• Approximate Number of CPU Cycles for Various Operations

  I am trying to find a reference for approximately how many CPU cycles various operations require. I don't need exact numbers (as this is going to vary between CPUs) but I'd like something relatively credible that gives ballpark figures that I could cite in discussion with friends. As an example, we all know that floating point division takes more CPU cycles than say doing a bitshift. I'd guess that the difference is that the division is around 100 cycles, where as a shift is 1 but I'm looking for something to cite to back that up. Can anyone recommend such a resource?

"merge" in base R and "join" in plyr appear to use up all my memory effectively crashing my system. • How do I find resources in a .jar on the classpath?

  If I have a collection of resource files in a directory on my classpath, I can enumerate them using ClassLoader.getResources(location). For example if I have /mydir/myresource.properties on the classpath, I can call the classloader's getResources("mydir") and get an enumeration of URLs containing myresource.properties. When I pack up the exact same resources into a .jar, I don't get anything in the enumeration of URLs when I make the call. I've only replaced the folder structure with a jar containing those folders (it's a webapp, so the jar is going into /WEB-INF/lib). I've also got a number of other calls using getResourceAsStream(location) to get other resources individually by name and they're all working fine. What's different about enumerating resources when the resources are in a .jar?

In Vista, Window7 main.bmp is showing just fine. Also in English XP its ok. But why the image is not showing fully in non-English XP? How would I use .ico file here instead of .bmp? This is to make the image transparent.

• PHP / javascript live chat using too much bandwidth

  So I am learning about javascript, so I am making a live chat system with PHP and javascript. I have it so the javascript refreshes the log (each message gets logged in a file on the server), and it refreshes every second. Im using firebug to monitor the resource usage, and I see under the net tab each times its updated, and the bytes add up really fast. I know I can change it to update less, but is there a way that when a user on the other end I'm talking to, when the send a message, it gets sent to the server, then an alert gets sent to me saying that the chatlog needs to update somehow. That way it only updates when the log is updated. let me know, thanks

  I'm diving into web development and I built my personal website using Ruby on Rails 3.1 and I'd like to add a blog to it. Octopress sounds really awesome, and it's written in Ruby, but I can't find a single resource online that discusses integrating Octopress into a Rails app. I know that's not what it was designed for, but I'm amazed there's no discussion on it considering the popularity of these two technologies. The only resources I can find are discussions on using Octopress to create a stand-alone blog website. How can I integrate Octopress into my existing Rails 3.1 app? Can I set it up as a stand-alone website and integrate it as a sub-domain? Other suggestions? Thanks so much in advance for your wisdom!

• Strange issue with jQueryUI and .htaccess RewriteRule

  I have the following rule in my .htaccess which redirects any requests for /labs/... to /projects/...: RewriteRule ^labs/(.+)$ projects/$1 [L] Where projects is a local folder on my web server. I'm using jQueryUI on a page in a subfolder of projects, say projects/project1/index.php. When I hit http://mydomain.com/projects/project1/ everything is fine. However if I hit http://mydomain.com/labs/project1/ almost everything is fine, except that I get the following warning in my JS console: Resource interpreted as image but transferred with MIME type text/html. ui-bg_highlight-soft_60_4ca20b_1x100.png And my jQueryUI button loses its glossy look. I don't even know where to begin to try to solve this. But if anyone has any suggestions I'd greatly appreciate it.

  How should I manage memory in my mission critical embedded application? I found some articles with google, but couldn't pinpoint a really useful practical guide. The DO-178b forbids dynamic memory allocations, but how will you manage the memory than? preallocate everything in advance and send a pointer to each function that needs allocation? Allocate it on the stack? Use a global static allocator (but then it's very similar to dynamic allocation)? Answers can be of the form of regular answer, reference to a resource, or reference to good opensource embedded system for example. clarification: The issue here is not whether or not memory management is availible for the embedded system. But what is a good design for an embedded system, to maximize reliability.

  Hi all, This may well be a little of an open-ended question The site I am working on requires to be optimised for performance. One of the key areas is to optimise the file sizes of the images used upon the site. Unfortunatley these images are being created by employees who do not have the required knowledge for creating images for the web, and it is my job to produce a set of guidelines for them to use. I was wondering whether there was any resource/guidlines/literature regarding typical images file sizes for images of different dimensions - as I would like to include something like this to aid them to ensure their images are being created properly.   Hi, I'm studding a way of using Google Analytics to track Ad impressions/clicks. Looks like event tracking is the way to go. Tracking clicks it's easy to implement. My doubt resides on impressions: using event tracking on page load will cut down my bounce rate to 0 using a second profile doesn't look elegant (leave it for last resource) GOAL: John loads page A and leave. Count 1 for impressions and 1 for bounce rate as it should. Is there a way of doing it with Google Analytics?

• How would I implement separate databases for reading and writing operations?

  I am interested in implementing an architecture that has two databases one for read operations and the other for writes. I have never implemented something like this and have always built single database, highly normalised systems so I am not quite sure where to begin. I have a few parts to this question. 1. What would be a good resource to find out more about this achitecture? 2. Is it just a question of replicating between two identical schemas, or would your schemas differ depending on the operations, would normalisation vary too? 3. How do you insure that data written to one database is immediately available for reading from the second? Any further help, tips, resources would be appreciated. Thanks.

  Hi there, I have an old MySQL 4.1 database with a table that has a few millions rows and an old Java application that connects to this database and returns several thousand rows from this this table on a frequent basis via a simple SQL query (i.e. SELECT * FROM people WHERE first_name = 'Bob'. I think the Java application uses client side prepared statements but was looking at switching this to the server, and in the example mentioned the value for first_name will vary depending on what the user enters). I would like to speed up performance on the select query and was wondering if I should switch to Prepared Statements or Stored Procedures. Is there a general rule of thumb of what is quicker/less resource intensive (or if a combination of both is better)

  I am a long time agile advocated but one of the things that bothers me about Agile is that a lot of agile practitioners, especially the younger ones, have thrown out or are missing a whole lot of good (non Scrum, non XP) practices. Alistair Cockburn's style of writing Use Cases springs to mind; orthogonal arrays (pairwise testing) is another. I hope this is an okay forum to ask this, but since I read mostly Agile related books and articles and work with mostly Agile folk ... is there anything I'm missing? Thanks for all your help.   I have been storing option lists for my Android app in a cloud table. For example, categories like "historical fiction","biography","science fiction", etc. I see the following pros and cons: Pro: I can make changes to the list without sending an app update to Google Play Not normalized - I can use the text in my other data tables instead of a reference ID Con: App needs to take time to download from the web each time (or at least check for changes) English only I believe the "proper" way to do this is the use the XML resource files. But I need to make sure the selection references correctly with my data. That is, my app needs to understand that "Poetry" and "Poesía" are the same thing. Is the correct thing to do: Forget about it since I'll never get to the point where I'm translating my app anyway Use a string-array and use the index (0...x) to know what the selection is Use a 2-dimensional string-array with a reference ID in the first column and the text in the second?

• I can't get areas working in VS2010

  I just upgraded from VS2010 RC to RTM. Now my areas aren't working. I have a Profile area with a Home controller and an Action method Index(). If I try: http://localhost:4951/profile I get a 404 error saying that the resource can't be found. If I try http://localhost:4951/profile/home I get the same error. However, if I try http://localhost:4951/profile/home/index then the view is returned.   Hi, I'm getting very confused about how to call my EF classes in a Class Library from the Client Project I have? Things worked fine when they were in the same project. Now I'm getting errors such as "Unable to load the specified metadata resource ". I've see various ideas / suggestions re how to fix the connection string (e.g. create an App.config in your client project & copy the connection string config from your class library, something about change the connection settings to copy to output, etc) QUESTION - Can someone provide a solid way on how to get EF class access from a separate project working? • How do I extend the classpath used for 'grails run-app'

  I have the following in my Config.groovy file: grails.config.locations = [ "classpath:env.groovy" ] Now, where exactly am I supposed to place "env.groovy" such that it is available on the CLASSPATH during grails run-app? The documentation here is sorely lacking. I am able to get it to work on the pure commandline by placing "env.groovy" in $APP_HOME/etc and then running: $ grails -classpath ./etc run-app This seems a little hackish, but I can live with it... However, I am unable to get any such configuration working when I launch run-app using the Grails eclipse plugin (STS): Unable to load specified config location classpath:env.groovy : class path resource [env.groovy] cannot be opened because it does not exist I've seen related posts here, here, here, and here but the answers have been unfulfilling. I am looking for a CLASSPATH-based solution that will work with 'run-app' in development mode (both commandline and from eclipse). I know how to set up the CLASSPATH for my deployment servlet container, so that is not an issue.

• Real life Java Swing Project

  Hi everybody! I've been working with swing for the last 2 years, but i'm still not satisfy with my own work. The apps are "fast" enough, but the development isn't enough "clean". Can you recommend me any real world project, book, or something similar that shows me how a real world swing app work. May be a framework, something structured, etc. For example, i'm thinking i may code a "window manager" that has all the window of the app in an unified resource, may be cached, etc. I think all those good ideas must be implemented already.
