Java is not just a platform, it is also an ecosystem, and you can't have an ecosystem without a community."     Oracle Open World 2012 has been over for a bit more than a week now and we're catching up with post-OOW tasks while still marvelling over what I remember as the best Open World yet. We had a steady traffic at our demo pods, all hands on labs were fully booked (stay tuned for those labs), sessions were very well visited and we met innumerable customers for discussions, feedback and Q&A.   • WebLogic Server 11gR1 Interactive Quick Reference

    The WebLogic Server 11gR1 Administration interactive quick reference is a multimedia tool for various terms and concepts used in WebLogic Server architecture. This tool is available for administrators for online or offline use. This is built as a multimedia web page which provides descriptions of WebLogic Server Architectural components, and references to relevant documentation. This tool offers valuable reference information for any complex concept or product in an intuitive and useful manner. Each interactive type presents data that may be available in the documentation (in the case of Oracle products), but presents it in a way that is more intuitive and useful to a user of Oracle products because it displays data the way it is used in a real world, best practice scenario. For example, the architectural diagram interactive type provides an image of an architectural diagram that is typically larger than a single slide or paper. The image is scrollable and provides zoom capabilities to easily and clearly view any part of the image. The image itself contains a hotspot map that you can click to get more information about a feature, including reference links to the documentation in question. Linking the visual image of the component and where it fits in the overall architecture of the product, or technology in use, to the technical explanation and how-to materials related to that component is something not offered by the documentation. In a future release, the poster will also enable you to drill down even further into the individual subsystems in nested diagrams to look at the details of that subsystem. In short, the interactive posters are good at showing you the big picture, then quickly and easily getting you to the detailed information you need. In an instant, you can see where a technical component fits into an overall architecture, and zero in on the nitty-gritty details that show you how to do it yourself. Note: This is a first initial release with more features in development. Currently known information: Only Firefox 8.0 and higher is known to work with this product. This product may work with Chrome and Safari browsers, but is known to have issues in Internet Explorer at this time.     Gerade wurde bekannt, dass sich Oracle und Fujitsu auf eine noch intensivere Zusammenarbeit geeinigt haben.Spannend für die Partner dürfte vor allem sein, dass Fujitsu nun laut Vertrag mit dem Oracle PartnerNetwork auch als Systemintegrator und Lösungsanbieter für das gesamte Produktportfolio aktiv wird.Ansonsten wird, wie zu erwarten, die Weiterentwicklung der SPARC Enterprise "M-Series"- Server voran getrieben. Das neue Gehäuse mit den Logos beider Firmen wurde ja bereits im Dezember präsentiert. Nun schwebt den Partnern eine Leistungssteigerung um das 15-fache innerhalb der nächsten fünf Jahre vor.Gemeinsame Tests sollen zudem das Zusammenspiel von Soft- und Hardware beider Firmen optimieren, vor allem in geschäftskritischen Umgebungen.Das klingt nach frischem Wind in der über 20-jährigen Partnerschaft.   • EPM 11.1.2 - Issues during configuration when using Oracle DB if not using UTF8

    If you see issues during configuration when using Oracle DB if not using UTF8: Workaround: a. During configuration of EPM products, a warning message is displayed if the Oracle DB is not UTF8 enabled. If you continue with the configuration, certain products will not work as they will not be able to read the contents in the tables as the format is wrong.b. The Oracle DB must be setup to use AL32UTF8 or a superset that contains AL32UTF8. c. The only difference between AL32UTF8 and UTF8 character sets is that AL32UTF8 stores characters beyond U+FFFF as four bytes (exactly as Unicode defines UTF-8). Oracle’s “UTF8” stores these characters as a sequence of two UTF-16 surrogate characters encoded using UTF-8 (or six bytes per character). Besides this storage difference, another difference is better support for supplementary characters in AL32UTF8 character set.

  • A "First" at Oracle OpenWorld

These firsts keep the conference fresh and are the reason people come back year after year. An important first this year is our Fusion CRM customers who are using the product and deriving real benefit from Fusion CRM. Everyone can learn from and interact with them -- including us!  We love talking to customers, especially those who are using our solutions in unexpected ways because they challenge us! At previous OpenWorlds, we presented our overall Fusion vision and our plans for Fusion CRM. Those presentations helped customers plan their strategies and map out their new release uptakes. Fast forward to March of this year when the first Fusion CRM customer went live. Since then we've watched the pace of go-lives accelerate every single month. Now we're at the threshold of another OpenWorld -- with over 45,000 attendees, 2,500 sessions and LOTS of other activities. To avoid having our customers curl into a ball with sensory overload, we designed a Focus On Document to outline the most important Fusion CRM activities.   • Oracle Accelerate for Midsize Companies Podcast

    Recently, Rebecca Wettemann, Vice President of Research at Nucleus Research, published a report on Oracle Business Accelerators. In this podcast, Rebecca discusses the findings of this report with Jim Lein, Marketing Director with the Oracle Accelerate Program Office. When Nucleus analyzed the actual experiences of customers using Accelerators, analysts found all customers reduced the time to deploy Oracle E-Business Suite, many by more than 50 percent of the time an implementation without Accelerators would have taken.

    Welcome to my blog! I am Frédéric Desbiens, a new member of the ADF Product Management team.  I joined Oracle only a few weeks ago. My boss is Grant Ronald, and I have the privilege to work in the same team as Susan Duncan, Frank Nimphius, Lynn Munsinger and Chris Muir. I share with them a passion for all things Java and ADF. With this blog, I hope to help you be more successful with our products – whether you are a customer or a partner. You may have heard of me before. Maybe you have my book in your bookshelf; or maybe we met at a conference. I went to JavaOne, ODTUG Kaleidoscope and Oracle OpenWorld in the past, when I worked for a major consulting firm. I will spare you all the details of my career; you can have a look at my LinkedIn profile if you are curious about my past.  Usually, my posts will be of a technical nature, and will focus on Oracle ADF and Oracle JDeveloper. SOA and portals have always been two topics of interest for me, however, and I will write about them. Over time, you will probably get acquainted with my « strategic » side as well. I devour history books, and always had a tendency to look at the big picture. I will probably not resist to the temptation of mixing IT and history, but this will be occasional, I promise!  At this point, I owe you an explanation about the title of the blog. I am French-Canadian, and wanted to evoke my roots in an obvious yet unobtrusive way. I was born in Chicoutimi, which is one of the main cities found in the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region. Traditionally, a large part of the wild blueberry production of the province of Québec come from there. A common nickname for the inhabitants is thus Les Bleuets, « The Blueberries » in English.   • Using EPEL repos with Oracle Linux

    There's a Fedora project called EPEL which hosts a set of additional packages that can be installed on top of various distributions such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux, CentOS, Scientific Linux and of course also Oracle Linux. These packages are not distributed by the distribution vendor and as such also not supported by the vendors (including Oracle) however for users that want to pick up some extras that are useful, it's very easy to do this. All you need to do is download the EPEL RPM from the website, install it on Oracle Linux 5 or Oracle Linux 6 and run yum install or yum search to get the packages. example : # wget http://download.fedoraproject.org/pub/epel/6/i386/epel-release-6-5.noarch.rpm # rpm -ivh epel-release-6-5.noarch.rpm # yum repolist Loaded plugins: refresh-packagekit, rhnplugin repo id repo name status epel Extra Packages for Enterprise Linux 6 - x86_64 7,124 The folks that build these repositories are doing a great job at adding very useful packages. They are free, but also unsupported of course.
