• Can KVM roll back changes to Virtual Disks automatically?

  I'm currently using VirtualBox on my Linux server to run a small Windows guest OS. I've configured its main virtual hard drive as what VBox calls "Immutable" - meaning that any changes to it are written into a differencing image that is discarded when the system reboots. Can KVM do something similar? I've read about snapshots via "savevm", "loadvm" but I believe that's saved states, not differencing images. What I ultimately want is a VM with two drives: one reverts on each reboot, one keeps its changes. Ideally, the unchangeable drive image should be stored with only read access granted to the user running KVM.

• Can a virtual mikrotik box bridge a hyper-v internal network with a hyper-v external network?

  I am trying to set up a Mikrotik router as a transparent firewall on my network. I got the machine working on a hardware MT box, but my boss wants the MT virtualized. I have been trying the set up where my virtual windows box talks to the Mikrotik via private or internal network on the Hyper-V host. I can get the two machines to talk, but as soon as I set up a bridge on the MT, all traffic ceases between the two. Is it possible to create a bridge for this purpose (having the MT silently in front of my firewalled server)? I could really use some help.

• How do I access files inside a Wubi virtual ext4 Ubuntu partition from within Windows?

  I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 using Wubi on a PC that has Windows XP and Windows 7 installed. I was working in it for a while and everything is just fine. However, when I booted back into Windows 7, I couldn't figure out a way to access the files I had created or downloaded into the Ubuntu partition. They're in a virtual disk called root.disk in my C:\ubuntu\disks. Is there a way I can mount this vhd into Windows or at least browse the contents and extract what I need?

  Hi I am looking into Identity managment in our environment. We currently use Active Directory and Sun's Enterprise Directory server (6.3). I was wondering if I used the Virtual Directory Server of the Enterprise Directory server, would we be able to point the vCenter clients to this Directory service for authentication and authorization rather than at the AD source. The reason for this is that we have more users we want to add to the management role of this server but not all are in AD, a fair number are in the Sun LDAP v3. directory. Thanks in advance Ian

  I am running vsftpd with Virtual Users (managed through a MySQL db). Each users home/default directory is owned by vsftpd:vsftpd. I need to give a user read/write permissions to some website files, owned by apache:apache so they can make some changes. I did a bind mount for the web directory to a directory in the ftp user's home/default directory. When logging in, the user is not able to write to the web folder, unless I set files to 777. Is it possible to set this up with making the directory and it's files 777? The web directory needs to be apache:apache in order for apache to work with it.

• Are there any tools for monitoring individual Apache virtual hosts in real-time?

  I'm looking for a way to monitor and record Apache traffic, separated by virtual host. I am currently using Munin to capture this and other data for the entire server however I can't seem to find a way to do this by vhost. This link describes using a module called mod_watch which is apparently no longer in development: http://www.freshnet.org/wordpress/2007/03/08/monitoring-apaches-virtualhost-with-munin/ The file that is listed as being compatible with Apache 2.x is reported to have problems with missing vhosts an reporting data correctly. Does anyone know of a reliable way to determine real-time traffic per vhost? If I can find this it should be easy enough to write a new Munin plugin.

• Running OpenVZ virtual servers within a Xen XCP vritual server? Bad practice?

  I have a 1 server with 8GB RAM and 2xQuadcore Processors. It currently has the Xen XCP installed on it, and centos6.2 x64 running on a virtual machine. I have a server control panel software that I want to use and it allows the administration via a web interface for Openvz machines. My questions are: Would this be considered bad practice? Would there be a big performance hit? Should I avoid this all together or am I going about it all wrong? Thank you in advance.

• Any good resources on setting up an ubuntu virtual machine for web development?

  I'm currently on my placement year at uni with 4 months left. Before working at my current place, I have not used a nix environment for web development and have used WAMP. Over the past year I have found some very interesting new tech that requires a bit more than my shared hosting even to play with (eg node.js, RoR 3). At work we use a Virtual Machine for development, but that's all been set up and configured to match the live servers, and is managed with a Puppet server. Are there any really good resources for setting up and configuring an Ubuntu VM as a web server? Work currently uses Ubuntu so I would assume this is a good OS to use. I do of course know how to use google, but the noise ratio is just too big, so thought I'd ask here, as I know many of you will have a ton of bookmarks. Cheers.

So is this? /etc/apache2/sites-available/www.example.com better than this? /etc/apache2/sites-available/example.com I would assume I'd need to a2ensite either www.example.com or example.com. [duplicate] 5 answers How can I know if my provider is giving me a dedicated physical server or if I'm getting virtual servers? The provider is from an other country so I don't have the chance to go and see the servers by myself, all of them have linux and they're managed by SSH. All the hire has been done by internet or phone. Are there any commands, dirs to analyze or a way to get this info? They of course tell me that the servers are physical, but when they make some support or hardware/software upgrade or that kind of stuff doesn't take a long. For example, when I ask for a new one with specific requirements at the end they give me more infrastructure than the one I asked for. Of course no one gives extra things without an extra price.   I am attempting to pull some information from my tnsnames file using regex. I started with the following pattern: MYSCHEMA *? = *?[\W\w\S\s]*\(HOST *?= *?(?<host>\w+\s?)\)\s?\(PORT *?= *?(?<port>\d+)\s?\)[\W\w\S\s]*\(SERVICE_NAME *?= *?(?<servicename>\w+)\s?\) which worked fine when MYSCHEMA was the only schema in the file, but when there are other schemas listed after MYSCHEMA it matches all the way to the last schema. I have since created a new pattern: MYSCHEMA *=\s*\(DESCRIPTION =\s*\(ADDRESS *= *\(PROTOCOL *= *TCP\)\(HOST *= *(?<host>\w+)\)\(PORT *= *(?<port>\d+)\)\)\s*\(CONNECT_DATA *=\s*(?<serverdedicated>\(SERVER *= *DEDICATED\))\s*\(SERVICE_NAME *= *(?<servicename>[\w\.]+) *\)\s*\)\s*\) This pattern matches MYSCHEMA only, but I had to add every element that appeared in MYSCHEMA entry, and it won't match MYOTHERSCHEMA if it does not contain all the same elements. Ideally, I'd like a pattern that matches MYSCHEMA entry only, and captures HOST, PORT and SERVICE NAME, and optionally (SERVER = DEDICATED) (which I didn't have in the first pattern) to named groups. This is my code. What I'm doing wrong here? Changing entity properties works fine. Is it a normal behavior, or I made a mistake somewhere?

• VirtualBox Ubuntu Server with DNS

  I just want to have a local server inside my VirtualBox that offers dns functionality like www.example.local = 127.0.0.1 . Host: Ubuntu 11.10, Guest: Ubuntu 10.10 On my server I can already ping www.example.local - so I configured my virtual host correctly. Question is, how can I address www.example.local from outside my VirtualBox? I searched Google and askubuntu and found dnsmasq. I installed dnsmasq on my server and followed all steps on help.ubuntu. On my host system I've set 192.168.178.91 to the list of dns servers (192.168.178.91 is the IP address of my local server which uses a bridged network adapter). Thing is, I still cannot ping (or connect to) my example.local virtual host. It gives me an unknown host response. How can I set up my DNS server correctly?

• Web Hosting Backup/Disaster Recovery Plan - Which Company?

  I've been asked to look after consolidating all of our various company websites onto one host and also provide a disaster recover plan in case the chosen host goes down/out of business/etc. We're most likely going to go with HostGator as our chosen host, however, I'm not sure who to pick for our backup host. HostGator uses cPanel and has the functionality to provide regular full (ie: including configuration) backups of all the sites we host. Ideally I'm looking for a solution where we can provide these backups to another company and within a short period of time they restore all the sites onto their servers and we're back up and running. The whole disaster recover process has to be fairly straight forward from the point of view of what we need to do in case I am unavailable to assist in the disaster recovery process and no one else overly technical is available to assist (ie: take these backup files, send them to this company, and ask them to do this). Any suggestions on which company would be a good choice for this backup solution would be highly appreciated. Thanks, Harry

  I saw a lot of recommendations claiming that for hibernation the swap partition/file must be at least as large as the main memory. This makes no sense to me. Lets assume I have 8 GB of main memory and 8 GB swap area and want to hibernate: case 1: I'm using 4 GB of virtual memory - 8 GB of swap is unnecessarily large. case 2: I'm using 8 GB of virtual memory - 8 GB of swap is just right. case 3: I'm using 12 GB of virtual memory - 8 GB of swap is too small. The outcome is: A swap area of size equal to the memory size is sufficient for hibernate IFF it doesn't get used for swapping at all. So what is the reason behind the claim that you need at least as much swap area as main memory for hibernate to work? I know that virtual memory gets used for caching too, and that the cache may be simply discarded, but what happens to hibernation if a program allocates 12 GB of virtual memory (given the above memory and swap sizes)?
