  • How can I find out which processes on my computer are accessing the microphone?

    After reading this interesting Lifehacker post and reading the comments on the page, one person was wondering if it would be possible to use the Physical Device Object Names of other hardware such as the microphone to find out the names of processes using that device. I tried the same approach, but so far it only seems to work for the webcam. Is there any other way I could get this to work in Process Explorer? UPDATE: The Lifehacker post was about finding out which Windows process is currently using your webcam. This is how they went about doing it: Start Device Manager (WIN+R → "devmgmt.msc" → OK) Find your webcam among the list of devices (check under Imaging Devices) Open the properties window of the device and switch to the Details tab (Right click → Properties → Details) In the dropdown menu, select Physical Device Object Name and copy the string(Right click → Copy) Download Process Explorer Make sure you have opened Process Explorer in Administrator Mode(File → Show Details for All Processes) Hit CTRL+F and enter the string you copied earlier(it should be something like \Device\000000XX) Hit the Search button and you should see a list of processes using the webcam(if there are any)

  • Resuming downloads in Firefox

    Unfortunately, Firefox still has failed to add the option to resume downloads. I've ran into this problem SO MANY times, and in my previous searches I found posts saying Firefox was going to fix that. As of 3.6.3 they haven't. I just tried Free Download Manager (FDM), again, having the Firefox addon Flashgot use it. The download gets passed to FDM, and fails, giving the error message "access denied, invalid username or password." No password was required. The site I'm trying to get the file from is turbobit.net, which limits downloads speeds to 100kb/sec, and has a 59 second countdown before you get the link. I guess it's transparently using a password on their end. If I just download normally (save to disk) the download starts fine, but it fails after 30 minutes to 1 hour (always different), and my Wi-fi connection will stop briefly - and I have to start all over. So I will never be able to download a large file. I also tried DTA instead of FMD with Flashgot, and I get an "access denied" message in DTA. Again, I reloaded - waited the 59 seconds, and download w/Firefox, and the download starts fine. The failure message in the Firefox Downloads window is "source file at http... could not be read." Any help would be greatly appreciated. When is Firefox going to finally add the ability to resume downloads????? Is there some other software I haven't found using Google that will work?

  • ConfigMgr 2012 - How to automatically make updates available to computers without forcing them to be installed?

    I'm using System Center Configuration Manager 2012 with the Software Update Point feature; however, in this environment patching has to be strictly manual, because server reboots need to be approved and scheduled by different people; thus, I need to use ConfigMgr's SUP like I would use a plain WSUS server with auto-approval but with manual installation. I created some Automatic Deployment Rules to automatically download and deploy critical updates, and to have an installation dealine of "as soon as possible"; but then, I've also configured those rules to not do anything when the deadline is reached, and to not perform system restarts even if needed (see image). Also, I've configured the device collection to where those rules deploy updates to not have any valid maintencance window. However, I'm experiencing quite the opposite as what I was expecting: as soon as the new updates are processed by the ADRs, they get automatically installed on all systems by the Software Center, and the computers are subsequently restarted. Why is this happening? Am I getting something wrong or is just ConfigMgr 2012 not behaving like it should?

In Windows I can use Connectify Hotspot, which enables me to share the internet connection from the same wireless adapter as I am creating an access point on. As you can read on the technology overview page: Access Point mode allows you to create a hotspot using the same Wi-Fi card that you are using to access the Internet. How do I do this on Ubuntu?

  • How to disable my laptop's defective keyboard?

    I have an Alienware M17x R2, and after a couple years of use I started having problems with the keyboard: Intermittently, and without warning or apparent cause (even if I'm not touching the computer), the S key (and more recently the D key) will start firing incessant signals until I hit the offending key. I've been using a USB keyboard, which is conveniently exactly the right size to fit over the built-in keyboard without touching any buttons. However, even as I type the defective keyboard will fire its stream of signals. I have contacted Dell about this, twice in fact. The first time, I was just bluntly told that they don't ship replacement keyboards. The second time I was told that they did, but they were out of stock and they would contact me when they were in stock again. They haven't contacted me since. I can't seem to work out which device to disable in the device manager. Here's a screenshot of what I have: None of the keyboard devices have "Disable" in their context menus, only "Uninstall"... so you'll understand if I'm hesitant to try anything myself. Any advice on how to fix this?

  • Getting windows virtio mounted/installed for KVM

    There might be an easy answer to this. I have exhausted my search on google for a solution. Here's my problem. I need to get Windows working on a KVM vps with virtualizor CP. As I get into windows installation in VNC, there's the mandatory driver installation requirement, as HDD is in virtio. There seems to be 2 solutions: 1. Mount the virtio iso (http://alt.fedoraproject.org/pub/alt/virtio-win/latest/images/bin/) in the CD drive by unmounting Windows ISO and proceed with driver installation. 2. Create a secondary CD drive and mount the virtio iso there. Well, 1st step never seems to work. If I unload the Windows iso and load the virtio iso, it never reflects back in the VNC. Second step I have yet to be successfull. I try to create a second IDE CD ROM drive via virt-manager but the virtio (virtio-win-0.1-30.iso) iso is never listed in there, whereas i specially placed it in /var/lib/libvirt/images folder. Any suggestions on where I screwed up?

I used to login to a website (chess.com) but since a few days ago I get this message: The connection was reset The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading. The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments. If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection. If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web. This is the case in Firefox, and chrome. A friend of mine confirmed to me that the website is working fine and he could access it. And I can access many other websites and facing no issues except for this website. I tried switching the use TLS 1.0 option as suggested by someone but this didn't fix it. Can someone suggest a way to fix this issue?

    Hi, I am trying to create a RAS server in XP Pro. The idea is to log in to this server via a dialup connection. I have set up a new network connection via the New Connect Wizard in XP - according to this tutorial on techrepublic. I am sure that the modem and the connection is working, I have tested it. However, I want to monitor incoming network traffic on this connection. So I thought I would use Wireshark. The problem is that Wireshark does not list this incoming connection on the front page. It lists all my other network connections, ( e.g. my ethernet connection ) but not this one. Whats the best way to monitor traffic on this connection?

  • Bluetooth RFCOMM / SDP connection to a RS232 adapter in android

    Hello All, I am trying to use the Bluetooth Chat sample API app that google provides to connect to a bluetooth RS232 adapter hooked up to another device. Here is the app for reference: http://developer.android.com/resources/samples/BluetoothChat/index.html And here is the spec sheet for the RS232 connector just for reference: http://serialio.com/download/Docs/BlueSnap-guide-4.77_Commands.pdf Well the problem is that when I go to connect to the device with: mmSocket.connect(); (BluetoothSocket::connect()) I always get an IOException error thrown by the connect() method. When I do a toString on the exception I get "Service discovery failed". My question is mostly what are the cases that would cause an IOException to get thrown in the connect method? I know those are in the source somewhere but I don't know exactly how the java layer that you write apps in and the C/C++ layer that contains the actual stacks interface. I know that it uses the bluez bluetooth stack which is written in C/C++ but not sure how that ties into the java layer which is what I would think is throwing the exception. Any help on pointing me to where I can try to dissect this issue would be incredible. Also just to note I am able to pair with the RS232 adapter just fine but I am never able to actually connect. The Android API provides examples of using listenUsingRfcommWithServiceRecord() to set up a socket and createRfcommSocketToServiceRecord() to connect to that socket. I'm trying to connect to an embedded device with a BlueSMiRF Gold chip. My working Python code (using the PyBluez library), which I'd like to port to Android, is as follows: sock = bluetooth.BluetoothSocket(proto=bluetooth.RFCOMM) sock.connect((device_addr, 1)) return sock.makefile() ...so the service to connect to is simply defined as channel 1, without any SDP lookup. As the only documented mechanism I see in the Android API does SDP lookup of a UUID, I'm slightly at a loss. Using "sdptool browse" from my Linux host comes up empty, so I surmise that the chip in question simply lacks SDP support.

  • WCF app Deployed on Win7 Machine and get connection refused error

    I have created a Sync Framework application based on the following sample from microsoft and deployed it to a new Windows 7 machine for testing. The app runs ok but when I attempt to communicate I get the following error: Could not connect to http://localhost:8000/RelationalSyncContract/SqlSyncService/. TCP error code 10061: No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it 127.0.0.1:8000. I am wondering if there is something I am missing. This is my first experience using WCF and followed microsoft sample code. I have disabled the firewall and opened port 8000 for both TCP and UDP. Not sure what to look at next. I send a user/pw auth and get an OK reply (0x00), but as soon as I tell the proxy to connect to whichever ip:port, it gives me 0x01 (general error).     Let me first give an example. Imagine you have a single server running a JVM application. This server keeps a collection of N equations, once for each client: Client #1: 2x Client #2: 1 + y Client #3: z/4 This server includes an HTTP interface so that random visitors can type https://www.acme.com/client/3 int their browsers and see the latest evaluated result of z/4. The tricky part is that either the client or the server may change the variable value at any time, informing the other party immediately. More specifically, Client #3 - a C app - can initially tell the server that z = 20. An hour later that same client informs the server that z = 23. Likewise the server can later inform the client that z = 28. As caf pointed out in the comments, there can be a race condition when values are changed by the client and server simultaneously. The solution would be for both client and server to send the operation performed in their message, which would need to be executed by the other party. To keep things simple, let's limit the operations to (commutative) addition, allowing us to disregard message ordering. For example, the client seeds the server with z = 20: server:z=20, client:z=20 server sends {+3} message (so z=23 locally) & client sends {-2} message (so z=18 locally) at the exact same time server receives {-2} message at some point, adds to his local copy so z=21 client receives {+3} message at some point, adds to his local copy so z=21 As long as all messages are eventually evaluated by both parties, the correct answer will eventually be given to the users of the client and server since we limited ourselves to commutative operations (addition of 3 and -2). This does mean that both client and server can be returning incorrect answers in the time it takes for messages to be exchanged and processed. While undesirable, I believe this is unavoidable. Some possible implementations of this idea include: Open an encrypted, always on TCP socket connection for communication Pros: no additional infrastructure needed, client and server know immediately if there is a problem (disconnect) with the other party, fairly straightforward (except the the encryption), native support from both JVM and C platforms Cons: pretty low-level so you end up writing a lot yourself (protocol, delivery verification, retry-on-failure logic), probably have a lot of firewall headaches during client app installation Asynchronous messaging (ex: ActiveMQ) Pros: transactional, both C & Java integration, free up the client and server apps from needing retry logic or delivery verification, pretty straightforward encryption, easy extensibility via message filters/routers/etc Cons: need additional infrastructure (message server) which must never fail, Database or file system as asynchronous integration point Same pros/cons as above but messier RESTful Web Service Pros: simple, possible reuse of the server's existing REST API, SSL figures out the encryption problem for you (maybe use RSA key a la GitHub for authentication?) Cons: Client now needs to run a C HTTP REST server w/SSL, client and server need retry logic. Axis2 has both a Java and C version, but you may be limited to SOAP.     I,m trying to work through and test a Voice Recognition example based on the VoiceRecognition.java example at http://developer.android.com/resources/samples/ApiDemos/src/com/example/android/apis/app/VoiceRecognition.html but when click on the button to create the activity, I get a dialog that says Connection problem. My Manifest file is using the Internet Permission, and I understand it passes the to the Google Servers. Do I need to do anything else to use this.     another day another problem, I finally managed to set up correctly google maps on my android application, or at least I thought I've done it, the whole progam starts, it even call the class which should "print" a map, but the only thing I can see is a grid with google label on it [ in the corner ]. I've find out on stackoverflow website that I should sent a gps signal or sth like this from dalvik monitor, and I've done it.     I'm working on a system using lots of MySQL queries and I'm running into some memory problems I'm pretty sure have to do with me not handling pointers right... Anyone's got any ideas why? I'm not sure the amount of global variables in this code is any good, but I didn't design it and only got until tomorrow to fix and finish it, so workarounds are welcome!     I'm trying to get some code I was passed up and running. It appears to use the Hibernate framework. I've gotten past most of the errors tweaking the configuration, but this one has me dead stumped. It's trying to connect to two databases: gameapp and gamelog. Both exist. It seems to have issues connecting to gamelog, but none connecting to gameapp (later in the init, it connects to and loads other DBs just fine). Below, I've pasted the error and exception stack dump. I imaging there's something else in the configs, so I've also included the configuration file for that db. Ensure you have logged into the computer as the installing owner of EPM. Since Enterprise Manager uses a LOT of resources, be sure that there is adequate free RAM to accommodate the added load. On the machine where WebLogic AdminServer is set up (typically the Foundation Services machine), run \Oracle\Middleware\wlserver_10.3\common\bin\config (config.sh on Unix). Select the 'Extend an existing WebLogic domain' option, and click the 'Next' button. Select the domain being used by EPM System. - Typically, the default domain is created under /Oracle/Middleware/user_projects/domains and is named EPMSystem. - Click 'Next'. Under 'Extend my domain automatically to support the following added products' - place a check mark before 'Oracle Enterprise Manager - 11.1.1.0 [oracle_common]' to select it. - Continue accepting the defaults by clicking 'Next' on each page until - on the last page you click 'Extend'. - The system will grind for a few minutes while it configures (deploys?) EM. - Start the AdminServer. Sometimes there is contention in the startup order of the various servlets (resulting in some not coming up). The configurator is packaged in a zip file that contains the complete Java environment to run standalone. Once the package is downloaded and unzipped it’s simply a matter of launching it using the config command or shell depending on your runtime environment. Oracle Appliance Manager Configurator is a Java-based tool that enables you to input your deployment plan and validate your network settings before an actual deployment, or you can just preview and experiment with it. Simply download and run the configurator on a local client system which can be a Windows, Linux, or UNIX system. (For Windows launch the batch file config.bat for Linux/Unix environments, run  ./ config.sh). You will be presented with the very same dialogs and options used to configure a production ODA but on your workstation. At the end of a configurator session, you may save your deployment plan in a configuration file. I am putting this MDB in a jar file(named utsJar.jar) and copied it in deploy folder of JBOSS, In the test env. this MDB works well but in another env. [ env settings and jboss/java ver is same ] it is throwing error at jboss start up [attached below ].
