  • Remembering window's location and desktops on Mac OS X

    When I use my Mac, I like have a standard windows organization to do my Work: I put 4 consoles opened side by side on console 1 I put Safari in other Mail and iCal in another TextMate on other etc And depending on the work I do, I'd like to have different window configuration. And when I have a external monitor connected, I need another configuration. Is there any tool to make this? What is the best way to do it?

  • Western Digital Smartware not detect External HDD

    Hi people, i recently buy WD Mybook Essential HDD 1 TB. I downloaded and install Smartware software in both my desktop (windows xp) and laptop (Windows 7) but in both case the s/w is not able to detect the external hard disc. It shows desktop/laptop (Whichever is apt) on left hand side of software but not the hard drive on right side. Why so? i need to install smartware s/w as my friend had gave me which i suppose had deleted the software. please help me thanks

  • File associations not present in Microsoft Office 2010

    The error when trying to open MS Office is that there is no file association & another error when trying to open individual progs is - side bt side configuration is incorrect. The suite has been working perfectly until last week ( no significant changes to system ) I have tried downloading the VC++ & uninstalled & reinstalled twice, even deleted the registry entry for office 2010 before reinstall but have had no success. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Weird IIS with Windows Authentication + IE problem

    Hello. I have a website running on IIS and using Windows Authentication. All users that are configured to get access to the site are form a AD domain (not local users). In the properties of a Website, I have set to use the AD domain as the realm. Now, when using Firefox, Safari or Chrome - Everything is fine. When the user tries to open the site, he get's the login box. he enters simply "username" and "password" (let's pretend that it's an actual login and password :P) and he get's into the site. When using IE, however, things get nasty. When the user tries to open the site - he get's the login box. User enters the "username" and "password" again, but those get rejected! And when the second time login box pops up - it has the username filled in as "web-server-domain-name\username" which is wrong, because web-server-domain-name is not the domain where all users reside (it's "ad-domain"). I've spent days trying to figure out what's going on... Note, that if I manually enter "ad-domain\username" - I get accepted into the site without problems. So, my guess is that IE sends wrong username if domain is not specified. Anyway, IE is the only browser that triggers this behavior! Is it possible to do a server-side fix? Maybe it's possible to somehow auto-map the users to AD users? If it's not solvable server-side - is there a client-side fix for this? Thank you. PS: I'm more of a programmer than a sys-admin, so configuring servers isn't the strong side of mine... :P UPDATE: @Evan: Yes, "Digest authentication for Windows domain servers" is also enabled. @Eric: IIS version is 6.0. The authentication methods enabled are: Integrated and digest - all other methods are disabled. As for the security log. I looked at it, when doing "username" and "password" login in Chrome/Firefox and when doing "ad-domain\username" and "password" login from IE - the generated log messages are the same (I see no difference, anyway). When entering "username" and "password" I don't see any errors in the security (or any other) log, so can't tell what method it's trying to use. UPDATE 2: As suggested by Eric in the comments - I played around with Fiddler... While playing with it, I noticed, that when "username" and "password" is entered in FF and IE - the "Authorization" header value (encrypted) sent by IE is longer (almost two times) than one sent by FF. I tried to disable Windows Integrated authentication and only leave the Digest enabled - that fixed the problem (meaning, IE used the right realm just like other browsers), but that caused bazillion other problems with my site, because with Digest - user impersonation on the server doesn't work (that causes problems, when connecting to database etc). Any ideas?

  • File Access problems with SLES 10 SP2 OES2 SP1

    We have identified a couple of repeatable, demonstrable scenarios with unexplained rejected folder access on our servers for Mac users. Hopefully, this can be presented to Novell for a solution. What we did to demonstrate scenario 1; 1. setup a PC and Mac side-by-side 2. login to our server and open up to a central location on both Mac and PC 3. on the PC in that central location create a folder 4. on the Mac in that central location drag the created folder to the Mac desktop, this should work fine, no problem 5. on the PC rename that folder 6. on the Mac drag a file to that renamed folder, this should error with the following message; a. You cannot copy some of these items to the destination because their names are too long for the destination. Do you want to skip copying these items and continue copying the other items? b. Select skip, response is the filename is copied to the location with zero or small byte size. Try opening it and you get file is corrupted error message. What we did to demonstrate scenario 2; 1. setup a PC and Mac side-by-side 2. login to our server and open up to a central location on both Mac and PC 3. on the PC in that central location create a folder then create a subfolder 4. copy some content into the subfolder 5. on the Mac in that central location drag the created top level folder to the Mac desktop, this should work fine, no problem 6. on the PC rename that subfolder 7. on the Mac drag that top level folder to the Mac desktop, this should error on the Mac with the following; a. The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for b. The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for 8. on the Mac, if you open that subfolder you can see the file copied in step 4 above but, you can not open that file, you get the following message if you try; a. There was an error opening this document. You do not have permission to open this file. 9. on the PC drag some content into the top level folder 10. on the Mac you can open that file directly from the server or copy it locally, no problem, however-the subfolder is still corrupted or locked, whichever 11. on the PC rename the top level folder 12. on the Mac that same file just opened in step 10 above is now not accessible, get the following message; a. The document could not be opened. I have observed some variances in the above. For instance, a change on the PC side may take a moment before you can observer or act on the Mac side - kind of like the server is slow to respond. Also, the error message may vary. However, the key is once a folder, or subfolder, gets renamed by a PC, Mac problems commence. The solution is to create a new folder from a PC and copy the contents of the corrupted folder to the new folder and not rename the folder name. This has to be done on a PC because the corrupted folder is not accessible by a Mac user. Another problem that dovetails with the above is that we know certain characters are not allowed for PC folder or filenames. If a Mac user creates a folder with a slash in the file name, from the PC the user does not see that slash in the name. As soon as the PC user copies a file to that folder, the Mac user is locked from that folder. Will get the following error message; - Sorry, the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred. - (Error code - 50) In addition to the above mentioned character issue with folders, the problem is more evil with filenames. If, for example, you create a file with a slash in the filename on a Mac and copy it to the server you will get the following error message; - You cannot copy some of these items to the destination because their names are too long for the destination. Do you want to skip copying these items and continue copying the other items? Select either Stop or Skip buttons. It does not matter which button is selected. The file name gets copied to the destination location at a reduced size. Depending on the file type, the icon associated with the file may or may not be present. Furthermore, if you open that file on the server you will get the following message; - Couldnt open the file. It may be corrupt or a file format that doesnt recognize. From the users perspective, if they are not observant of the icon or file size, they may disregard the error message and think their file has copied as intended. Only later do they discover the file is corrupt if they open that file. I want to make a note on this problem. It is the PC causing the issue. You can change folder and file names all day on a MAC and you don't have a problem as long as a character is not the issue. Once you change the file name or folder name from a PC the entire folder structure from that level down is corrupted. But it has to be resolved from a PC by creating a new folder and copying the contents to the new folder like stated above. Is something not configured correctly?   • Integrated Help - Merged Help Indexes

    If anyone has had more than a couple of Microsoft tools or products installed (or a local install of the MSDN library) side by side, you might have noticed that opening help (hitting F1) or opening, say, SQL Server Books Online causes the help indexes to be re-indexed - this is usually after installing a new product or tool. This can be a really, really time consuming exercise! Does anyone know a way to prevent or opt out of having combined help indexes? At best, even just preventing the reindexing at all?

  • Windows 8 Doesn't Shutdown Properly With Fast Start-Up Enabled

    While Fast start-up is enabled, on turning the computer off (shutdown) the computer idles for about 5min after logging out/screen turning off. It then turns off. On returning into Windows I receive the error message saying Windows didn't shut down properly. Hibernate works fine, and I am told this shouldn't be the case - If one doesn't work, neither should. It works when both Fast start-up is enabled and disabled, as does restart and sleep. Windows is installed under UEFI. The UEFI ultra fast boot option for my motherboard cannot be enabled as my GPU doesn't support some UEFI GOP tech. As far as I know, not related to windows fast start-up, but thought it was worth mentioning. To clarify, if this: http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/6320-fast-startup-turn-off-windows-8-a.html is enabled, the computer does not shut down properly. EDIT: Some more information on the matter: Formatting didn't fix the issue. Still fails regardless of drivers installed. Hardware was purchased ~6months ago. Running a good SSD. Event viewer Always these two messages in close succession: Error (event ID 6008): The previous system shutdown at 7:45:21 PM on ?27/?10/?2012 was unexpected. Critical (kernel power, event ID 41): The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly. Upon installing WPT as suggested below to figure out what was happening during shutdown, and running the cmd xbootmgr -trace shutdown -noPrepReboot -traceFlags BASE+CSWITCH+DRIVERS+POWER -resultPath C:\TEMP Windows fast start-up is now working consistently. Still works upon uninstalling WPT. This is the only change to occur on the computer. Nothing else has bee installed/uninstalled, no Windows Updates, nothing. Windows fast start-up did not work prior to installing WPT and running the cmd (made sure I tested).

  • Mysterious OS X FileVault-related home directory

    I recently enabled FileVault on Snow Leopard, and after doing so, found a directory /Users/<myusername>.4529809818604982560, containing the original (unencrypted) contents of my home directory, owned by root:wheel with permissions 700, side-by-side with my normal home directory. Does anyone know why this was created (maybe a temporary backup that didn't get erased), or whether deleting it will be harmful?

  • Do certain usb ports work better on my IBM T60?

    Hi. I am using a Microsoft wireless phone ear piece and I have had the receiver plugged into the USB port on the Left Hand side. I have been getting intermittent success with the signal. I have recently tried plugging it in to one of the ports on the top Right Hand side, and it seems that I am getting a better signal. Is there a difference between the ports? Thanks.

  • apache log analysis tools for multiple virtual hosts?

    I am interested in trying to get a side by side usage comparison of all the virtual hosts being served up by my apache server. In the simplest case, I want to see a list (or bar chart) with each virtual host and the number of requests/traffic on that site. I've been playing around with webalyzer and awstats but I haven't been able to compare multiple virtual hosts in the same infographic. Anyone have any suggestions on tools for doing this (or how I might use the above tools to do so)?

  • What are these CPU cache settings? Snoop Filter, ACL prefetch, HW prefetch

    I was in my BIOS setup turning on VT-x support today and saw these other settings. A little googling indicates that they each seem to turn on some sort of optimization to do with the CPU's L2 cache. They were all turned off by default. The processor in question is an Intel Xeon quad-core 3.4GHz (X5492). My OS is Linux 2.6.35.10-74.fc14.x86_64 #1 SMP Thu Dec 23 16:04:50 UTC 2010 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux. I have 4GB of RAM if that matters. Here's what the BIOS manufacturer has to say: Snoop Filter Enabling the snoop filter typically improves performance by reducing snoop traffic on the frontside bus in dual processor configurations. Well I like the sound of improved performance. Why would the BIOS have this off by default? Or by dual processor do they not mean multi-core? Regardless, is there a downside if this is on? ACL Prefetch When enabled, the Adjacent Cache Line Prefetcher fetches both cache lines that comprise a cache line pair when it determines required data is not currently in its cache. When disabled, the processor will only fetch the cache line required by the processor. HW Prefetch Fetches an extra line of data into L2 from external memory. Both of these sound like optimizations that have some drawbacks. What are the reasons to turn them on? What are the reasons to leave them off. Why is the default off?

  • A kinetic mouse lag when connecting to a TV via HDMI

    I've been unable to find out what is causing a mouse cursor lag when I'm using my Win7 laptop connected to a 1080p TV via HDMI. The symptom can be described as the cursor feeling 'heavy'. When I'm using the TV screen as an extension to the desktop, there is no lag on the laptop side of the desktop. It does not feel like a refresh rate problem: for example scrolling a big web page on the TV side is pretty OK. Strange huh? Help appreciated!

  • WiFi signal is lost every 3 minutes

    For several weeks now my Android phone has been losing it's WiFi signal momentarily, typically at about 3 minute intervals (about 3 minutes, 1.5 seconds) and occasionally at some longer interval that always seems to be just over 3 minutes. This causes an interruption of several seconds while the WiFi connection is re-established and typically fails any kind of download/streaming that is happening, makes web sites "unreachable" and generally makes the phone unusable as a data device due to the frequency. The signal remains down for about a second, but the phone takes a few more seconds to reconnect to the router. This happens regardless of proximity to the router, which otherwise show a very strong signal - usually -40 to -30 dBm or better in the same room, nowhere less than 060 dBm anywhere in the house. Changing channels does not help (I've tried 1, 4, 8 and 9). Nor does turning off the router's guest access. Nor does turning off the 5.0 GHz band. Monitoring the signal on my phone with WiFi analyzer, shows all WiFi signals on all channels drop to nothing when the WiFi connection is lost (there are two other networks on different channels which are strong enough to be relevant, with about 6 others constantly fading in and out). WiFi analyzer shows 3 separate signals for my router, the main 2.4 GHz, the guest 2.4 GHz and the 5.0 GHz. Using WiFi Analyzer on my wife's phone side-by-side shows no change in signal when my phone drops, nor does her phone drop. Monitoring the signal using our laptop, side-by-side likewise shows no signal loss and likewise the laptop does not lose it's WiFi connection. But, at work, the phone seems to not exhibit the same behavior, or, if it does, it's very occasional. Monitoring it all day at work I only saw the signal drop 3 or 4 times. The signal strength of the various networks there is comparatively weak. AT&T were super helpful: "Sorry, we can't help you with WiFi problems. You could try doing a factory reset on your phone". </sarcasm The router is relatively new, but has been working fine with this phone since last Dec. Phone : Motorola Atrix (about 8 months old). Router : Belkin N750 DB (F9K1103 v1 (01C)). Router Firmware: 1.00.46 (2011/10/28 6:37:11). Security : WPA/WPA2-Personal (PSK)

  • wireless router - configuring for low-latency, high traffic environment

    Hey all, I have a few questions about configuring a router to achieve low-latency, high speed throughput on a local area network that is not connected to the internet. I've read up on some stuff, but thought I would solicit some opinions here on what I've found and what I want to know.... Turn off SSID broadcast - it produces extraneous packets that all clients receive and reply (?) to. Not a huge deal, but it may help a bit. Mixed-mode off - I should attempt to have all devices using the same standard (e.g. 802.11n) and turn mixed-mode off. Any thoughts on security? Does having WEP or any of the WPA variants actually increase latency? Nothing super secure is going over this LAN so if turning security off made things better, that'd be cool. Any other thoughts or things to focus on to create the low latency environment I'm trying to go for would be great. Links to webpages and papers are also cool. I'm open to go through a bunch of stuff. Thanks in advance!

But I would now like to add a web-frontend for the subversion server. I therefore added the lines <Location "/web"> DAV off Order allow,deny Allow from all </Location> But they don't work, as the <Location "/">...</Location> part is directing the requests to the SVN/DAV module. Therefore, apache tells that it couldn't open the requested SVN-filsystem. Does anybody know how to override this setting? Any hint is appreciated.

I have a client from whom I have developed a PHP based Facebook project, who is hosting their site on IIS with ASP and no access to PHP, so they have created a sub domain to point to my server to host the site. I have an SSL on www.mydomain.com, but their sub domain does not have SSL (app.theirdomain.com). Would redirection from their side be possible to SSL on my side so that the FB app works?

    Hi all, I have a question concerning hard disk permission after Using boot camp, i have a macbook pro 17 i7, 500gb, yesterday i installed window 7 ultimate in 80 gb (bootcamp) ntfs offcourse. I was testing my HD permission since i found that the start up is slow in mac side. I found there's alot of changes in permissions is that normal or i should to repair all this permission problems, need to mention that from Windows side i can see my mac drive which i don't want...
