• Why does Mass Effect 1 run so slow on my machine if I have an XFX NVidia 9400GT video card? [closed]

  I so sick and tired of having my components pass the minimum requirements of a game and then I get 15 FPS on the game on everything low. Should't PC developers say 'use at least this video card for a smooth 30 FPS'? Here are my specs: Windows 7 2GB DDR2 RAM XFX Nvidia 9400gt Intel Pentium D Dual Core 2.8ghz I should be at LEAST getting 30 FPS on everything low right? Please tell me what I can do to make games run as they should, or is my video card not good for these games? Here are the recommended requirements from the official site: Recommended System Requirements for Mass Effect on the PC Operating System: Windows XP or Vista Processor: 2.6+GHZ Intel or 2.4+GHZ AMD Memory: 2 Gigabyte Ram Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GTX or higher. • Lync CMS replication is failing for all Domain Computers

  I have Lync Server 2010 and Active Directory installed on 2 different Windows Server 2008 R2 machines. I have added a Windows 7 PC to AD. And I have added this computer to Trusted Application Servers Pool and published the topology. I want to build an UCMA application to extend Lync Server functionality. I have installed UCMA 3.0 SDK in the same computer where Lync Server is residing. But, CMS Replication isn't happening and "Get-CsManagementStoreReplicationStatus" always gives Uptodate as "False" for my Windows 7 PC. I have even tried "Invoke-CSManagementStoreReplication" but nothing changed. • Getting SMB file shares working over a PPTP VPN

  I'm having issues getting SMB file shares working over a PPTP VPN. The server setup consists of a security device (DrayTek V3300) which passes the PPTP authentication to a SBS2003 server running RRAS. The server is the DC and provides DNS and WINS, the single NIC's name server is set to the NIC's IP (192.168...), and DHCP on the DrayTek sets the server IP as the DNS. If I create a new VPN connection in Win7, leaving everything as default apart from the server, username, password and domain, I can: ping everything by IP address resolve IPs with nslookup using their fully-qualified name, as in nslookup fileserver.mydomain.local ping machines by fully-qualified name, as in ping fileserver.mydomain.local However if I try to access a file share: within Explorer, I get "Windows cannot access ..." with "Error code: 0x80004005 Unspecified Error", using net use z: \\fileserver.mydomain.local\share, I get "System error 53 has occurred. The network path was not found." If I add the machine name to my HOSTS file I can use the file share, which is my last-ditch workaround, but I have a number of VPN users and would rather a solution that doesn't involve me trying to hand-edit system files on computers half a country away. If I set the WINS server explicitly in the connection's IPv4 settings I don't have to use the FQN to ping the machine, but that doesn't change anything else. EDIT: The PC I'm having the issue on is running Win 7 Home Premium. After more testing I actually have two other PCs that work, one W7HP, one XP Home, and another Vista PC that doesn't work (not tested as much as the others), all four on the same internet connection (behind the same router). All of them were tested with a straight-forward, all defaults, new VPN configuration.

• KVM recommendations

  I recently tried out a cheaper KVM solution, a dual monitor one with a USB hub and audio/mic support. It seemed the perfect KVM. However, these are my experiences. When using my keyboard via the PS/2 connection, none of my multimedia keys work (useful, because it has a volume control and my speakers do not, only on a wireless remote control.) I plugged the keyboard in via the USB port - and it seemed to work. However, I believe to switch the hub from PC to Mac, you need to use a keyboard combo, which is only supported when the keyboard is plugged in via PS/2 Sometimes the middle mouse button doesn't work when connected via PS/2. The multi monitor is VGA - I just found out by the looks of things my Mac Mini outputs DVI Digital only (though this is my fault!). Mac works with 2 screens, but switching and switching back can cause it not to display on the 2nd screen unless I go detect displays again. My question is - is there a KVM out there that supports these features? USB keyboard and mouse inputs will full multimedia keys support Dual monitor DVI connections Hotkey to change PCs and physical button USB hub Emulate screens attached when switching to a different computer Works with PC and Mac Audio / Microphone support Does one exist, that won't cost the world? So far the only one that seems to support all this (that I can tell) is this one. UPDATE I ended up buying the Aten CS1642. It's expensive, but it seems to work great!

• Simple P2V help from Linux to Windows

  I have two OS's installed on different drives in my PC. One linux (Centos 5.4) and one windows 7. Its getting tiresome to constantly have to stop and restart the PC when I want to use either OS. I would very much like to use Windows 7 as my host OS and access my linux OS from within Windows. However, im having trouble deciphering exactly how to do this (many of the articles seem confusing and a bit overkill) From what i have seen its possible to use VMWare converter to convert the physical linux image to a virtual image so that I can use it in windows. As im having problems understanding how this is done, I would really appreciate a step by step guide (for a newbie), or any simple tutorials that you can point me at. Some questions beforehand: 1) My linux image is around 80gb, do i need to take this into consideration? The linux drive is around 180gb in total. All my other drives are NTFS non writeable in linux (as I use them in windows and ntfs is dodgy in linux), so probably not possible to move the image over to my ntfs drives 2) Can I just zip the linux files up somehow and transfer it to windows to create the p2v? 3) Is it possible to do the P2V conversion while I am logged into windows. I can see the actual linux drive loaded in disk manager, but windows doesnt read linux file systems so im confused as to how to access the linux drive if this is possible. 4) Or will i need to do the whole p2v conversion inside linux?   I just tried to install windows 8.1 on my laptop, but it fails to install with the message: Sorry we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We restored your previous version of Windows to this PC 0xC1900101 - 0x20017 It looks like on the first boot that the laptop is going to the PC restore screen (it asks what kind of keyboard I have, and then what repair optins I would like to take). Thus far I have just been selecting "Continue to windows 8." I'm running a Lenovo x220i tablet. I've got 43GB of free disk space. It installed just fine on my desktop. The primary difference between the two machines is that the desktop has media center install, and isn't using TrueCrypt. • IMAP proxy as a POP3 hub?

  Simple scenario, complicated technology: One family receiving mail from five email addresses via POP3 into one Outlook inbox on a single PC. Now we'd like to be able to replicate that single inbox across multiple devices (eg. desktop PC, laptop, netbook, smartphone). If we continue using POP3 as the mail transfer protocol, messages will be downloaded to one device and will not be visible to the others; replies will likewise be isolated on the sending machine. If we switch to IMAP, I understand that we can have multiple devices maintaining a shared view of an inbox hosted at the server end, but what about multiple accounts? I tried changing the account configuration in Outlook to fetch from the mail providers' IMAP service instead of POP3, which does give a shared view across multiple devices but also causes Outlook to create a separate inbox and PST for each account. This is awkward because it means there are five separate folders that need to be checked, and Outlook tools like search filters and rules don't seem to work across accounts. To get what I want (five accounts delivered into one shared mailbox) it seems that I would need some sort of intervening server that collects mail (using POP3) from all our accounts into a single inbox while preserving the original destination addresses, and then serves it up to all our devices using IMAP. Is this workable? Is it a good approach? Is there an easier way?

• Mapping printers using Group Policy Preferences; works on Windows XP, not on Windows 7 x64

  I'm trying to use Group Policy Preferences to manage user connections to shared printers. The print server is Windows Server 2003 R2 Std edition. Several printers are installed, and I've added x64 editions of all the drivers to the print server as well. I've created a new GPO containing the printer preference settings. Printer mappings are targeted based on AD security group membership. I log on to a Windows XP PC with the Group Policy CSEs installed and the printer maps perfectly. I log on to a Windows 7 x64 PC and it doesn't map. If I manually connect to the shared printer, I get a prompt which asks me to confirm if I trust the server before installing the driver, and then it works perfectly. I have domain admin rights and my UAC settings have not been changed from the default, i.e. UAC is enabled and the default level is selected. Is the printer mapping failing because it's unable to prompt me to install the driver, or is there something else afoot?

• Windows 7: Touch gestures in IE not working without explorer.exe being run once

  Details: Internet Explorer 9 and Windows 7 Professional, running on a HP TouchSmart (touch screen PC). It is going to be a kiosk PC (running a custom GUI for displaying websites). Scenario 1: When running Internet Explorer as a normal program in Windows 7, touch functions work perfectly. I can scroll the website by dragging it with my finger, I can pinch zoom and I can touch-and-hold right click. I now change the default shell in Windows to Internet Explorer (ie. IE starts instead of explorer.exe). Internet Explorer of course starts up when logging in. However, touch functions are reduced to basic clicking (no dragging, no pinch zooming, no touch-and-hold right click). Then I manually start explorer.exe, and the touch functions work again! And here is the weird part: When I kill explorer.exe, the touch functions keeps working - even if I close IE and start a new instance. Scenario 2: The exact same, but instead of changing the default shell to Internet Explorer, I change it to my own program, which uses an embedded Internet Explorer ("WebBrowser"). Same thing happens. What I've tried: Autorun programs: When explorer.exe launches, it launches all the autorun programs. There are no relevant programs being run by explorer, but just in case, I have manually started all the autorun programs, so that it is identical (but without explorer.exe) to a normal login. It still does not work (until I launch explorer.exe). Specifically TabTip.exe, TabTip32.exe and wisptis.exe are all running. All services are also started. To sum it up Running explorer.exe once changes something in the touch capabilities of Internet Explorer. It doesn't matter if explorer.exe is running - as long as it has been run once. Does anyone know what causes this behavior? Or how I can circumvent it neatly? Thanks!

• Why are my Windows 7 updates continuously failing?

  I'm an advanced level user here with an odd issue. I have two Windows Updates that are failing to install, every single time. I'm getting a mysterious "Code 1" error on both updates, an error for which I'm having difficulty finding a solution. The updates in question are: Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2538243) System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB947821) [May 2011] Because these updates are failing, the Shut Down button in my start menu always has the shield icon next to it, indicating that "new" updates will be installed on shut down. But, of course, they'll fail and when the PC is restarted, the shield icon is still there.   I'm having some trouble with the SQLSERVER PSDRIVE. See error below. I only have named instances on my PC, both 2005 and 2008 Added the SQL snapins. The PC is named YODA The SQL instance is SQL2008 Navigate to the Databases folder for YODA\SQL2008. You can see the path below. dir -name spits out a connection error trying to connect to YODASQL2008\DEFAULT when it should be trying to connect to YODA\SQL2008. Then it outputs the db name which is Twitter in this case. Is there something missing from my config? • Error installing Sony Remote Play

  I'm trying to install Remote Play software to connect my laptop to my PS3. I've found a guide with instructions which seem to be in fairly wide use (found similar walk-throughs on numerous other sites), for running the software on a non-Vaio PC. Tech-Recipies: Playstation 3 – Use Remote Play on any Windows 7 PC The setup essentially goes like this: Download Remote Play software. Download patch by NTAuthority. Install Remote Play as normal. Reboot. Extract NTAuthority patch to Remote Play program folder. Manually register patched DLLs via CLI. Run Remote Play software. Sadly, my problem is early in - Step 3. I had to use Google to find the software download, as the link from Tech-Recipies seems broken. I found the download on Sony's site here: Sony eSupport: Remote Play with PlayStation®3 After downloading and running the software, I hit "Next" at the welcome screen and "I Agree" at the EULA screen. After this, a popup informs me that Setup is checking my computer's information. Then, Setup terminates with this error: I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate x64. Is anyone familiar with this error in this software? Is there a way to work around it? Did I perhaps pick the wrong download from Sony's site?

• RTL8192SU Linux Issue Installing Driver

  OK I've read tons of fourms of people getting the onboard RTL8192SE working and the RTL8192SU working dif is U = USB they are both N and i have both Toshiba L500D-00T pre-installed Win Vistax64-HP and i have obtained the free Win7x64-HP upgrade the onboard wificard sucks and can't hold a stable connection for more then 20minutes in windows but the usb is amazing. Now problem is i tried both Ubuntu and Mandriva with no resolve the issue is the onboard drive detects and actually SHOWS that it's there but no wireless networks detect so it's saying no SSID's are broadcasting which i know is a lie since I'm running a 2wire bell dsl modem with built in wifi and a Linksys wrt54g w/ DD-WRT firmware and both are broadcasting fine. Why don't i use the USB? In the hardware device manager in mandriva it shows up as unknown but shows that it's realtek and that it's a 8192 chipset. but no option to for a driver install and when i do a make in terminal i get this error and no clue what it means [root@John-PC rtl8192se_linux_2.6.0010.1020.2009_64bit]# make make: *** /lib/modules/2.6.31.12-desktop-3mnb/build: No such file or directory. • How to restrict file system when logged into terminal services

  What I need to accomplish: With one login, when user is physically in the building I need them to see everything. When they are using terminal services with same login they should not be able to see the file system on the network. I can lock down the PC running terminal services as that is its only use. Details: Windows/2003 Server with terminal services. One login for a user (e.g., johndoe). When johndoe logs into the network at his desk in the office, he can see the network files according to group policy. When johndoe logs into terminal services from outside the building, we do not want to allow him see the network. Using 2x to do a published app, but that app has a "feature" that allows user to see network. Published application on termina services (only) is a document management system that is tied to windows login, so I can't give them two logins. With one login, when they are in the building I need them to see everything. When they are using terminal services they should not be able to see the network. I can lock down the PC running terminal services as that is its only use.

  We have purchased a Dell Optiplex 9010 SSFV for our organization's work. Since the first installation two of the USB keyboard keys were not working properly. I had to press those keys two times simultaneously, on first time keys did not work and for for second time it printed two characters (as it were buffering first character.) Two keys that were not working properly: Hexangrave (Below the ESC key: `) Double Quotes (Left the enter key ") We registered our complaint with DELL and they suggested (with some hard to understand and weird ENGLISH accent) some test and tricks, such as switching to different ports, checking keyboard on different PC, and it worked well with diff. PC(with Windows 7 Home Premium installed). It was clear that it is an OS fault, hence they suggested to re-install OS. Problem began here, we have a project on the run and currently a video editing project setup on our system, so can't re-install system in hurry and also DELL persons were not providing any other solution such as updating keyboard driver, etc. Arguments I am a Software Engg. and don't think it is a feasible solution to re-install entire system for simple problems. This prob is coming since the fresh system installation, so I don't think it will solve the problem. Finally, I had to find solution myself and got it here, now I want to show my disappointment to dell persons or at least tell them that they should improve there support system to not advice to re-install entire system for that simple problems. Notes We have purchased 5 years NEXT business day support from DELL for around 8000 INR (Not for that kind of solutions from DELL). It is Dell India Support System. So can anyone tell me how to tackle dell support system officially, so that they will pay more attention in near future. Thanks

• Outlook slow to open attachments

  When a colleague tries to open attachments in her email (Outlook 2003 talking to an Exchange 2007 server) they talk ages to open. The files are relatively small, all less than 1MB. We've tried creating a new Windows profile for the user and tried creating new Outlook profiles, however that hasn't made any difference. And we've tried accessing her account from someone else's PC, and the attachments open immediately there. The only thing that might provide a clue is that Process Monitor shows Outlook on her PC trying to write the file to a folder within the user's "Temporary Internet Files" folder with FAST I/O DISALLOWED errors. Can't find a lot of useful information on that message online though. What causes the FAST I/O DISALLOWED errors? And would that make opening attachments so incredibly slow that opening a < 1MB file can take a matter of minutes? UPDATE: Discovered that this isn't just an issue with Outlook. Other files being accessed over the network show the same FAST I/O DISALLOWED errors in Process Monitor. The problem is just more noticeable with Outlook, because although other applications take a while to open files it isn't a matter of minutes.

  Hi, I have setup Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on my PC. I have 4gb RAM and my BIOS states the correct amount (4096mb), but I cannot Windows (System Manager) says I have 4.00gb (3.25gb usable). This seems to be a popular issue, and I have looked for an integrated video card (integrated with my chipset) to disable but haven't found anything. What else can be preventing me from seeing all 4gb? When I had Vista 32bit, it would say 3.25gb RAM not 4.00gb (3.25gb usable). I have an x64 CPU and when I brought my RAM, I used a compatibility tool from Crucial (the memory vendor) to test how much memory my PC can support and 4gb was the answer (this was a windows app I think). Chipset is Intel(R) G33/G31/P35/P31 Express Chipset PCI Express In the bios, I looked for an onboard video card (integrated) and there was no such thing, but a couple of other onboard devices. There are also no "Resource Mappings" settings. FURHTER DETAILS: Chipset North Bridge: Intel Bearlake G33 South Bridge: Intel 82801IR ICH9R Maximum Memory Amount 8 GB Graphics Controller Type Intel GMA 3100 (Enabled) I guess the first thing is, how do I disable the graphics controller? EDIT: This thread (http://forums.legitreviews.com/about23417.html) indicates the issue is with memory mapped devices, but someone on this thread says that does not apply to x64. • Black screen appears when booting new install of Ubuntu 11.10 on my desktop, cannot access Grub menu to fix

  I installed 11.10 on my desktop PC but get a black screen after the BIOS screen when I try to boot it. I was able to run 10.04.04 on my hard drive before installing 11.10 and I am also able to use 11.10 on my usb pendrive and CD ROM. I've tried unplugging all USB devices before booting and also upgrading from 11.10 to 11.10. Holding the shift key from the BIOS screen doesn't allow me to access the GRUB menu to try: Highlight the first entry, press “e” to edit it. Navigate to words “quiet splash”, delete them and type “nomodeset” in their place (without quotes). Press Ctrl + X to continue boot. Once on the desktop, go to System Administration Additional Drivers and activate the recommended drivers. So running 11.10 on my pendrive, I tried editing /etc/default/grub, commenting out the GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT setting by putting a '#' in front of it to display the grub menu and setting GRUB_TIMEOUT setting to a value greater than or equal to 1 e.g. GRUB_TIMEOUT=10. However, when I run sudo update-grub, I get: /usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for / (is /dev mounted?) I get the same error with update-grub after: sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt and after: sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda reboot sudo update-grub Other suggestions to fix the update-grub problem: Open synaptic, then purge all the related grub installed packages and reinstall grub-pc then and finally: sudo update-grub Or use Grub Customizer http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1195275 What would be the best way to approach this? I'm concerned about purging "all the related grub installed packages" but if it's true some files are corrupted this would seem necessary. Also, was I executing the correct commands i.e. with mount and grub-install, before running grub-update?

• File transfer from MP3 player to computer

  I own an old 20GB Creative Zen jukebox (all external screws are gone on it LOL) and I would like to transfer files back to my PC to get them on my new iPod. Problem is, no matter what software I use (WinAMP, Creative Media Source or Windows Media Player), it just stops transferring files on my HD with an error message that says there is no more space on the destination folder. Problem is, there is still 320GB free. I tried lot of things like installing newer driver, latest Zen plug-in for Media Source, latest WinAMP version. Sometimes, it just works and then again, it stops working and I get this non-sense error. Restarting my PC sometime solves the issue by giving me enough time to transfer 10 or 15 more files and then I get the error again and again. Yesterday though I managed to transfer up to 3GB of MP3s on my computer before getting the error. Seems like I'm having a driver issue or a weird behavior from the player and/or the software I'm using. 3 different software can't reproduce the exact same issue by themselves so it must be something related to the driver. I can't find any post of any sort concerning such issue on old forums. Any idea?

  I am currently learning about chef. What I understood so far: I have to install chef-server on an own server or use the hosted chef. I have to install chef-client on the servers that I want to manage aka nodes (manually or using knife bootstrap). I installed several chef tools on my own PC that I can use to manage the nodes, e.g. knife. Now in my case the specialty is that the nodes are behind a firewall/load balancer/proxy. The nodes can access servers on the outside via NAT (http works and I can configure chef-specific hosts to work as well). However they can only be contacted from the outside via a ssh tunnel. There is really much documentation about chef available but I did not find an answer to these questions: When using knife, is it enough when I set up a ssh tunnel manually on my own PC or does the chef server need to contact the nodes? When using knife, can I configure it to setup a ssh tunnel automatically? When using the chef server web ui can I configure it to connect to the nodes via ssh tunnel or do I need a setup where I setup the tunnel myself e.g. using monit? Is this even possible with hosted chef? Instead of using knife or the web ui: Can I issue the same management commands directly on the nodes using chef-client? What solution would you recommend? • Server appears to have lost ability to read PHP files with LAMP

  I have LAMP installed on a PC that is running Ubuntu 11.10. LAMP was running fine but I had to restart the PC because Unity was messing up (as it often does) and the tool bar had disappeared. When it started up, I was unable to fire up any php files. I have a file index.php in /var/www. It is owned by www-data as is the directory that it is in. The LAN address of the server is 192.168.1.10. However when I type 192.168.1.10 into the URL box on Mozilla FireFox, I get Unable to connect Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at 192.168.1.10 This server is connected to another server on the LAN that has the LAN address 192.168.1.4. When I type 192.168.1.4 into the Firefow URL box on 192.168.1.10, I see the display associated with index.php on 192.168.1.4. Why can it not display its own /var/www/index.php? Any assistance with this would be greatly appreciated, Peter.

• Wireless disconnect randomly with wpa_supplicant reason=2

  I installed ubuntu-server 12.04 on my PC , and I use an usb wireless card to join the network. It works ok when I boot up my PC , but the wireless disconnects after a while. I pkill wpa_supplicant and reload the driver rtl8192cu , then it works a again. Then it disconnect again after about a random minutes. • How to connect the virtual networks of vmware guests running on different hosts?

  In a test setup, we are running several virtual machines on a single vmware workstation host. All virtual machines are connected via a "host only" network. This runs fine up to 2 or 3 virtual machines (depending on the host hardware). To allow more virtual machines, we want to use more host machines. Details about the environment and applications: Host PCs are running Windows XP in a corporate intranet. VMware used is Workstation 6.5 Guests are running Windows Server 2003 All guests act as Web Servers One of the guests additionally acts as Windows File server, offering shared folders for the other guests to connect to. Restrictions: VMware guests shall not be visible from the intranet. Changes to the host PC are restricted by corporate policy. In the virtual network, no domain controller exists. All virtual machines are member of the same workgroup. Running the virtual network as NAT is possible. Port forwarding might be used if it does not conflict with ports used by the host PC. Looking for a solution, I found hints about using router or vpn software on the hosts, but without any details how to setup. (I found a similar question Sharing the network between 2 VMware hosts, but the answer was not sufficient for me.)
