This is a bundled patch release for Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center.  Here are the key features of the Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center 12c update 1 : Oracle VM SPARC Server Pool HA Policy  Automatically Upgrade from Ops Center 11g update 3 and Ops Center 12c  Oracle Linux 5.8 and 6.x Support  Oracle VM SPARC IaaS (Virtual Datacenters) WANBoot Improvements with OBP Handling Enhancements SPARC SuperCluster Support Stability fixes This new release contains significant enhancements in the update provisioning, bare metal OS provisioning, shared storage management, cloud/virtual datacenter, and networking management sections of the product.  With this update, customers can achieve better handling of ASR faults, add networks and storage to virtual guests more easily, understand IPMP and VLAN configurations better, get a more robust LDAP integration, get  virtualization aware firmware patching, and observe improved product performance across the board.  Customers can now accelerate Oracle VM SPARC and T4 deployments into production . Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center 11g and Ops Center 12c customers will now notice the availability of new product update under the Administration tab within the  Browser User Interface (BUI) .  Upgrade process is explained in detail within the Ops Center Administration Guide under “Chapter 10: Upgrading”.  Please be sure to read over that chapter and the Release Notes before upgrading.  During the week of July 9th,  the full download of the product will be available from the Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center download website.  Based on the customer feedback, we have changed the updates to include the entire product. • Best Practices - Core allocation

  This post is one of a series of "best practices" notes for Oracle VM Server for SPARC (also called Logical Domains) Introduction SPARC T-series servers currently have up to 4 CPU sockets, each of which has up to 8 or (on SPARC T3) 16 CPU cores, while each CPU core has 8 threads, for a maximum of 512 dispatchable CPUs. The defining feature of Oracle VM Server for SPARC is that each domain is assigned CPU threads or cores for its exclusive use. This avoids the overhead of software-based time-slicing and emulation (or binary rewriting) of system state-changing privileged instructions used in traditional hypervisors. To create a domain, administrators specify either the number of CPU threads or cores that the domain will own, as well as its memory and I/O resources. When CPU resources are assigned at the individual thread level, the logical domains constraint manager attempts to assign threads from the same cores to a domain, and avoid "split core" situations where the same CPU core is used by multiple domains. Sometimes this is unavoidable, especially when domains are allocated and deallocated CPUs in small increments. Why split cores can matter Split core allocations can silenty reduce performance because multiple domains with different address spaces and memory contents are sharing the core's Level 1 cache (L1$). This is called false cache sharing since even identical memory addresses from different domains must point to different locations in RAM. The effect of this is increased contention for the cache, and higher memory latency for each domain using that core. The degree of performance impact can be widely variable. For applications with very small memory working sets, and with I/O bound or low-CPU utilization workloads, it may not matter at all: all machines wait for work at the same speed. If the domains have substantial workloads, or are critical to performance then this can have an important impact: This blog entry was inspired by a customer issue in which one CPU core was split among 3 domains, one of which was the control and service domain. The reported problem was increased I/O latency in guest domains, but the root cause might be higher latency servicing the I/O requests due to the control domain being slowed down. What to do about it Split core situations are easily avoided. In most cases the logical domain constraint manager will avoid it without any administrative action, but it can be entirely prevented by doing one of the several actions: Assign virtual CPUs in multiples of 8 - the number of threads per core. For example: ldm set-vcpu 8 mydomain or ldm add-vcpu 24 mydomain. Each domain will then be allocated on a core boundary. Use the whole core constraint when assigning CPU resources. This allocates CPUs in increments of entire cores instead of virtual CPU threads. The equivalent of the above commands would be ldm set-core 1 mydomain or ldm add-core 3 mydomain. Older syntax does the same thing by adding the -c flag to the add-vcpu, rm-vcpu and set-vcpu commands, but the new syntax is recommended. When whole core allocation is used an attempt to add cores to a domain fails if there aren't enough completely empty cores to satisfy the request. Don't obsess: - if the workloads have minimal CPU requirements and don't need anywhere near a full CPU core, then don't worry about it. If you have low utilization workloads being consolidated from older machines onto a current T-series, then there's no need to worry about this or to assign an entire core to domains that will never use that much capacity. In any case, make sure the most important domains have their own CPU cores, in particular the control domain and any I/O or service domain, and of course any important guests. Summary Split core CPU allocation to domains can potentially have an impact on performance, but the logical domains manager tends to prevent this situation, and it can be completely and simply avoided by allocating virtual CPUs on core boundaries.

• Strategies for invoking subclass methods on generic objects

  I've run into this issue in a number of places and have solved it a bunch of different ways but looking for other solutions or opinions on how to address. The scenario is when you have a collection of objects all based off of the same superclass but you want to perform certain actions based only on instances of some of the subclasses. One contrived example of this might be an HTML document made up of elements. You could have a superclass named HTMLELement and subclasses of Headings, Paragraphs, Images, Comments, etc. To invoke a common action across all of the objects you declare a virtual method in the superclass and specific implementations in all of the subclasses. So to render the document you could loop all of the different objects in the document and call a common Render() method on each instance. It's the case where again using the same generic objects in the collection I want to perform different actions for instances of specific subclass (or set of subclasses). For example (an remember this is just an example) when iterating over the collection, elements with external links need to be downloaded (e.g. JS, CSS, images) and some might require additional parsing (JS, CSS). What's the best way to handle those special cases. Some of the strategies I've used or seen used include: Virtual methods in the base class. So in the base class you have a virtual LoadExternalContent() method that does nothing and then override it in the specific subclasses that need to implement it. The benefit being that in the calling code there is no object testing you send the same message to each object and let most of them ignore it. Two downsides that I can think of. First it can make the base class very cluttered with methods that have nothing to do with most of the hierarchy. Second it assumes all of the work can be done in the called method and doesn't handle the case where there might be additional context specific actions in the calling code (i.e. you want to do something in the UI and not the model). Have methods on the class to uniquely identify the objects. This could include methods like ClassName() which return a string with the class name or other return values like enums or booleans (IsImage()). The benefit is that the calling code can use if or switch statements to filter objects to perform class specific actions. The downside is that for every new class you need to implement these methods and can look cluttered. Also performance could be less than some of the other options. Use language features to identify objects. This includes reflection and language operators to identify the objects. For example in C# there is the is operator that returns true if the instance matches the specified class. The benefit is no additional code to implement in your object hierarchy. The only downside seems to be the lack of using something like a switch statement and the fact that your calling code is a little more cluttered. Are there other strategies I am missing? Thoughts on best approaches?

• Getting Started with Cloud Computing

  You’ve likely heard about how Office 365 and Windows Intune are great applications to get you started with Cloud Computing. Many of you emailed me asking for more info on what Cloud Computing is, including the distinction between "Public Cloud" and "Private Cloud". I want to address these questions and help you get started. Let's begin with a brief set of definitions and some places to find more info; however, an excellent place where you can always learn more about Cloud Computing is the Microsoft Virtual Academy. Public Cloud computing means that the infrastructure to run and manage the applications users are taking advantage of is run by someone else and not you. In other words, you do not buy the hardware or software to run your email or other services being used in your organization – that is done by someone else. Users simply connect to these services from their computers and you pay a monthly subscription fee for each user that is taking advantage of the service. Examples of Public Cloud services include Office 365, Windows Intune, Microsoft Dynamics CRM Online, Hotmail, and others. Private Cloud computing generally means that the hardware and software to run services used by your organization is run on your premises, with the ability for business groups to self-provision the services they need based on rules established by the IT department. Generally, Private Cloud implementations today are found in larger organizations but they are also viable for small and medium-sized businesses since they generally allow an automation of services and reduction in IT workloads when properly implemented. Having the right management tools, like System Center 2012, to implement and operate Private Cloud is important in order to be successful. So – how do you get started? The first step is to determine what makes the most sense to your organization. The nice thing is that you do not need to pick Public or Private Cloud – you can use elements of both where it makes sense for your business – the choice is yours. When you are ready to try and purchase Public Cloud technologies, the Microsoft Volume Licensing web site is a good place to find links to each of the online services. In particular, if you are interested in a trial for each service, you can visit the following pages: Office 365, CRM Online, Windows Intune, and Windows Azure. For Private Cloud technologies, start with some of the courses on Microsoft Virtual Academy and then download and install the Microsoft Private Cloud technologies including Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V and System Center 2012 in your own environment and take it for a spin. Also, keep up to date with the Canadian IT Pro blog to learn about events Microsoft is delivering such as the IT Virtualization Boot Camps and more to get you started with these technologies hands on. This machine has 3 physical NICs: One for Internet One for Internal Network One for Wireless Network All 3 have their respective Virtual Networks in Hyper-V, and I have an extra Private virutal machine network for a DMZ Network. If I try to ping a machine at the Perimiter network or the Wireless network, it doesn't get routed back to Forefront, and it's the default gateway on all Networks. • Need information regarding Ubuntu for Android

  As far as I understand, Ubuntu for Android is not the same as Actual Ubuntu in Desktops. So I am confusing both with each other. Please enlighten me on this. Could Ubuntu on Android run 32bit softwares same as the PC versions do? Or it is just the ARM version that would not be able to run the existing PC version softwares? If it is ARM now, would it be a 32 or 64 bit version in future?(Ofcourse if the mobile device architecture supports it). • Empathy chat notification

  I am using Empathy IM Client for my google hosted mail domain on 9.04, 9.10, 10.04 desktops. I could able to chat from the google mail chat to Empathy and I have set empathy notification to get notified when a message is received and it pops up(not always, don't no why). Whenever it pops up, it show the complete message of the sender which I don't like/want the message to be revealed to everyone whoever looks at my desktop.   I work at a small Web Dev firm, and have been handling all the PHP/MySQL/etc. for a while. I'm looking at improving our practices to allow for easier collaboration as we grow. Some things I have in mind are: Implementing a versioning system (source control) Coding standards for the team (unless mandated by a certain framework, etc.) Enforcing a common directory structure for our Desktops (for backup purposes, etc.) Web-based task/project/time/file/password/contact management and collaboration app(we've tried a bunch; I may just create one) What do more experienced developers view as necessary first steps in this area? Do you recommend any books? One thing to consider is that the bulk of our daily tasks involve maintenance and adding minor functionality rather than new projects, and the team size will be between 3 and 5. I just found a related question about teams that will be expanding from a solo developer.

• Did "sudo dconf reset -f /org/compiz". Now ccsm settings ignored

  I executed: sudo dconf reset -f /org/compiz Now changing settings in CompizConfig Settings Manager (ccsm) has no effect. For example, changing the number of desktops has no effect. I tried purging and reinstalling ccsm but it didn't help. Incidentally, where is the documentation for this sort of thing (which documentation specifies where Unity and Compiz store config settings?)? And where does dconf store things? And where is dconf's documentation? http://dag.wieers.com/home-made/dconf/dconf.1.html says nothing about the 'reset' command, and it says it stores things in /var/log/dconf, but nothing was there. Are there two things named 'dconf'? I would actually like to just put things back to where they were before I executed sudo dconf reset. I have a backup of my hard drive available, I just need to know which files to rollback. I tried rolling back the .config, .gconf, and .cache directories, to no avail. I'm using 12.04.

  I installed ubuntu 13.10 in asus k45vd laptop. sometimes when I'm working with my laptop I see dashes all over my screen(showing them takes maybe less than one secconds so it's difficult to take screenshot.) This problem just is in unity in other desktops which I installed like xfce4, kde, gnome-shell there isn't this problem. in ubuntu 13.04 there was this problem in my laptop too, and I tested ubuntu in another laptop asus k55vd there is this problem in that laptop too. I thought this a unity bug in asus kxxvd series! is there any solution for this problem?

• how to set different wallpapers in ubuntu workspaces

  I'm having an issues trying to customize ubuntu workspaces in the gnome environment. Assuming the default four workspaces aka desktops, how can one have a different wallpaper for each one? When I go to an individual workspace to set its wallpaper, all of the workspaces use it. So if I set: wallpaper B on workspace 2 wallpaper C on workspace 3 What will happen is that all the workspaces will default to the last wallpaper set no matter which workspace it was set in. What's even weirder is that the very first wallpaper set upon using it for the very first time is what shows up when i call up the Workspaces tool. Even though once I settle upon a workspace, no matter which one, the original wallpaper disappears and the last wallpaper set is the one that always shows up.

  I'm looking for a utility that helps me (and my colleagues) to archive documents in a systematic manner (Like Zeitgeist but permanent). The utility have to clean-out old document from desktops and store them on a server (as automatic as possible and consistent) maybe from just a few locations (Document directory) Documents shall be stored on cheap large media for many years to come - hard disk and file system maybe? Easy to maintain and manage for a small organization. Documents have to be easy to find and restore One systematic manner could be a directory-structure by year, month, user or user, year, month. Its a plus if documents could be linked to a project, if documents could be search-able and if document could also be mail, IM-discussions not only OpenOffice traditional documents. Any ideas?

• Firefox zombie process problem

  When I start Firefox a Firefox zombie process starts sometimes (not always) and then goes away after a few seconds (stays sometimes until firefox is closed). This problem occurs with four computers (2 laptops and 2 desktops running ubuntu 10.04, 11.10, precise beta 1 and beta 2) I also have this same problem with other distros like Fedora 16, Linux mint 12, Debian 6 and Arch Linux. Thunderbird is also affected by this zombie process problem. Firefox safe mode does NOT help! Can someone help me to fix this problem? • Using External Monitor with Laptop Monitor as separate monitors

  I am trying to use 32"LCD monitor with my ubuntu 10.10 installation. I am trying to use my laptop screen and external monitor at the same time but having two separate desktops. I also want to use my laptop with 1280x800 resolution and external one with 1920 x 1080 using VGA. However, ubuntu sees my external LCD as a CRT and provide 13....x... resolution at the best not above. My graphics card driver is Nvidia 270.... driver. Is ubuntu capable of using two monitors separately or should i give up? Thank you

• kubuntu wallpaper settings disappear

  To render my system useable after upgrading to 11.10, I had to abandon gnome and install the KDE window manager. This is mostly fine, but the desktop wallpaper slideshow works for a few minutes and then gets reset to the default (fixed kubuntu splash background). I can start up the slideshow again by right-clicking on the background and re-entering all the Desktop Settings, but then it just disappears again after a while. What could be causing this? Oops!   What I failed to realize was that KDE apparently uses an independent wallpaper setting for each desktop. I have 12, so some were set to the slideshow but others were still set to the default. Being accustomed to one common wallpaper setting for all desktops, I misinterpreted this as a global reset. Sorry!

• Jupiter seems to break multimonitor setup

  If Jupiter is in the startup my multimonitor setup will fail. Instead of two separate desktops the monitors will be mirrored, one over the other with the smaller notebook-desktop in the larger screen: After each new log-in I have to reset the Display settings in the "System Settings..." dialogue to two not mirrored screens, the changes don't seem to be saved. Given the the entry from xsession-errors /usr/lib/jupiter/scripts/resolutions: line 42: /var/jupiter/available_resolutions_LVDS: Permission denied I assumed that it's coming from Jupiter. Infact, if Jupiter is removed as startup application the desktop settings are fine. Any idea how to solve that issue?

• AGPL License - does it apply in this scanerio?

  There is an AGPLv3 based software (Client) that makes web service calls (using SOAP) to another software (Server - commercial, cloud based). There is no common code or any connection whatsoever between these two except for the web service calls being made. My questions - Does the Server need to be AGPL too? I guess not - but would like to confirm. Let us say the end point URL for the Server can be configured on the Client side (by editing an XML file) to connect it to different Servers (again, there is no connection other than the webservice calls being made) does it require any of these Servers being AGPL? Are there any issues in running the Client as a DLL that is loaded by other commercial applications on users' desktops? Does it require these other applications also to be AGPL? Appreciate your quick response. Pluto!

• Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Realtek RTL8192E Problems

  My wifi is not working. I have tried ndiswrapper with the XP driver but that still did not work. Please explain to me in layman's terms. I can run commands so if you tell me exactly what to put, i will put it. Basically, ubuntu is not showing a wireless networks option and when I ran some command yesterday it said the driver was UNCLAIMED. Please help. This is a wintec card with realtek rtl8192E chip on it. It is a desktop computer. On a 20gb partition, other 60gb is for windows(yeah its an old desktop). Use windows installer to install ubuntu(this is one of the dell desktops that wont boot ubuntu from disk). So any help is appreciated and I would like to get this done THIS weekend.

• Ubuntu 12.04 LTS x86_64 sound artifacts when scrolling with firefox

  I've been using Ubuntu since the 10.04 LTS version and i have a sound problem that still remain in my fresh install of the 12.04 LTS AMD64 version. This install has been performed by formatting the / partition and my documents were kept safe in the separated /home partition. The problem : When i listen to a audio or video source while browsing the web with Firefox, I have some sound artifacts when i'm scrolling and stops when i'm not doing it. This happens when i'm doing X11 related actions too, such as switching between virtuals desktops. Computer configuration of my laptop : - Ubuntu 12.04 LTS AMD64 - Plantronic USB Headphones - Intel HDA Audio sound card (laptop) with SigmaTel STAC9200 chip - AlsaMixer v 1.0.25 - Nvidia GeForce 7950 GTX with Nvidia 295.40 driver Any advices are welcome here :) Note : This is my first post on AskUbuntu.

• Xubuntu 14.04 black screen after monitor off/on

  I have a HP desktop machine with Ubuntu 14.04, with also Xubuntu and Gnome desktops installed. I mostly use the Xubuntu session. When using the Xubuntu session, when I power off my monitor, and power it back on, the screen stays black and I cannot do any work. With ctrl-alt-f6 I can open another virtual terminal, and then the screen works again, but if I to go back to the desktop session with ctrl-alt-f7, all I have is a black screen. But, if I login to Unity (the Ubuntu default session), or to Gnome, and turn the monitor off and back on, everything works ok. Also, if I log out, and while in the lightdm greeter, turn the monitor off and back on, everything works ok. What could be the cause for this, and how to fix this?
