  • Sleep or Hibernate for a laptop

    I was wondering whether it is better to put a laptop into sleep or hibernation in Windows 7, and suspend or hibernate in Ubuntu: when carrying the laptop in a backpack and walking or slow-running to another place in around 15 minutes, Or just when the lid is closed. My concerns are if the heat generated and accumulated and bumping from transmit will do harm to the laptop, and I can miss other important factors. Is sleep in Windows 7 same as suspend in Ubuntu?     Not sure the title is right. I have my site configured in IIS7 and I have another partner site which runs on a different port eg. http:// localhost:1234 /mysite. Can I have my parent site to have a virtual site http:// localhost /mysite to route requests to the partner site http://localhost:1234 /mysite. I should not redirect but I should basically proxy the requests. Any help here is appreciable. Thanks in advance.

  • how can I stop my sonicwall TZ-210 (SonicOS Enhanced 5.5.1.0-5o) from responding to arp queries on the wan subnet?

    My sonicwall TZ-210 is answering arp queries on the wan subnet (which my isp doesn't like), basically mapping all the wan ips to its own mac address, causing network havoc since it is not set to route those back to the main isp gateway. How the heck can I turn this behavior off? I have already entered in all wan subnet ips in the static arp cache and left them 'unpublished' which I presumed would mean that it did not bother answering arp queries for them. Apparently it did not do the trick. Arp queries are still being answered unfortunately. What can I do? Any suggestions?

    I'm trying to test Tomcat virtual hosts on my dev machine (windows 7/Tomcat 6). I'd like to have requests for localhost, test1.localhost and test2.localhost all route through to the same tomcat instance. I've edited my hosts file to look as follows: 127.0.0.1 localhost ::1 localhost 127.0.0.1 test1.localhost 127.0.0.1 test2.localhost And added modified the Engine in server.xml as follows: <Engine defaultHost="localhost" name="Catalina"> <Realm className="org.apache.catalina.realm.UserDatabaseRealm" resourceName="UserDatabase" /> <Host appBase="webapps" autoDeploy="true" name="localhost" unpackWARs="true" xmlNamespaceAware="false" xmlValidation="false"> <Alias>test1.localhost</Alias> <Alias>test2.localhost</Alias> </Host> </Engine> However, I'm getting a 404 when hitting test1.localhost:8080/myWebApp, although localhost:8080/myWebApp works fine. I can ping test1.localhost fine. What have I missed?

    I have varnish installed and I think it's working properly (not sure if it matters but I am using iptables reroute method to route ports incoming:80 > varnish:8080 > apache:80 Anyway, In varnishstat I see a pretty high Hitrate average (60-80%) which I am working on but I am unclear at what all of the stats presented by varnishstat Specifically the following Backend stats: 380 0.00 0.26 Backend conn. success 10122 15.00 6.85 Backend conn. reuses 267 0.00 0.18 Backend conn. was closed 10391 15.00 7.04 Backend conn. recycles I've read a blog post called "Varnishstat for dummies" which outlines a lot of details of varnishstat (I recommend it for beginners) but it does not go over these Backend stats. Feel free to explain here or link to a resource I've missed :) thanks!

Event Type: Error Event Source: MSExchangeTransport Event Category: (8) Event ID: 3017 Date: 4/29/2010 Time: 1:21:12 PM User: N/A Computer: NETSRV Description: A non-delivery report with a status code of 5.3.5 was generated for recipient rfc822;[email protected] (Message-ID <19104335.51321272561635734.JavaMail.SYSTEM@PARROT). Causes: A looping condition was detected. (The server is configured to route mail back to itself). If you have multiple SMTP Virtual Servers configured on your Exchange server, make sure they are defined by a unique incoming port and that the outgoing SMTP port configuration is valid to avoid looping between local virtual servers.   • mod_jk fails to detect error state because JBoss gives 404, not 500

    Configuration: Apache + mod_jk, several workers on other machines (load balancing). When JBoss fails to deploy an application for example because of failed connection to the database, requests to /myapp/somepage generate 404. How do I configure JBoss to return 500 for everything under /myapp when the application failed to deploy? Additional info: Since 404 is not an "error state" code, mod_jk does not mark the worker as failed and continues to route the traffic there. Since there might be valid requests to this application also generating 404, I can not configure mod_jk to treat 404 as an "error state"

  • Automatically connect to VPN when initiating RDP Remote Desktop connection and then disconnect VPN when done

    I know I can create a batch file to initiate a VPN connection followed by an RDP session, however I want to know if it's possible (in Windows 7 and ideally Windows XP as well) to have the VPN connection tied to the RDP session status. Scenario: user has to VPN first in order to be able to RDP. Ideally user would click one icon (batch file?) to initiate VPN connection and load RDP session. When they close the RDP session I want the VPN to then automatically disconnect so they don't accidentally route their subsequent non-RDP browsing + Internet activity through the VPN.

    I am faced with a Windows hardware/software problem left over from another person. It's on me to resolve. It's a mission critical setup. The situation is: I've got a physical server machine with: -Disk C:\ (one disk) containing a basic install of Windows Server 2008 R2, formerly Win Vista Pro, now gone. -Disk D:\ (software Raid) containing a VirtualBox disk image of a configured Windows Server 2008 R2 running SQL Server R2 among others. What shall I do now? Migrate all the stuff from the configured VM to the basic but natively installed C:\ Windows Server 2008 R2 (with the possibility of breaking stuff)? Or, Setting up the machine to "natively boot" the VM with the help of bcdedit.exe (something I've read about, what I've never done, what I don't know of if it works, if it hits performance, or if it is stable for production) For me, being old skool, I am in the process of de-virtualising everything (option 1). But I'd be happy if someone suggests I am ok to go down the "natively boot" route.

    Hello The venerable EccoPro offered a great in-place outliner to organize tasks into sub-tasks, and add a Due Date to any item so that they would be also displayed in the Calendar (and in a Palm pilot if the used had one). It seems like Outlook only supports a single-level task list: Is there an add-on to Outlook to do this, or another application than Outlook provided it's also capable of syncing with a BlackBerry?   • Single-port 2600 router with 2900XL switch

    I have a setup, where the single port 2600 router is in port 0/2 in the switch, outside network is on port 0/1, and the rest (0/3-0/24) should be clients for the second network that would be managed by the 2600 router. I configured everything with two VLANs: 100 for outside (0/2-0/24), 200 for inside (0/1-0/2). 0/2 is a trunk port for the two VLANs. The issue that came about is that I can't have two VLANs on at once: software doesn't allow it. Now, I can ping the outside network devices (172.16.7.1, 172.16.7.103), and even google (8.8.8.8) from the router, but not the switch. Devices on connected get a DHCP lease properly but can't ping outside the network, just the router - 172.17.7.1 and the switch itself, 172.17.7.7.     Is there any free software that will detect the status of internet and shutdown the system when the internet disconnects? Or (more generally) can something run a task when the internet disconnects, and I can route it to shutdown the machine? I am downloading things overnight. But my problem is that sometimes the internet connection will be disconnected in the middle of the night, so there is no point in keeping the system running the rest of the night. So I need to avoid this problem by detecting the net connectivity.

  • Multiple External IP Ranges on a Juniper SSG5

    I have a Juniper SSG 5 firewall in a datacenter. The first interface (eth0/0) has been assigned a static IP address and has three other addresses configured for VIP Nat. I have a static route configured at the lowest priority for 0.0.0.0/0 to my hosting company's gateway. Now I need to configure a second IP block. I have the IPs assigned to the second interface (eth0/1) which is in the same security zone and virtual router as the first. However, with this interface enabled I (a) can't initiate outbound sessions (browse the internet, ping, DNS lookup, etc) even though I can access servers behind the firewall just fine from the outside and (b) can't ping the management IP of the firewall/gateway. I've tried anything I can think of but I guess this is a little above my head. Could anyone point me in the right direction? For example, 10.0.0.17.55 specifies that the nameserver at 10.0.0.17 uses port 55. But it doesn't work, in /etc/resolv.conf or files under /etc/resolver/. 208.67.222.222.5353 Can I specify non-default port number for nameserver in osx? Update: osx don't use /etc/resolve.conf, but use files under /etc/resolver/. I have wrote a file dev with content '127.0.0.1' to route all dns queries for *.dev domains to a local dns server (127.0.0.). But I cannot specify dns server's port here. (It uses 53 anyway) Maybe there is no way to specify port number under osx?

    I was assigned a.b.c.10/30 (Public IP) for my router and given a.b.c.9 as the gateway. I was also assigned x.y.z.128/25 (Public IP block) for my use. I want to setup a Linux router to handle this situation. My Linux box has 3 NICs, eth0 is a.b.c.10, eth1 I have assigned x.y.z.254, eth2 is unused at present. I have eth1 connected to a network switch, and several devices connected. Let's say box A is x.y.z.129 with a gateway of x.y.z.254. I have not connected to the network yet, as it is not live. What settings do I need to make, beyond adding the 2 network definitions to the cards and having "route add default gw a.b.c.9 eth0"? I may add a private 192.168.100.0/24 lan to eth2 later.
