• Large tables of static data with DBGhost

  We are thinking of restructuring our database development and deployment processes by using DBGhost, we want to move away from the central development database and bring the database to the source control. One of the problems we have is a big table with static data (containing translated language strings), it has close to 200K rows. I know that our best solution is to move these stings into resource files, but until we implement that, will DbGhost be able to maintain all this static data and generate our development and deployment databases in a short time? And if not is there a good alternative to filling up this table whenever we need to?

• Joining tables from 2 different connection strings

  Hello, I need to join two tables from different MySQL (PHP) connection strings and different databases. $conn = mysql_connect('192.168.30.20', 'user', 'pass'); $conn2 = mysql_connect('anotherIPHere', 'user2', 'pass2'); $db = mysql_select_db('1stdb', $conn); $db2 = mysql_select_db('2nddb', $conn2); If I were using the same connection I would just prefix the tables with the db names, such as database1.table1.column and database2.table2.column2, but since I'm using two completely separate connection strings the MySQL Query does not know which connection string to use, thus the resource is not usable. I've read a ton of resources that show how to use two databases, from the SAME connection string and that is working fine, but I can't find anything related to multiple connection strings and databases.   On success, ShellExecute returns a handle. Do we need to close this handle, and if so, how ? According to examples published my Microsoft, we need not close this handle. But the doc of ShellExecute itself is mute on the subject. Can you confirm we indeed do not need to close this handle ? But then, how can a handle be valid and in no need of being closed ??? Which of the following statements is/are true: the handle is invalid and we can't do anything with it; the handle is never freed and there is a (Microsoft-sponsored) memory leak (until the caller program ends); the handle is automatically freed by the system at some time and never reused afterwards (- another kind of resource leak). Only on trying to use it can we know whether it still points to something. what else ?

• Is ReaderWriterLockSlim.EnterUpgradeableReadLock() essentially the same as Monitor.Enter()?

  So I have a situation where I may have many, many reads and only the occasional write to a resource shared between multiple threads. A long time ago I read about ReaderWriterLock, and have read about ReaderWriterGate which attempts to mitigate the issue where many writes coming in trump reads and hurt performance. However, now I've become aware of ReaderWriterLockSlim... From the docs, I believe that there can only be one thread in "upgradeable mode" at any one time. In a situation where the only access I'm using is EnterUpgradeableReadLock() (which is appropriate for my scenario) then is there much difference to just sticking with lock(){}? Here's the excerpt: A thread that tries to enter upgradeable mode blocks if there is already a thread in upgradeable mode, if there are threads waiting to enter write mode, or if there is a single thread in write mode. Or, does the recursion policy make any difference to this?

• Does the `Expires` HTTP header needs to be consistent across multiple cold-cache requests?

  I'm implementing a custom web server of a kind. And am looking into adding an Expires header support. However, I'm a little unsure of how exactly to implement it. If multiple cold-cache requests are being made to the same unchanged resource on the server and the server returned different Expires header (say it uses relative time to calculate the exact value of the Expires date e.g. +6 hours from the request time), does that invalidate the cache on all the proxy servers in-between as well? Or is it impossible to happen (per the spec)? Does the Expires HTTP header needs to be consistent across multiple cold-cache requests?

• Does a PHP library exist to work with PRC/.mobi files?

  I'm writing a WordPress plugin to create an eBook from a selected category in most major eBook formats. I would like to support MobiPocket since that's the format used by the Kindle but I'm not sure how to go about it. From what I've read .mobi files are actually Palm Resource Databases (PRC) but I haven't been able to find a PHP class to work with these. I thought about using exec along with KindleGen but that would be undesirable as it would complicate initial setup. I've also thought about hosting a web service somewhere and using XML-RPC to accomplish this but that also complicates things. My question is: is there a PHP class/library (PHP-only preferred) that can work with PRC or even better, a class that specialises in creating MobiPocket ebooks? (needs to be open source since I'm releasing under the GPL) I've tried searching but haven't been able to find anything.

Using an inline element in a UiBinder template. Modern GWT applications typically use a combination of CssResource and UiBinder. So my question is, when should I use a css file and create a CssResource for it, and when should I define styles directly in the ui.xml file using <ui:style>? Are there any performance implication (i.e. resource size to download on the client) with either of these ways?

While compiling the website Compilation errors are occuring i.e Licenses.licx file is not compiling, if it compile than it will reproduces an AppLicenses.dll. In the licensing.licx file containing one class and a namespace(i.e. OSADirectLicensing.OSADirectLicensedClass, OSADirectLicensing). • Robocopy for Windows 2003 doesn't support /DST option

  Does anyone know if it is possible to download the latest robocopy for Windows 2003. The latest version provides the /DST option which ignores time stamps changed due to BST (British Summer Time). Every time we do a build and sync our servers when we go +1/-1 hour it takes hours instead of minutes because it sees everything as changed. I noticed it is included automatically with Vista/Win7 but the Resource toolkit that I downloaded doesn't include a new version of robocopy for Win Server 2003. If there is a place to download it from & will it also work on Windows Server 2003? Thanks.

• Correct way to give users access to additional schemas in Oracle

  I have two users Bob and Alice in Oracle, both created by running the following commands as sysdba from sqlplus: create user $blah identified by $password; grant resource, connect, create view to $blah; I want Bob to have complete access to Alice's schema (that is, all tables), but I'm not sure what grant to run, and whether to run it as sysdba or as Alice.   Here's the thing. I have a button that, depending on the scenario, will behave, look and have different text. Here's how it, roughly, looks like at the moment: - if params[:param_A] && @statement_A %span.button.cancel_button{attribute: "value_B"} - if @statement_B = t('locale_A') - else = t('locale_B') - elsif params[:param_A] %span.button.cancel_button{attribute: "value_A"} - if @statement_B = t('locale_A') - else = t('locale_B') There's also a CSS class both buttons should have IF statement_B is true. So it is a mess. And I recently read about the "Tell, don't ask" principle which I liked very much, so I'd love to apply it here... but I'm not sure how. I know I could make a helper, but I'd like to stay away from them because reasons (I really have some valid reasons to do so, but those are beyond the scope of this question). I can resort to that as a last resource, but would rather find another solution.

  Looking for suggestions/best practices on managing error codes and messages in a multi-tiered applications. Specifically things like: Where should error codes be defined? Enum? Class? How are error messages or further details associated with the error codes? resource files? attributes on enum values, etc.? If you have a multi-tier application consisting of DAL, BLL, UI, and Common projects for example, should there be a single giant list of codes for all tiers, or are the codes extensible by project/tier? Update: Important to mention that I can't rely solely on Exceptions and custom Exception types for error reporting, as some clients for this application will be via web services (SOAP & REST) Any suggestions welcome!

• Maven and db4o dependency

  I'm intrigued to test new frameworks in the Java world, and decided to create a new project that takes advantage of Maven and db4o. I'm starting to get a hang of Maven, but I have a hard time adding db4o as a dependency to the project. First problem is that db4o doesn't exist in the official Maven repositories. Next up comes the problem that db4o seem to have recently restructured their whole site's URI:s, so I'm getting 'site not found' messages all the time when I try to navigate their site. I found somewhere a potential Maven repository that should be at https://source.db4o.com/maven but I get all the time "Error reading archetype catalog https://source.db4o.com/maven Unable to locate resource in repository" when I try to access it. So, any suggestions on how I'll get db4o up through Maven? I've managing Maven through Eclipse with the M2Eclipse plugin.

• Why would GDI+ colours vary based off whether a tooltip is visible?

  I'm displaying a bitmap using GDI+. After loading the bitmap from a DLL resource I set the background colour (blue - #0000FF) to transparent using TransparentBlt. On Windows Vista and later this works as expected. However, on a Windows XP system we're testing on this only works when any tooltip (e.g. the "title" property in IE, or Windows Explorer's tooltip shown when hovering the mouse over a file, etc) is displayed. The rest of the time the background colour is still blue. Has anyone encountered this before, or know of a way to stop this occurring and for the blue to be properly made transparent?

• How to test the XML sent to a web service in Ruby/Rails

  I'm looking for the best way to write unit test for code that POSTs to an external web service. The body of the POST request is an XML document which describes the actions and data for the web service to perform. Now, I've wrapped the webservice in its own class (similar to ActiveResource), and I can't see any way to test the exact XML being generated by the class without breaking encapsulation by exposing some of the internal XML generation as public methods on the class. This seems to be a code smell - from the point-of-view of the users of the class, they should not know, nor care, how the class actually implements the web service call, be it with XML, JSON or carrier pigeons. For an example of the class: class Resource def new #initialize the class end def save! Http.post("http://webservice.com", self.to_xml) end private def to_xml # returns an XML representation of self end end I want to be able to test the XML generated to ensure it conforms to what the specs for the web service are expecting. So can I best do this, without making to_xml a public method?

• MySQL Conventions?

  Hi There, I just moved my website to a new server (Shared to VPS) I expected errors, and the only error that is really puzzling me is this SQL statement. echo mysql_query("SELECT COUNT(*) FROM users_online_now") This returns nothing! And if I try the mysql_num_rows, it returns mysql_num_rows(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL result resource.. If I query another table though eg: echo mysql_query("SELECT COUNT(*) FROM users") It works fine. I'm guessing it's something to do with the naming of the table? It worked fine on my previous host, is there some setting I should modify?

• Finding changes in MongoDB database

  I'm designing a MongoDB database that works with a script that periodically polls a resource and gets back a response which is stored in the database. Right now my database has one collection with four fields , id, name, timestamp and data. I need to be able to find out which names had changes in the data field between script runs, and which did not. In pseudocode, if(data[name][timestamp]==data[name][timestamp+1]) //data has not changed store data in collection 1 else //data has changed between script runs for this name store data in collection 2 Is there a query that can do this without iterating and running javascript over each item in the collection? There are millions of documents, so this would be pretty slow. Should I create a new collection named timestamp for every time the script runs? Would that make it faster/more organized? Is there a better schema that could be used? The script runs once a day so I won't run into a namespace limitation any time soon.

  I have a problem calling stored procedures with a fixed length binary parameter using Entity Framework. The stored procedure ends up being called with 8000 bytes of data no matter what size byte array I use to call the function import. The varbinary(2000) seemed to work fine and the correct length was maintained. Is there a way to prevent the extra data being sent to SQL server? This seems like a big waste of network resource.

  Hello, everybody. I'm here to ask if any of you know how to develop an app for Mac OS X that keeps reading everything the user types in. An example of app that implements this behavior is Text Expander. Text Expander reads everything the user types in, searching for abbreviations previously added on it. When one of this abbreviations is found, Text Expander replace the abbreviation form for the entire content related to that abbreviation. So, I would like to know what resource of Objective-C or Cocoa let you do this kind of stuff. P.S.: Just to mention, I'm not thinking about developing something like a key logger. I'm just curious and thinking about at developing a snippet platform.
