  • How to install debian oldstable from network?

    I use PXE debian installer and install it from the local network mirror. It only offers to install "squeeze - stable" despite of there are both squeeze and lenny on the mirror. How to force it to install oldstable (lenny)? When I use legacy network-boot installer, it offers both "oldstable - lenny" and "stable - squeeze", but when I use new one it only offers "stable - squeeze". Can the new installer install old Debian?

Main criteria is a GbE NICs (will be used for core routing/firewalling with managed GbE switches), DDR3 RAM capable, and multi-core/Intel Atom processor, in a 1U rack-mountable case or smaller. Axiomtek has the ideal product but I don't think they have retail channels.

  • Why can I view my site over a 3G connection but not through my wifi?

    So, I am sitting in my office with four computers on the same network and internet connection. Two of the computers can visit this particular website. Two of the computer get a message "Google Chrome could not find". I have tried FF and IE also with the same problem. I can view the site 90% of the time on two of the working computers although the site seems slow and sometimes I also get the same errors as the other two computers. I have flushed the DNS, reset the router, tested the site on other peoples computers with success. Is this likely to be a site issue, an ISP issue, a hosting issue? Any advice is greatly appreciated.   • Sysinternal's Process Explorer v14 doesn't show network activity

    The new version of Process Explorer shows network activity history, but it doesn't in one of my computers. This particular PC runs Windows XP SP3 and it has just been reformatted so everything is "fresh". I have even installed WinPCap and Microsoft Network monitor, in case some of these drivers were necessary, but the graph stays in 0. Any ideas why this could happen? I would ask in Sysinternal's forum, but I really don't want to register in yet another forum.

    In order to install gentoo, I need to connect to a university wireless internet network. It requires a username and password login/authentication. I'm wondering if anyone has any advice in terms of how to configure the internet connection. The Gentoo installation documentation recommends the use of net-setup, pppoe, pptp, dhcp and iwconfig. I can't figure out how to configure this connection, as the only way I understand is to select the network from a list and enter in authentication data from within a browser.

  • User not able to change permissions on folder in network share for Windows Server 2003

    I have a user that has rights to change permissions within a certain folder on a Windows Server 2003 network share. Although I grant this person the rights to change permission and ownership this person cannot change any permissions. The network share is also set to allow everyone full control. (I understand it is bad practice yet this is how it was first configured) Is there any reason why this domain user cannot modify permissions on the folder and files they create?

  • Ubuntu wired network disconnected

    I am not able to establish a wired network connection between two computers on which I just installed Ubuntu 10.04. I am new to this environment. Unlike in the Windows environment, where it happens by just connecting them with a cable, Ubuntu keeps flashing a notification saying "Wired network disconnected". Am I missing a driver or something? I am able to connect to the wi-fi router without issue. The wired connection is just not working.

  • Cannot reset an network interfaces without a reboot

    I have edited the /etc/network/interfaces file and I use the sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart. After restart, the eth1 interfaces don't setup properly. I need a hard reboot to enable this configuration. Meanwhile the command line hints: Running /etc/init.d/networking restart is deprecated because it may not enable again some interfaces. Am I using the run command to restart network interfaces? auto eth1 iface eth1 inet static address 192.168.1.87 netmask 255.255.255.0 gateway 192.168.1.1

  • My network drive disappears from Mac OS Finder

    I have recently bought a Netgear WNDR3800 router to use it in my home network. But just the same day I installed it, I noticed a strange behaviour of Finder and iTunes. Let me explain it further. There is a Synology DS111 NAS attached to that router and two Macs with Mac OS X Lion. One of them is connected by a cable and the second one wirelessly. Before I changed my router to the new one I mentioned above, Finder always used to display my NAS on its sidebar. So I could just click its network name to access shared folders existing on it. But after I installed WNDR3800, I can no longer access the NAS that way. It is no longer displayed. I always have to mount it manually by typing its IP address using the Finder's 'connect to server' option. The same NAS supports TimeMachine backups and has an inbuilt DLNA server. And the same situation here. I can't perform a backup because my NAS is no longer accessible in TimeMachine preferences. iTunes does not display it as well (as a multimedia server) even though it used to before I installed that router. What's important, everything works fine for a couple of minutes after I restart the router or the NAS. Or even when I change the NAS's IP address it becomes accessible again in Finder, TimeMachine and iTunes, but only for some time. Both the Mac computers I mentioned behave the same way. And all those issues have been taking place sice I installed that new router. Before I did that, everything had worked fine. My old router was Netgear WGR614v10. Would you be so kind to tell me what you think could possibly be the reason of that behaviour? What settings of the router should I look closer at? I'm not a network specialist, but is it possible that some network packets are blocked for some reason? I will be grateful for any clues you give me. Thank you.

    Hi, MS Word 2007 files have a property page for entering details like summary and title. This is displayed when you hover over the documents on Desktop. Now on my Windows XP SP2 computer, inside Windows Explorer, it shows the special properties for all such files from Desktop, but not from the Network Drives. This is a big problem when I have a large collection of Word documents all in one folder. How can I display these special properties (infotips) for documents in my network drives ? Thanks :)

  • Suspected network performance issue on VirtualBox Ubuntu guest on Win7 host

    I set up Ubuntu 12.04 in VirtualBox on the Win7 machine I was allocated on my new project. I am running Java, Eclipse, Tomcat to develop a large data-intensive application and I noticed that this application runs at half the speed of my colleague's identical machine, where he runs it all under Windows. I think I have narrowed down the performance issue to the network, after comparing and equalising all the Java VM settings with my colleague. Is there a ping test I can do or some other network diagnostic test to flag up any problems? To give some background, the network performance is confusing. Running a network speed test to my colleague's machine with iperf shows speeds of 6 Mb/s from my Ubuntu guest, and 90 Mb/s from the win7 host. Large downloads, e.g. the Java SDK, come down at about 1.2 MB/s on both the guest and the host. Pings are sub-1ms on the host, but 1.5ms on the guest. I also did a broadband speed test, and got 10Mb/s download speed on both, but the host has an upload speed of 10Mb/s but the guest only uploads at 3Mb/s. I've been trying to diagnose any MTU problems with ping -M do to identify any kind of packet fragmentation problem but it's progressing very slow because I don't have much experience in this area. From what I read on other people's networking issues with VB and Linux guests on Win7 hosts, I should be able to get the speed on the guest up to the same level as the host. I installed a fresh VM with Ubuntu again to see if I'd foobar'd it somehow, but I'm getting the same readings with iperf on the virgin installation.     Is there a way to use rdesktop or another Linux client to connect to a server that requires Network Level Authentication? From Windows Server 2008 R2 -- Control Panel -- System And Security -- System -- Allow Remote Access there is an option that says "Allow connections only from computers running Remote Desktop with Network Level Authentication". So with this enabled I can con not connect from Linux. I can connect from XP but you need SP3 and I had to edit a couple of things in the registry for it to work.
