  • Search sort by parameter match count in the query? PostgreSQL

    - by Ben Dauphinee
I am working on a search query in PostgreSQL, and one of the things I do is sort my query results by the number of parameters matched. I have no clue how this can be done. Does anyone have a suggestion or solution? Table brand color type engine Ford Blue 4-door V8 Maserati Blue 2-door V12 Saturn Green 4-door V8 GM Yellow 1-door V4 Current Query SELECT brand FROM table WHERE color = 'Blue' or type = '4-door' or engine = 'V8' Result Should Be Ford (3 match) Saturn (2 match) Maserati (1 match)

  • psql: FATAL: could not write init file

    - by Leonardo M. Ramé
as the title points out, I'm getting this error when trying to connect to a PostgreSql database from command line, using PostgreSQL. The client machine is an Ubuntu 11.10 x86_64 and the PostgreSQL libraries are from Version 9.1 Server is PostgreSql 8.3. This is the command that I executed: psql -U postgres -d my_database -h 192.168.0.161 -p 5432 -c "select * from xxyy" I get the same results when I use sudo or su postgres. The sad thing is that I can connect without problems using pgAdmin. Any hint?

  • Unable to connect to Postgres on Vagrant Box - Connection refused

    - by Ben Miller
First off, I'm new to Vagrant and Postgres. I created my Vagrant instance using http://files.vagrantup.com/lucid32.box with out any trouble. I am able to run vagrant up and vagrant ssh with out issue. I followed the instructions http://blog.crowdint.com/2011/08/11/postgresql-in-vagrant.html with one minor alteration. I installed "postgresql-8.4-postgis" package instead of "postgresql postgresql-contrib" I started the server using: postgres@lucid32:/home/vagrant$ /etc/init.d/postgresql-8.4 start While connected to the vagrant instance I can use psql to connect to the instance with out issue. In my Vagrantfile I had already added: config.vm.forward_port 5432, 5432 but when I try to run psql from localhost I get: psql: could not connect to server: Connection refused Is the server running locally and accepting connections on Unix domain socket "/tmp/.s.PGSQL.5432"? I'm sure I am missing something simple. Any ideas? Update: I found a reference to an issue like this and the article suggested using: psql -U postgres -h localhost with that I get: psql: server closed the connection unexpectedly This probably means the server terminated abnormally before or while processing the request.

  • How does SELinux affect the /home directory?

    - by Matt Solnit
Hi everyone. I'm migrating a CentOS 5.3 system from MySQL to PostgreSQL. The way our machine is set up is that the biggest disk partition is mounted to /home. This is out of my control and is managed by the hosting provider. Anyway, we obviously want the database files to be on /home for this reason. With MySQL, we did the following: Edited my.cnf and changed the datadir setting to /home/mysql Added a new "File type" policy record (I hope I'm using the right terminology) to set /home/mysql(/.*)? to mysqld_db_t Ran restorecon -R /home/mysql to assign the labels and everything was good. With PostgreSQL, however, I did the following: Edited /etc/init.d/postgresql and changed the PGDATA and PGLOG variables to /home/pgsql/data and /home/pgsql/pgstartup.log, respectively Added a new policy record to set /home/pgsql/pgstartup.log to postgresql_log_t Added a new policy record to set /home/pgsql/data(/.*)? to postgresql_db_t Ran restorecon -R /home/pgsql to assign the labels At this point, I still cannot start PostgreSQL. pgstartup.log says: # cat pgstartup.log postmaster cannot access the server configuration file "/home/pgsql/data/postgresql.conf": Permission denied The weird thing is that I don't see any messages related to this in /var/log/messages or /var/log/secure, but if I turn off SElinux, then everything works. I made sure all the permissions are correct (600 for files and 700 for directories), as well as the ownership (postgres:postgres). Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong? I'm using the Yum repository from commandprompt.com, version 8.3.7. EDIT: The reason my question specifically mentions the /home directory is that if I go through all these steps for any other directory, e.g. /var/lib/pgsql2 or /usr/local/pgsql, then it works as expected.

  • Can't Login to phpPgAdmin

    - by Devin
I'm trying to set up phpPgAdmin on my test machine so that I can interface with PostgreSQL without always having to use the psql CLI. I have PostgreSQL 9.1 installed via the RPM repository, while I installed phpPgAdmin 5.0.4 "manually" (by extracting the archive from the phpPgAdmin website). For the record, my host OS is CentOS 6.2. I made the following configuration changes already: PostgreSQL Inside pg_hba.conf, I changed all METHODs to md5. I gave the postgres account a password I added a new account named webuser with a password (note that I did not do anything else to the account, so I can't exactly say that I know what permissions it has and all) phpPgAdmin config.inc.php Changed the line $conf['servers'][0]['host'] = ''; to $conf['servers'][0]['host'] = '127.0.0.1'; (I've also tried using localhost as the value there). Set $conf['extra_login_security'] to false. Whenever I try to log in to phpPgAdmin, I get "Login failed", even if I use successful credentials (ones that work in psql). I've tried to go through some of the steps noted in Question 3 in the FAQ, but it hasn't worked out well so far there. It likely does not help that this is my first day working with PostgreSQL. I'm farily familiar with MySQL, but I have to use PostgreSQL for the project I'm working on. Could anyone offer some help for how to set up phpPgAdmin on CentOS 6.2? If I've done something terribly wrong in my configuration so far, it's no big deal to blow something/everything away, as it's not like I've stored any data there yet! I appreciate any insight you may have!

  • I get a "could not create lock file" error when trying to run Postgres

    - by zermy
I recently had to replace my postgresql.conf file, and I thought I got the settings right, but when I try to run Postgresql, I get this error: ESTFATAL: could not create lock file "/var/run/postgresql/.s.PGSQL.5432.lock": No such file or directory My workaround is to go as root and create a folder called postgresql in /var/run and then change the owner of the folder to postgres. The biggest problem is that I need to do this every single time my computer starts, the folder somehow deletes itself. I tried commenting out the external pid file bit in the conf file, but that didn't change anything.

  • A Reusable Builder Class for Ruby Testing

    - by Liam McLennan
My last post was about a class for building test data objects in C#. This post describes the same tool, but implemented in Ruby. The C# version was written first but I originally came up with the solution in my head using Ruby, and then I translated it to C#. The Ruby version was easier to write and is easier to use thanks to Ruby’s dynamic nature making generics unnecessary.  Here are my example domain classes: class Person attr_accessor :name, :age def initialize(name, age) @name = name @age = age end end class Property attr_accessor :street, :manager def initialize(street, manager) @street = street @manager = manager end end and the test class showing what the builder does: class Test_Builder < Test::Unit::TestCase def setup @build = Builder.new @build.configure({ Property => lambda { Property.new '127 Creek St', @build.a(Person) }, Person => lambda { Person.new 'Liam', 26 } }) end def test_create assert_not_nil @build end def test_can_get_a_person @person = @build.a(Person) assert_not_nil @person assert_equal 'Liam', @person.name assert_equal 26, @person.age end def test_can_get_a_modified_person @person = @build.a Person do |person| person.age = 999 end assert_not_nil @person assert_equal 'Liam', @person.name assert_equal 999, @person.age end def test_can_get_a_different_type_that_depends_on_a_type_that_has_not_been_configured_yet @my_place = @build.a(Property) assert_not_nil @my_place assert_equal '127 Creek St', @my_place.street assert_equal @build.a(Person).name, @my_place.manager.name end end Finally, the implementation of Builder: class Builder # defaults is a hash of Class => creation lambda def configure defaults @defaults = defaults end def a(klass) temp = @defaults[klass].call() yield temp if block_given? temp end end

  • (PHP vs Python vs Perl) vs Ruby [closed]

    - by Dr.Kameleon
OK, here's what : I've programmed in over 20 different languages and now, because of a large project I'm currently working on for Mac OS X (in Objective-C/Cocoa), I need to make a final decision on which language to use for my background scripting + plugin functionality. Definitely, one factor that'll ultimately influence my decision is which one I'm most familiar with, which is PHP (one of the ugliest languages around, which I however adore... lol), then Python / Perl (the "proven values"... )... and then Ruby (which, to me, is almost confusing and I've only played with it for some time.) Now, here's my considerations : (As previously mentioned) Being familiar with it (anyway, if X is better in my case, I really don't mind studying it from scratch...) Speed Good interaction with the Shell + ease of integration with my Cocoa application Btw, some of the reasons that made me wonder if Ruby would be a good choice is : The hype around it (although, I still don't get why; but that's probably just me...) My major competitor (we're actually talking about the same type of software here) is using Ruby for its backend scripting almost exclusively (ok, along with some BASH). Isn't Ruby considered slower e.g. than Perl? Why did he choose that? Simply, a matter of personal taste? So... your thoughts?

  • When to use Bash, when Python/Perl/Ruby? [closed]

    - by futlib
What's your rationale for when to write a Bash script and when to use a more powerful scripting language (Python, Perl, Ruby, ...)? I'm finding that very simple scripts are nicer with Bash, but many of those get quite fancy over time, and it never seems like a good idea to rewrite the whole thing. That's why I'm leaning towards always using Python for all scripting. But since Bash seems to be the the lingua franca of Linux scripting, is that something a responsible system administrator would do?

  • Ruby: Does it make sense to use REE with Unicorn?

    - by Miko
I am trying to figure out the optimal server stack for running Rails. As of now, nginx + unicorn seems to be the best approach. However, some folks have suggested running the REE interpreter instead of Ruby plain. Would nginx + unicorn + REE be the most powerful combination, or will plain interpreter suffice?

  • Can I get vim to correctly indent this Ruby code (Nokogiri)?

    - by Nathan Long
    The first XML Builder Example for Nokogiri looks like this: builder = Nokogiri::XML::Builder.new do |xml| xml.root { xml.products { xml.widget { xml.id_ "10" xml.name "Awesome widget" } } } end puts builder.to_xml Even though I have the Ruby Vim files installed, Vim's autoindent flattens the above example like this: builder = Nokogiri::XML::Builder.new do |xml| xml.root { xml.products { xml.widget { xml.id_ "10" xml.name "Awesome widget" } } } end puts builder.to_xml Does anybody know how to get Vim to autoindent this correctly?

  • Rails 3.0.3 and Polyglot Gem problem

    Hello all. I hope you can help me. I had a rails app running locally, and also uploaded and running on Heroku. All was well. Last week, I started work again and ran into a snag. At the beginning of my day, I opened up Terminal and ran 'rails s' to start the local server. I received this error: doug-naegeles-macbook-pro-17:elig_check dougnaegele$ rails s /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/bundler-1.0.7/lib/bundler/resolver.rb:129:in resolve': Could not find gem 'polyglot', required by 'rails (= 3.0.3)', in any of the sources (Bundler::VersionConflict) from /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/bundler-1.0.7/lib/bundler/resolver.rb:127:incatch' from /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/bundler-1.0.7/lib/bundler/resolver.rb:127:in resolve' from /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/bundler-1.0.7/lib/bundler/definition.rb:151:inresolve' from /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/bundler-1.0.7/lib/bundler/definition.rb:90:in specs' from /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/bundler-1.0.7/lib/bundler/definition.rb:135:inspecs_for' from /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/bundler-1.0.7/lib/bundler/definition.rb:124:in requested_specs' from /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/bundler-1.0.7/lib/bundler/environment.rb:23:inrequested_specs' from /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/bundler-1.0.7/lib/bundler/runtime.rb:11:in setup' from /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/bundler-1.0.7/lib/bundler.rb:100:insetup' from /Users/dougnaegele/Sites/elig_check/config/boot.rb:8 from script/rails:5:in `require' from script/rails:5 When I run 'gem list'..i can see Polyglot listed: doug-naegeles-macbook-pro-17:elig_check dougnaegele$ gem list * LOCAL GEMS * abstract (1.0.0) actionmailer (3.0.3, 2.3.5, 2.2.2, 1.3.6) actionpack (3.0.3, 2.3.5, 2.2.2, 1.13.6) actionwebservice (1.2.6) activemodel (3.0.3) activerecord (3.0.3, 2.3.5, 2.2.2, 1.15.6) activeresource (3.0.3, 2.3.5, 2.2.2) activesupport (3.0.3, 2.3.5, 2.2.2, 1.4.4) acts_as_ferret (0.5.2, 0.4.3) arel (2.0.6, 2.0.4) authlogic (2.1.6) blythedunham-sms_on_rails (0.1.0) builder (3.0.0, 2.1.2) bundler (1.0.7) capistrano (2.5.19, 2.5.2) cgi_multipart_eof_fix (2.5.0) color (1.4.1) configuration (1.2.0) crack (0.1.8) daemons (1.1.0, 1.0.10) derailed-ziya (2.1.5) dnssd (1.4, 0.6.0) erubis (2.6.6) fastthread (1.0.7, 1.0.1) fcgi (0.8.8, 0.8.7) ferret (0.11.6) gem_plugin (0.2.3) googlecharts (1.6.0) heroku (1.14.10, 1.14.3) highline (1.6.1, 1.5.0) hpricot (0.8.3, 0.6.164) httparty (0.6.1) i18n (0.5.0, 0.4.2) jk-ferret (0.11.8.2) json_pure (1.4.6) launchy (0.3.7) libxml-ruby (1.1.4, 1.1.2) little-plugger (1.1.2) logging (1.4.3) mail (2.2.12, 2.2.10) mattetti-googlecharts (1.4.0) mime-types (1.16) mongrel (1.1.5) mysql (2.8.1) needle (1.3.0) net-scp (1.0.4, 1.0.1) net-sftp (2.0.5, 2.0.1, 1.1.1) net-ssh (2.0.23, 2.0.4, 1.1.4) net-ssh-gateway (1.0.1, 1.0.0) nifty-generators (0.4.2) polyglot (0.3.1) rack (1.2.1, 1.0.1) rack-mount (0.6.13) rack-test (0.5.6) rails (3.0.3, 2.3.5, 2.2.2, 1.2.6) railties (3.0.3) rake (0.8.7, 0.8.3) RedCloth (4.2.3, 4.1.1) rest-client (1.6.1) ruby-openid (2.1.8, 2.1.2) ruby-yadis (0.3.4) rubygems-update (1.3.7, 1.3.6) rubynode (0.1.5) sequel (3.18.0, 3.17.0) sinatra (1.1.0, 1.0) sqlite3-ruby (1.3.2, 1.2.5, 1.2.4) static_record_cache (0.2.0) taps (0.3.14) termios (0.9.4) thor (0.14.6) tilt (1.1) treetop (1.4.9) twilio (2.9.0) twiliolib (2.0.7) tzinfo (0.3.23) xmpp4r (0.5, 0.4) When I run 'gem sources' I get this: doug-naegeles-macbook-pro-17:elig_check dougnaegele$ gem sources * CURRENT SOURCES * rubygems.org/ gems.github.com gems.github.com gems.github.com/ gems.github.com gems.rubyforge.org Which looks right -- that's where Polyglot lives.   • Rail test case fixtures not loading

    - by Deano
Rails appears to not be loading any fixtures for unit or functional tests. I have a simple 'products.yml' that parses and appears correct: ruby: title: Programming Ruby 1.9 description: Ruby is the fastest growing and most exciting dynamic language out there. If you need to get working programs delivered fast, you should add Ruby to your toolbox. price: 49.50 image_url: ruby.png My controller functional test begins with: require 'test_helper' class ProductsControllerTest < ActionController::TestCase fixtures :products setup do @product = products(:one) @update = { :title => 'Lorem Ipsum' , :description => 'Wibbles are fun!' , :image_url => 'lorem.jpg' , :price => 19.95 } end According to the book, Rails should "magically" load the fixtures (as my test_helper.rb has fixtures :all in it. I also added the explicit fixtures load (seen above). Yes Rails complains: user @ host ~/Dropbox/Rails/depot > rake test:functionals (in /Somewhere/Users/user/Dropbox/Rails/depot) /System/Library/Frameworks/Ruby.framework/Versions/1.8/usr/bin/ruby -Ilib:test "/System/Library/Frameworks/Ruby.framework/Versions/1.8/usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.8.3/lib/rake/rake_test_loader.rb" "test/functional/products_controller_test.rb" Loaded suite /System/Library/Frameworks/Ruby.framework/Versions/1.8/usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/rake-0.8.3/lib/rake/rake_test_loader Started EEEEEEE Finished in 0.062506 seconds. 1) Error: test_should_create_product(ProductsControllerTest): NoMethodError: undefined method `products' for ProductsControllerTest:Class /test/functional/products_controller_test.rb:7 2) Error: test_should_destroy_product(ProductsControllerTest): NoMethodError: undefined method `products' for ProductsControllerTest:Class /test/functional/products_controller_test.rb:7 ... I did come across the other Rails test fixture question http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1547634/rails-unit-testing-doesnt-load-fixtures, but that leads to a plugin issue (something to do with the order of loading fixtures). BTW, I am developing on Mac OS X 10.6 with Rail 2.3.5 and Ruby 1.8.7, no additional plugins (beyond the base install). Any pointers on how to debug, why the magic of Rails appears to be failing here? Is it a version problem? Can I trace code into the libraries and find the answer? There are so many "mixin" modules I can't find where the fixtures method really lives.

I created a blog in app/models/blog.rb: class Blog include MongoMapper::Document key :title, String, :required => true key :body, Text timestamps! end I go into the Rails console: rails c Loading development environment (Rails 3.0.0.beta) ruby-1.9.1-p378 > **b = Blog.new** NoMethodError: undefined method `from_mongo' for Text:Module from /Users/jade/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.1-p378/gems/mongo_mapper-0.7.2/lib/mongo_mapper/plugins/keys.rb:323:in `get' from /Users/jade/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.1-p378/gems/mongo_mapper-0.7.2/lib/mongo_mapper/plugins/keys.rb:269:in `read_key' from /Users/jade/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.1-p378/gems/mongo_mapper-0.7.2/lib/mongo_mapper/plugins/keys.rb:224:in `[]' from /Users/jade/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.1-p378/gems/mongo_mapper-0.7.2/lib/mongo_mapper/plugins/inspect.rb:7:in `block in inspect' from /Users/jade/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.1-p378/gems/mongo_mapper-0.7.2/lib/mongo_mapper/plugins/inspect.rb:6:in `collect' from /Users/jade/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.1-p378/gems/mongo_mapper-0.7.2/lib/mongo_mapper/plugins/inspect.rb:6:in `inspect' from /Users/jade/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.1-p378/gems/railties-3.0.0.beta/lib/rails/commands/console.rb:47:in `start' from /Users/jade/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.1-p378/gems/railties-3.0.0.beta/lib/rails/commands/console.rb:8:in `start' from /Users/jade/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.1-p378/gems/railties-3.0.0.beta/lib/rails/commands.rb:34:in `<top (required)>' from /Users/jade/code/farmerjade/script/rails:10:in `require' from /Users/jade/code/farmerjade/script/rails:10:in `<main>' Am I overlooking something really dumb, or is this something in my setup? I'm using the mongo_mapper version you get by adding it to your Gemfile, so I'm wondering if it might be that. I'd appreciate any suggestions!

  • In Ruby, how to I read memory values from an external process?

    - by grg-n-sox
So all I simply want to do is make a Ruby program that reads some values from known memory address in another process's virtual memory. Through my research and basic knowledge of hex editing a running process's x86 assembly in memory, I have found the base address and offsets for the values in memory I want. I do not want to change them; I just want to read them. I asked a developer of a memory editor how to approach this abstract of language and assuming a Windows platform. He told me the Win32API calls for OpenProcess, CreateProcess, ReadProcessMemory, and WriteProcessMemory were the way to go using either C or C++. I think that the way to go would be just using the Win32API class and mapping two instances of it; One for either OpenProcess or CreateProcess, depending on if the user already has th process running or not, and another instance will be mapped to ReadProcessMemory. I probably still need to find the function for getting the list of running processes so I know which running process is the one I want if it is running already. This would take some work to put all together, but I am figuring it wouldn't be too bad to code up. It is just a new area of programming for me since I have never worked this low level from a high level language (well, higher level than C anyways). I am just wondering of the ways to approach this. I could just use a bunch or Win32API calls, but that means having to deal with a bunch of string and array pack and unpacking that is system dependant I want to eventually make this work cross-platform since the process I am reading from is produced from an executable that has multiple platform builds, (I know the memory address changes from system to system. The idea is to have a flat file that contains all memory mappings so the Ruby program can just match the current platform environment to the matching memory mapping.) but from the looks of things I'll just have to make a class that wraps whatever is the current platform's system shared library memory related function calls. For all I know, there could already exist a Ruby gem that takes care of all of this for me that I am just not finding. I could also possibly try editing the executables for each build to make it so whenever the memory values I want to read from are written to by the process, it also writes a copy of the new value to a space in shared memory that I somehow have Ruby make an instance of a class that is a pointer under the hood to that shared memory address and somehow signal to the Ruby program that the value was updated and should be reloaded. Basically a interrupt based system would be nice, but since the purpose of reading these values is just to send to a scoreboard broadcasted from a central server, I could just stick to a polling based system that sends updates at fixed time intervals. I also could just abandon Ruby altogether and go for C or C++ but I do not know those nearly as well. I actually know more x86 than C++ and I only know C as far as system independent ANSI C and have never dealt with shared system libraries before. So is there a gem or lesser known module available that has already done this? If not, then any additional information as to how to accomplish this would be nice. I guess, long story short, how do I do all this? Thanks in advance, Grg PS: Also a confirmation that those Win32API calls should be aimed at the kernel32.dll library would be nice.

  • Thin permissions in etc folder (Ubuntu)

    - by Apollo
I am working on a RoR server setup that uses Thin and Nginx. It works fine, but only if I manually add the folder /etc/thin and set the permissions to 777 in order to use the command below: thin config -C /etc/thin/testapp.yml -c /var/www/testapp --servers 1 -e production If I don't set it to 777, I get this error: me@UbuntuRails:/etc$ thin config -C /etc/thin/testapp.yml -c /var/www/testapp --servers 1 -e production /usr/local/rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.3-p286@rails328/gems/thin-1.5.0/lib/thin/controllers/controller.rb:115:in initialize': Permission denied - /etc/thin/testapp.yml (Errno::EACCES) from /usr/local/rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.3-p286@rails328/gems/thin-1.5.0/lib/thin/controllers/controller.rb:115:inopen' from /usr/local/rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.3-p286@rails328/gems/thin-1.5.0/lib/thin/controllers/controller.rb:115:in config' from /usr/local/rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.3-p286@rails328/gems/thin-1.5.0/lib/thin/runner.rb:187:inrun_command' from /usr/local/rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.3-p286@rails328/gems/thin-1.5.0/lib/thin/runner.rb:152:in run!' from /usr/local/rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.3-p286@rails328/gems/thin-1.5.0/bin/thin:6:in' from /usr/local/rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.3-p286@rails328/bin/thin:19:in load' from /usr/local/rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.3-p286@rails328/bin/thin:19:in' from /usr/local/rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.3-p286@rails328/bin/ruby_noexec_wrapper:14:in eval' from /usr/local/rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.3-p286@rails328/bin/ruby_noexec_wrapper:14:in' I don't like to set this folder to a 777, sounds like a rubbish workaround. I run everything from an admin user account, not root. RVM runs from my admin user and gem only works in my admin as well. If I sudo that action, nothing happens because my root doesn't "know" thin. Which is the correct way to handle this? Thanks!
