  • Blog Rebranding

    I have been spending more and more time on learning as much as I can on Agile Development and also have been fairly immersed in rolling out TFS 2010 in our environment.  I feel like it is time to talk about some of my experiences.  With that, I am rebranding my blog to focus on these topics.  I am going to start with a bunch of blogs on the process I have gone through getting TFS 2010 configured for our development teams. Last week, Brian Harry was in our office and gave a great talk on the improved tools in TFS 2010 and how Microsoft uses the tools internally.  I followed that up with a high-level overview of the improved out of the box process templates and the process to customize them.  I am definitely very excited about the new features in 2010 and hopefully will keep up my motivation to blog about it.  I am writing my first post right now about the process I went through to build a task progress report based on the user story progress report in the MSF for Agile Development template.  Stay tunedDid you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors?   • GillSans font doesn't show up in any applications

    I am running Ubuntu 10.04, Lucid Lynx, and I'm trying to add some fonts for use with Libre Office. In particular, I've placed a GillSans.ttc font file into /usr/share/fonts/truetype by copying it there with: sudo cp GillSans.ttc /usr/share/fonts/truetype and then attempting to "install" it by updating the font cache: sudo fc-cache -fv That appears to complete successfully, however, the font never seems to be available to either Libre Office, nor fontmatrix. In addition, I tried adding the font to my .fonts directory, thinking that I was somehow seeing a cache of just user supplied fonts, but that isn't the case. The file is a .ttc file, is there some other tools I need to use to extract each font from the .ttc, or is there something else I must do to use a .ttc? Nothing appears to have any issue with the file, but it could be silently failing to do anything. I've looked for the answer in other places, but the only time that a similar question was asked, it did not appear to be answered, so I figured I would ask the question differently and see if anyone else might be able to clue me in on how to use a .ttc font file, if that is possible. A related question, are there any tools to see what font families/font names are contained within a .ttc font file?

  • How do you keep down your urge to learn many things [closed]

    One of the difficulties i have is to lower my urge to learn new things (Languages, tools, frameworks etc.). I know it's good to stay the bleeding edge, but at the same time i want to learn things properly. I really see that i need to strike a balance between staying bleeding edge and knowing things properly. For example: Before choosing Arch (Desktop), Ubuntu(Server) and Knoppix(Portable) -- depending on situation -- as favourite distributions. Virtually i have tried all popular linux distributions. You name any popular linux (Redhat, Ubuntu, Arch, Suse, Knoppix, Slax, Slackware) i have tried it for some time. In fact i have spent few years experimenting the operating systems. Before choosing Python, Javascript (nodejs). I have tried all the languages i cameacross Scala, Haskell, Erlang, Ruby, Python, Perl, Scheme. Same applies for database. All popular db RDBMS (Oracle, Mysql, Postgres, SQLite[Favourite] etc) and NoSQL (Mongo, Couch, Neo4j etc.). Advantages i see: We get a overall picture of the technologies/tools/languages. It's useful to select the right tool for the job. We develop a taste and choose the One we like. Disadvantages: I feel that i spend somuch time and see a need to strike a balance. In summary, for e.g. If i see a blog post in HackerNews about CofeeScript i will try it out irrespective of what i am currently learning (Say Haskell). I switch back to learning Haskell, then again i see DART i check it out. And this continues.. Effectively i take more time to learn Haskell, but learnt about other new stuff on the way. The quetion i have is how do you strike a balance between staying bleeding edge and learning properly.

    Here is also an instruction on how you can integrate Java ME SDK 3.2 with Eclipse. You need additional steps for Eclipse Juno, because it does automatically detect and download MTJ (Mobile Tools for Java) plugin. The following instruction is for Eclipse Indigo. 1. Download Java ME SDK and Eclipse plugins from here. 2. Install Java ME SDK 3. Launch Eclipse 4. Go to "Help" - "Install New Software" 5. Click "Archive", and choose the Eclipse Plugin zip file you downloaded. Name is something like "Java ME SDK Plugin" 6. Choose Java ME SDK Tools, and select "Next". 7. It will calculate requirements and dependencies. Simply follow the instruction. 8. You may also have to manually install the platform.   • List of Asus U46 laptop troubles with Ubuntu 12.04

    I've bought my ASUS U46 last february. I would like to make it work better with Ubuntu 12.04. Note taht I was forced to install Ubuntu 12.04 (before its publication) by ethernet. After a successfull install, several problem remain unfixed such as : USB 3 just does not work correctly. Can be fixed, but I didn't succeed yet. Nvidia Optimus (means that you can use Intel Chipset or the Nvidia GeForce) is possible to use thanks to BumbleBee project. It seems to work, though. But Nvidia tools still say they don't see any Nvidia driver installed. Battery duration can be optimised by using Laptop-tools. Any standby state lead to a X server crash. A good CTRL+ALT+F1 login and "shutdown -r" avoids a brutal power off. And since few weeks, I have some bug reports right after boot about "unattended-upgrade", and dpkg troubles after any apt-get install or update (Linux kernel doesn't compile anymore), ... Are there any ways to fix those troubles ? I would need a bit of assistance, in fact. Thank you for you help, Sincerly yours, Thibault

  • Database development/admin - What exactly should I be trying to learn? [closed]

    I've been a bit weary about approaching learning databases. I've dabbled into them before, and "DATA" in itself appeals to me a lot. Maintaining/searching/moving, everything about it in the abstract sense I love. (This isn't a career question, this is a learning question.) But as RDBMS's begin to be easier to maintain, and with tools that "anyone" can use to manage data I feared for the database admin jobs. (Yet I see jobs for SQL everywhere!). I know "No-SQL" was a big deal but it kinda has its niche. But that leaves me here... unsure of really "what" to study. What tools should I have in my tool belt? I'm sure RDBMS's will be around in both use and maintaining legacy code. But what else? Obviously data will always be around, but is this a secure field or a dying one? And what should I be concentrating on?

    Hi, So I've followed this tutorial to setup unit testing on my app when I got a little stuck. At bullet point 8 in that tutorial it shows this image, which is what I should be expecting when I build: However this isn't what I get when I build. I'm guessing I've set something up wrong here but I've just followed a tutorial 100% correctly!! If anyone could help I'd be very grateful! Thanks EDIT: According to this blog, this post and a few other websites, I'm not the only one getting this problem. It has been like this since the release of xCode 3.2, assuming the apple dev center documents and tutorials etc are pre-3.2 as well. However some say its a known issue whereas others seem to think this was intentional. I for one would like both the extended console and in code messages, and I certainly do not like the "Command /bin/sh..." error and really think they would have documented such an update. Hopefully it will be fixed soon anyway. UPDATE: Here's confirmation it's something changed since the release of xCode 3.2.1. This image: is from my test build using 3.2.1.   • Flex SDK missing fundamental things

    All of a sudden Flash Builder 4 is missing all kinds of fundamental things and is generating incorrect errors. I've had the same issue yesterday, where I fixed it by downloading a new Flex SDK and importing that into FB. I did this again, but this time it fixed nothing. I don't think it's something I did, like removing critical references from the build path. The errors also appeared on projects I was not working on at the time. It occurs for ActionScript, Flex and Flex Library projects alike. Update 3: Well, i've singled the problem down to a single piece of code, though a very simple one. I can make a new workspace in FB and things work ok, then screw the workspace up forever by adding this code to a project. All projects will have errors and closing or even removing the faulty project does not change this. Making another new workspace (without the faulty code) makes my projects compile again.     I am working now on a project. I have 2 draggable textView in a circle. I want to add those value inside the circle when the circle is drag over the other circle. the first option that I have is to get the X and Y of the circle, but I get it. Can anyone fix my code? But why am I getting this extra build fail? It may also be of note that when downloading solutions/templates which should work out the box, I get the same error. I'm guessing I've set something up wrong here but I've just followed a tutorial 100% correctly!! If anyone could help I'd be very grateful! Thanks EDIT: According to this blog, this post and a few other websites, I'm not the only one getting this problem. It has been like this since the release of xCode 3.2, assuming the apple dev center documents and tutorials etc are pre-3.2 as well. However some say its a known issue whereas others seem to think this was intentional. I for one would like both the extended console and in code messages, and I certainly do not like the "Command /bin/sh..." error and really think they would have documented such an update. Hopefully it will be fixed soon anyway. UPDATE: Here's confirmation it's something changed since the release of xCode 3.2.1. This image: is from my test build using 3.2.1.     I have login/signup popups on my site which are in hidden div by default. According to http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1547426/google-seo-and-hidden-elements googlebot should NOT see it. But Google Webmaster tool says that keywords "email" and "password" are top keywords over the site. Why it is so? Why google bot sees them? Should I worry about relevancy of top keywords at all?
