• Spelling correction for data normalization in Java

  I am looking for a Java library to do some initial spell checking / data normalization on user generated text content, imagine the interests entered in a Facebook profile. This text will be tokenized at some point (before or after spell correction, whatever works better) and some of it used as keys to search for (exact match). It would be nice to cut down misspellings and the like to produce more matches. It would be even better if the correction would perform well on tokens longer than just one word, e.g. "trinking coffee" would become "drinking coffee" and not "thinking coffee". I found the following Java libraries for doing spelling correction: JAZZY does not seem to be under active development. Also, the dictionary-distance based approach seems inadequate because of the use of non-standard language in social network profiles and multi-word tokens. APACHE LUCENE seems to have a statistical spell checker that should be much more suited. Question here would how to create a good dictionary? (We are not using Lucene otherwise, so there is no existing index.) Any suggestions are welcome!

  Sorry for the lame title, my descriptive skills are poor today. In a nutshell, I have a query similar to the following: SELECT P.LAST_NAME, P.FIRST_NAME, D.DEMO_GROUP FROM PERSON P JOIN PERSON_DEMOGRAPHIC PD ON PD.PERSON_ID = P.PERSON_ID JOIN DEMOGRAPHIC D ON D.DEMOGRAPHIC_ID = PD.DEMOGRAPHIC_ID This returns output like this: LAST_NAME FIRST_NAME DEMO_GROUP --------------------------------------------- Johnson Bob Male Smith Jane Female Smith Jane Teacher Beeblebrox Zaphod Male Beeblebrox Zaphod Alien Beeblebrox Zaphid Politician I would prefer the output be similar to the following: LAST_NAME FIRST_NAME Male Female Teacher Alien Politician --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Johnson Bob 1 0 0 0 0 Smith Jane 0 1 1 0 0 Beeblebrox Zaphod 1 0 0 1 1 The number of rows in the DEMOGRAPHIC table varies, so I can't say with certainty how many columns I need. The query needs to be flexible. Yes, it would be trivial to do this in code. But this query is one piece of a complicated set of stored procedures, views, and reporting services, many of which are outside my sphere of influence. I need to produce this output inside the database to avoid breaking the system. Any ideas? This is MS SQL Server 2005, by the way. Thanks.

• Organizing code, logical layout of segmented files

  I have known enough about programming to get me in trouble for about 10 years now. I have no formal education, though I've read many books on the subject for various languages. The language I am primarily focused on now would be php, atleast for the scale of things I am doing now. I have used some OOP classes for a while, but never took the dive into understanding principals behind the scenes. I am still not at the level I would like to be expression-wise...however my recent reading into a book titled The OOP Thought Process has me wanting to advance my programming skills. With motivation from the new concepts, I have started with a new project that I've coded some re-usable classes that deal with user auth, user profiles, database interfacing, and some other stuff I use regularly on most projects. Now having split my typical garbled spaghetti bowl mess of code into somewhat organized files, I've come into some problems when it comes to making sure files are all included when they need to be, and how to logically divide the scripts up into classes, aswell as how segmented I should be making each class. I guess I have rambled on enough about much of nothing, but what I am really asking for is advise from people, or suggested reading that focuses not on specific functions and formats of code, but the logical layout of projects that are larger than just a hobby project. I want to learn how to do things proper, and while I am still learning in some areas, this is something that I have no clue about other than just being creative, and trial/error. Mostly error. • Big Nerd Ranch's Android Bootcamp - worth it?

  At work, I've been told that I must, before the end of the year, get a certification. The shop is Microsoft heavy, and I'm not. That's why I was excited when I suggested something in support of Android development, and they agreed. Before I go any further, I should say that I don't know what I think about the whole certification question. Frankly, though, I need to do this, regardless of whether I think certification in general is particularly appealing to clients. I realize that the technology is fairly accessible without all this expensive process- but I'd rather focus on Android than, say, getting some MC* scrap of paper. I don't know of any actual Android certification. Instead, I was thinking that the best regarded Android training in the industry should suffice. I've looked into Big Nerd Ranch's Android Bootcamp, and it looks promising. I live in Atlanta, which is a boon. Given that my Java skills are good, does this seem like a decent course? Or is there a better known training program that I should look into?

• What is the best solution for a blog with e-commerce?

  Hi! While there are loads of Joomla vs Wordpress posts out there, none address which is best suited to a blog with an attached online store. I anticipate having about 40 or so articles and want the full set of blogging features- tags, comments, talkback, sharing options, SEO functionality, support for ads etc. The online store will come later. I'll be the only contributor but I want to keep extensibility in mind with respect to multiple contributors, possible social network integration, and expanded categories of content down the line. I'm a developer with a lot of experience with C# and SQL Server but very little with web development, mostly in ASP.NET and basic HTML/CSS. I'm keen on learning as much as I can but don't want to reinvent the wheel or put the project on hold as I get up the learning curve. I have concerns with both Joomla and Wordpress. Joomla seems like the most extensible option but but all of the articles on blogging with Joomla I've read complain of shortcomings I'd rather not trade off. Wordpress on the other hand seems ideal for the blog aspect of the project, but a lot of people on this site recommend avoiding it for much more than that, including e-commerce. I really don't want to hack together a hybrid. Advice is much appreciated, thanks!

• autoconf libtool library linker path incorrect (need drive-letter) for MinGW ld.exe in Cygwin

  I use autoconf and when the target is mingw I was using the -mno-cygwin flag. This has been removed so I'm trying to using the mingw tool chain. The problem is the linker isn't finding my libraries /bin/sh ../../../libtool --tag=CXX --mode=link mingw32-g++ -g -Wall -pedantic -DNOMINMAX -D_REENTRANT -DWIN32 -I /usr/local/include/w32api -L/usr/local/lib/w32api -o testRandom.exe testRandom.o -L../../../lib/Random -lRandom libtool: link: mingw32-g++ -g -Wall -pedantic -DNOMINMAX -D_REENTRANT -DWIN32 -I /usr/local/include/w32api -o .libs/testRandom.exe testRandom.o -L/usr/local/lib/w32api -L/home/Tam/src/3DS_Games/lib/Random -lRandom D:\cygwin\opt\MinGW\bin\..\lib\gcc\mingw32\3.4.5\..\..\..\..\mingw32\bin\ld.exe: cannot find -lRandom To link this from the command line using the mingw linker the -L path needs the drive letter i.e mingw32-ld testRandom.o -LD:/home/Tam/src/3DS_Games/lib/Random -lRandom works. The -L path is generated from the makefile.am's which have LDADD = -L$(top_builddir)/lib/Random -lRandom However I can't find how to set top_builddir to a relative path or to start it with the drive letter (my autoconf skills are weak). As a tempoary "solution" I have removed the use of libtool. I could hack a $(DRIVE_LETTER) infront of every -L option, but I'd like to find something better.

• If I wanted to make a Pac-Man Game?

  I am immediately placing this as a community wiki thing. I don't want to ask for help in programming yet or have even a specific question about programming, but rather the process and the resources needed to make such a game. To put it simply: My college friend and I decided to give ourselves a really big challenge to further our skills in programming. In six months time we want to show ourselves a Pac-Man game. Pac-Man will be AI-controlled like the Ghosts and whichever Pac-Man lives the longest after a set of tries wins. This isn't like anything we've done so far. The goal here, for me, isn't to create a perfect game, but to try and complete it, learn a whole bunch in the process. Even if I don't finish in the time, which is a good possibility, I would want to have at least tried this. So my question is this: How should I start preparing myself? I already have started vector math, matrices, all that fun stuff. My desired platform would be DirectX 9.0c; is that advisable? Keep in mind that this is not a preference just for this project, but I wish to have some kind of future in graphics develepment, so I want to pick a platform that is future-safe. As for the game development in general, what should I take into consideration? I have never done a real game before, so any and all advise to development of mid-scale projects( if this would be a mid-scale project ) is greatly appreciated. My main concerns are the pit-falls and demotivators. Sorry if the question is so vague. If it doesn't belong here, then I will remove it. Otherwise, any and all advise regarding making larger projects is greatly appreciated.

I want skills that will enable me to write apps for <--insert hottest web trend here-- (Facebook & iphone apps for example) This is one of my goals as far as Tech. is concerned. I'd also like to have a brod knowledge of different areas of IT. I'm looking into majoring in "Computing & Security Technology". The program is offered by Drexel in conjunction with my CC. It's a 4 year degree. Can someone take a look @ the pdf below. • How do I extract a postcode from one column in SSIS using regular expression

  I'm trying to use a custom regex clean transformation (information found here ) to extract a post code from a mixed address column (Address3) and move it to a new column (Post Code) Example of incoming data: Address3: "London W12 9LZ" Incoming data could be any combination of place names with a post code at the start, middle or end (or not at all). Desired outcome: Address3: "London" Post Code: "W12 9LZ" Essentially, in plain english, "move (not copy) any post code found from address3 into Post Code". • Using htaccess rewrite/redirect so single PHP file can display data according to GET/POST variables

  Hey gang, Bear with me as I try to learn more about .htaccess redirect rules - I'm a UI guy by profession and I'm doing my best to enhance my coding skills languages other than HTML/CSS/PHP, etc So, what I have is an index.php file that contains a menu - pretty simple. If Javascript is enabled on the users computer then forms are shown below the menu using simple jQuery goodies, with each link having a 'return false;' applied. What I am trying to do is make the page accessible with JS turned off, so instead of redirecting the user to a different page, I would like to use POST or GET variables from each link, to show the various forms.. within the same index.php file - but have the URL reflect the menu choice Here is an example using menu items named - Home, About, Form1 and Form2: With JS on, clicking on of the above example buttons simply slides the form or containing the data down onto the page. With JS off, if the user clicks the 'About' link, I would like to rewrite the URL to be http://domain.com/about - but keep the user on the index.php page (since it is the only page) and be able to use POST or GET variable to show the using PHP. So, accessing http://domain.com/index.php?page=about would show http://domain.com/about in the URL but pass the GET variable 'page' to the index.php file. Hope that makes sense.. and I'm sure there are many ways to accomplish this, so if you have ideas of how to improve on it, by all means, I'd love to hear it ! Thanks again Revive

• Using VSTO in a standalone application to access Excel sheets

  Dear all, tried to research on that but sometimes I seem to lack some googling skills... I want to develop a (standalone) WinForms application which uses automation for communicating with Excel. I already know how to use the Interop, but I thought the VSTO tools would provide a more comfortable or sophisticated way to do that. My idea was: I could build a new standalone project with the excel references prepared. I could use a more sophisticated object model supplied by VSTO to communicate with Excel. However, my findings so far make me think that: VSTO can only be used to build add-ins/worksheets for Excel, not to build standalone application. There is no more sophisticated object model than the one provided by the Interop (which has such ugly things as a locale bug, a "Open(Missing, Missing, Missing...)" method and so on. I found a Worksheet and a Workbook class in the VSTO namespace, but as far as I understand it, these always refer to the CS classes for sheets and workbook which you implement when defining an Excel add-in or a workbook extension. - They cannot be used as comfortable wrappers in a standalone application. Can anybody confirm these statements or correct me where I am wrong? Further, if there should be a way to use VSTO and its "Workbook" class to load an excel workbook from a standalone application, then how do I do that? Thx, chiccodoro

• Mathematics for Computer Science Students

  To cut a long story short, I am a CS student that has received no formal Post-16 Maths education for years. Right now even my Algebra is extremely rusty and I have a couple of months to shape up my skills. I've got a couple of video lectures in my bookmarks, consisting of: Pre-Calculus Algebra Calculus Probability Introduction to Statistics Differential Equations Linear Algebra My aim as of today is to be able to read the CLRS book Introduction to Algorithms and be able to follow the Mathematical notation in that, as well as being able to confidently read and back-up any arguments written in Mathematical notation. Aside from these video lectures, can anyone recommend any good books to help teach someone wishing to go from a low-foundation level to a more advanced level of Mathematics? Just as a note, I've taken a first-year module in Analytical Modelling, so I understand some of the basic concepts of Discrete Mathematics. EDIT: Just a note to those that are looking to learn Linear Algebra using the Video Lectures I have posted up. Peteris Krumins' Blog contains a run-through of these lecture notes as well as his own commentary and lecture notes, an invaluable resource for those looking to follow the lectures too.

  Hi everybody, I want to create a function that returns the full path from a set node, back to the root value. I tried to make a recursive function, but ran out of luck totally. What would be an appropriate way to do this? I assume that a recursive function is the only way? • Career Plan: The one year plan. The three year plan.

  Hi Folks, I work as a developer however I only recently began developing full time having worked for 5 years in various roles. When it comes to career planning I think I pretty much agree with The Journeyman to Craftsman model coined in The Pragmatic Probrammer and used by Bob Martin. I see myself as a journeyman and I won't call myself a "good" (for want of a better word) until I re-evaluate my skills in 5 years time. However, as part of our careers we are encouraged to make one and three year plan with specific goals that we should hit. Unfortunately, my goal is this: Write clean code that solves a problem and is easy to maintain. From a technology point of view I want to know C++ and .net programming inside out(C#, WCF etc..) But that's it. That's my plan. Is this enough?   I'm trying to implement my own GenericIdentity implementation but keep receiving the following error when it attempts to load the views (I'm using asp.net MVC): System.Runtime.Serialization.SerializationException was unhandled by user code Message="Type is not resolved for member 'OpenIDExtendedIdentity,Training.Web, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null'." Source="WebDev.WebHost" I've ended up with the following class: [Serializable] public class OpenIDExtendedIdentity : GenericIdentity { private string _nickName; private int _userId; public OpenIDExtendedIdentity(String name, string nickName, int userId) : base(name, "OpenID") { _nickName = nickName; _userId = userId; } public string NickName { get { return _nickName; } } public int UserID { get { return _userId; } } } In my Global.asax I read a cookie's serialized value into a memory stream and then use that to create my OpenIDExtendedIdentity object. I ended up with this attempt at a solution after countless tries of various sorts. It works correctly up until the point where it attempts to render the views. What I'm essentially attempting to achieve is the ability to do the following (While using the default Role manager from asp.net): User.Identity.UserID User.Identity.NickName ... etc. I've listed some of the sources I've read in my attempt to get this resolved. • Using Excel as front end to Access database (with VBA)

  I am building a small application for a friend and they'd like to be able to use Excel as the front end. (the UI will basically be userforms in Excel). They have a bunch of data in Excel that they would like to be able to query but I do not want to use excel as a database as I don't think it is fit for that purpose and am considering using Access. [BTW, I know Access has its shortcomings but there is zero budget available and Access already on friend's PC] To summarise, I am considering dumping a bunch of data into Access and then using Excel as a front end to query the database and display results in a userform style environment. Questions: How easy is it to link to Access from Excel using ADO / DAO? Is it quite limited in terms of functionality or can I get creative? Do I pay a performance penalty (vs.using forms in Access as the UI)? Assuming that the database will always be updated using ADO / DAO commands from within Excel VBA, does that mean I can have multiple Excel users using that one single Access database and not run into any concurrency issues etc.? Any other things I should be aware of? I have strong Excel VBA skills and think I can overcome Access VBA quite quickly but never really done Excel / Access link before. I could shoehorn the data into Excel and use as a quasi-database but that just seems more pain than it is worth (and not a robust long term solution) Any advice appreciated. Alex

• Binding data to the custom DataGridView

  All, I have a customized DataGridView where I have implemented extra functionality and bounded datasource in the same custom DataGridView (Using C# and .NET). Now, I could able to use it properly by placing it on a panel control. I have added label as button on panel control to display data from datasource on to datagrid and create a binding source. Another Label which act as a button is used to update data from grid to databse. Issue: I pressed show label to display data in a dsatagridview. Modified the grid cell value and immediately pressed update label which is on same panel control. I observed that, the cursor is still in the grid cell when I press Save button. While saving, the cell value is null even though I have entered something in the presentation layer. My expected behaviour is to get the modified value while saving. Special Case: After typing something in the grid cell, if I click on somewhere else like the row below where I entered something, before I click on Save button, it is working fine. (Here, mainly I tried to remove the focus from the currently modified cell) Is there any way to bind sources before I click on save button? Please suggest me. • Execute javascript on IIS server

  I have the following situation. A customer uses JavaScript with jQuery to create a complex website. We would like to use JavaScript and jQuery on the server (IIS) for the following reasons: Skills transfer - we would like to use JavaScript and jQuery on the server and not have to use eg VB Script. / classic asp. .Net framework/Java etc is ruled out because of this. Improved options for search/accessibility. We would like to be able to use jQuery as a templating system, but this isn't viable for search engines and users with js turned off - unless we can selectively run this code on the server. There is significant investment in IIS and Windows Server, so changing that is not an option. I know you can run jScript on IIS using windows Script host, but am unsure of the scalability and the process surrounding this. I am also unsure whether this would have access to the DOM. Here is a diagram that hopefully explains the situation. I was wondering if anyone has done anything similar?

  I need to transfer files (still photos and videos) from any portable device that a user may connect (still camera, video camera, mobile phone, etc.) I don't need to worry about plain storage devices as these have drive letters. And I only care about existing files, I don't care about live video, preview video, taking new pictures, etc. I originally tried WIA, which works great except it can not transfer video files. So then I tried WPD, following along with dimeby8's tutorial: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/dimeby8/archive/2006/09/27/774259.aspx I haven't gotten the transfer working yet (I'm converting it over to C#), but I can at least see the device and enumerate the files in Win7. In XP I get nothing. It's pointed out in this thread that WPD won't enumerate devices on XP (see Lisa O [MSFT]'s post): http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en/windowssdk/thread/56459945-b757-45df-8c9f-4ebdbbb18a2c So WIA is out because it won't do video. And WPD is out because it won't do XP. Has anyone gotten this to work? Am I missing something simple here? Thanks.

• Storing Arbitrary Contact Information in Ruby on Rails

  Hi, I am currently working on a Ruby on Rails app which will function in some ways like a site-specific social networking site. As part of this, each user on the site will have a profile where they can fill in their contact information (phone numbers, addresses, email addresses, employer, etc.). A simple solution to modeling this would be to have a database column per piece of information I allow users to enter. However, this seems arbitrary and limited. Further, to support allowing users to enter as many phone numbers as they would like requires the addition of another database table and joins. It seems to me that a better solution would be to serialize all the contact information entered by a user into a single field in their row. Since I will never be conditioning a SQL query on this information, such a solution wouldn't be any less efficient. Ideally, I would like to use a vCard as my serialization format. vCards are the standard solution to storing contact information across the web, and reusing tested solutions is a Good Thing. Alternative serialization formats would include simply marshaling a ruby hash, or YAML. Regardless of serialization format, supporting the reading and updating of this information in a rails-like way seems to be a major implementation challenge. So, here's the question: Has anyone seen this approach used in a rails application? Are there any rails plugins or gems that make such a system easy to implement? Ideally what I would like is an acts_as_vcard to add to my model object that would handle editing the vcard for me and saving it back to the database.

• TeamCity + HG. Only pull (push?) passing builds

  Feels like with the popularity of continuous integration this one should be a piece of cake but I am stumped. I am setting up TeamCity with HG. I want to be able to push changesets up to a repository that TeamCity watches and runs builds on changes. That's easy. Next, if a build passes, I want that changeset to be pulled into a "clean" repository... one that contains only passing changesets. Should be easy but... TeamCity 6 supports multiple build steps and if any step fails, the rest don't run. My thought was to put a build step at the end that does a pull (or optionally a push?) to get the passing changeset into the clean repository. I am trying to use PsExec to run hg on the box with the repositories. If I try to run just a plain 'hg pull' it can't find the hg.exe even though it is set in the path and I have used the -w flag. I have tried putting a .bat file in the clean repository that takes a revision parameter and it works fine... locally. When I try to run the .bat file remotely (using PsExec) it runs everything fine but it tries to run it on the build agent. Even if I set the -w argument it runs the .bat file there but tries to run the contents on the build agent box. Am I just WAY off in my approach? Seems like this is a pretty obvious thing to do so either my Google skills are waning or no one thinks this is worthy of writing about. Either way, I am stuck in SVN land trying to get out so I would appreciate some help!

• Which DHT algorithm to use (if I want to join two separate DHTs)?

  I've been looking into some DHT systems, specially Pastry and Chord. I've read some concerns about Chord's reaction to churn, though I believe that won't be a problem for the task I have at hands. I'm implementing some sort of social network service that doesn't rely on any central servers for a course project. I need the DHT for the lookups. Now I don't know of all the servers in the network in the beginning. As I've stated, there's no main tracker server. It works this way: each client has three dedicated servers. The three servers have the profile of the client, and it's wall, it's personal info, replicated. I only get to know about other group of servers when the user adds a friend (inputing the client's address). So I would create two separate DHTs on the two groups of three servers and when they friend each other I would like to join the DHTs. I would like to this consistently. I haven't had a lot of time to get all that familiar with the protocols, so I would like to know which one is better if I want to join the two separate DHTs?

• Suggestions for entering mobile development -- pure iPhone SDK, Andorid SDK. Mono Touch or Titanium?

  I am entering mobile development. I have been working primarily in .NET since 1.0 came out in beta. Before that, I was mostly a C++ and Delphi guy and still dabble in C++ from time to time. I do web apps quite a bit so I am reasonably proficient with Javascript, JQuery and CSS. I have also done a few Java applications. I started web programming with CGI and live mostly in the ASP.NET MVC world these days. I am trying to decide on which platform/OS and tool to select. I am concerned with the size of the market available for my applications as well as the marketibility of the skills I will pick up. The apps I have in mind would work on both phones and pads. Some aspects of what I have in mind will play better on the bigger screens that will be available on pads. Here are the options I am considering: Apple iPhone/iPad using pure Apple SDK (Objective-C) Apple iPhone/iPad using Mono Touch (C#) Android using pure Android SDK (Java) Multiple platforms using something like Titanium to generate native apps from web technologies (HTML, CSS and Javascript) Multiple platforms using HTML5 web applications that run in the browser (HTML, CSS and Javascript). Which option would you choose? Do you have a different suggestion? What are the pros and cons?
