  • Slicing a time range into parts

    First question. Be gentle. I'm working on software that tracks technicians' time spent working on tasks. The software needs to be enhanced to recognize different billable rate multipliers based on the day of the week and the time of day. (For example, "Time and a half after 5 PM on weekdays.") The tech using the software is only required to log the date, his start time and his stop time (in hours and minutes). The software is expected to break the time entry into parts at the boundaries of when the rate multipliers change. A single time entry is not permitted to span multiple days. Here is a partial sample of the rate table. The first-level array keys are the days of the week, obviously. The second-level array keys represent the time of the day when the new multiplier kicks in, and runs until the next sequential entry in the array. The array values are the multiplier for that time range. [rateTable] => Array ( [Monday] => Array ( [00:00:00] => 1.5 [08:00:00] => 1 [17:00:00] => 1.5 [23:59:59] => 1 ) [Tuesday] => Array ( [00:00:00] => 1.5 [08:00:00] => 1 [17:00:00] => 1.5 [23:59:59] => 1 ) ... ) In plain English, this represents a time-and-a-half rate from midnight to 8 am, regular rate from 8 to 5 pm, and time-and-a-half again from 5 till 11:59 pm. The time that these breaks occur may be arbitrary to the second and there can be an arbitrary number of them for each day. (This format is entirely negotiable, but my goal is to make it as easily human-readable as possible.) As an example: a time entry logged on Monday from 15:00:00 (3 PM) to 21:00:00 (9 PM) would consist of 2 hours billed at 1x and 4 hours billed at 1.5x. It is also possible for a single time entry to span multiple breaks. Using the example rateTable above, a time entry from 6 AM to 9 PM would have 3 sub-ranges from 6-8 AM @ 1.5x, 8AM-5PM @ 1x, and 5-9 PM @ 1.5x. By contrast, it's also possible that a time entry may only be from 08:15:00 to 08:30:00 and be entirely encompassed in the range of a single multiplier. I could really use some help coding up some PHP (or at least devising an algorithm) that can take a day of the week, a start time and a stop time and parse into into the required subparts. It would be ideal to have the output be an array that consists of multiple entries for a (start,stop,multiplier) triplet. For the above example, the output would be: [output] => Array ( [0] => Array ( [start] => 15:00:00 [stop] => 17:00:00 [multiplier] => 1 ) [1] => Array ( [start] => 17:00:00 [stop] => 21:00:00 [multiplier] => 1.5 ) ) I just plain can't wrap my head around the logic of splitting a single (start,stop) into (potentially) multiple subparts.

  • Change a dropdown depending on another dropdown

    I'm trying to create a three select dropdowns that represent a persons birthday. I'm taking into consideration that there are 4 months with 30 days, 7 with 31 ,and 1 with 28 or 29 depending if it's a leap year or not. I would like the days dropdown to show the number of days depending on which month is chosen in the month dropdown. Here's what I have now.   • Selecting Date Range on a PHP form and displaying results from MySQL database

  • Server taking too long to respond error

    This is my first post on serverFault and my first entry in to web server configuration. The hardware and software. CPU: GenuineIntel, Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E7500 @ 2.93GHz OS: Linux 2.6.18-128.el5 Memory: 2Gb Background. I am running a small database (MySQL), around 1000 records with each record containing 44 fields. At the start of each day “00:01” the tables are cleared and populated with fresh data. The are 10 remote PCs all running Winodws XP and Firefox internet browser. All remote PC’s are connected to the internet using a min 4Gb broadband connection. Each remote PC runs a URL which displays a dynamic page of data which is refreshed every 20 seconds. This is a continual process 24 hours a day. I problem I am having is on odd occasions throughout the day the PC browser error with “Server taking too long to respond error”. What I am trying to find our is if I have the correct setting in the httpd.conf file on the server. Any help or advice anyone can provide would be very helpful.   • Server cost for smartphone app with web service

    Hello, I am working on a smartphone application that will require a backend web service - but I have absolutely clueless to how much it will cost. Web Service will handle: - login of users - cataloging of our user base - holding minimal profile information for users (the only binary data is a display picture which will be < 20k each) - performing some very minor calculation/algorithm before return results - All the above will be communicated to server from a smartphone (iPhone/BlackBerry/Android) Bandwidth Requirements: - We want to handle up to 10k users throughout the day. - I predict 10k * 50 HTTP requests a day = 500,000 requests a day * 30 = 15 million requests a month Space Requirements: - Data will be in SQL database. - I predict 1MB/user * 10k = 10GB + overhead. In other words - space is not a big issue. Software Requirements: (unless someone knows an alternative) - Windows Server 2008 + IIS - MSFT SQL Server Note: This is 100% new to me, so please hit me with all you got. Do I need Windows Server or are there alternative? Is it better to get multiple cheap servers to distribute load? Will Amazon S3 work for me? How about Windows Azure? Thank you!!

  • .htm pages working but .aspx pages throwing errors

    Our site has thousands of visitors per day but we've been receiving reports from some of our members that they are able to hit our main page, presumably because it's a .htm page, but when they click off to a .aspx page, they get an error. I've done as much research as I know how and here is what I have come up with: - We have not made any changes to IIS on our server in months. - We have a couple of customers that have been willing to work with us and provide information about their system. One customer is running Vista, the other is running XP. - We had one of the customers test both Firefox and MSIE. She gets same error in both. - One customer said, "We were able to post the profile and searched on available jobs and it worked w/ Firefox for a day, then it just quit working...we did not change any settings to Firefox after we posted the profile." - We asked the customer to clear their cache and try again. They responded with, "We just cleared the cache and got the same error; btw, I periodically clear the cache -- almost every day." Summary We have thousands of customers that hit our site with no problem. We can't reproduce these errors. These customers are getting the same error in different browsers. They are only getting the error on .aspx pages. They still get the error after clearing their cache. We would appreciate any thoughts on what other questions we could ask these customers or thoughts on how we can further troubleshoot this problem.
