PHP to use that instead. Challenge is, I don't know much about MSSQL and PHP deployment on Windows. The official MSSQL PDO object is experimental / depreicated and recommends PDO-ODBC. Microsoft just announced a driver supporting PDO. Is there no other PDO driver? How does SQLSRV contrast with PDO-ODBC?

    Need to block access to certain website types without listing each URL to block. Students at secondary school are going to porn sites. Need to be able to block all such access without having to list each possible site URL. Having the Content -- Ratings tab set to None for all categories on the ratings files listed on my computers does not prevent access. Unchecking users may access sites with no rating, even with the security settings set to High, still allows the porn sites to come up. If that is checked, then ONLY listed sites can open and students would not be able to do any research via google, for example. I would rather not have to continue checking each computer and blocking sites as they find them.

  • How do you create a SQL query in Excel 2007 with a dynamic date range?

    I am trying to create a reporting spreadsheet that can print reports for a given time period. The query below works, but when I try to use a "?" parameter in place of the date, I get an error after selecting a cell containing my date. If I use single quotes ('?') I get a conversion from string to date/time failure, if I don't (?) I get a syntax error near @p1. Eventually I will need either a start and end date or a formula adding a month or shift to the starting date/time to filter the data down to important information. The query was built in Microsoft Query. SELECT FloatTable.DateAndTime, TagTable.TagName FROM master.dbo.FloatTable FloatTable, master.dbo.TagTable TagTable WHERE FloatTable.TagIndex = TagTable.TagIndex AND ((FloatTable.DateAndTime={ts '2012-06-01 00:00:00'})) Any assistance would be much appreciated.     I'm Confused from the fact that Vlan tagging is done at access port and trunk port always gets tagged packets (until its case of native vlan).But I still believe in other fact which says tagging happen only when a frame hit the trunk port which means trunk port gets untagged frame and tagging is not possible at access port. Would like to know where actually this tagging happens ? and also which command we can use to encapsulate 802.1q protocol to access port ? The way we do at trunk port is switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q Is the above command applicable for access mode also?

    I'm trying to set up our SVN server so that by default the group developers will have access to all repositories, but I want to override that setting on some certain repositories where I want to allow access only to single defined users (or separate groups) The current configuration is SVN + WebDAV on Apache2. All my repositories are located at /var/lib/svn/ In dav_svn.authz I currently have [/] @developers = rw @users = r Now I want to add one repository (let's call it secret_repo) that would only allow access to one user who is also a member of the developers group.¨ I tried to do [secret_repo:/] * = secret_user = rw Where secret_user is the user I'd like to give access to the repository, but it doesn't seem to work. Currently the server is using Apache's LDAP module to authenticate users from our active directory domain and I'd like to keep it that way if possible. Also I seem to be able to browse all my repos freely with any web browser, which I'd like to block. Second problem is that I have webSVN on the server, which is using Apache's LDAP authentication. Everyone who is a member of our domain can access it, so I'd like to hide this secret_repo from websvn listing. It's configured not with parentPath("/var/lib/svn");. Do I really need to remove that and add every repository separately, except the ones I want to hide?

  • windows 2003 server read only access

    Hi, I'm having a read only access problem. I have admin rights and can set the security for a folder to give me full access but when I switch the check box for read only off then exit out and open the properties back up it is checked. It is a grayed out check box if that helps. I just don't know how I have read/write access but can't switch off read only for a particular folder. Thanks
