• How to speed up file transfer to/from Ubuntu Server 11.10 (wifi)

  I've been searching AU & elsewhere for the last day and a half. Haven't found an answer so I joined AU to ask for help. I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction. Ubuntu Server 11.10 Samba VSFTPD Windows 7 PC 2 MacBook Pro - Snow Leopard/Lion 1 iMac - Lion Wireless LAN using DLink DIR-655 Link Speed: 195 Mbit/s on Mac - 54Mbps on Windows ISP Connection: Cable - 20 down/3 up No Domain Controller. All machines are members of the same workgroup. No matter how I connect I can't get better than about 700K transfer rate up/down. Mac/PC, SMB/ftp, Domain Name/Local IP I've tried different user accounts and using different folders, different volumes on the server. Nothing seems to make a difference. 700K up/down. Period. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Alexander EDIT: Using sftp now and uploading seems to peak at 980k. After about 5 minutes into a 650MB file, downloading is at 1072k and climbing about 500b/s every ten seconds. If any of that matters... I was expecting a lot faster than 1Mb tx rate. Am I off base here? EDIT: From all I've read so far, perhaps the speed isn't that bad. I only installed Ubuntu out of boredom this past weekend. The trouble is, I like it. Guess it's time to ditch the wifi and run some Cat 5.

• Final Man vs. Machine Round of Jeopardy Unfolds; Watson Dominates

  The final round of IBM’s Watson against Ken Jenning and Brad Rutter ended last night with Watson coming out in a strong lead against its two human opponents. Read on to catch a video of the match and see just how quick Watson is on the draw. Watson tore through many of the answers, the little probability bar at the bottom of the screen denoting it was often 95%+ confident in its answers. Some of the more interesting stumbles were, like in the last matches, based on nuance. By far the biggest “What?” moment of the night, however, was when it answered the Daily Double question of “The New Yorker’s 1959 review of this said in its brevity and clarity, it is ‘unlike most such manuals, a book as well as a tool’”. • Installation taking a very long time, hangs at "Configuring bcmwl-kernel-source"

  I am installing Ubuntu 14.04(32-bit) on my laptop (Compaq Presario V2000), and after about 7 hours, it is still in Configuring bcmwl-kernel-source (i386) mode. The messages I read are as follows: ubuntu kernel: [22814.858163] ACPI: \_SB_.PCI0.LPC0.LPC0.ACAD: ACPI_NOTIFY_BUS_CHECK event: unsupported with the numbers in the square brackets increasing. I have had Windows XP professional on this laptop, and I am erasing it. I am not sure if I should turn off the laptop, and start all over again. About 4 years ago I installed Ubuntu on this laptop, and that was very fast. The only problem I encountered was my wireless, and could not make it to work, and switched back to Windows. I appreciate any comments regarding this installation taking such a long time. After 40 hours the installation was still in configuring mode with the following messages: ubuntu CRON[29329]: (root) CMD ( cd/ && run-part .. report /etc/cron-hourly) I did the following to check for errors: pressed ctrl-alt-f2. This time the system froze. I had no other choice but to turn off the laptop, and start all over again. The exact model of the laptop is "Compaq Presario V2069CL Notebook PC" with AMD processor.

• Reclaim Vertical UI Space by Moving Your Tabs to the Side in Firefox

  Are you looking for a way to move your tabs to the side in Firefox and gain access to more vertical UI space? The Vertical Tabs extension for Firefox lets you accomplish both in a matter of moments. As soon as you install the extension and restart Firefox the Tab Bar will be automatically converted into a shiny new Vertical Tabs Sidebar. All that you have to do is start enjoying the extra vertical UI space. Some things to keep in mind when using the extension are: You can easily adjust the width of the sidebar to suit your needs using the mouse (very nice!) • DNS and VPN issues

  I recently purchased a year contract for a KVM 512MB VPS running Ubuntu 11.04. I'm having some issues setting up some things on it though - two in particular that I just can't for the life of me figure out. Okay, so I'm trying to setup pptpd as my VPN for my iPhone and my Mac when I'm out on wireless networks. I'm able to login and the chap authenticates but that's as far as I get, no domains will resolve and end up loading forever, I uncommented ms-dns lines as someone had recommended to me and changed the DNS servers to Googles public ones with no luck, is there something I'm missing? (It's probably staring me in the face.) My second issue is that I have managed to setup LAMP but am having a problem with my domain, I have pointed the DNS at 123-reg to my VPS's IP and the 'www .' resolves properly, but when I try to go to the domain without the 'www .' I get the apache landing page ("The web server software is running but no content has been added, yet.") I'm pretty sure there's something I've gotta configure in Apache for the virtual host but I'm missing it. Apart from these minor set-backs I'm enjoying the low-level configuration options of having a VPS and love managing my own server. Thanks!

• 5 Ways Microsoft Can Improve the Windows 8 Start Screen

  After having used Windows 8 over the past few months, we’ve found a few ways Microsoft could immediately improve the Start Screen to make it less disorienting and more usable, not only for tablets but desktops and laptops as well. It’s safe to say that the one thing Windows 8 doesn’t lack is criticism. Since the Consumer Preview debuted in February, it has proven to be one of the most polarizing Windows releases ever. But regardless of whether you love or hate it, Windows 8 is where Microsoft’s venerable operating system is headed. Portable computing is here to stay and if the company is to survive, let alone remain relevant, it has to change, adapt, embrace, and extend. Perhaps the single most universally controversial change to Windows is Microsoft’s decision to remove the Start button (or orb, if you’ve moved beyond XP) and with it, what we know to be the Start Menu. In their place we now have a Start hot corner (a workable alternative) and the newly redesigned Metro Start Screen. The Start Screen is, if nothing else, different. Beyond a doubt, there has not been such a radical redesign of Windows’ Start functionality since it went to a two-column design with a nested “All Programs” menu in Windows XP. The Start Screen can be a little jarring because it requires users to not only relearn what they’ve known for nearly two decades but to also rethink the way they interact with Windows. However, the Start Screen maintains its core elements: a Start “menu”, a place for all installed programs (All apps), and a search pane. The Start Screen is attractive, clean, bold, and very imperfect. • Add a Real-Time Earth Wallpaper App to Ubuntu with xplanetFX

  Are you tired of the same old wallpaper on your Ubuntu desktop? Now you can go from blah to literally spacious, real-time styled views of Earth with the xplanetFX Wallpaper App for Linux. You can conveniently access the “file type” downloads, screenshots, and jump-to links all on the front page. For our example we downloaded the .deb setup file on our system. The setup file will need to download three additional files to complete the setup process. After those are downloaded all dependencies will have been met and you can complete the installation process. Once that is done you can find xplanetFX by going to the Accessories Section of your Ubuntu Menu. This is what the main control window looks like when you start xplanetFX for the first time. You should take a few moments to look through the various tabs and tweak the settings for items like location, screen resolution, timing, auto-start, etc. When you are done click on Execute and within a few moments your desktop will have a fresh new look! • Tabs Visual Manager Adds Thumbnailed Tab Switching to Chrome

  If you rock a bunch of tabs and sometimes need a little visual reminder to recall where you left a tab you’re looking for, Tabs Visual Manager thumbnails all your tabs for easy visual switching. Install Tabs Visual Manager, restart Chrome, and anytime you need to find a tab you can click on the Tabs Visual Manager icon in the toolbar. By default it opens a new tab with all your tab thumbnails, we found it was more convenient to switch it to pop-up mode (wherein it pops up a smaller menu from the icon itself instead of a whole new tab).   Much like the wildly popular book “Wicked” mixed up the good/bad dichotomy in the Wizard of Oz, “The Last Ring-Bearer” shows us the Mordor’s take on the Lord of the Rings. The work of a Russian paleontologist, Kirill Yeskov, “The Last Ring-Bearer” frames the conflict in the Lord of the Rings from the perspective of the citizens of Mordor. Salon magazine offers this summary, as part of their larger review: In Yeskov’s retelling, the wizard Gandalf is a war-monger intent on crushing the scientific and technological initiative of Mordor and its southern allies because science “destroys the harmony of the world and dries up the souls of men!” He’s in cahoots with the elves, who aim to become “masters of the world,” and turn Middle-earth into a “bad copy” of their magical homeland across the sea. • Give Chromium-Based Browser Desktop Notifications a Native System Look in Ubuntu

  Desktop notifications from Chromium-based browsers are an awesome feature, but they do not blend in well at all with the native system theming in Ubuntu. Now you can fix that small problem using the wonderful Chromify-OSD extension created by Marco Ceppi. Once you get the extension installed you can give it a quick test run using the link and information we have listed below. As you can see in the image above the new notification style looks absolutely wonderful. Chromify-OSD (Chrome Web Store) [via OMG! • Geek Chess: Nixie Tubes as Board Pieces [Video]

  We’ve seen some geeky chessboards in our day, but this board is a masterpiece of geekiness. Check out the video to see the Nixie tubes in action. Courtesy of a tinker named Tony, we find this delightfully analog and geeky chess set. He writes: This developed as a spinoff from the hardware and controllers I’m designing for a range of nixie clocks and watches as a ‘simple’ project that wouldn’t need much software to complete it. All visible parts are made from materials contemporary with Nixie technology and no modern plastics or resins are used anywhere in its’ consruction (other than the electronic components and PCBs). The board and pieces are machined from phenolic resin laminate and assembled using brass fittings. The brown base pieces have been filled and wiped with gold and silver engravers wax, giving a ‘worn gilding’ appearance. The displays are ex-Soviet Nixie gas display tubes, manufactured in the early 1980s. • Ubuntu 12.04 problem with E160 huawei - can't detect the device and freezing system

  I have just installed 12.04 and plugged in E160 and nothing happened - modem doesn't mount. I have found this solution : Ubuntu does not mount some Huawei devices due to bugs, problems etc. See if these work: 1st option: Connect the USB modem. After 10 seconds, type this in a terminal window: lsusb The output will be like this: Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub Bus 004 Device 004: ID 12d1:140b Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. Bus 004 Device 002: ID 413c:3016 Dell Computer Corp. I've tried to add a new connection but the system can't see my device in setup dialogue. Also I have noticed that when I open eg. terminal and try to type sth, the system freezes for a while..
