  • Currently well suited SATA2-SSDs for Laptop usage

    I am looking for a solid state drive for my laptop. My dillemma: I have been waiting for the new Intel SSDs since Q3/2010, as I've heard they should be better and cheaper, due to lower memory manufacturing costs. Now it looks like the new Intel drives are very fast, but still expensive. I would still buy one of them if I could benefit from the full speed. My hardware only has a SATA-2 port though. Thus, my question: Is it worthwhile to buy one of those new Intel SSDs made for SATA-3 if I won't be able to use the full speed? Are there any other promising new SSDs that will be released soon? (Inside the next 1-2 months) If I wouldn't make a good deal buying the newer, faster drives, what drives can you recommend? I don't consider this question subjective, as I am mainly looking for answers concerning the SATA-2/SATA-3 conflict.

    I've two ASAs 5515 connected in failover Active/Stand by (on Gi0/5) My two ASAs are connected to two Switch ProCurve 2920 to have HA if something happens. BUT this is not working... I tried many things and I can't make it work. In this configuration, I can't ping anything between my ASA and my Switch (or any object connected).     I have this HP Pavilion Desktop. As you can see, that page says the memory speed supported is PC2-4200. It currently has a 512 MB stick - CPU-Z Screenshots: hxxp://i41.tinypic.com/j5clj6.jpg and hxxp://i39.tinypic.com/20tldlc.jpg However, a crucial.com scan gives a slightly different report - hxxp://crucial.com/systemscanner/viewscanbyid.aspx?id=5718CFE831D926C3 It says the system can support PC2-5300 memory. So my question is which one should I trust? I want to upgrade the computer's ram to 2 GB (the maximum supported), because XP Media Center is giving me problems and I will install Windows 7 on this. PC2-6400 is the most common DDR2 memory I have been able to find here in the market. Will it cause any problems if I install 2 × 1 GB PC2-6400 DDR2 memory sticks (in dual channel) in this computer, (afaik, it will just run at the lower speed of 533 MHz, or whatever the motherboard supports), or do I absolutely need to get PC2-4200 sticks?

    I bought a month ago the D-Link DWA-160 Xtreme N Dual Band USB Adapter and I wonder about the speed. I have a 60Mbps but the speed is never above 300Kbps when I browse Internet or download something. Even from Microsoft or Apple (the fastest server I found). Now on Windows 8, we can see the Wi-Fi stats in Task Manager, there they are: Notice the red rectangle. The signal is 3/5 and I'm about 5 meters far from my router. An Apple Time-Capsule. Also, the connection type is 802.11g, I want N. I made this config in my Device Properties: Does anyone figured out to force the 802.11n in Windows? (Windows 8 preferably)

  • What affects video encoding speeds?

    FRAPs doesn't compress its videos when you record, so the files are enormous. In a long recording you can get up to a few hundred gigabytes. Obviously, usually you would need to convert/compress them. What affects the speed of this? I don't think the RAM does, as when I converted 600 gb my RAM usage only went to 6 gig, but the processor was at 100%, which is surprising as I have a 6 core processor @ 3.46 ghz. Would clock speed or cores help the most?

    I just tested an Nvidia 9300 GS card with a Intel Corei3 HD 2000 graphics system. Here is the windows experience index scores I got : Nvidia 9300 GS : Base Score 3.9 Processor : 7.1 Memory : 7.5 Graphics : 3.9 Gaming Graphics : 5.1 Hard Disk : 5.9 Intel HD 2000 : Base Score : 5.2 Processor : 7.1 Memory : 5.9 Graphics : 5.2 Gaming Graphics : 5.8 Hard Disk : 5.9 My questions are : When using Intel HD graphics, it reduces the score of my Ram! How is that possible? It checks the speed of the ram. Not the size (i think). Intel graphics take some of the ram space but how can that effect the speed? From both of them, what will be the good choice?

There are some references on the mono site (companies using mono), but I couldn't find a high traffic website sample other than Deki powered ones. And I've read some mailings about mod_mono stability problems because of inexistence of compacting GC.   • Large file copy from NFS to local disk performance drop

    I'm trying to copy a 200GB file from an NFS mount to a local disk. The local disk is an XFS filesystem on a LVM on top of a RAID 5 system (hardware RAID controler). I'm using rsync to monitor the transfer speed. At the beginning the IO speed is about 200MB/s, stable for the first 18GB. But then the performance drops by a factor of 10-20 and never recovers to the initial rate. Sometimes it reaches about 50-100MB/s but just for a few seconds and then the process seems to hang for a bit. At the same time all file-stat operations on the target filesystem are blocking for a long time (minutes). Also interrupting the copy process blocks for several minutes, a sub-sequent delete of the partly copied file takes also several minutes. Any ideas what could be causing this?

    What is the difference between 32 and 64-bit software? My understanding is that 64-bit can use more RAM, if it's available, because it has a larger address space for it. Is this correct? And, specifically: If I have a 64-bit operating system with lots of RAM, and I install, say, the 32-bit version of MySQL instead of the 64-bit version, will it be unable to use all the available RAM and therefore run slower than the 64-bit version might on the same machine (assuming RAM becomes the bottleneck before processing speed or disk access speed or whatever)? If I have a 32-bit operating system and I install a 64-bit piece of software on it, will it (probably) fail to run?

  • Flash stream makes my internet slow and cpu rush

    When I try to watch a live Flash stream, my CPU usage goes up to 75% and my Internet speed goes down. If I run a test before the video-stream, my speed is ~40/10Mbps and during the stream it drops to 0.1-0.5Mbps. The stream is laggy and I can only watch one to two seconds at a time, start/stop/start/stop. I have cleared my history, cache, cookies, temp files, and so on. I have searched for malware and took care of that. I have updated my drivers, reinstalled Flash and everything else I can think of, but it remains slow. I had this problem before and it just started working normally from one day to another. Could it be a hardware problem?

    I am looking at going with a TWO Drive Only SSD RAID-0 Configuration And was wondering if I would get better performance / Speed from the Use of a RAID Controller / Card Verses just using the Software RAID on my Mother Board. I have herd conflicting reports , Again I only Plan on Running " 2 " SSD Drives in RAID-0 Config I have No- problem spending the extra money for a good controller but only if I am going to benifit performance wise , Otherwise if there is no notable Gain I will just use the Software RAID that my HP-180-T came with Intel- 3.33 GHZ , 6-Core , 12-GB of DDR-3. I have a huge External drive for All Storage and am not concerned about Data loss just looking for pure speed. And if a Controller will benifit my performance Wht type of card would one suggest?

    I've been running Ubuntu 10.10 in a physical x86-64 machine. Today Update Manager reminded me that there are some updates to install and I confirmed the action. I should had read the update list but I didn't. I can only remember there is an update about cups. After the upgrading, Update Manager requires a restart and I confirmed too.   • Computer turns off and on after start ..then goes dead

    I built a new PC from the following components: - CPU: Intel Core i7 950 - MB: Gigabyte X58A-UD3R - RAM: 2x2gb i7 Corsair memory - VGA: Zotac AMP2 GTX260 - HDD: 1 GreenSATA HDD (Western Digital 500gb RE2) When I turn it on, it goes for a few seconds, fans at maximum speed, then turns off. The again, it starts by itself.. and goes with fans on max speed, nothing happens. First I suspected my PSU. It's a Chieftec 450AA PSU. After I borrowed a Chieftec 550AA PSU, I tried to start with that. Exact same story. Any idea ? Do I need a bigger PSU? Reason why its not localized. I never seen this turn on, off, on. If you give answer for that, it would already help people like me, with the same problem.

Currently i am using a integer field to store the priority, but i would like to display high/medium/low instead of letting user type in a priority.     Recently the internet speed on our college LAN has dropped drastically. ( Avg file download speed 13 Kbps :( ). However g-talk's video chat remains unbelievably fluent when done with someone within the college's LAN. However video chat is practically impossible for anyone else who is not in the college network. My college has a proxy server through which all computers inside the college connect to the internet. I suspect its due to the proxy server. Also how g-talk maintains video chat? Is it something in the mechanism that speeds up video chat between two clients with the same IP? Since all computers use the same proxy,their IP would appear to be the same to google server.

    I have a strange problem, some apps that I download do not launch. There are 2 scenarios The application starts but keeps bouncing, once I click the bouncing icon in the tray it disappears. The process also closes in activity monitor The application fails to start, how ever many times I launch it, it refuses.   • IPv6 routing to another interface

    I'm trying to get an IPv6 enabled router to forward data from one interface to the other and I'm having issues. When following this example (http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk872/technologies_configuration_example09186a0080ba6106.shtml) I am able to get full connectivity between all 3 routers in my simulator. However when I try to use only 1 router; I can't get connectivity to the other interfacs on the same router. My PC is directly attached to FA 0/1 and it can ping the router's interface. However it can not ping any other interface on the router(which unless I'm missing something it should be able to do). The router on the other hand can ping everything. I thought static routes might help; but the router already has routes for everything. I'm thinking the packet should come in; router looks up the destination in it's ipv6 routing table and then realizes it's for itself, and should respond. I thought maybe it couldn't respond directly; so I tried pinging a device like 2001:0000:0000:1000::2, but i don't get a response. I'm running on IOS 12.4. I'm missing something(hopefully simple), but I just can't see what it is. With only 1 router; how do I enable my PC to talk to the other subnets?   • Laptop is super slow on network

    So on our network we have a bunch of wireless macs and window Operating laptops, we have a network setup with 802.11g,b,n. All the laptops seem fine except one which is only getting speeds of 54Mb. I have changed the encryption from AES to TKIP and reset the connection, i have updated the drivers, tried plugging it into the LAN and still same slow speed. Apparently the laptop with the slow speed is fine on other networks. I don't know what to do, can anyone help me?

  • 2 DSL lines...any benefit?

    I have verizon DSL in my office, I put DSL in about a year ago for $29.95 month...I added a new phone line recently and it was cheaper to actually get it bundled with DSL so now I have two DSL lines...my plan was to shut the first one off when my 1 year contract comes up (in September). A couple of times DSL has gone out on one line so I just used the other, which is a nice redundancy to have - but it doesn't happen often. (I unplugged one line and plugged in the other) Question is, is there any way to use both DSL lines together so that 1) I can increase bandwidth and effective speed might increase (is that possible?) or 2) have them both on and connected someway so that traffic on my network would just use either one, and if one went down the traffic would route automatically? If I can either increase speed by having two, or at a minimum get some automatic redundancy, I see no reason to keep both on.... Thanks!
