• Programming language for web

  I haven't programmed in a while, and have kind of lost interest, but I want to get back, and I've enjoyed C# the most, a lot more than objective-c and visual basic. So I want to make some games that me and my friends will be able to play next school year. So basically something you can play on the web. What programming languages deploy to the web? If c# is possible, and a mac with safari/firefox would be able to use it (I can't install plugins, and I don't want to get in trouble for making myself admin again) Flash, Java, etc. If java does, I'd like that most since it's most like c#. Then what libraries/engines would I use? I want to do 2d. And then what IDE would I use? Thanks in advance!

• Which C# 4.0 Book would you purchase, and why?

  I'm currently looking at purchasing a few C# 4.0 books, namely: Essential C# 4.0 by Mark Michaelis or C# 4.0 Unleashed by Bart De Smet. I am aware that both books are yet to be released, but would you consider purchasing either of these books, or would you recommend another? Thanks for your time. Clarification: I'm not a .net Ninja, but I do have 8+ years experience with the framework & related languages. So I'm generally looking for in-depth books. I also train/instruct the rest of my organisation generally 6 - 12 months after each .net release. Each of the developers I train has the same or more .net experience then myself.   first off, is there a such thing as a random access random number generator, where you could not only sequentially generate random numbers as we're all used to, assuming rand100() always generates a value from 0-100: for (int i=0;i<5;i++) print rand100() output: 14 75 36 22 67 but also randomly access any random value like: rand100(0) would output 14 as long as you didn't change the seed rand100(3) would always output 22 rand100(4) would always output 67 and so on... I've actually found an open-source generator algorithm that does this, but you cannot change the seed. I know that pseudorandomness is a complex field; I wouldn't know how to alter it to add that functionality. Is there a seedable random access random number generator, preferably open source? or is there a better term for this I can google for more information? if not, part 2 of my question would be, is there any reliably random open source conventional seedable pseudorandom number generator so I could port it to multiple platforms/languages while retaining a consistent sequence of values for each platform for any given seed?

• Suggestions for a mashup application

  I have to write a mashup application for an university course and I have to use some APIs, but I need to choose by myself what to use and what the final application should do. Unfortunately I never made an application like this, so I'm not sure what to do... I don't want to code a stupid app which uses google maps' APIs since the web seems to be full of stuff like this. Have you got any suggestion for me? Is there any mashup web app you want that's still not there?? I can use JAVA, GWT (and google app engine of course) or python, but I also accept suggestions for other languages. Thank you in advance!

• Is there a way to formerly define a time interval for configuring a process?

  Horrible worded question...I know. I'm working on an application that processes data for the previous day. The problem is that I know the customer is going to eventually ask to it for every hour or some other arbitrary time interval. I know that languages such as Java or SQL have masks for defining dates. Well what about a way to define a time interval? Let me ask it this way. If someone asked you to create a configurable piece of software how would you allow the user to specify the time intervals?

• Gtk+ vs Qt language bindings

  Put shortly: For those familiar with language bindings in Qt and Gtk+. E.g. python and ruby. Are there any quality or capability difference? More background: I know C++ and Qt very well. Minimal experience with Gtk+. I know C++ is not ideal for language bindings due to the lack of a well defined ABI (application binary interface). I also read that Gtk+ was designed to be bound to other languages. So I wonder how this manifets itself in practice. Are the Gtk+ bindings better maintained or work better in some way than their Qt counterparts? I am presently quite interested in the Go language, and they have started developing Gtk+ bindings. However C++ bindings is far away. It makes me wonder whether learning Gtk+ is worth it.

• Will being self-taught limit me?

  I'm 21 and am pretty efficient in html/css, python, and javascript. I also know my way around lisp languages and enjoy programing in them. My problem is that I'm extremely self-taught and not quite confident that I could land a job programing, but I really need a job soon as I've just become a father. I haven't even created a resume yet because I'm not really sure what to put on it except my lone experience. So I wanted to ask, will being primarily self-taught with some experience on small projects I've done for a few clients limit me too much? I mean I know I need some kind of education so I've enrolled part time in a community college to work on a degree in computer science, but it's years till then. And if it will limit me a lot, what kind of skills would be good to work on to make my chances any better? Thank You

• Storing i18n data in a database using XML

  Hello, I may have to store some i18n-ed data in my database using XML if I don't fight back. That's not my choice, but it's in the specifications I have to follow. We would have, by example, something like following in a 'Country' column: <lang='fr'>Etats-Unis</lang> <lang='en'>United States</lang> This would apply to many columns in the database. I don't think it's a good idea at all. I tend to think that a cell in a database should represent a single piece of data (better for look-up), and that the database should have two dimensions maximum and not 3 or more (one request more would be required per dimension / a dimension here would be equal to the number of XML attributes). My idea was to have a separate table for all the translations, with columns such as : ID / Language / Translation. However, I should admit that I'm really not sure what is the best way to store data in various languages in a DB... Thanks for your advices :)

• Good Front end for PostgreSQL on Windows or Mac

  I'm considering using postgreSQL 8.4x db on windows/Mac for development and linux for production. wondering what front-end tools are out there that are comparable to Toad (for Oracle) ? PostgreSQL comes with PgAdminIII. It's OK but I feel there might be something better than that. I prefer free or open source but if something is NOT too expensive(we are a NON-PROFIT), would not mind evaluating. minimal tools that I want 1) connection manager 2) Nice SQL Editor 3) Explain Plan 4) help with SQL embedding into various languages. 5) E-R diagrams would be good but this would not be a killer feature for me.   I use ResourceManager for UI localization of my WinCE 5 software. I have some resource files with text strings on different languages Resourse.resx Resourse.de-DE.resx Resourse.ru-RU.resx When I want to display UI in English I call: Resourse.Culture = new CultureInfo("en-US"); label1.Text = Resourse.LabelText; in German: Resourse.Culture = new CultureInfo("de-DE"); label1.Text = Resourse.LabelText; in Russian: Resourse.Culture = new CultureInfo("ru-RU"); label1.Text = Resourse.LabelText; but here I get PlatformNotSupportedException. I know that my WinCE does not contain Russian and I cannot modify OS to appened this, so my question is how I can say to ResourceManger to use Resourse.ru-RU.resx when I set Culture = new CultureInfo("ru-RU") ?

• Longest keyword chain?

  As I was typing some constants in Java I noticed I had used 4 keywords in a row, which Eclipse highlighted for me: public static final int. I then took a break from my regular coding and asked myself (and google with no relevant results) what the longest chain of keywords I can use and still have valid code. After a while, the best I could come up with was this method definition: public synchronized static final strictfp int a() { ... which is 6 keywords in Java. Is it possible to go 7, or even higher? What about other languages?

• Does the .NET CLR Really Optimize for the Current Processor

  When I read about the performance of JITted languages like C# or Java, authors usually say that they should/could theoretically outperform many native-compiled applications. The theory being that native applications are usually just compiled for a processor family (like x86), so the compiler cannot make certain optimizations as they may not truly be optimizations on all processors. On the other hand, the CLR can make processor-specific optimizations during the JIT process. Does anyone know if Microsoft's (or Mono's) CLR actually performs processor-specific optimizations during the JIT process? If so, what kind of optimizations?

  I am trying to write a program that will verify that all cookies sent out from the machine are in fact going to the domain they came from. This is part of a larger security project to detect cookie based malicious attacks (such as XSS). The main snag for this project is actually detecting the out-going cookies. Can someone point me in the right direction for monitoring out-going HTTP traffic for cookie information? • Web Application Translation, methods and tools

  I've developed a web application. It needs to be translated to languages other than English in the future, and ideally the translators shouldn't need to know HTML/JS/C++ to provide the translation. The server side of the web application is written in C++ and the majority of the localised text is in the HTML files. My question is: What approaches are there to translating web applications? - Are there any existing tools that would enable a translator who doesn't understand HTML to translate a site? Should I write an application that extracts the localised text from a html file and can re-substitute translated text? Do you just provide the html file to your translators to be localised? I'm aware the question isn't strictly programming related but the solution may involve programming and it may require some software engineering.

  [I'm working in Ruby, but my question is valid for other languages as well.] I have a Mechanize-driven application. The server I'm talking to sets a cookie using javascript (rather than standard set-cookie), so Mechanize doesn't catch the cookie. I need to pass that cookie back on the next GET request. • Why Switch/Case and not If/Else If?

  This question in mainly pointed at C/C++, but I guess other languages are relevant as well. I can't understand why is switch/case still being used instead of if/else if. It seems to me much like using goto's, and results in the same sort of messy code, while the same results could be acheived with if/else if's in a much more organized manner. Still, I see these blocks around quite often. A common place to find them is near a message-loop (WndProc...), whereas these are among the places when they raise the heaviest havoc: variables are shared along the entire block, even when not propriate (and can't be initialized inside it). Extra attention has to be put on not dropping break's, and so on... Personally, I avoid using them, and I wonder wether I'm missing something? Are they more efficient than if/else's? Are they carried on by tradition?

Every day I feel I solve something that I'll surely hit again in a not so distant future, but by then I most certainly will have forgotten about the previous solution I came up with. So I need to blog it down, quick and dirty, for my own documentation and memory's sake. Must be easy to set up and use. Must handle code syntax and highlighting gracefully for a number of languages, but mainly C# and C++. Must be PHP-based, because that's what my host supplies. I know and have used WordPress (not for code, though), but is it really what I want or need?

• Version control for Adobe Flash projects

  I'm working with a very complex Flash project which is part of a full range of services that we deploy for the use of our clients. For most of our software sources (Java, PHP, Javascript, HTML and a some supporting scripts in other languages) we use subversion for version control and management, so we do the same for our Flash projects, even though we gain little benefits from version controlling that (except being able revert to previous versions) as FLA files are stored as just binaries which we cannot get meaningful diffs from. We're putting as much code as we can into AS files which we can properly manage using subversion, but due to the requirements of our architecture and our deployment strategy (both we cannot change because of our clients needs), we still maintain a large collection of FLA files that we need to manage. I've looked at Adobe Version Cue and while I do not really understand what it does in terms of version control, will moving our Flash projects to hosting on Version Cue will give me better control then I currently get from Subversion? Also - if people can share their experience and suggestions regarding version control of Flash projects, it will be very helpful.

• SQLAlchemy custom sorting algorithms when using SQL indexes

  Is it possible to write custom collation functions with indexes in SQLAlchemy? SQLite for example allows specifying the sorting function at a C level as sqlite3_create_collation(). An implementation of some of the Unicode collation algorithm has been provided by James Tauber here, which for example sorts all the "a"'s close together whether they have accents on them or not. Other examples of why this might be useful is for different alphabet orders (languages other than English) and sorting numeric values (sorting 10 after 9 rather than codepoint order.) Is this possible in SQLAlchemy? If not, is it supported by the pysqlite3 or MySQLdb modules, or for any other SQL database modules supported by python for that matter? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

• Useful ways for multilanguage navigation and static content on your site?

  Hi, I have a big site running under Apache and PHP and in few mounths I should consider to add some different language version of it, but I'm not sure about the right way (or ways). My problem it isn't the user data, because I can use db tables with different languages (en, de, it, etc.) so I want concentrate my answer on navigation and static content. For now I can't use gettext because I don't have a dedicated server and I can't reboot it every time I want, but surely will be a future choice. So my main problems are these: In the site, I have classical XHTML elements like the menus, lists, div and various static texts in various pages (should be perferct for gettext, but I need a alternative) The other part of the sites has XHTML elements which are dynamically created via AJAX and jQuery, and here I haven't any idea of what can I do... So does exists some example I can see in some link to solve it (or some useful tecnique)?

• Can we represent bit fields in JSON/BSON?

  We have a dozen simulators talking to each other on UDP. The interface definition is managed in a database. The simulators are written using different languages; mostly C++, some in Java and C#. Currently, when systems engineer makes changes in the interface definition database, simulator developers manually update the communication data structures in their code. The data is mostly 2-5 bytes with bit fields for each signal. What I want to do is to generate one file from interface definition database describing byte and bit field definitions and let each developer add it to his simulator code with minimal fuss. I looked at JSON/BSON but couldn't find a way to represent bit fields in it. Thanks Zubair

• Fetch main model and translations in one query with globalize2

  Is there a way to fetch the model and the translations in one query when using globalize2? For example, having a model called Language which have two fields, code and name of which the second is translatable I do the following: en = Language.find_by_code("en") and it runs this query: SELECT SQL_NO_CACHE * FROM `languages` WHERE (`languages`.`code` = 'en') LIMIT 1 and when I do: en.name it runs: SELECT SQL_NO_CACHE * FROM `language_translations` WHERE (`language_translations`.language_id = 123 AND (`language_translations`.`locale` IN ('en','root'))) and if I do it again it'll re-run the query. Is there a way to fetch all the translated data in the first query? I've tried: en = Language.find_by_code("en", :joins => "JOIN language_translations ON language_translations.language_id = languages.id") but it made no difference.
