• Remove identical files in UNIX

  Hi all, I'm dealing with a large amount (30,000) files of about 10MB in size. Some of them (I estimate 2%) are actually duplicated, and I need to keep only a copy for every duplicated pair (or triplet). Would you suggest me an efficient way to do that? I'm working on unix. Thank you :-)

If I use something like: printDocument.PrintPage += OnPrintPage; printDocument.Print(); my printing task size in printer queue takes more than 1 GB!   I'm deciding how to split 3 large sphinx indexes between 3 servers. Each of the 3 indexes is searched separately. What's more effective: to host each index on separate machine Example machine1 - index1 machine2 - index2 machine3 - index3 or to split each index into 3 parts and host each part of the same index on separate machine. • How to verify a jQuery plugin is compatible with latest version of jQuery?

  Are there any tools that can verify whether a jQuery plugin will be compatible with the latest version of jQuery? Once a large number of jQuery plugins are selected and in use, an unknown number of dependencies can develop. It would be nice to upgrade jQuery, however not all plugins remain supported or provide consistently architected upgrades. The only option seems to be adhoc manual regression testing. It would be nice to have a strategy for dealing with this issue.

  I use pthreads_attr_getthreadsizes() to get default stack size of one thread, 8MB on my machine. But when I create 8 threads and allocate a very large stack size to them, say hundreds of MB, the program crash. So, I guess, shall ("Number of threads" x "stack size of per thread") shall less than a value(virtual memory size)?

• Can a memory page be moved by modifying the page table?

  Is it possible (on any reasonable OS, preferably Linux) to swap the contents of two memory pages by only modifying the page table and not actually moving any data? The motivation is a dense matrix transpose. If the data were blocked by page size it would be possible to transpose the data within a page (fits in cache) then swap pages to move the blocks into their final place. A large matrix would have many many pages moved, so hopefully flushing the TLB wouldn't cause trouble.

• Index a set of files to search their text quickly?

  I have a unique need: I am frequently searching a large set of text files for a keyword. Right now, I open up Notepad++ and use the "Find in files" feature. It works just fine, but with the amount of files, each search takes several minutes to complete. Is there a good program more suited for this purpose, perhaps that indexes a set of files and then lets you search the set repeatedly and very quickly? It would greatly speed up my workflow.

  I'm hashing a large number of files, and to avoid hash collisions, I'm also storing a file's original size - that way, even if there's a hash collision, it's extremely unlikely that the file sizes will also be identical. Is this sound (a hash collision is equally likely to be of any size), or do I need another piece of information (if a collision is more likely to also be the same length as the original). Or, more generally: Is every file just as likely to produce a particular hash, regardless of original file size?

  I'm considering using JRuby on App Engine but have heard that Juby app on App Engine have a long startup lag. Why is this? Is it because the JRuby jar files are so large that a cold startup requires them to be loaded into memory before the app can start serving?
