• What is Perl's relation with hackers?

  I know Perl is a language revered by many hackers (as in hacker vs cracker) and respected by many good programmers for its expressiveness. I also realize it is useful to know and it's very handy at generalizing common Unix tasks (Unix here includes Linux and Cygwin). I also know that being a good hacker probably means you're a good programmer in general (references on this one are sparse around the web, but about everything Paul Graham has ever written seems approving of this statement to me). So my question is whether there is a reason that attracts hackers to Perl in particular? Will learing Perl improve my general programming, problem-solving and hacking skills if done properly? Does it present unique tools that are more useful to a hacker?

  Abstract: So, as I understand it (although I have a very limited understanding), there are three dimensions that we (usually) work with physically: The 1st would be represented by a line. The 2nd would be represented by a square. The 3rd would be represented by a cube. Simple enough until we get to the 4th -- It is kinda hard to draw in a 3D space, if you know what I mean... Some people say that it has something to do with time. The Question: Now, that is all great with me. My question isn't about this, or I'd be asking it on MathSO or PhysicsSO. My question is: How does the computer handle this with arrays? I know that you can create 4D, 5D, 6D, etc... arrays in many different programming languages, but I want to know how that works.

  Alright so I've had Linux Ubuntu 12.04 for over a year now and I still don't know anything about it. That only thing I can do with it is use the internet. I want to start streaming games that I play on my computer to Twitch.tv., but I don't know how. All of the downloads are only for windows. I found a website that tells you how to do it, but since I know nothing about linux, I can't do it. I haven't been able to get past the first step yet. Can someone please give me a step by step tutorial on how to do it. Please do not think you are being to specific, because I am sure it will help me. • All around design book for a developer (Javascript dev)

  I have begun doing a lot of javascript development recently, mostly front-end but also using node.js. As I am currently in the transition from large company to startup, they expect me as a front end developer to know how to produce semi decent designs (Which I cannot) I am looking for a book (or set of screencasts) to give me some good well rounded advice on design. I know CSS, but my design are always awful looking, I also know nothing about Photoshop (and am on Linux and have no access to it) What are your picks? I am not looking to be a full time designer I would just like to be able to contribute.

  I'm currently a senior research software engineer at a large company and am being offered a "senior staff engineer" position somewhere else. I am not sure if the new position's title conveys a sideways move or an advancement. So, all other things being roughly equal (salary, domain of expertise, etc.), what is the external difference between these software engineer titles (in general and regardless of any particular company, if possible): senior engineer senior research engineer senior staff engineer member of technical staff principal engineer Edit: Let me elaborate on "member of technical staff" since it's kind of uncommon. I think it's a high title, commonly associated with research. I know that Oracle, VMWare, and the old Bell Labs have these titles. See: Member of Technical Staff . I know what it means, but I don't know how it stacks up against the other titles, which is why I asked.

• How do I safely use a virus infected USB drive in Ubuntu?

  I have an USB drive which I know is virus infected (an anti-virus on my friend's machine detected it). Unfortunately neither of us know the virus name and I don't want to take the risk of plugging it to my Windows box again. Of course, in all probability the virus affects only Windows. (But I'm not sure) I want to know if I can safely plug the USB into my Ubuntu Lucid laptop and copy the stuff I need from the drive. If there are some precautions I need to follow what would they be?

• what knowledge would I need to make a good simulation games

  I have an idea for a game like theme park but don't know how simulation games are made. I am not some noob on his first game so I appreciated constructive answers instead of "its hard, don't do it". What I want is to know how simulation game mechanics are put together. I figure it would be heaver on the AI than normal games and not knowing much about AI would like to know some programming techniques I should look into for this style game. specific techniques please not just a book on ai. what sort of architecture would be used? I guess it would have some sort of probability engine with pre designed events that are triggered based on the AI state. Would it use a FSM or be purely event driven ? Any information on how a sims game functions would be cool.

• Problem with setting up a bootable USB on corrupted OSX

  I cant access the desktop because my harddrive is corrupted. Therefore I want to make a bootable USB stick so i can transfer all of my important files to my External HD. Problem is that Im stuck on Step 3 --- http://www.ubuntu.com/download/help/create-a-usb-stick-on-mac-osx . Im not sure of what i should change this to: hdiutil convert -format UDRW -o ~/path/to/target.img ~/path/to/ubuntu.iso It says convert failed - No such file or directory. Obviously the problem is that i dont know the path to the USB, maybe you know how to find out? Please help me. Thanks. ps. Ive downloaded the ubuntu desktop amd64+mac. pps. Unetbootin is a different alternative, but i dont know if it works?

Something really similar to AirBnB, or any other map based app. Of course, I could just take Google Maps API and build what's around. • Can I run Ubuntu Live from a USB flash-drive without destroying the data on it?

  I already have a number of files on a flash drive (8 gb) that I would prefer to keep, but I would like to try Ubuntu even if merely for the aesthetics. I use Windows XP. I know that it's definitely possible to run Ubuntu from a bootable drive like my flash drive to try Ubuntu but I would much rather keep my files intact not only on my flash drive but also my hard drive, if that's possible. I also want to know if it's entirely possible that while running Ubuntu from the USB if I can switch back to Windows while my computer is still on. If I'm missing something, please let me know. I'm very grateful for any assistance in this matter.

What I'm worried about is someone taking the project, renaming it, deploying it in the cloud and start charging people who don't even know my project exists. I know I maybe shouldn't mind, but it just sticks in my throat a bit if someone took a free ride like that and contributed nothing back. Is there any common open source license that can prevent this. I know GPL or AGPL don't.

  Hi. I know that parallel programming is a big resource in computer graphics, with moder machines, and mayebe a computing model that will be grow up in the near future (is this trend true?). I want to know what is the best way to deal with it. there is some practical general purpose usefulness in studying processor n-dimensional mesh, or bitonic sort in p-ram machines or it's only theory for domain specific hardware used in real particular signal elaborations of scientific simulations? Is this the best way to acquire the know how for how to become acquainted with cuda or opencl?   How common are circular references? The less common they are, the fewer hard cases you have if you are writing in a language with only reference counting-GC. Are there any cases where it wouldn't work well to make one of the references a "weak" reference so that reference counting still works? It seems like you should be able to have a language only use reference counting and weak references and have things work just fine most of the time, with the goal of efficiency. You could also have tools to help you detect memory leaks caused by circular references. Thoughts, anyone? It seems that Python uses references counting (I don't know if it uses a tracing collector occasionally or not for sure) and I know that Vala uses reference counting with weak references; I know that it's been done before, but how well would it work?

• Menus and text boxes look graphically corrupted in 12.10

  If I let my computer run long enough the screen gets glitchy or graphically corrupted only in certain areas i.e. in text related boxes, menus, menu bars, scroll bars, the system monitor window, etc. It becomes difficult to read what I am typing. Its been happening quite often and I can only fix it by restarting the computer, but its only a matter of time before it happens again. Don't know what else to do, its been a thorn in my side for quite some time now and I need a fix soon because its only gets more frequent until I'm rebooting my computer five times a day. • How to improve programming skills?

  I'm very new to programming. I started learning PHP about half a year ago, so I do know something. I can write small functions, I can export and import information from a database and I can make a website. I don't know OOP principles and I don't know about objects and classes. Should I move to OOP principles and learn about classes, methods and objects? If not, what should I do? Continue writing simple code? How can a programmer write his/her own API? Is OOP necessary to do this? So how can i improve my skills? I love programming. I spend my 24/7 on it, so any help will be appreciated.

  I want to experiment with the idea of an html based ad that utilizes my company's search API, is anyone here aware of any rules or documentation (general or per network) that explains the guidelines for creating such ads - ie markup, delivery etc - note this is not a question on how to use my company's api, I already know how to do that. For example, I would like to access the api with jsonp, probably via jquery? Can this be done? Would I host the ad and have loaded via an iframe? I just don't know these things. • How to support tableless columns with WYSIWYG editor?

  On the front page of a site I'm working on there's a small slideshow. It's not for pictures in particular, any content can go in, and I'm currently setting up the editing interface for the client. I'd like to be able to have one/two/more columns in the editable area, and ideally that would be via CSS - does anyone know of a WYSIWYG editor that supports this? I'm using Drupal (would prefer not to involve Panels as it would require a bit of work to make it a streamlined workflow for content entry) in case that matters to anyone. To start the ball rolling, one way would be to use templates. I know CKEditor supports templates, and it looks like TinyMCE might have something similar. I don't know how well these work with tableless columns (the CKEditor homepage demo uses tables to achieve its two column effect). Holding out for a cool solution!

• Best approach to get clicked objects from a display list (2D)

  I'm implementing a display list to manage my visuals on screen. I want to know which object is clicked. My objects already have z-order variable. With my current knowledge (almost nothing) the only thing which comes to my mind is make a linear search and get all the objects which contains the clicked point. And then select the object with the highest z-order. But I know there are far better approaches. I think it's something with trees (binary search?). - container display objects and search recursively? just don't know where to start looking, for this concrete case. Any hint link or concrete solution is welcome.

I want to work in companies that are open, innovative, and make a good contribution to the world of computer science. For example, Dropbox looks like a very fun company and its existence is very important. How do I spot this in job advertisements? EDIT: I should note that I live in Australia, so many of the fun companies that I know does not have any office here. I know only a handful of fun companies in Australia – including Google in Sydney. But I don't know that many.

  I have a few ideas that I think would be pretty game changing for online advertising and I would like to build my own network but I don't know where to start. I know it will take a lot of time for major publishers to get on board but I am more curious about the technical side. What language/database model and framework are modern ad networks built on? Basically I want to build an advertising network that registers views per page and allows publishers to manage the look of their own ads and let's the users interact with the ads. Is there any good information on doing something like this or any framework you can suggest to build on? I know this would get complicated pretty fast so if you have suggestions for ad networks that let you customize them heavily I would be glad to hear your suggestions.

• how can I contact Google about a domain misuse?

  I was trying to add a newer domain of mine to my existing Google Apps account with an already set primary domain. Google Apps then returns the message that the domain is already in use by another account. I tried finding a way to contact Google, but they have a wall up preventing anyone with an original Apps account from calling them. There's a help page saying to try retrieving the password, but how is that even possible? I don't know the email address of the owner of the Apps account using my domain, and I don't know his/her name on the account, so I can't complete the form for retrieving any of the information. Google Productforums is always a dead end. Does anyone here know how to force a removal of a domain on Google Apps from someone that doesn't own it?

• Transfer domain from godaddy to another registrar and (somewhat) maintain privacy?

  Does anyone know if its possible in any ways to do this? Transfer a private domain (via domainsbyproxy) registered at godaddy to another registrar. While I know moving a domain from godaddy requires the privacy to be disabled, what we were thinking of doing is the following: a) Update the whois info inside domains by proxy to a 3rd party. Most likely a law firm who would in essnece become our 'custodian'. b) Wait 60 days (?) c) Disable domain privacy. Now the law firms details would become public. d) Conduct the domain transfer. e) Take ownership of the domain at the new registrar. Does something like this sound possible? Does anyone know any other way to handle this? Thanks.

• How to tell what part of a 3D cube was touched

  I am writing a rather simple android game and I am implementing Open GL to draw a 3D cube that spins upon the X, Y and Z axis and I need to know where the user has clicked on the texture of the cube. The texture is a simple square bitmap (100x100) that has a smaller square in the center. I need to know if the user touches the inner square. As well was tell which face of the cube the user touches. Does anyone know how this can be accomplished if not can anyone give some pseudo code on how to tell where the ray correlates to the texture? Or at least point me in the right direction.
