• Start menu entries suddenly missing

  I am using Windows 7 x64 SP1 with all updates applied. During the last weeks I observed that some start menu entries / folders suddenly disappeared. Those programs then sometimes can be found using the search function of the start menu, then however they are labeled by the name of their executable (like photoshop instead of Adobe Photoshop). Does anyone know where to start looking for errors? Does the start menu has anything to do with windows search? I doubt it?

  Is there a simple way in MS Word to get large quotation marks tightly round a paragraph of text, like you might see in print media to mark a quote? If you simply increase the font size of the quote character, it moves too far away from the text it's accompanying. Worse, the first and last lines start to detach from the rest of the paragraph. • Ubuntu not booting, recovery mode not loading

  I have a dual-boot Ubuntu 11.10 and Windows 7 machine setup and last night I had to force shutdown Ubuntu during updates because it wasn't responding. Since then, Ubuntu will not boot up, only flashing a blank lit screen for a split second every couple of seconds. Booting in recovery mode does not help either, as it doesn't load at all. If anyone can help me diagnose what's wrong and figure out what to do, that would be greatly appreciated!

  Clients that have been reporting their state fine suddenly start reporting "Windows 0.0" for their OS and "Not yet contacted" for their Last Contacted date even though previously these values were present and correct.   I've been working on getting my snort machine up and running, and working through Snort IDS and IPS Toolkit. The authors suggest using Oinkmaster, but on that website, the last update was February of 2008. That seems sort of...odd. Maybe there haven't been any issues with oinkmaster in the past year and a half, but it made me wonder if there was another solution that I don't know about. If you use snort, do you automatically update your rules, and if so, how?

• 'less' doesn't clear screen after quit

  The default behavior for 'less' is to clear the screen after quitting. This behavior stopped when I started using: export TERM=xterm Now 'less' leaves the last page I viewed on the screen, and I want to re-enable the default behavior of clearing the screen. Googling this problem I found that people use the following command in their ~/.screenrc: altscreen on I'm not sure if this is a mac-issue but I don't have this command available. We want to make it so that this automatically deletes (or preferably MOVES to another folder on the same shared drive) all the files that haven't been accessed in the last two weeks. • enable vnc on xen without having to shut down all the domains

  The last guy forgot to enable vnc connections on our Xen blade and I need to install a windows domain, is there any way I can enable vnc without shutting down half our company? From what I can tell I need to edit xend-config.sxp which would likely require a restart of xend, which means shutting down all the running domains. Is there any way around this? thanks :)

  A Linux server running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS with LAMP has a strange behaviour since last week: - cpu %sys higher than before, nearly equal %usr (before that, %sys just little compare with %usr) - IO reduce by half or 1/3 compare with the week before I try to diagnostic the process/cpu by some command (top/vmstat/mpstat/sar), and see that maybe it's a bit high on interrupt timer/resched. I don't know what that means, now open to any suggestion.

Questions Given the kind of scripts I keep on these systems (which control much of our network infrastructure), I'm a little spooked by this and would like to understand what would cause my logins to occasionally miss source addresses. Is there anything (other than malicious activity) that would reasonably explain the behavior? Other than bash history timestamping, are there other things I can do to track the issue down? Informational Since this started happening, I enabled bash history time-stamping (i.e. HISTTIMEFORMAT="%y-%m-%d %T " in .bash_profile) and also added a few other bash history hacks; however, that does not give clues to what happened during the previous occurrences. • Microsoft Word changing document view on scroll

  I have a friend who is trying to view a Word document, consisting of a large table (nothing to do with me), that was fine until today. Whenever they scroll down past a certain limit, the content on the page is replicated once and after that the table cells are blank. The view also switches to Normal· They think that the document was last opened in OpenOffice (version 3.3.0, which opens the document fine now), could this cause it? Its Word 2000. What can we do?
