• OS X 10.8.3 + attempt to change VPN settings = no more VPN access

  I am running Mountain Lion and had gotten very tired of re-entering my password at random times when using my school's VPN network (I don't know much about these, but the type is Cisco IPSec according to the setup instructions I followed a while back). In an attempt to make life easier, I followed the instructions here, but, alas, any attempt to connect with VPN was met with the message "A configuration error has occurred. Verify your settings and try connecting again" (or something along those lines.) I then tried to do the steps in the blog post in reverse and change everything back. Upon (supposedly) doing that, though, a new error message came when attempting to connect to VPN: "The negotiation with the VPN server failed. Verify the server address and try reconnecting." Now I have no idea what to do. Is there a way to reset all VPN-related things in my system so that I can follow my school's instructions and just start over?

• NT4 server generate too much weird DNS queries, How can i see the source PID?

  I have a NT4 server that in the last two weeks started to generate too many weird DNS queries to the DNS server is set to use. I have got warnings from the IPS system that it has blocked the responses from the DNS server back to the NT4 server. The queries it generate doesn't relate to any computer in the network, it is like 120624100088.xxxxxxx.net where xxx is the internal network, the numbers are just random at each query. I have done some research on how to get the PID that is generating the queries, and i found that only Process Monitor could give me that information, but since it is NT4 system Process Monitor doesn't work on it. It is a production server and i am just can't stop services as i want. I would like to get your advice on how can i get the PID that is generating these queries? Thanks.

• RDP add domain users broken

  I have 3 servers, - domain controller with dns services - dhcp/rras - file/random server with files stored on it and nothing special so far. All servers have static IP's All servers are in the same domain (SOFTWARE) RDP is enabled for all 3 servers All servers are Windwos Server 2008 R2 I can connect to the DHCP/RRAS server via RDP I cannot connect to DC and File server When I add RPD users (both are domain admin for testing) to the File server they show up like this: What is happening what I don't see? And additional why don't I even get a login screen for RPD? Thanks in advance.

• ssh many users to one home

  Hiya, I want to allow some trusted users to scp files into my server (to an specific user), but I do not want to give these users a home, neither ssh login. I'm having problems to understand the correct settings of users/groups I have to create to allow this to happen. I will put an example; Having: MyUser@MyServer MyUser belongs to the group MyGroup MyUser's home will be lets say, /home/MyUser SFTPGuy1@OtherBox1 SFTPGuy2@OtherBox2 They give me their id_dsa.pub's and I add it to my authorized_keys I reckon then, I'd do in my server something like useradd -d /home/MyUser -s /bin/false SFTPGuy1 (and the same for the other..) And for the last, useradd -G MyGroup SFTPGuy1 (then again, for the other guy) I'd expect then, the SFTPGuys to be able to sftp -o IdentityFile=id_dsa MyServer and to be taken to MyUser's home... Well, this is not the case... SFTP just keeps asking me for a password. Could someone point out what am I missing? Thanks a mil, f. [EDIT: Messa in StackOverflow asked me if authorized_keys file was readable to the other users (members of MyGroup). Its an interesting point, this was my answer: Well, it wasn't (it was 700), but then I changed the permissions of the .ssh dir and the auth file to 750 though still no effect. Guess it's worth mentioning that my home dir ( /home/MyUser) is also readable for the group; most dirs being 750 and the specific folder where they'd drop files is 770. Nevertheless, about the auth file, I reckon the authentication would be performed by the local user on MyServer, isn't it? if so, I don't understand the need for other users to read it... well.. just wondering. ]

• Windows 2008 R2 Task Scheduler triggered an event for unknown reasons.

  Today I arrived at the office only to find that a task, which was scheduled to trigger at 5:30PM EST each Friday, had triggered on its own at 6:01AM EST this morning. I checked the event logs as well as the task schedule log and all of the evidence points to a timed trigger starting this task with the correct credentials, however the task history reports the task has not been triggered since last Friday when it ran to completion successfully. I do not have this task set to random start times or start if missed. This is the first time I have observed this happen in the Windows Task Scheduler and want to know if anyone else has come across this, why it happened and how to fix it?

  Hi All, As per my knowledge of checkpoint VPN-1. My company is using checkpoint VPN-1 R 60 ( I guess as I dont know how to check server version) Firewall(VPN Server). Now the problem is that I installed Windows 7 64 bit. But, after my research I found that there are not even one client (SecuRemote/SecuClient) for Win7 64 bit, when Firewall or server is R60. I thought of some open source solutions. Can you guys please suggest me some with the configuration required. As of now, I know the IP of the server. I know my username and password using which I connect and that is not my domain password. that i can confirm to you guys. I am not a network guy. I am more of a developer. But, I need some help in this.So, let me know if I can provide you more details. Please please i need urgent help on this.

• Replacing a Windows File Server

  We have a Windows file server that needs to be replaced. Unfortunately, there are to many custom build applications, shares, and random things that rely on the existence of that file server to just stand up a new one, so we need to make the transition as seamless as possible. We decided to copy the contents of the old server to the new and then rename the new one with the same name. I have made a list of everything I need to do. Am I missing anything? The new file server is up and running I copied the directories of the old file server to the new one I set up all the shares/permissions for those directories in advance Copy the contents from oldserver to newserver robocopy \vash\d$\nasshare\ \vash2\l$\originalvash\nasshare\ /E /ZB /copyall /dcopy:T /FP /x /v /fp /np /mt:8 /eta /log:robocopy.log /tee Rename and reIP oldserver to something else (need it available if something is missing) Rename and reIP newserver to oldserver Obviously, I need to test if shares are working properly. Are there any steps im missing?

• USB question (how durable is it, how should I workaround this)

  The plot is quite simple. Got a Razer mouse. If I plug it in, it works. After a shutdown/hibernation, I have to replug it entirely at the back of the PC. (It works in my laptop even after severel shutdown, etc, so yes I guess it's my motherboard.. but it still got 2 years of warranty and it comes with quad SLI, its not an old motherboard at all. (MSI P7N SLI FI (bought it after a hungarian guy's recommendation)). So. I only could come up with one "solution". Get 3 USB cable (you know, USB-USB). If its possible the shortest ones (don't know if the responsibility/anything will worsen), AND replug only the middle+closest to the USB port junction, since those are replaceable. What do you think? Any other idea? (BIOS is updated, mouse driver ... doesn't really matter, the mouse won't even blink a bit after this happens. It lights up and goes totally dead.)

  I've designed my own 'latest news' page for my site - and I'm trying to keep the URL's clean. (eg) It should look like this : http://www.domain.com/21/this-is-a-clean-url/ When someone links to the article, they sometimes mess it up and do : http://www.domain.com/21/this-is-a-clean-url/#random-hash-tag So what I have been doing is looking for "http://www.domain.com/21" and 301 (moved permantly) redirecting to the proper url + adding a canonical meta tag for it. Is this going overboard? Should I instead be using a (302 Found) header - and just let the canonical tag tell search engines what the proper URL for the article is? What is the best way of handling this?

• Why can't I reconnect to my Philips SHB9000 bluetooth headset?

  When I connected my Philips SHB9000 bluetooth to my Windows 7 (64 bit) for the very first time, it worked well. I had to manually change the default playback device, but otherwise it worked. Then, when I start up my computer from standby, it's nearly random when I can reconnect or not. My last option is to remove the bluetooth device and reconnect it. But now, even that doesn't work. The sad thing is, this used to work better on Windows 7 beta. Windows Update has a new driver which fails to install. Searching for this driver yields nothing. I thought all vendors had an official site for their drivers? Well, Philips seems to have none. If there is no answer to this problem, my advice is to NOT buy this headset. It's good looking, the sound is nice, but what need do we have from that if we can't use the bloody device?

• Nested loops break out unexpectedly

  Hi guys, I'm trying to create a sudoku game, for those that do not know what it is. You have a 9x9 box that needs to be filled with numbers from 1-9, every number must be unique in its row and column, and also in the 3x3 box it is found. I ended up doing loads of looping within a 2 dimensional array. But at some point it just stops, with no exceptions whatsoever, just breaks out and nothing happens, and it's not always at the same position, but always goes past half way. I was expecting a stack overflow exception at least. CPU2 Status: Processor sensors for CPU2, IERR was deasserted I've Googled it, random forum posts aren't providing me with a clear answer. It's also apparently not a word: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/deassert?s=t I can guess the meaning. Assert: to state with assurance, confidence, or force Okay. So the negative of that. The state of lack-of-confidence? What is this error message trying to tell me? Memory errors were grouped with this one: is it trying to say that IERR for CPU2 should be set, but is not? That the current system state is SNAFU but CPU2 sees everything as fine?

• Is Ubuntu a viable replacement of Windows XP for small enterprise environments?

  Hi all, I'm a newbie systems administrator, so any advice would be great. I would like to setup ubuntu 8.04 lts in a small office of consulting in management (around 50 workstations) instead of Windows XP. I would install MS Office 2007 via WINE (*). It would be a fresh installation, so the migration would be less of a pain. The new setup would also include a small server as document repository and a backup server by now. Later, I would install another goodies like a IM server, a document management solution, and whatnot collaborative tool. What do you advice in this scenario? Do you think is viable? Should I try to convince my managers this is a good idea? I consider myself as a fair experienced user in both systems, and I'm the only guy in charge of everything. I need to cut costs down, and I think that antivirus and antimalware software are a waste of money and time. Is this good idea?, or should I resign and try to lock down the Windows systems and install AV software? Is there anything else in this setup I'm not foreseeing? (*) The only catch in my test machine until now had been that Office SmartArt doesn't work properly, the rest of Office 2007 may seem ok.

  Hello :) A few years ago I spent an insane amount of time using the excellent Tag&Rename program. However, I find that for random, inexplicable reasons, some music tools simply disregard my tags, and drop or destroy the album art, or have strange handling around some characters. For example, "AC/DC" is poorly handled by most music players when I use Tag&Rename to write the tags. Is there a piece of software that works like Tag&Rename but is more compatible, or is there a way to ensure Tag&Rename writes more compatible tags?

• Use DOS batch to move all files up 1 directory

  I have created a batch file to be executed through the right-click menu in Win7. When I right-click on a folder, I would like the batch file to move all files (excluding folders) up 1 directory. I have this so far: PUSHHD %1 MOVE "%1\*.*" ..\ This seems to work as long as the folder I'm moving files from doesn't have any spaces. When the folder does have spaces, I get an error message: "The syntax of the command is incorrect." So my batch works on a folder titled PULLTEST but not on a folder titled PULL TEST. Again, I don't need it to move folders, just files. And I would like it to work in any directory on any drive. There will be no specific directories that I will be working in. It will be random. Below is the registry file I made if needed for reference. • Windows shutting down, CPU maxing out in Windows-7 32-bit? [closed]

  I have no idea, what is happening to my laptop. For last 5-6 times it has automatically shutdown while running, without doing anything serious. And I even do get the message during boot which says - Start windows normal - Start in safe mode It just boots up normal. Few days ago, my screen blinked and it the PC shutdown immediately. After that I was not able to get it started. I got it repaired, the guy said he has replaced the display chip (nVidia-nvs-140), but i seriously doubt that. Now it started working, but would shutdown every 20 mins or so. I have a dual boot, ubuntu-11.10 works just fine. Virus scan on windows shows nothing. I am pasting my perfmon output. My CPU for reason is maxing out to 100% continously, for windows internal processes. Please have a look at the attached file. Strangly now for last 2 hours it is working fine, but i am just writing emails and reading excels. ThinkPad T61 | t9300 | 3gb | nVidia 140 nvs-quadro (latest driver 296.10) What do you suggest?

• Merging and sorting multiple files with "sort"

  Hello, I have a bunch of text logfiles in the following format: ID (17 characters) Timestamp (14 characters YYYYmmddHHMMSS e.g. "20060210100040" -> 2006/02/10 10:00:40) Random data (? characters) end of line The files are already sorted by timestamp. I need to get 1 log file with all the logs from multiple logs files, sorted by timestamp. Note that the log files are really huge, around 3-4G each (and there are dozens of them) I tried the following command: sort -s -m -t '|' -k1n,1n +17 -o data_sort.txt *.TXT Here is how I ended up with this command: -s : don't bother with tie results -m : merge all logs files -t '|' : there is no | in my logs, so the whole line should be field 1 -k1n,1n: sort on the first field as a numeric value +17 : the timestamp starts at index 17 -o : output file Actually... it fails miserably. The output file data_sort.txt is just the concatenation of all files, not sorted at all :( I would greatly appreciate if anyone could provide any help on this problem! Thanks

  A number of application servers started erroring out in my domain. Troubleshooting led me to a missconfiguration of NTP. I fixed the issue, but I don't know how the issue arose in the first place. The only errors I can find are System Error: 1097 Source: useenv System Error: 1058 Source: useenv System Error: 1030 Source: useenv System Error: 1000 Source: mmc How else can I find out why NTP started acting up on my domain? Is there any troubleshooting steps to diagnose why my DC started pulling from a random timeserver with the wrong time? EDIT: Current issue actually remains: the two 2003 DCs are not syncing with the PDC (a 2k8 box). w32tm /resync -- The computer did not resync because no time data was available.

• Server 2003 R2 - II6- granting access to website via IP with subnet range

  We are trying to allow for a client to connect to our website. By default we are Denying all access except for those with the specified IPs we have configured to run, everything before has just been a single IP address. However now we must implement a range of IPs and rather than input thousands of records we want to use the group of computer options in the Grant Access page. However we have it configured to work off of the IP 72.21.192.0 with a subnet mask of 255.255.224.0 They are unable to connect. Looking over our IIS logs they are receiving a 302 error which is the same behavior anyone should get whom is unauthorized to view the page in question. The IP address coming in is 72.21.217.2, so it should be well within the rage of acceptable IP addresses. I'm at a loss as everything I look up tells me to do what we are doing. So any insight would be appreciated. Especially because I'm a software guy not hardware. Thanks!

• Active Directory: how to be SURE users can change their own passwords?

  Working on some project where a tool we have has to authenticate against AD connecting via LDAPS and perform password changes if required or requested. IN THEORY, the tool does that, and we have seen it work in other projects. IN PRACTICE, against this particular directory, it fails. Been driving me crazy. The particulars of the situation: Windows 2003 AD Defined a "technical user" for the LDAP connection with rights to change users passwords When password change is required - in this case, because pwdLastSet is 0 - the tool uses the technical account to go, bind to the controller and change the user password. If password change is not required but the user request it, then the bind is done with the user account. That last condition is the one that doesnt work. With the technical user the password change is possible, but with the user itself, it isnt. We get an error like this: LDAP access failed: javax.naming.directory.InvalidAttributeValueException: [LDAP: error code 19 - 0000052D: AtrErr: DSID-03190F00, #1: 0: 0000052D: DSID-03190F00, problem 1005 (CONSTRAINT_ATT_TYPE), data 0, Att 9005a (unicodePwd) no idea what DSID-03190F00 means cause it doesnt seem to be anywhere in google :-/ Been looking at several MS documentation pages and frankly, I'm not understanding one bit of it. There is some "control access right" called User-Change-Password that may, or may not, control what objects have the right to change their own password, which may, or may not, have to do with ACE and ACLs... There is GPO. There is maybe the password policy but it is only set to ask for passwords of 6 chars or more... Can anybody explain to me in easy-to-check steps how can I go and tell the AD admin guy (who is as lost as me) what to do to ensure that users in the AD directory (objectClass top,person,organizationalPerson and user) are able to change their own passwords by themselves?   I have a Google Spreadsheet where I would like to compute occurrences of date ranges. As you can see in my sheet, there is a column date_utc+1 which contains almost random date data. What I would like to do is put the date values into bins of 6 hours each, i.e., 12/5/2012 23:57:04 until 12/6/2012 0:03:17 would be in the first bin, 12/6/2012 11:20:53 until 12/6/2012 17:17:07 in the second bin, and so forth. Then, I would like to count the occurrence of those bins, such as bin_from bin_to freq ----------------------------------------------- 12/5/2012 23:57:04 12/6/2012 0:03:17 2 12/6/2012 11:20:53 12/6/2012 17:17:07 19 ... ... ... Hope it is clear what I mean. Partial hints are very welcome as well since I am pretty new to spreadsheeting.

  Hello, I looked a bit but didn't see any duplicate of this so my question is which free(open source) OS do you use on servers and why do you use that OS? Background I have a VPS at Linode. There is a broad range of options for which OS I can put on it including both 32 and 64bit OSs. I just use it to run my small blog and for hosting random files. It's very low traffic. I have been using 64bit Arch Linux on my VPS and though I love the OS for general usage, for a server the constant breakage is troublesome. So I'm considering trying something new and am looking for suggestions.

I really want to use a common base class for all of my binary trees, but I can't do that if performance will suffer. What causes my DerivedAvlTree to perform so badly, and what can I do to fix it?

• Lock Windows keyboard and mouse but still display screen normally

  I'm using windows 7, I have a dual monitor display. It displays important information related to the business, I'd rather that random users that walk in can't just walk over to it and start using the computer with the same access rights as the user the monitoring software is running as. What I would like is if any time someone presses a button on the keyboard including alt-ctrl-delete all that would appear is a dialog asking for a password. Then I can click cancel and it will return to showing the data I want displayed. ClearLock doesn't work I tried it btw
