In times where there are lot of cloud based hostings what would still make you go for dedicated or vps hosting ?

Are dedicated hosting yet cheaper and would remain so ? Do they really going to survive as cloud based offering are also getting cheaper day by day ? I am asking to gain perspective of long term scenario in hosting space as well as to know what is the current situation. Everywhere I go there is this buzzword "cloud" and audience don't even bother to compare it with dedicated hosting options. Is cloud really the way to go ahead ? what are it's cons ?

How to install ubuntu 12.04

I've had ubuntu on my pc for about 5 years,after the new 12.04 version and a day and a half trying to get it to just boot up. I will take it off my pc and rely on windows. I have 5 pc's which I built and am not an amateur, After installing it numerous times and even to run it from your webpage (to no avail). Granted I do have nvidia drivers on it, but after I went to their webpage and downloaded and installed the linux driver it,it still would not boot, by the way I took 2 different pc's apart and used what I thought were compatible (I shouldn't have to do this) parts. I have it on a seperate hd which I will remove and format. Have a nice day and so long (2 much trouble).

How do I make a USB RS232 dongle show up in /dev/ttyUSB* ?

I have a couple of FTDI based USB to Rs232 serial dongles. Sometimes when I plug them into my Ubuntu 10.04 laptop, they show up as /dev/ttyUSB0 and /dev/ttyUSB1, which is what I want to have happen. But sometimes they don't. When they don't, sometimes rebooting fixes the problem and sometimes it doesn't. They always show up in lsusb hanging off of Bus 5: Bus 005 Device 003: ID 0403:6001 Future Technology Devices International, Ltd FT232 USB-Serial (UART) IC Bus 005 Device 002: ID 0403:6001 Future Technology Devices International, Ltd FT232 USB-Serial (UART) IC Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub I can see them if I do ls /dev/bus/usb/005 as 002 and 003. But if I pass /dev/bus/usb/005/002 to pyserial, which is what I'm using to access /dev/ttyUSBx, I get SerialException("Could not open port: [Errno 13] Permission denied: '/dev/bus/usb/005/002'",).

I am writing a rogue-like 'zombie' management game. The game map will be similar to Prison Architect. A top-down 50 X 50 grid. I want to implemented a day night cycle and during the night I would like the player to be able to position lights. I would like to be able to lighten and dark to whole map to display the day and night cycle. Then lights would be a circle of light blocked by game entities such as walls, players, trees etc. How would I achieve and what is the standard way of achieving this?

USB Port not working for Ubuntu 14.04 LTS

I have recently installed Ubuntu 14.04 LTS on my system. But the usb port does not seem to be working. When I type lsusb in terminal, following is displayed on the screen: Bus 002 Device 114: ID 0951:1665 Kingston Technology Bus 002 Device 004: ID 413c:2106 Dell Computer Corp. Dell QuietKey Keyboard Bus 002 Device 003: ID 04ca:0062 Lite-On Technology Corp. Bus 002 Device 002: ID 8087:0020 Intel Corp. Integrated Rate Matching Hub Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub Bus 001 Device 002: ID 8087:0020 Intel Corp. Integrated Rate Matching Hub Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub. However the disk utility shows no media. Kindly help me on this. Suggestions will be appreciated.

Point and click synonym replacement in text area with Javascript

I am trying to create a site that will allow you to type a sentence or passage of text, then click on words to bring up a list of synonyms (from an online API) and possibly authorized abbreviations from a list that I provide, then once clicked on it would replace that word with the word that was clicked on. It would function kind of like After the Deadline or a Javascript based spell checker. Are there any libraries set up to make something like this easy, or what kind of Javascript do I need to be looking at? Are there any tutorials or examples for this kind of thing? I am aware that the source code for After the Deadline is available, but I only need a small portion of their technology, not all of the actual grammar and spelling check technology.
