  Hi, this is my firast time with dedicated servers and im having problem setting up a wildcard sub-domain. I previously tried * /-----/ 14400 /-----/ IN /-----/ A /-----/ (serverip) waited 30 hours and nothing. so i then tried * /-----/ 14400 /-----/ IN /-----/ CNAME /-----/ actvbiv.co.uk. waited another 30 hours, nothing Im now trying; *.actvbiz.co.uk /-----/ 14400 /-----/ IN /-----/ CNAME /-----/ actvbiv.co.uk. • ErrorDocument not working when accessing .htaccess

  I've been setting up ErrorDocuments for a website I'm working, and generally they've been working. However, after I set the 403 ErrorDocument, I noticed that it didn't work when I tried to access the .htaccess file itself. When I access a different forbidden file, the Error Document appears just fine. How can I make the ErrorDocument work on the .htaccess file? • Denyhosts vs fail2ban vs iptables- best way to prevent brute force logons?

  I'm setting up a LAMP server and need to prevent SSH/FTP/etc. brute-force logon attempts from succeeding. I've seen many recommendations for both denyhosts and fail2ban, but few comparisons of the two. I also read that an IPTables rule can fill the same function. Why would I choose one of these methods over another? How do people on serverfault handle this problem?

• Running 32bit eclipse on 64bit windows.

  I am trying to use a 32bit installation of eclipse on my 64bit windows machine. I have eclipse extracted to my C: Drive and Java installed in ProgramFiles(x86) When I go to start eclipse I get the error:Failed to load the JNI shared Library"C:Program Files(x86)\Java\jre6\bin\jvm.dll" I looked and the file is not there. I am setting something up wrong?Just did a fresh install of Java before trying to run eclipse.

  My notebook's(Compaq Presario V5000) graphic card damaged last week and after that it will be restarted when I want to boot. So I tested it via windows live, and it booted from CD without any problem (as you know in win live, the graphic card doesn't recognize, and in setting of graphic card write : unknown ) Now my question : Is there anyway to install windows without any graphic driver please ?for example, Should I delete some installation files ?! • Postfix SMTP auth not working with virtual mailboxes + SASL + Courier userdb

  So I've read a variety of tutorials and how-to's and I'm struggling to make sense of how to get SMTP auth working with virtual mailboxes in Postfix. I used this Ubuntu tutorial to get set up. I'm using Courier-IMAP and POP3 for reading mail which seems to be working without issue. However, the credentials used to read a mailbox are not working for SMTP. I can see from /var/log/auth.log that PAM is being used, does this require a UNIX user account to work? I updated /etc/default/saslauthd to start saslauthd correctly (this page was useful) MECHANISMS="rimap" MECH_OPTIONS="localhost" THREADS=0 OPTIONS="-c -m /var/spool/postfix/var/run/saslauthd -r" After doing this I got the following error in /var/log/auth.log: li305-246 saslauthd[28093]: auth_rimap: unexpected response to auth request: * BYE [ALERT] Fatal error: Account's mailbox directory is not owned by the correct uid or gid: li305-246 saslauthd[28093]: do_auth : auth failure: [user=fred] [service=smtp] [realm=] [mech=rimap] [reason=[ALERT] Unexpected response from remote authentication server] This blog post detailed a solution by setting IMAP_MAILBOX_SANITY_CHECK=0 in /etc/courier/imapd. Then restart your courier and saslauthd daemons for config changes to take effect. sudo /etc/init.d/courier-imap restart sudo /etc/init.d/courier-authdaemon restart sudo /etc/init.d/saslauthd restart Watch /var/log/auth.log while trying to send email. Hopefully you're good!

• fink hangs while compiling Octave on OS X

  Disclaimer: I'm totally new to Fink. I'm trying to install Octave (Matlab open source clone) on Mountain Lion using Fink, following instructions at http://wiki.octave.org/Octave_for_MacOS_X It's a new installation of Fink, and I've also installed X11 per instructions. I'm using this command (which I believe is correct since everything's 64 bit now): sudo fink install octave-atlas It's hanging after a while, showing this as it's last output: ... Setting up xft2-dev (2.2.0-2) ... Clearing dependency_libs of .la files being installed Reading buildlock packages... All buildlocks accounted for. /sw/bin/dpkg-lockwait -i /sw/fink/dists/stable/main/binary-darwin-x86_64/x11/xinitrc_1.5-1_darwin-x86_64.deb (Reading database ... 14871 files and directories currently installed.) Preparing to replace xinitrc 1.5-1 (using .../xinitrc_1.5-1_darwin-x86_64.deb) ... Unpacking replacement xinitrc ... Setting up xinitrc (1.5-1) ... I did notice the process name on the terminal's tab was "sort", so the second time I hit this I tried Control-D (End-of-File), and this did seem to unstick it. I'm wondering if there's some misformed command and sort was trying to read from stdin? Questions: 1: Has anybody else seen this? Google wasn't helpful 2: Fink outputs a LOT of warnings and errors.... is that normal? 3: wondering if anybody's got Fink to compile Octave on Mountain Lion specifically? And whether they used just "octave" or "octave-atlas". Or if you got it working with MacPorts or Homebrew? 4: later Fink failed with "Failed: phase compiling: gnuplot-minimal-4.6.1-1 failed". I haven't started googling that yet... but wondering if anybody's see that? Also tried MacPorts but got other errors with Octave. And reading online it looks like HomeBrew also has issues with Octave on Mountain Lion. 5: Generally looking for anybody who's got Octave running on Mountain Lion with any of the package managers. I've been at this for a couple days ;-)

• Quicksilver doesn't open PDF's like it used to

  I've been using Quicksilver for a while now but lately I've been getting this problem that QS doesn't show the Acrobat Reader icon when a PDF is selected, but goes to the "Open With" tab. See the screenshot here: http://skitch.com/niels.bom/n8nw5/google-reader-1000 Is this a bug? Or did I somehow bork a preference setting? I'm using QS B54, 3815, which is the latest AFAIK and Mac OS X 10.5.8. Thanks!

• How to tell rails to use non-default ruby?

  I need two different versions of ruby on a server. The packaged ruby for the packaged puppet to work, and a compiled ruby for a rails web app to work. So basically I want the default ruby to be the ruby from the package, and for rails to use the compiled ruby (in /usr/local/bin/ and /usr/local/lib/ ) I've found references to setting the RUBYPATH and RUBYLIB environment variables, but I'm confused as to where to set them. In .bashrc, .profile, in the apache config somewhere?

• Does VPN connection on virtual machine bypass host VPN?

  I wanted to see if i could channel my traffic trough two vpns, so as an experiment i set up a windows xp virtual machine in virtualbox (using NAT shared network setting), connected the host pc(windows 7) to a vpn, and then the virtual machine to another vpn. this seams to work fine. However, my question is, is the traffic sent trough both vpn servers, or is the virtual machines vpn bypassing the host machines vpn connection? thanks.

  I am trying to activate the CDN tools plugin and I keep getting the following error: Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 67108864 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 30720 bytes) in /srv/www/www.triathleteskitchen.com/wp-content/plugins/cdn-tools/cdn_classes/cloudfiles/cloudfiles_http.php on line 252 After extensive research on this issue in which I updated both of the following settings: max_execution_time = 300 memory_limit = 128M and verified the settings are active by setting up a dump phpinfo() page. • Windows 7 NNTP Server

  I am doing some development that requires some interaction with an NNTP server, however I don't want to develop against a live server for obvious reasons and am trying to get a local NNTP server setup for testing, but for the life of me I can't find any guides on setting one up in (preferably) Windows 7. Can anyone shed some light? I've found that in IIS 6 you were able to setup an NNTP server, but I unfortunately do not have a 2003 VM at my disposal, I'm stuck with either XP or Windows 7. Thanks

• Dynamips and Tap Devices, To and From the same machine

  I am setting up a dynamips/dynagen lab and am wondering if there is any way to get traffic to route out one tap devices, go into the lab, and come back to a tap device on the same machine. I have tried host specific routes as well as removing the route created when I give the tun device an ip via ifconfig. With both of these, traffic always preferes the attached devices and won't go through my lab. Any way to make this work without a separate machine or vm?

  Hi all, I'd like to know if there is a way for a user account to be enabled or elevated to carry out system admin tasks WITHOUT having to use the root account or sudo. Goal here is to allow a user account to Add/Delete users/printers without giving them the 'God' powers that the root account carries, in a way setting up a restricted system admin essentially. Not sure if there is a way of doing this as most just use root to my understanding.

• SQL Server 2008 R2 upgrade fails on upgrade rule check

  I'm trying to upgrade an evaluation instance of SQL Server 2008 to a fully licensed instance of SQL Server 2008 R2. I made it most of the way through the installer, but I'm getting stopped at the Upgrade Rules page - the SQL Server Analysis Services Upgrade Service Functional Check is failing. The specific error I get: Rule "SQL Server Analysis Services Upgrade Service Functional Check" failed. The current instance of the SQL Server Analysis Services service cannot be upgraded because the Analysis Services service is disabled or not online. Please start the service and then run the upgrade rules check again. Simple enough - just need to start the service. Here's where it gets troublesome. When I open Services and go to start the SQL Server Analysis Services (MSSQLSERVER) service, it provides me the following message: The SQL Server Analysis Services (MSSQLSERVER) service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs. Trying from the command line as Administrator yields: PS C:\Windows\System32 net start MSSQLServerOLAPService The SQL Server Analysis Services (MSSQLSERVER) service is starting... The SQL Server Analysis Services (MSSQLSERVER) service could not be started. The service did not report an error. More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 3534. I've tried changing the logon setting of this service to Administrator, a user with admin privileges, and both the Local System and Network Service accounts - nothing works. In addition, when I look at the service through the SQL Server Configuration Manager (also run as Administrator), attempting to change the logon setting for the service results in the message: The server threw an exception. [0x80010105] I have no need for analysis services themselves - all I need is for this one service to be running long enough to do the R2 upgrade, then it can shut down again. Any thoughts on how to get the Analysis Services service running? Update: Checking the event log, I found an error logged to the Application log from the MSSQLServerOLAPService. It has event ID 0, task category (289), and says: The service cannot be started: XML parsing failed at line 1, column 4: Unrecognized input signature.

• Dovecot, IMAP outlook reports error 0x800CCC0E cannot synchronize subscribed folders

  I have recently some issues with people using my email server. They have problems with synchronizing folders on outlook, and I can't figure out what to do. I found somewhere that I could extend a setting for imap connections: mail_max_userip_connections = 20 which didn't really help, I was thinking about extending timeout of connection or something, but really can find anything like that. • Can't write to raid on Fedora

  I just did a fresh install of Fedora 11 and added Raid 1 following this tutorial: http://www.optimiz3.com/installing-fedora-11-and-setting-up-a-raid-0-1-5-6-or-10-array/ Now I see the filesystem when I open 'Computer' in the GUI, and I open it and see 'lost+found', but i can't write to the drive. The option is simply greyed out. And when I view Properties on the drive and go to Permissions, it says 'The permissions of {driveid} could not be determined.' Any ideas?

  I would like to use all my monitors for the remote session (an option in RDC dialogue) if I connect (from Windows 7) to the one server with Windows 2008 R2 it works OK (I have remote connection on my all monitors) when do I connect to the another server with Windows 7 it just wound not use all my monitors, but just one (full screen mode).   On Linux systems, you can successfully chmod u+s $some_directory, but instead of forcing the ownership of new subdirectories and files to be the owner of the containing directory (and setting subdirectories u+s as well) as you might expect, the system just ignores the setuid bit. Subdirectories and files continue to inherit the UIDs of their creating processes, and subdirectories are not setuid by default. Why is setuid ignored on directories, and how can I get the system to recognize it?
