• Structure of a correctly implemented JTable with TableModel and Listeners?

  I am pretty new to Java and its JTables and this is where I am struggling at the moment. I need to create a GUI which shows me results of a sql query like SELECT * FROM tblPeople WHERE name='Doe'. My idea was to create a a JFrame which displays a JTable with all found records. Besides this, I need to also implement some code to handle when a user is double clicking a record or selecting it by using his arrow keys (additional feature: pressing 12(e.g.) should select the 12th record). What is the best way to structure my program (what classes do I need and especially where do I store my logic)? I came up with structuring it the following way: Main.java ("view") SQLConnection.java PeopleTableModel.java (only stores and returns data given by the passed ResultSet, "model" inherits from DefaultTableModel) PeopleTable.java (stores basically all my logic including KeyListener and MouseListener, "controller", inherits from JTable) Are there better ways to achieve my goals? If so, what are they?

• Penny auction concept and how the timer works

  I am creating a penny auction site using PHP yii framework. The main consideration of the system is to update the database records of all active auctions (max 15 auctions) with the current ticker timer. I am seeking for advice on how i should design the system where every auction item will have a its own countdown timer stored in the database and when someone bids the auction item, the counter resets to 2 min. Every users who are connected to the system should see the same countdown timer for that particular auction. I am little confused on how i should design the system. Will there be a performance issue when there are frequent updates to the database (Mysql) where 15 active auctions are updated every seconds, the countdown timer decreases by a second in the database table for the particular auction. Schema Sample for auction_lots: Auction_id,startdatetime,counter_timer,status I am seeking for advice on how I should design this. Please help. Thank you!

  Hi, I'm currently develop a facebook mafia like PHP game(of course, a light weight version), here is a simplify database(MySQL) of the game id-a <int3> <for index> uid <chr15> <facebook uid> HP <int3> <health point> exp <int3> <experience> money <int3> <money> list_inventory <chr5> <the inventory user hold...some special here, talk next> ... and 20 other fields just like reputation, num of combat... *the number next to the type is the size(byte) of the type For the list_inventory, there have 40 inventorys in my game, (actually, I have 5 these kind of list in my database), and each user can only contain 1 qty of each inventory, therefore, I assign 5 char for this field and each bit of char as 1 item(5 char * 8 bit = 40 slot), and I will do some manipulation by PHP to extract the data from this 5 byte. OK, I was thinking on this, if this game contains 100,000 user, and only 10% are active, therefore, if use my method, for the space use, 5 byte * 100,000 = 500 KB if I use another method, create a table user_hold_inventory, if the user have the inventory, then insert a record into this table, so, for 10,000 active user, I assume they got all item, but for other, I assume they got no item, here is the fields of the new table id-b <int3> <for index> id-a <int3> <id of the user table> inv_no <int1> <inventory that user hold> for the space use, ([id] (3+3) byte + [inv_no] 1 byte ) * [active user] 10,000 * [all inventory] * 40 = 2.8 MB seems method 2 have use more space, but it consume less CPU power. Please comment these 2 method or please correct me if there have another better method rather than what I think. Another question is, my database contain 26 fields, but I counted 5 of them are not change frquently, should I need to separate it on the other table or not? So many words, thanks for reading :)

  Assuming I have a simple client-server game, where the server picks random players on a very frequent base, I was wondering what is the best way to select a random player (According to the following constraints): Solution must be high performance and highly scalable Random spread should be relatively even (meaning if I have 3 players and pick 99 times, they will all be picked 33 times more or less) Should only pick players who were active in the past X days (optional, but a big bonus) The actual DB or data model used to store players isn't an issue here, as we'll select the technology in accordance to our needs. However, high performance and scalability is (at the moment we have over 60,000 unique daily active players, and we plan on growing even more). Thanks!

• Prevent shutdown when rsnapshot is running

  Since shutdowns during rsnapshot operation will lead to inconsistent/partial backups, I wonder how to delay the system shutdown while rsnapshot is active. The task is complicated by the fact that I need a solution which is compatible with non-expert users. I.e. I need to tell reliably to the user that he needs to wait until the process is finished and not to do a hard reset. Once this is the case shutdown should continue. A possible solution could be to replace the action of the window managers (mostly KDE) shutdown/restart/hibernate buttons by a script which first checks if rsync is active and shows a message if this is the case. But I do not know if this is possible in KDE.

• mitigating lost emails when switching provider

  were about to change to gmail from a webmail provided by our hosting provider, i understand changing the mx records and all. But my main worry was if there would be any emails that would fall through the gaps of the two systems during change over. Im not familiar with the ins and outs of how the mx record works, is it like a dns record change, ie. it needs to propagate ? If thats the case would there be a period were its left my current email provider but not switched to the new gmail account ? Thus allowing emails not be delivered or worse lost ?

  I have a website in which i use tabs to navigate between pages. For example, page a displays A as an active tab and B and C background tabs. If the visitor gets to the website via page B, i also would like to display to page d, but not a and c. Question: I know i can just create index2 for b for example, so when the visitor gets to b from a, i display a,b,c and index1 when visitor gets to b from d for example. Is that a bad practice? I know double content isn't good, but in which other way can i or should i approach this problem? The tab navigation i designed uses < li and id tag do display active tab, defined in the < body tag.

  What are the conventions for item batch identifiers in inventory management systems? For example: A retail supermarket can order 'Item X' from either 'Supplier A' or 'Supplier B'. When it completes an order for the item from either supplier, it needs to store the record of the receipt. Inventory quantity for the item is increased upon receipt of the order. However it is also required to store some record of the supplier. Thus some sort of batch identifier is required. This batch identifier will uniquely identify the item received and the supplier from whom it is received. A new batch is created each time items are received in stock (for example, after an order). Hence, for purposes of accounting / auditing, information available to identify an item after it was sold comprises of ITEM_CODE, ITEM_NAME, BATCH_CODE. The BATCH_CODE is unique and is associated with DATE_RECEIVED, SUPPLIER_CODE, QTY_RECEIVED. Is this a complete system specification for the above scenario or has anything significant been left out?

  I'm unable to record audio without noise on my Ubuntu laptop . It is not a grounding problem . My windows os is able to record voice without the static noise so, my hardware is fine . I read in the Windows forums that the os has software noise filtering mechanism that's automatically enabled. How do I do the same in Ubuntu? If not, please let me know how to filter the static noise. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

I was able to record some web service traffic and identify a problem as Fiddler can record both the call to a web service and response from the web service. By seeing the actual data traffic I was able to resolve a problem found in testing in less time than it has taken me to write this blog entry! • www.domain redirecting to google?

  Note: A while back i had no place to host my domain, then via namecheap i set it to forward my domain to google I bought webhosting again today and everything was working fine. I set up vhosts and set up www.domain as the server alias. Both worked. Then i tried to set up a alternate subdomain test.domain, but failed (I did it by creating a alternate vhost right below the current one) as it kept redirecting to google. As a test, i replaced the www with test in serveralias, it still redirected to google but now even www redirects to google. I am using cloudflare, and i am really confused how to go about this. I tried listing www as a cname and as a A record, still redirecting to google. I tried checking via proxies e.t.c, its universal and hence not a problem of my PC. Please help, i am really distressed by this. I am running a ubuntu 13.10 x32 stack with LAMP. Can someone clarify this for me? Thank you. Ubunu 13.10 AMD A6-3420M APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics × 4 64bit Toshiba L775 My computer boots to a black screen, what options do I have to fix it? Typical scenario is "use a laptop docked with lid closed, only the external screen is active, suspend, take the laptop, open it somewhere"... which leads to "no screen active". To debug this problem, check if gnome-settings-daemons is getting a signal that the display configuration has changed, by running xtrace against it, and look for a RRScreenChangeNotify event when resuming the machine. If that signal is being sent, then it indicates a possible bug in g-s-d. Otherwise, it suggests a bug in either X or (more likely) the kernel which is not causing the signal to be emitted to begin with.

  When I had been using Windows 8 my touchpad had multiple gestures: 2 fingers direction top-bottom = vertical revers scrolling(if I scrolled top than page have scrolled bottom); 2 finger direction left-right = horizontal revers scrolling zoom in and zoom out like smartphones with 2 fingers 2 finger rotation = rotate image in image viewer (+ 90 deg or -90 deg) place a finger in the left edge and drag it to right = change windows application, in Ubuntu I want to change the active program to left like Ctrl+Shift+Tab place a finger in the right edge and drag it to left = open right menu and select the option moving finger on direction top-bottom, in Ubuntu I want to change the active program to right like Alt+Tab I succeed enable 2 finger vertical scrolling of System Setings, but I want that it do not work in revers sense. Do it exist a method to enable the rest of gestures and revers the vertical scrolling? edit: It's a Synaptics touchpad.

• What is a good design pattern and terminology for decoupling output?

  I have a program where I want to save some data record. And I want the output type to be flexible such that I could save the data record to a text file, xml file, database, push to a webservice. My take on it would be to create an interface such as DataStore with a Save() method, and the concrete subclasses such as TextFileDataStore, DatabaseDataStore, etc. What is the proper name/terminology for this type of pattern (I'm using the term "DataStore", log4net names things "appenders", .net they talk about "providers" and "persistence")? I want to come up with good class names (and method names) that fit with a convention if there is one. can you point me to a decent example, preferably in C#, C++, or java? Update Managed to find this stack overflow question, Object persistence terminology: 'repository' vs. 'store' vs. 'context' vs. 'retriever' vs. (…), which captures the terminology part of my question pretty well although there's not a decent answer yet.

  Prologue Following EF series (I ,II y III) in this chapter we will see how to create DB record from EF. Inserting Data Like we indicated in the 2º post: “One Entity matches with a DB record, and one property match with a Table Column”. To start, we need to create an object from one of the Entities: 1: EMPLEADOS empleado = new EMPLEADOS(); Also like, I told previously, Exists the possibility to use the Static Function defined by VS for each Entity: Once we have created the object, we can Access to it properties to fill like a common class:   1: empleado.NOMBRE = "Javier Torrecilla";   After finish of fill our Entity properties, it must be needed to add the object to the appropriate ObjectSet in the ObjectContext: 1: enti.EMPLEADOS.AddObject(empleado); or 1: enti.AddToEMPLEADOS(empleado); Both methods will do the same action, create an insert statement. Have we finished? No. Any Entity has a property called “EntityState”. This prop is an Enum from “EntityState”, which has the following: Detached: the Entity is created, but not added to the Context. Unchanged: There is no pending changes in the Entity. Added: The entity is added to the ObjectSet, but it is not yet sent to the DB. Deleted: The object is deleted form the ObjectSet, but not yet from the DB. Modified: There is Pending Changes to confirm. Let’s see, the several values of the property during the Creation steps: 1. After invoke it, the property will be EntityState.Unchanged.   What does SaveChanges Method? This function will synchronize and send all pending changes to DB. It will add, modify or delete all Entities, whose EntityState property, is setted to Added, Deleted or Modified. After finishing, all added or modified entities will be change the State to “Unchanged”, and deleted Entities must take the “Detached” state.

  In a previous post, I wrote about how to get LDAP authentication working in Collabnet. By default, all LDAP users are put into the Users role on the server.  For most purposes, this is just fine, and I don’t have a way to change this.  The documentation gives hints that you can add them to other roles, but for now, I don’t have the need. However, adding permissions to different repositories is a different question. To add them, go to the repositories list, select Access Rules and then you can enter in their username, as it sits in Active Directory to the lists for the repositories or for the predefined groups that you have created.  To my knowledge, you cannot use the Active Directory groups in collabnet, which is a big problem.  Needing to micromanage users really limits the usefulness of the LDAP integration. • Program/Wrapper (how do you call it) to automate a certain script

  In this question a script is provided, that minimizes all the other windows except the active one. But the thing is, to trigger this script a (shortcut) key-combination has to be pressed. I would love it, if it would be possible to automate this behavior, i.e. no matter what I do, only the active window is not minimized. This way I cannot view more then one open window at the same tine, which is what I'm after. Is it possible to write a script, that does this ? I a question I asked a while ago (where I learned about the above script), someone said, the proper way to do this, would be through a wrapper through which every program starts. I would also be very happy with a more sloppy solution, like activating this script 100 times per second (simulating pressing the shortcut combination a 100 times per second), if it is feasible - although I was warned, that that may not be a very good idea.

• Delaying execution of Javascript function relative to Google Maps / geoxml3 parser?

  I'm working on a implementing a Google map on a website with our own tiles overlays and KML elements. I've been previously requested to create code so that, for instance, when the page is loaded from a specific URL, it would initialize with one of the tile overlays already enabled. Recently, I've been requested to do the same for the buildings which are outlined by KML elements so that, arriving at the page with a specific URL, it would automatically zoom, center, and display information on the building. However, while starting with the tile overlays work, the building KML does not. While the page has completed loading all of the elements, the map on the page is still loading, including the KML elements. I have also tried placing urlClick() in the parser itself in various places which appear to execute after all the shapes have been parsed, but I've had no success there either. While I've been intending to strip out the parser, I would like to know if there is any way of executing the "urlClick" after the parser has returned the KML shapes. Ideally, I don't want to use an arbitrary means of defining a time to wait, such as "wait 3 seconds, and go", as my various browsers all load the page at different times; rather, I'm looking for some way to say "when the parser is done, execute" or "when the Google map is completely loaded, execute" or perhaps even "hold until the parser is complete before advancing to urlClick".

  Consider the following: We have an account named MYDOMAIN\eholz. This accounts Active Directory Login Name changes to MYDOMAIN\eburrell Now this user was a active user in a Sharepoint 2010 team Site, and had a userProfile using the Account name MYDOMAIN\eholz. Since the AD LoginName changed to eburrell hence we need to update the Sharepoint User (SPUser object) as well update the userprofile to reflect the new account name. To update the Sharepoint User LoginName we can run the following stsadm command on the Server: STSADM –o migrateuser –oldlogin MYDOMAIN\eholz –newlogin MYDOMAIN\eburrell –ignoresidhistory However to update the Sharepoint 2010 UserProfile, i first tried running a Incremental/Full Synchronization using the User Profile Synchronization service… this did not work. To enable me to update the AccountName field (which is a read only field) of the UserProfile, I had to first delete the User Profile for MYDOMAIN\eholz and then run a FULL Synchronization using the User Profile Synchronization service which synchronizes the Sharepoint User Profiles with the AD profiles.
