  • trying to install ubuntu touch to nexus 4 - can't connect device (14.04 in virtual box on mac)

    I'm trying to install Ubuntu touch to a nexus 4. I've followed all the steps so far, downloaded the packages and gotten the phone ready, but now I got to the step of connecting it to the computer [under 'Enable USB Debugging'], but it's not listed when I try $ adb devices (I tried the 'adb kill-server' command first too, but nothing is listed). I'm sure it's something simple I'm forgetting, but can anyone help please? I have debugging enabled. Running Trusty in VirtualBox on MacBook. Thanks!

  • Dual booting windows 8/ubuntu 12.04.2, Grub doesn't appear and machine never boot in ubuntu

    i got a new ACER predator AG3620-UR308 which came with windows 8, so i wanted to run ubuntu 12.04.2 on it as a dual booting. To be honest, i've been doing dual booting for a while now so, i did the right thing. the box came with 2TB HDD. so i made 4 partitions with a raw partition just after the windows installation partition I always do manual installation so even if ubuntu didn't detect windows 8, it was ok for me. So i created swap area and finished the installation etc....Grub was install on the only drive there which is sda. After reboot, grub doesn't even come up.So it always boot in windows 8. I did repeat the installation process twice and yield same result. which is weird because this method always works for me so far.Even the laptop am using to write this post is a dual booting windows 7/ mint nadia installed the same way. Is there anything new in windows 8 that i didn't make provision for? Before starting the installation, all i read about was that , windows 8 should be installed first and ubuntu after. I went ahead and disable secure boot from the BIOS and enabled CSM (don't even know what it means) according to Acer custhelp site .     Does the Virtual PC XP-Mode (or any other virtualized mode) require safety measures, such as antivirus or a firewall? I'm just wondering if the XP-Mode would be a large security loophole, since it's so much more integrated into Windows 7. Actually I'm wondering the same for Portable Ubuntu, are their any safety measures I should undertake, so that I don't open a backdoor on my computer.

  • How to rewrite a TCP MMOG server designed to run in a single machine, in a distributed way?

    I have a MMOG server running on C++, using winsockets. My server won't support more than 200 players. I had the idea of redesigning it so it will use multiple servers instead of one, so, maybe, for example, each server could take care of a number of players, and, if it was too laggy, it could transfer the responsability of that player to other server. I'm not sure of how to program a consistent game logic like that, though. Are there techniques for this?

  • Solutions for cheaply replacing poorly-supported onboard ATI card with discreet graphics on desktop machine?

    I have put Ubuntu on my mum's desktop computer. Unfortunately, the open source radeon driver does not work well with the onboard ATI graphics, and ATI's proprietary driver no longer supports the hardware at all. In order to use the ATI proprietary driver with this hardware, it is necessary to use an older version of Xorg, which is now only available in versions of Ubuntu older than 8.10. Unfortunately, the open source radeon driver seems to be causing X to lock up intermittently when my mum uses Audacity. I'm willing to accept that some hardware is not well-supported on Ubuntu, and so, because this is a desktop computer with a couple of free PCI slots, I think a better solution might simply be to plug in a new graphics card that might have better driver support, and to disable the onboard ATI card in the BIOS. The requirements for this card are that it be inexpensive and have robust (preferably open source) driver support in Ubuntu 10.04. Heavy-duty graphics processing power is not a requirement. A second-hand card on Ebay would also be fine. Can anyone make some recommendations?

    For a long time when creating images for my development environment, I had to install the OS and then sysprep.  Only after that would I then create a differencing drive/image that would have SQL Server. So, the thought of having a base/core image for SQL Server as a template was not easily done.  Well, how do things change?  SQL Server 2008 R2 gives us the option now.   • Large scale file replication with an option to "unsubscribe" from a replicated file on a given machine

    I have a 100+ GB files per day incoming on one machine. (File size is arbitrary and can be adjusted as needed.) I have several other machines that do some work on these files. I need to reliably deliver each incoming file to the worker machines. A worker machine should be able to free its HDD from a file once it is done working with it. It is preferable that a file would be uploaded to the worker only once and then processed in place, and then deleted, without copying somewhere else — to minimize already high HDD load. (Worker itself requires quite a bit of bandwidth.) Please advise a solution that is not based on Java. None of existing replication solutions that I've seen can do the "free HDD from the file once processed" stuff — but maybe I'm missing something... A preferable solution should work with files (from the POV of our business logic code), not require the business logic to connect to some queue or other. (Internally the solution may use whatever technology it needs to — except Java.)

    I have an interesting question regarding SSH. I have a machine at school that I'd like to be able to access from elsewhere. It's behind a firewall/NAT, so I can't get at it directly. I have a leased web server that I can SSH into from anywhere. I was wondering if I could do some voodoo with port forwarding to get to my machine at school via the web server. I think this comes down to whether you can do SSH "backwards," which may or may not be possible. Basically: Machine A can access Machine B Machine C can also access Machine B How can Machine A access Machine C?

  • How do I access an external drive mounted on a machine on my own network?

    I've got one desktop computer Ubuntu 11.04 with an external USB drive mounted on it on the home WRT54L Linux network (192.168.0.2), and when I arrive at home with my laptop, I want to be able to mount the external USB drive from my Ubuntu 11.04 laptop (192.168.0.3) to the desktop, without having to unplug it from the desktop, that is accessing it. Is it possible to send a remote mount command to the desktop usb drive from my laptop? Ideally something that creates a local mountpoint I can just call locally from the programs installed in my laptop, like: username@laptop ~ ./myprograminlaptop /my/file/which/is/actually/on/the/desktop/file.txt

  • Can't install .NET 4.0 on Windows XP virtual machine! (VMWare Player)

    So, every time I try to install .NET Framework 4.0 on my Windows XP Professional SP3 VMWare Player virtual machine, I get a fatal error. It doesn't work with either Windows Update, the Web Installer or the normal installer! I don't know if it matters (AND I HOPE IT DOES NOT), but the host OS's Operating System drive is encrypted, and the VM HDD file resides on that partition. I don't think it matters because other programs can be installed! And downloaded!

  • I removed my WinXP machine's association to U1 from within the Windows client, and now can't get it back to work anymore

    After testing the windows client for U1 sync, I decided to test the preferences' settings, and tried to remove the association for the WinXP station from which I was working. Now I can start the client, but if I try to open the preferences' settings the application stops. I tried to uninstalle and reinstall, but that won't change the situation: appearently the old settings are kept the same even after a total reinstall.

  • Remote Desktop AND monitor fail on restart (Win2008R2)

    I am in the process of building a small 3 server farm. Each machine is running Window Server 2008 R2. As is normal, I am in the process of installing patch after patch to bring the machine up to snuff. Every time I restart the machine, or most every time, when I try to remote in to the machine I get the Log In window, but then almost immediately I get the message that my remote session was ended. If I physically walk over to the machine and plug in a monitor and keyboard, I see nothing. If I leave the keyboard and monitor in and restart the machine by force, the computer reboots just fine. When windows starts, I get no error message about windows not starting or being shut off unexpectedly. Once I log into the machine physically by the keyboard, I can then remote in to the machine at that point. Very confused. This happens on all 3 machines, these machines have different hardware.
