• Best method to organize/manage dependencies in the VCS within a large solution

  A simple scenario: 2 projects are in version control The application The test(s) A significant number of checkins are made to the application daily. CI builds and runs all of the automation nightly. In order to write and/or run tests you need to have built the application (to reference/load instrumented assemblies). Now, consider the application to be massive, such that building it is prohibitive in time (an entire day to compile). The obvious side effect here, is that once you've performed a build locally, it is immediately inconsistent with latest. For instance: If I were to sync with latest, and open up one of the test projects, it would not locally build until I built the application. This is the same when syncing to another branch/build/tag. So, in order to even start working, I need to wait a day to build the application locally, so that the assemblies could be loaded - and then those assemblies wouldn't be latest. How do you organize the repository or (ideally) your development environment such that you can continually develop tests against whatever the current build is, or a given specific build, while minimizing building the application as much as possible?

• Apache returns the perl script source instead of execute the script when the request comes from chrome

  I've just finish to install awstats on my web server, and it runs fine using firefox. But when I try to open the awstats page with chrome, the perl source script is downloaded (instead of being executed). it seems the MIME requested by Chrome gave a different behavior compared to Chrome. Any idea ? • Web to Print system - which client side technology should I use

  I'm getting started to develop Web to Print system. My main concern is which client-side techology should I use: jQuery/CSS Flex/ActionScript or something else? For now, idea is that user/customer choose Product eg: Business card Attributes: Dimensions,Paper type, ... etc Template or blank Adjust product (editor) Preview & order Output should be PDF 300dpi. My main issue is: adding/adjusting text in editor. (font size, font family...). Because application should be cross browser. And I think that 10px Arial can't be the same in Firefox 5 and IE 8. It must be pixel perfect in every browser. If somebody order $100 of business cards, and text is different that he/she saw when ordering - that is a big problem. So, Flash platform should be the answer. But, as I see it's dying technology, 2012 is here - HTML5 is replacing Flash rapidly. I hope that you understand me, so every guideline or few smart words would be very appreciating.

• Do glue records in non-circular dns-lookups speed up domain resolution or not?

  Doing a lookup for my domain on http://www.intodns.com/ I noticed theese two messages: In Parent section: DNS Parent sent Glue The parent nameserver g.gtld-servers.net is not sending out GLUE for every nameservers listed, meaning he is sending out your nameservers host names without sending the A records of those nameservers. It's ok but you have to know that this will require an extra A lookup that can delay a little the connections to your site. This happens a lot if you have nameservers on different TLD (domain.com for example with nameserver ns.domain.org.) and in NS section: Glue for NS records INFO: GLUE was not sent when I asked your nameservers for your NS records.This is ok but you should know that in this case an extra A record lookup is required in order to get the IPs of your NS records. The nameservers without glue are: 109.230.225.96 84.201.40.52 You can fix this for example by adding A records to your nameservers for the zones listed above. I do perfectly understand that the primary objective of glue records is to resolve circular dependencies. The classic use case: my domain is example.com and I want to have the nameserver ns1.example.com. This will never work because i cannot know the ip of ns1.example.com if I don't fetch example.com and in order to do that I need to fetch it from ns1.example.com. To resolve this deadlock I add a glue record to ns1.example.com containing the ip adress of the nameserver, so this can work out. So this problem does not occour if the nameservers are in a different TLD than the domain i want to look up. But however to fetch the zone information from the nameservers I need to know their ip adress right? And in order to know that i need to fetch the zone the nameservers are in from their respective nameservers, right? (or rather my ISP needs to do that in the background) So an extra lookup that takes time? If I now have glue records, I know the IP adress right away without the need to look it up - so this should speed up the resolution of my domain, shouldnt it? However my DNS zone provider (tecserver.at) replied that this would make no sense because "we are not running ns1.ourdomain.com an ns1.ourdomain.com as authorative NS for ourdomain.com. This would be the only sense for glue records. Tecserver has a glue record because the NS for tecserver.at are ns1.tecserver.at and ns2.tecserver.at. Therefore a glue record is needed for resolution.

• Sitemap structure for network of subdomains

  I am working on a project that's a network of 2 domains (domain.gr & domain.com.cy) of subdomains similar to Hubpages [each user gets a profile under a different subdomain & there is a personal blog for that user as well] and I think there is something wrong with our sitemap submission. Sometimes it takes weeks in order a new profiles to get indexed. We make use of one Webmasters account in order to manage all network and we don't want to create different accounts for each subdomain since there are more than 1000 already. According to this post http://goo.gl/KjMCjN, I end up on a structure of 5 sitemaps with the following structure : 1st sitemap will be for indexing the others. 2nd sitemap for all users profile under the domain.gr 3nd sitemap for all users profile under the domain.com.cy 4th sitemap for all posts under the *.domain.gr - news sitemap http://goo.gl/8A8S9f 5th sitemap for all posts under the *.domain.com.cy - news sitemap again Now my questions: Should we create news sitemaps or just list all post in 2nd & 3rd sitemap? Does links ordering has anything to do? Eg: Most recent user created be first in sitemap or doesn't make any different and we just need to make sure that lastmod date is correct? Does anyone guess how Hubpages submit their sitemap in Webmasters so maybe we could follow there way? Any alternative or better way to index this kind of schema? PS: Our network is multi language - Greek & English are available. We make use of hreflang tags on the head of each page to separate country target of each version.

• Windows Server 2008 Active Directory DNS setup

  I have to setup a small windows network inside my bigger linux/mac infrastructure. In order to get the windows clients logging onto the domain, I have had to make the DC their primary DNS server, which seems to have worked. I would much prefer to have one DNS server running on my network, or at least one authoritative server running on the network. I have a USG 200 router/firewall and I can configure some static records for DNS, but I an not sure what I need to put in order to get DNS and AD working together, and hints and tips appreciated.

• Drinking Our Own Champagne: Fusion Accounting Hub at Oracle

  A guest post by Corey West, Senior Vice President, Oracle's Corporate Controller and Chief Accounting Officer There's no better story to tell than one about Oracle using its own products with blowout success. Here's how this one goes. As you know, Oracle has increased its share of the software market through a number of high-profile acquisitions. Legally combining companies is a very complicated process -- it can take months to complete, especially for the acquisitions with offices in several countries, each with its own unique laws and regulations. It's a mission critical and time sensitive process to roll an acquired company's legacy systems (running vital operations, such as accounts receivable and general ledger (GL)) into the existing systems at Oracle. To date, we've run our primary financial ledgers in E-Business Suite R12 -- and we've successfully met the requirements of the business and closed the books on time every single quarter. But there's always room for improvement and that comes in the form of Fusion Applications. We are now live on Fusion Accounting Hub (FAH), which is the first critical step in moving to a full Fusion Financials instance. We started with FAH so that we could design a global chart of accounts. Eventually, every transaction in every country will originate from this global chart of accounts -- it becomes the structure for managing our business more uniformly. In conjunction, we're using Oracle Hyperion Data Relationship Management (DRM) to centralize and automate governance of our global chart of accounts and related hierarchies, which will help us lower our costs and greatly reduce risk. Each month, we have to consolidate data from our primary general ledgers. We have been able to simplify this process considerably using FAH. We can now submit our primary ledgers running in E-Business Suite (EBS) R12 directly to FAH, eliminating the need for more than 90 redundant consolidation ledgers. Also we can submit incrementally, so if we need to book an adjustment in a primary ledger after close, we can do so without re-opening it and re-submitting. As a result, we have earlier visibility to period-end actuals during the close. A goal of this implementation, and one that we successfully achieved, is that we are able to use FAH globally with no customization. This means we have the ability to fully deploy ledger sets at the consolidation level, plus we can use standard functionality for currency translation and mass allocations. We're able to use account monitoring and drill down functionality from the consolidation level all the way through to EBS primary ledgers and sub-ledgers, which allows someone to click through a transaction appearing at the consolidation level clear through to its original source, a significant productivity enhancement when doing research. We also see a significant improvement in reporting using Essbase cube and Hyperion Smart View. Specifically, "the addition of an Essbase cube on top of the GL gives us tremendous versatility to automate and speed our elimination process," says Claire Sebti, Senior Director of Corporate Accounting at Oracle. A highlight of this story is that FAH is running in a co-existence environment. Our plan is to move to Fusion Financials in steps, starting with FAH. Next, our Oracle Financial Services Software subsidiary will move to a full Fusion Financials instance. Then we'll replace our EBS instance with Fusion Financials. This approach allows us to plan in steps, learn as we go, and not overwhelm our teams. It also reduces the risk that comes with moving the entire instance at once. Maria Smith, Vice President of Global Controller Operations, is confident about how they've positioned themselves to uptake more Fusion functionality and is eager to "continue to drive additional efficiency and cost savings." In this story, the happy customers are Oracle controllers, financial analysts, accounting specialists, and our management team that get earlier access to more flexible reporting. "Fusion Accounting Hub simplifies our processes and gives us more transparency into account activity," raves Alex SanJuan, Senior Director, Record to Report Strategic Process Owner. Overall, the team has been very impressed with the usability and functionality of FAH and are pleased with the quantifiable improvements. Claire Sebti states, "Our WD5 close activities have been reduced by at least four hours of system processing time, just for the consolidation group." Fusion Accounting Hub is an inspiring beginning to our Fusion Financials implementation story. There's no doubt it's going to be an international bestseller! • Just Another Web Service (JAWS) vs SOA

  Over the last few years SOA has been a hot topic lending it to be abused by many that have no understanding of the concept. In my opinion, one of the largest issues facing SOA is the lack of understanding and experience implementing SOA by business and IT alike. I just recently deployed a new web services that is called by multiple service clients. Would you call this SOA because it is a web service that can be called by any requesting client? In my opinion, this is not SOA; instead it is Just Another Web Service (JAWS).  Just because a company creates a web service does not mean that they are using SOA, in fact it only means that they are using a web service. SOA is an architectural style that focuses on the design of systems based on the consumer and providers thorough the use of contracts.  With this approach SOA needs to be applied for the top down in order for it to reach its full potential. In the case of the web service, the service is just a small part of the entire system that is reusable and has the flexibility to change. In order for a company in this case to move towards SOA then they need to define business processes that can be shared through the use of reusable software and loose coupling. Once the company’s thought and development process change to address changes in this manner they can start to become more SOA.

• Windows Swap (Page File): Enable or Disable?

  From my personal experience I've noticed that disabling the page file in Windows XP has given me, in general, the most speed gain out of any other software change I can make. Obviously this has to be done when a significant amount of RAM is available. Typically I find that it works nicely with +2GB of RAM. The only issues I've ever really had were loading up Adobe Photoshop. Is this really a speed improvement or am I imagining it? Note: In order to actually turn it off, you must not just set it to 0MB, but disable it. Otherwise Windows will just expand it when it needs to in order to meet its needs.

  Hi I'm currently working on setting up a VirtualHost on Amazon EC2 for accessing phpmyadmin so i can access it with test.example.com as oppose to it being widely available as it's default example.com/phpmyadmin. • Hotspotting - tying Visualization into Other applications

  AutoVue 20 included our first step towards providing a rich hotspotting capability that will allow visualization capabilities to be very tightly integrated into a wide range of applications. The idea is to have a close link between the visual representation of an object or place, and the business objects associated with that object or place. We've been working with our partner Enigma to enable this capability in their parts catalogue - the screenshot above shows what it looks like - the image on the right is a trimmed down version of AutoVue displaying a drawing of the various parts in an interactive way - when you click on item '6' in the AutoVue drawing, the appropriate item is highlighted in the parts catalogue - making it easy to select the parts you need, and to ensure that the correct parts are selected. The integration works in both directions - when you select a part in the part catalogue, the appropriate part is highlighted in the drawing as well. To get slightly technical for a moment, this is a simple javascript integration - the external application provides a javascript callback that AutoVue calls whenever an item is clicked on, and AutoVue provides a javascript function to call when an item is selected in the external application. There are also direct java APIs available. This makes it easy to tie AutoVue into many types of applications - you can imagine in an asset lifecycle management application being able to click on the appropriate asset in a drawing to create a work-order, instead of finding the right asset ID to enter. Or being able to click on a part or sub-assembly to trigger a change order in a product lifecycle management application. We're pretty excited about the possibilities that this capability opens up, and plan on expanding on it a lot in the future. Would this be useful in your enterprise applications?   A few days ago I published a new article on DAX Patterns web site describing how to implement Basket Analysis in DAX. This topic is a very classical one and is also covered in the many-to-many revolution white paper. It has been also discussed in several blog posts, listed here in historical order: Simple Basket Analysis in DAX by Chris Webb PowerPivot, basket analysis and the hidden many to many by Alberto Ferrari Applied Basket Analysis in Power Pivot using DAX by Gerhard Brueckl As usual, in DAX Patterns we try to present the required DAX formulas in a way that is easy to adapt to specific models. We also try to show a good implementation from a performance point of view. Further optimizations are always possible in DAX. However, in order to keep the model simple to adapt in different scenarios, we avoid presenting optimizations that would require particular assumptions or restrictions on the data model. I hope you will find the Basket Analysis pattern useful. Even if you do not need it today, reading the DAX formula is a good exercise to check your knowledge of evaluation contexts in DAX. For example, describing how does it work the following expression is not a trivial task! • Will I need a dedicated static IP or a unique IP is enough to SSL enable my website?

  Hi, This is the first time I am dealing with SSL and Dedicated Static IP /Unique IP. Now this webhost says that they will provide Unique IP (not shared with other customers) but do NOT guarantee that it will be static. Now I plan to make my website SSL enabled and install a SSL certificate. So in order to SSL enable my website, will I really need a Dedicated Static IP or will this Unique IP (without the guarantee that it will be static) be enough? What problems will I need to face if the IP is not static? I have already bought hosting from them. And they showed me that option while adding optional services to the account (after I placed my order), so I did not even have a clue about this. Thank you all in advance.

• Magento 1.6.2 Catalog Price Rule Problem

  My Magento system seems to have a slight issue with Catalog Price Rule application. As far as the customer is concerned, all is working perfectly. The problem is that some orders are not being displayed properly in the admin system when I look at the details. The Catalog Price rule appears to not be applied - so when we reconcile our card processor details with those in our backend Sage system, numbers are not tallying up. Magento and out Sage system say the customer paid X, but the card issuer has taken payment of Y. The payment amount is correct due to the Catalog Price Rule. The customer is always paying the correct amount, but because of some issue with Magento, I think the data is possibly not being stored correctly (stored without the catalog price rule discount amount applied). This means that when I look at an order in the admin system, the line item prices that should be affected by the catalog price rule are not - but also the prices in our backend Sage system are incorrect too. We use another piece of software to bring the data into Sage from Magento, so the data must be stored in Magento's database incorrectly somewhere as this software reads out the order information from Magento. Does anyone have any idea what is wrong here, and how it might be fixed? Cheers!

• Too much I/O in the morning ?

  Interesting little improvement on a SQL 2005 system I encountered recently….. Some background - this system had a fairly ‘traditional OLTP’ workload ie  heavily used during day – till around 9pm, then had a batch window for several hours, then not much activity in the early hours of the day, until normal workload resumed the following morning. Using perfmon, I noticed that every morning, we would see a big spike in SQL Server I/O when the application started to be used... As it was 2005 I decided to look at what tables were in cache before and after the overnight batch processing ran… ( using DMV equivalent of dbcc memusage that I posted earlier). Here’s what I saw :-     So, contents of data cache split fairly evenly between my 'important/heavily used' tables.   After this:- some application batch processing,backups, DBCC checks and reindexes were run.  A fairly standard batch I'd suggest. Cache contents then looked like this :- Hmmmm – most of cache is now being used by a table I’ve described as ‘unimportant’. Why ? Well, that table was the last to be reindexed…. purely due to luck, as  the reindexing stored procedure performing a loop in alphabetical order through all application tables...  When the application starts to be used again – all this ‘unimportant’ data has to be replaced in cache by data that is heavily used… So, we changed the overnight reindex scripts –  the most heavily accessed tables are now the last to be reindexed. Obvious really, but we did see a significant reduction in early-morning I/O after changing the order of our reindexing.

• Subscription based eCommerce Site selling Physical Goods

  I want to implement a system where customers can buy physical products as subscription with recurring billing. Customers will come to my site, visit product page and buy stuff. They need to register an account before purchasing. After registration they will be forwarded to payment processor for payment and after successful payment they will be returned back to my site. Requirement: I dont want to use Paypal as a payment processor. It will be recurring payment on monthly, quarterly, bi-annual or annual basis. Customers can login to my site in order to view their Order History, Profile Management and can edit their Billing and/or Shipping details. Customers can cancel their Subscription any time after login to their account on my site. Plan: Currently I am using wordpress with WooCommerce plugin for eCommerce functionality. I am planning to use Amazon as a payment processor. I have searched WooCommerce Extension Drectory and found WC Subscription extension that can be used for my site. But I just confirmed from the Support WC Subscription only support recurring payment with Paypal and Stripe, no other payment processor is supported at the moment. Questions: According to my need, what will be the best solution? I am open to switch the platform from Wordpress to something else that can fulfill my requirement.

I have the folder part working perfectly and the deny from all rule is working as well - but my attempt to allow access to index.php is failing. Basically could someone tell me how to get it working?

• Does Apache2 Configured as ReverseProxy Hide Cookies Set by Backend Servers?

  I use Apache 2.2.16 as Reverse Proxy. For a static website, I don't have any issues. However, when began to use cookies, I've noticed that cookies are not being sent to the client. Here's a snippet of my config: <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName app.somewhere.com:80 ServerAlias app ProxyRequests Off ProxyPreserveHost On <Proxy *> Order deny,allow Allow from all </Proxy> ProxyPass /app http://10.x.x.x/app ProxyPassReverse /app http://10.x.x.x/app <Location /> Order allow,deny Allow from all </Location> </VirtualHost> But when I try to access the app server directly, I receive the cookies ok. Is this an expected behaviour for Apache2? I'm using HAProxy for another application that sends cookies to the client and I get all of them.

• Bring OS X Error Message window to the front

  In OS X, when an application crashes, a window with an error report will appear. That window is by default unreachable by Command+Tab nor does it appear in the Dock. Of course, if by error or on purpose one clicks another window, the error report will go to the background and hide behind the other windows. This is really annoying, because in order to see it, I will have to use Exposé and scan through 20+ Windows in order to find it. (Not to say, that I don’t like Exposé anymore since Snow Leopard made the window sizes all confusingly equal.) Any ideas on how to make the error reports Command+Tabbable?

• How to create single integer index value based on two integers where first is unlimited?

  I have table data containing an integer value X ranging from 1.... unknown, and an integer value Y ranging from 1..9 The data need to be presented in order 'X then Y'. For one visual component I can set multiple index names: X;Y But for another component I need a one-dimensional integer value as index (sort order). If X were limited to an upper bound of say 100, the one-dimensional value could simply be X*100 + Y. If the one-dimensional value could have been a real, it could be X + Y/10. But if I want to keep X unlimited, is there a way to calculate a single integer 'indexing' value from X and Y? [Added] Background information: I have a Gantt/TreeList component where the tasks are ordered on a TaskIndex integer. This does not need to be a real database field, I can make it a calculated field in the underlying client dataset. My table data is e.g. as follows: ID Baseline ParentID 1 0 0 (task) 5 2 1 (baseline) 8 1 1 (baseline) 9 0 0 (task) 12 0 0 (task) 16 1 12 (baseline) Task 1 has two baselines numbered 1 and 2 (IDs 8 and 5) Task 9 has no baselines Task 12 has one baseline numbered 1 (ID 16) Baselines number 1-9 (the Y variable from my question); 0 or null identify the tasks ID's are unlimited (the X variable) The user plays with visibility of baselines, e.g. he wants to see all tasks with all baselines labeled 1. This is done by updating a filter on the table. Right now I constantly have to recalculate TaskIndex after changing the filter (looping through records). It would be nice if TaskIndex could be calculated on the fly for each record knowing only the data in the current record (I work in Delphi where a client dataset has an OnCalcFields event handler, that is triggered for each record when necessary). I have no control over the inner workings of the visual component.
