• How do you pick what server setup you need?

  I recently started receiving pubsub data feed from etsy. It averages around 250 notifications per minute. But obviously, when the USA wakes up that spikes quite heavily. I want to be able to deal with those spikes (about 3 per day) but the rest of day is fine. What's the best method of getting the right server configuration. My current approach is to keep upgrading until the server stops dying... next leap is: Processor: AMD Phenom II X6-1055T HEXA Core RAM: 4GB DDR2 SDRAM HD1: SATA Drive (7,200 rpm) (+500 GB 7200 RPM SATA hard drive) HD2: SATA Backup Drive (+500 GB SATA (7,200 rpm)) OS: Linux OS (+CentOS 5 64-bit) Bandwidth: 6000GB Monthly Transfer (3000 in + 3000 out) (+100M uplink port) What's the best approach to working out what sort of server setup you need?

• preloading RSS contents in thunderbird, before actually reading them

  i have thunderbird 3.x, and i'm subscribed to several RSS feeds. How can I tell thunderbird to load/download any new RSS items in the background? The usual behavior with RSS feeds is that it download the headrs, or few introductory lines from the contents, but only when i'm clicking a feed item it starts loading "for real". I really want to receive the feeds and not to wait for them to load, the same way i receive emails in any email client - all messages are fully downloaded at once. there could be several reasons, BTW. - e.g. if i have short connection time, i'd rather connect, sync everything at once, and read it later. - or if i have a slow wifi connection, it's annoying to wait for each and every message, but the computer is idle while reading.. thanks

  I have a Synology NAS that is powered by linux at my house. I'm looking to set up a cron script to check a group of rss feeds and auto download new video podcasts to a shared folder. I can do most of the scripting, such as deleting files older than 3 weeks and the wget parts. But I'm not sure how to parse the rss feed and check dates to only grab the latest. I figured its best not to re-invent the wheel and surly someone out there has a command line rss downloader or some such script. Any ideas?

• FPS lags with new acer aspire 5755G

  The title is kind of self explanatory, as my new laptop lags and has FPS drops. For example my FPS in Starcraft 2 hovers around 20 and constantly drops to 1 with low settings when I know it should run smoothly in high settings. I've updated my Nvidia driver, and set the preferred global settings to the 'High-performance Nvidia processor'. Here are some screen shots.   I have recently taken over management of a server running centos and whm. It has several websites and domains running under reseller accounts. Email has always been on a server at our actual office. I have recently changed our email from our local email server to gapps for business (our local email server was pretty archaic). However, when any email is sent from the web server (such as wordpress etc) to our domain - it still routes it to the IP of our old email server. I am not very familiar with WHM or exim so don't really know how to address this. Email to other domains works fine and the gapps is working perfectly. Any help is much appreciated.

• Podcast online sync service

  I download and listen to podcasts on 2 different computers. I would like so somehow sync the metadata such that, when I subscribe to a feed it gets subscribed on my other computer also. When I've downloaded a podcast it gets marked as downloaded on the other machine also. Is there a software + webservice combination that will allow me to do this. That will save its doings to the cloud and update it also? My one machine is Windows and the other one Linux.

  I have 2 computers connected to a router and I have a DVB card in one of them. I want to use the one DVB card to feed both of them. I read about it and I know that I want to share the DVB adapter with the Internet Connection Sharing on the LAN network. But when I use the connection sharing, I lose my internet access I tried to use "Bridge Connection", but then I also lost my internet access too. Can any one tell me how to fix this problem? And how to view the channels (for example how to use the VLC)?

• Commercial template (theme) sellers which give license to resell the template?

  I came once across a website template seller which granted rights to resell the template to the buyer but forgot to bookmark it. All the commercial template vendors I know of (Template Monster, BoxedArt, Dreamtemplate..etc) don't allow this. Anyone knows of any sellers which allow this? Some of them allow you to resell the template if it's packaged for a different host software. For example, if I buy a website template, I am allowed to sell it as a WordPress or Joomla or Drupal theme. I am aware of public domain and free templates sites but I am not looking for those. I am talking about templates which are being sold.

• Help recovering lost text from a refreshed Chrome webpage (it was in the clipboard as well)? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Chrome: where is the location to save browse temporary files Ok, so here's what happened - and yes, it was pretty stupid by me: I wrote up and submitted a post on Stack Overflow It was not suited to be placed on Stack Overflow as someone pointed out to me, so I deleted the post (this was a few hours ago) I copied the text into a new question page on Super User, but didn't submit it yet I accidentally just refreshed the webpage that had the text, and the question has now been deleted from Stack Overflow I have Lazarus installed, however the Chrome version doesn't have many features and the text was not recoverable from there. I do not have a clipboard manager, but the text was copied to my clipboard - so is there any way to get this back (Windows 7)? Although the post on Stack Overflow was deleted, I suppose it would have existed in my cache - could I recover it from there? Would the post on Stack Overflow exist in an rss feed anywhere? Many thanks, and I hope I can find this - and I am sure that the solution will prove valuable for me (and others) in the not too distant future once again.

• Improve efficiency when using parallel to read from compressed stream

  Is another question extended from the previous one [1] I have a compressed file and stream them to feed into a python program, e.g. bzcat data.bz2 | parallel --no-notice -j16 --pipe python parse.py > result.txt The parse.py can read from stdin continusuoly and print to stdout My ec2 instance is 16 cores but from the top command it is showing 3 to 4 load average only. From the ps, I am seeing a lot of stuffs like.. sh -c 'dd bs=1 count=1 of=/tmp/7D_YxccfY7.chr 2>/dev/null'; I know I can improve using the -a in.txtto improve performance, but with my case I am streaming from bz2 (I cannot exact it since I don't have enought disk space) How to improve the efficiency for my case? • php returns junk characters at end of everything

  php appears to be adding junk characters to the end of everything it returns on a friend's site. I'm not an admin on the server but I'd like to give an informed complaint to get this fixed. The site is http://daytoncodebreakers.org. You can see some junk at the end of every page on the site (what appear to be question marks with something else in the middle). I originally thought this was a wordpress issue, but check out http://daytoncodebreakers.org/whereisini.php (which is just a call to phpinfo), and http://daytoncodebreakers.org/hello.php (which is just 'Hello World'). I'm not sure if this is the most appropriate site, but I think this is a server config issue, so I'm posting it here (rather than stackoverflow or superuser). Feel free to move it if want.

• VPS stops responding every now and again

  I have a Linode vps that I use to host some of my websites on. It's Ubuntu based and it's up to date in terms of all packages. I don't have any cron jobs scheduled or any automatic processes. I host a few (up to date) wordpress blogs there that have very little traffic altogether. Every day (at a different time) my server stops responding, I can't SSH to it, web access is getting timed out and it just dies until I reboot it through the Linode manager. On the linode dashboard I can see that the CPU is not very high (2-3%) Incoming/Outgoing traffic is on 0 and the IO count has a spike just before the server stops responding (SWAP IO is at 2k and IO Rate is at 5k). When I reboot the server everything is just fine. I'm trying to figure out a way to analyze what's going on at these random times where the server freezes up. How can I determine the problem?

• Is there any way to automatically prevent running out of memory?

  I am often running out of memory on my VPS ubuntu server. I wish there was a way to simply restart apache2 when it starts running out of memory, as that seems to solve the problem. Or am I just too lazy to fix the problem? I do have limited memory on the server... Okay, more information: I'm running apache2 prefork, here are my memory settings (i've been tweaking them...): StartServers 3 MinSpareServers 1 MaxSpareServers 5 MaxClients 150 MaxRequestsPerChild 1000 The VPS has 1 GB of ram, running ubuntu 11.04 32-bit. As for scripts, I have a wordpress network with 5 blogs, an install of AskBot (a python/django stackexchange clone), and an install of MediaWiki that isn't really used. There is also a homebrewed mp3 script that accesses the getid3 library to display information on lists of podcasts, and it seems to be throwing some php errors, not sure if that's the culprit...

• I use windows7 and am looking for a tool to help me tag/organize my bookmarks as well as my thoughts and projects.

  I've got my bookmarks in Chrome currently, and am prone to just bookmarking something if it contains any info I may need for the project I'm currently working on. I had found a way to tag them with delicious and then get an export from that into a wordpress test server (with the tags), having a post for each bookmark, but this proved to be a bit of a waste of time, as there's no way to organize it well. Ideally I'd like to find some sort of mind-mapper with a Prezi-like view, that does auto tagging, excerpting and allows me to notate things effectively. Does my dream tool even exist? I've usually got 20+ tags open all at once because there may be something open on each I need to see/know to make my current project work. It's frustrating. Though I'm on Win7, I'm interested to hear about any tools that are out there that work to take your existing bookmarks and help you organize them productively.

• Different color prompts for different machines when using terminal/ssh?

  Hi, I have 5 machines I constantly ssh into to do work. Its getting increasingly frustrating when I am issuing wrong commands on wrong boxes. Luckily I havent done anything bad yet. I wanted to know if there is any hack which I can hardcode which will display my prompt in different colors based on the machine I am ssh into? Such as blue for desktop1, purple for laptop, red for server etc? Is this possible? Currently I am using this command export PS1="\e[0;31m[\u@\h \W]\$ \e[m " taken from here http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/bash-shell-change-the-color-of-my-shell-prompt-under-linux-or-unix/ but it obviously doesnt work across ssh. Also, if you have any other cool bash tips for helping me ease my sight will be wonderful. • Controlling access to my API using SSH public key (not SSL)

  I have the challenge of implementing an API to be consumed by relatively non-technical clients -- pasting some sample code into their WordPress or homegrown PHP site is probably as much as we can ask. Asking them to install SSL on their servers ain't happening. So I am seeking a simple yet secure way to authenticate API clients. OAuth is the obvious solution, but I don't think it passes the "simple" test. Adding a client id and hashed secret as a parameter to the requests is closer -- it's not hard to do md5($secret . $client_id) or whatever the php would be. It seems to me that if client requests could use the same approach as SSH public keys (client gives us a key from their server(s) there should be some existing magic to make all of the subsequent transactions transparently work just as regular HTTP API requests. I am still working this out (obviously :-), so if I am being an idiot, it would be nice to know why. Thanks!

  I have a vmware VPS running Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise that has performance issues with MySQL. Every few minutes, MySQL stall for few seconds then responed to queries. I'm sure that my.ini need to be optimized, but unfortunately, I don't have any idea of my.ini configuration. • Where to start when setting up a gambling website [closed]

I am looking into building a gambling website, I have good HTML CSS and JavaScript skills but I do not know enough of the server side to actually build a backend for a gambling website. Firstly where would you start , what language , I work With Wordpress , so I understand php a little but not a lot . Would php be a good place to start . If so what framework would be able to scale if the number of users on the website increased . clearly I would like a backend where you could view 1. Users 2. • ipfw is blocking access to a script

  I need to figure out how to troubleshoot why ipfw is blocking my script. This script parses out some rss feeds over the net. I have about 10 different feed urls. About 5 or 6 of these urls are returning xml, the others are timing out. If I turn the firewall off, they will all work. The issue I'm having is that I have no idea what port I need to open for the urls that are timing out. Is there a command that will show me this?

• Can Apache be configured to specify more than one docroot per virtualhost?

  I have a vhost which specifies <VirtualHost *:80> DocumentRoot "/private/var/www/html/cms/sites/" ServerName localhost.com </VirtualHost> I would like to know if localhost.com can also point to /private/var/www/html/wordpress/. This seems like a no brainer but Apache is like black magic; these things are always possible. Anyway, I already know that I could specify a new ServerName entry and set a new docroot. The problem is, both directories need to be available as roots. If I need to provide more info, I will gladly do so.

• Ubuntu 10.04 Apache Configuration for Websites

  Looking at a basic Ubuntu 10.04 server setup, Apache points to /var/www for where to it looks for files to serve up. The default apache user is www. I'm just trying to set up a plain old WordPress blog. Should I just dump the files into /var/www/ as root or www? User www seems inconvenient since I won't log in as the user, but I guess I can chown the files in /var/www to www. Not that I would log in as root either, but what is the recommended user who should own the /var/www files? Thanks for the help.
