• PLesk Error: pmm-ras error (Error code = -6): during restore.. /tmp folder to increase?

  I had to re-install plesk on a centos 6 system after a crash. • Should EC2 server self register or have admin server

  I'm creating AWS servers using chef. I am also planning on enabling auto-scaling. While we have automatic monitoring setup already (server density or nagios etc), I was also going to setup the cloud watch alarm for the status check on the server. This led me down the path of trying to decide whether to install the ec2-command-line tools on the server itself (which then requires me to install java on the servers -- despite no other need for Java in our environment) or to possible have an "admin" box that will check periodically for servers and make sure they have their alarms set. I expect this paradigm to carry over to other things we want to configure (perhaps ensuring that termination protection is setup on production servers?). Any thoughts as to why to go one direction or another?

• What is the best package repository for Debian ?

  Hello everybody I have a question regarding packages repository in Debian (Lenny). A new server at rackspace cloud service comes with nothing (plain system) so i had to upgrade system and install all necessary packages by myself. But the problem is that default repositories does not provide newer versions of software i need (PHP is 5.2.6, comparing to 5.2.13). In CentOS i used to get all new packages from third-party sources, which works really well till now. I have talked to guys from rackspace about it and looks like they cant provide anything except kernel headers. And i dont really want to build from source. So, whats the way to get newer software ? Any good third party sources? Thanks.

• Joining an Active Directory domain using netdom

  I have a simple script to join an AD domain and rename the computer. When I execute these commands directly on the CLI, it works fine. When I execute the same via batch file, I get an error saying The network path was not found I am running as Administrator with full privileges. I have googled around microsoft forums but my case is unique because it works from the CLI and not from the batch file netdom join %%computername%% /domain:OPSCODEDEMO.COM /userd:Administrator /passwordd:xxx netdom renamecomputer %%computername%% /NewName:%hostname% /Force The environment is Windows 2k8 R2 SP1 running on Ninefold Cloud (Xenserver).

• Using ZeroC Middleware

  I'm currently looking at various middleware solutions that will allow me to create applications in a variety of languages which are able to communicate amongst each other. The ZeroC product suite seems ideal as it provides a language agnostic way of defining data and the services that operate on the data (via its ICE idl) and provides support for all the mainstream languages. It also appears to offer a lot of other things we'd want, such as load balancing, grid computing and managed deployment. However, my google-fu has let me down and I'm having trouble finding information from people who have used it to implements system. I'm looking for feedback from projects that use it, and what issues/successes they had. I'm also interested in feedback from projects that evaluated it and chose not to use it (and why).

What is the best way to get this done? Is there a secure and reliable service that will help me do this? This is fairly important and might be shared by upto 2 people at a time.   I have a programming contest coming up in about half a week, and I've been prepping :) I found a bunch of questions from this canadian competition, they're great practice: http://cemc.math.uwaterloo.ca/contests/computing/2009/stage2/day1.pdf I'm looking at problem B ("Dinner"). Any idea where to start? I can't really think of anything besides the naive approach (ie. trying all permutations) which would take too long to be a valid answer. Btw, the language there says c++ and pascal I think, but i don't care what language you use - I mean really all I want is a brief description of how to tackle the problem. Like "use X technique treating each programmer as a Y" or something :)

• how can I effect DNS Caching on PHP/Memcache application

  In a very high loaded Ubuntu/PHP web server I found that the PHP line: $memcache-connect("int-aws_ec2.memcached.myapp.net",11211); sometimes takes ~5 secs. Replacing the url with the ip address decreases the server load from ~20 to 0 My question is - where are the settings that effect the DNS caching for this? Is it in the server level or the memcache library ? How can I change it ? Additional info: Ubuntu 10.04 lucid PHP: 5.3.2-1ubuntu4.10 Apache/2.2.14 (Ubuntu) Amazon EC2 Even more info per Celada's comment: The DNS handling for the memcache server is done by scalr (the platform I use to manage the cloud resources). They have a client located on the instances and their own DNS servers. /etc/nsswitch.conf - hosts: files dns /etc/resolv.conf: nameserver 172.16.0.23 domain ec2.internal search ec2.internal The domain is not in hosts.conf To check if I run nscd I used /etc/init.d/nscd stop and received 'no such file' so i guess I dont run nscd. • On-the-fly lossless image compression

  I have an embedded application where an image scanner sends out a stream of 16-bit pixels that are later assembled to a grayscale image. As I need to both save this data locally and forward it to a network interface, I'd like to compress the data stream to reduce the required storage space and network bandwidth. Is there a simple algorithm that I can use to losslessly compress the pixel data? I first thought of computing the difference between two consecutive pixels and then encoding this difference with a Huffman code. Unfortunately, the pixels are unsigned 16-bit quantities so the difference can be anywhere in the range -65535 .. +65535 which leads to potentially huge codeword lengths. If a few really long codewords occur in a row, I'll run into buffer overflow problems.

• Providing high availability and failover using MySQL on EC2

  I would like to have a highly-available MySQL system, with automatic failover, running on Amazon EC2 instances. The standard approach to solving this is problem Heartbeat + DRBD, but I've found a lot of posts suggesting DRBD doesn't work on EC2, though none saying exactly why. Obviously, a serial heartbeat or distinct network is out of the question in the virtualised environment. It would also be good to have the different servers be in different availability zones, but we're getting into a much harder problem there. What are peoples' opinion on having a high uptime solution in "the cloud"?

• Bootstrapping in CloudFormation with Autoscale

  My CloudFormation template creates an autoscale group and bootstrap it with utility script /opt/aws/bin/cfn-init. When I remove the bootstrap part out of my template the, autoscale get created without any problem, but I add it the CloudFormation Stack fails and add line in /var/log/cloud-init.log : Error: AutoScalingGroupName does not specify any metadata The line above appens right after the following command : /opt/aws/bin/cfn-init --verbose --configsets orderedConfig --region us-east-1 --stack AS15 --resource AutoScalingGroupName --access-key XXXXXXXXXXXXX --secret-key XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Digging a little bit deeper, in cfn-init I added the following lines the point where it exit: from pprint import pprint pprint(vars(detail)) and I get the following trace when running the previous cfn-init command : {'_description': None, '_lastUpdated': datetime.datetime(2012, 7, 12, 14, 52, 42), '_logicalResourceId': u'AutoScalingGroupName', '_metadata': None, '_physicalResourceId': u'AS15-AutoScalingGroupName-HNPOXXXXXXXX', '_resourceStatus': u'CREATE_COMPLETE', '_resourceStatusReason': None, '_resourceType': u'AWS::AutoScaling::AutoScalingGroup', '_stackId': u'arn:aws:cloudformation:us-east-1:XXXXXXXXXXXXX:stack/AS15/XXXXXXXX-cc30-11e1-XXXXXX-XXXXXXXXXX', '_stackName': u'AS15'} As you can see, the metadata field is empty and that's the reason why it fails to create the stack. • Lan, vpn on Amazon EC2, how to?

  The problem is as follows: I have 2 windows2003 server instances running on the cloud. 1) How can I create a local area network from these 2 instances? 2) Assuming that I want to create a VPN network from these 2 instances, how do I do that? (I'm not very good in networking, therefor the above problem description might be incomplete or not very clear.) A detailed answer or clarification would be praised and appreciated! What I tried: 1) Setting up OpenVPN, but I got lost in the process. 2) Creating a VPN from windows2003 server in the following manner: on instance a): set up a dhcp server; set up an "accept income vpn" connection; with the followin tcp ip settings: obtain an ip from the dhcp server; on instance b): created a new vpn connection, tried to connect to intance A, using the instance A static IP but error 806 was thrown, something relate to a GRE protocol.

• Add a remote printer over ssh on OSX?

  I have a printer at my office that is connected to a local network and my linux box at work can see it on the network. However, it is not visible to the outside world. I was trying to figure out a way to add it on my MacAir and so far have found two options: 1) Using ssh tunnel via CLI: cat file.pdf | ssh user@linuxbox lpr. 2) With Chrome installed on the linux box, using the Google Cloud Print service on the remote box and automator on my MacAir I can add the printer to Cmnd+p dialog box I like the first method since it does not require Chrome be installed and the second one since it allows to use Cmnd+p inside all applications. I was wondering if there is a way to combine by using automator to run the first command line script. What about port forwarding? Is it possible to forward the remote CUPS 631 port to a local port and then add the printer normally? What other methods would you recommend?

• [java] Efficiency of while(true) ServerSocket Listen

  I am wondering if a typical while(true) ServerSocket listen loop takes an entire core to wait and accept a client connection (Even when implementing runnable and using Thread .start()) I am implementing a type of distributed computing cluster and each computer needs every core it has for computation. A Master node needs to communicate with these computers (invoking static methods that modify the algorithm's functioning). The reason I need to use sockets is due to the cross platform / cross language capabilities. In some cases, PHP will be invoking these java static methods. I used a java profiler (YourKit) and I can see my running ServerSocket listen thread and it never sleeps and it's always running. Is there a better approach to do what I want? Or, will the performance hit be negligible? Please, feel free to offer any suggestion if you can think of a better way (I've tried RMI, but it isn't supported cross-language. Thanks everyone

• Shortest-path algorithms which use a space-time tradeoff?

  I need to find shortest paths in an unweighted, undirected graph. There are algorithms which can find a shortest path between two nodes, but this can take time. There are also algorithms for computing shortest paths for all pairs of nodes in the graph, but storing such a lookup table would take lots of disk space. What I'm wondering: Is there an algorithm which offers a space-time tradeoff that's somewhere between these two extremes? In other words, is there a way to speed up a shortest-path search, while using less disk space than would be occupied by an all-pairs shortest-path table? I know there are ways to efficiently store lookup tables for this problem, and I already have a couple of ideas for speeding up shortest-path searches using precomputed data. But I don't want to reinvent the wheel if there's already some established algorithm that solves this problem.

Amongst other things, he pointed out how very simple computations can yield extremely complex behaviors. (He goes on to discuss his ambition for computing the entire physical universe. • Simple, manageable DNS on EC2?

  I'm working on a large network of servers sitting on EC2, and need a way for the servers to know about each other's locations in the cloud. I thought the simplest way would be to use DNS, because if I replace the EC2 instance, I simply update the DNS record, and the rest of the servers will know about it (with names like users.db.mysoft.com, routing.mysoft.com, cluster1.memcached.mysoft.com). I'm considering setting up a master DNS server on a micro/small instance to accommodate this. I'd preferably need something that's as simple as a key-value store (hostname - IP) into which the platform could remotely add/remove entries. Can I do this with BIND? Or is there a better solution?

  I am about to finish my B.Sc. in Applied Math. I started out in CS a few years back had a bit of a change of heart and decided to go the math route. Now that I am looking for career options finishing up and I'm just wonder how my Applied Math degree will look when applying for programming jobs. I have taken CS courses in C++/Java/C and done 2 semester of Scientific Computing with MATLAB/Mathematica and the like, so I feel like i at least know how to program.   All, I have a single Windows 2008 server running in Amazon's EC2 cloud. It's running a web application that is running fine and is accessible to the outside world. I need 3-5 developers to be able to work on database on the server, and was intending to accomplish this by setting up SSTP/RRAS on the server and letting them VPN in. This has been a bit of an ordeal due to the amount of server roles and messing with certificates that has been needed, but my VPN connection works now (all clients will be Windows 7). My problem is that when I use my VPN connection (from the client side) the server hangs - although not at any any consistent place, sometimes it's when I close the connection, some times when I'm making the connection). The only way that I've found to get it back is to reboot it from the Amazon management console. Thanks for any guidance. Duncan

• NFS Server in Java

  I search an implementation of a network (or distributed) file system like NFS in Java. The goal is to extend it and do some research stuff with it. On the web I found some implementation e.g. DJ NFS, but the open question is how mature and fast they are. Can anyone purpose a good starting point, has anyone experience with such things? P.S. I know Hadoop DFS and I used it for some projects, but Hadoop is not a good fit for the things I want to do here. --EDIT-- Hadoop is really focused on highly scalable, high throughput computing without the possibilities to overwrite parts of a file and so an. The goal is you could use the filesystem e.g. for user home directories. --EDIT-- More Details: The idea is to modify such a implementation so that the files are not stored directly on a local filesystem, but to apply data de-duplication.

• Best language to learn complementing java

  Hi all, I'm a somewhat experienced java ee developer, and I wish to complement my background by learning a newish language. I'm recently out of school where I did a ton of scientific computing and some functional programming, so I'm pretty comfortable with those families of languages. If at all possible, I'd like to pick a language with some market value, though I know this is tough to gauge. After snooping around a bit, the consensus seems to be one of Python/Ruby/Perl; how would each of these work with java in a web application environment, and in your opinion which complements it best? Any other suggestions for languages would also be welcome.

• Command line import of database using latin1 encoding

  I'm using a particular cloud hosting solution (one which i won't name) and they don't provide ssh access so i'm at a whim on how the database is dumped. I downloaded the dump which is packed into a tar.gz file. I discover that this file utilizes latin1 encoding. Which i don't get to specify the encoding for the host i'm using because i don't have SSH access or DB access. I try to import it via command line for my local development environment (mysql -uroot foodb < file.db) like i usually do with other databases but am having problems. Is it possible to import a database via command line by specifying which encoding (preferably latin1) before importing it? Or do i have to convert it to UTF8?
