• Updating rows using "in" operator in "where" clause

  Hi. I stumbled upon SQL behavior I don't understand. I needed to update several rows in a table at once; started with just finding them: SELECT * FROM some_table WHERE field1 IN (SELECT ...) This returned a selection of about 60 rows. Now I was pretty confident I got the subquery right, so I modified the first part only: UPDATE some_table SET field2 = some_value WHERE field1 IN (SELECT ...) In other words, this was exactly as the first query after the WHERE. However, it resulted in 0 rows updated, whereas I would expect those 60. Note that the statement above would change field2, i.e. I verified that some_value was not present in the selected rows. The subquery was a modestly complicated SQL piece with 2 (different) tables, 1 view, joins and its own WHERE clause. In case this matters, it happened with Oracle Database 10g. So, the question is, why UPDATE didn't touch the rows returned by SELECT?

• Documenting software architectures that serve multiple markets

  Hello, I'm the lead developer/architect wanna-be on a J2EE based system/platform at work that serves both real estate and automotive markets. The systems consists of a set of database back ends, web services and two web clients. The platform ends up serving 3 different products: an internal vehicle inventory system for use by company analysts, an external dealer management system (commercialized product), and a real estate inventory system (commercialized). In other words, it follows a software product lines approach....My question is, I'm having trouble communicating to other technical and some business people how this platform architecture is one system that serves multiple markets (by leveraging some existing assets combined with minor modifications)....Is there a formal modeling language that can simplify communicating this intent? I should note that I haven't read much about software product lines, so I'm not sure if there is actually a standard modeling approach to SPL that i'm not aware of....I'm also interested in knowing if there are special configuration management practices for such systems. thanks,

• Search relevance from XML docs (XQuery?) vs MySQL

  Hello there, I have a website where documents are saved in xml documents, all with the same structure. I need a search engine where I am able to choose documents with the highest relevance according to the key words given by a searching user. I thought it could (?) be a good idea to have one using XQuery rather than having the information stored twice (in XML docs + mysql database) and querying the mysql database for relevance searches. Is XQuery any good for this, and how, and what speed can I expect on +1000 documents of about 7kb each. Thank you for your time. Kind regards

• Is there an existing algorithm for this notation translation/conversion?

  A system has a notation that would require writing an expression like (A+B)*C as #MUL(#ADD(A,B),C). Is there already an algorithm to do this kind of notation conversion so users can enter in a more conventional way? In other words an algorithm to convert from infix - my notation. First issue is I don't know an exact name for my notation... it's similar to reverse-polish but not quite. Every operator is encoded as a function taking arguments.

• OAuth 2.0: Can a user-agent client avoid forwarding fragments?

  In the OAuth 2.0 draft specification, user-agent clients receive authorization in the form of a bearer token via redirection (from an authentication server) to a URL such as HTTP/1.1 302 Found Location: http://example.com/rd#access_token=FJQbwq9&expires_in=3600 According to Section 3.5.2 it is then the user-agent's job to GET the URL in question, but "The user-agent SHALL NOT include the fragment component with the request." In other words, as a result of the example redirection above, the user-agent should GET /rd HTTP/1.1 Host: example.com without passing #access_token to the server. My question: what user agents behave this way? I thought redirection in Firefox, for example, would (logically) include the fragment in the GET request. Am I just wrong about this, or does the OAuth 2.0 specification rely on non-standard user-agent behavior?

  I have a string that looks like this: var str = "Hello world, &nbsp;hello &gt;world, hello world!"; ... and I'd like to replace all the hellos with e.g. bye and world with earth, except the words that start with &nbsp or &gt. Those should be ignored. So the result should be: bye earth, &nbsp;hello &gt;world, bye earth! Tried to this with str.replace(/(?!\&nbsp;)hello/gi,'bye')); But it doesn't work.

  I use Spring 3 to make a simple configuration. I have an XML file called PropertyBeans.xml like that : <bean id="propertyBean" class="com.myapp.PropertyBean"> <property name="rootDirLogPath" value="C:\Users\dede" /> </bean> I have the bean which match this XML and then I want to use this bean with the value injected. Actually I have : ApplicationContext context = new ClassPathXmlApplicationContext("AppPropertyBeans.xml"); PropertyBean obj = (PropertyBean) context.getBean("propertyBean"); String rootDirLogPath = obj.getRootDirLogPath(); This works great but I want to know if there's a way to avoid the instantiation of ApplicationContext at each time I want to use a bean. I've heard about BeanFactory is that a good idea? Which are the others solutions? In other words: Am I supposed to called this Application context instanciation in every Controller in spring MVC?

• Can GraphViz be used for a graph editing GUI?

  I am creating an application which will allow a developer to create a program flow-chart by selecting pre-defined functions from a ToolBox (which will show up as small graphical elements). In other words, developer will select one or more pre-defined functions (graphical elements) from ToolBox and drag-drop on the main work area. The application will then, based on the flow of functions selected, will auto-generate ready-to-compile-code. I looked a GraphViz, but am not sure whether it can be used to create a GUI IDE for editing graphical elements. I am looking for a functionality similart to Microsoft Visio, where users can add/remove/drag-drop/ various shapes to create a diagram. Does GraphViz fit in here? If yes, can you direct me to some examples showing how to do it? If GraphViz cannot be used, what are the other open source/free components available? I am intending to build the final application in .Net.

• How to specify physical path in ASPX page?

  I am developing a C# VS 2008 / SQL Server 2008 ASP.NET Web Applications project. In one of my ASPX files I am trying to reference the Master file, which is actually located in the parent website. In other words, when I open the parent website, I see this project listed. But when I open this project separately, I do not see parent website and this project is the root. So now how do I use the Master file from the parent website? Currently, I have in my ASPX file: <%@ Page Language="C#" MasterPageFile="~/Site.Master" AutoEventWireup="true" CodeFile="EnhancedCreateUserWizard.aspx.cs" Inherits="Membership_EnhancedCreateUserWizard" Title="Untitled Page" %> But this won't work because it is a virtual path and since this project is the root, I can't access the Master file virtually. Instead I want to specify physical path. How accomplish I do this?

• C++ include .h includes .cpp with same name as well?

  so I have text.cpp, which 'includes' header.h, and then I have a header.cpp which includes header.h. How is header.cpp compiled as well? I'm walking through a guide here, and thoroughly confused. Also, what is the correct terminology for what I am asking? I know I sound like a moron, and I apologize, but I'm ignorant. Oh, main is in test.cpp. Also, if header.cpp includes , why can't I use iostream function calls in text.cpp if it is included? If I include iostream in text.cpp will it be included in the program twice (in other words, bloat it)?

  I am working on a project to convert OCR'd PDf to png using ImageMagick and ghostscript and display in the browser so that i can select words in the image by letting a user query for the word . Imagemagick works fine along with ghostscript . I have a problem with the ps2text utility where it does not work reliably with pdf's . could anybody suggest a good utility to convert postscript to text in Linux so that i can store it in a db . thereafter i use a custom written search class to find out the co-ordinates of each word and highlight the text in the browser .   Is it possible to combine the following properties, and if so, how? Store in our version control system some Visual Studio 2008 native C++ project files for the developers in our team that use this IDE. Allow some of those developers to tweak their projects (e.g. using debug version of third-party libraries instead of the usual ones). Make sure these modifications are done in files that are not versioned. In other words, I would like to allow developers to tweak some settings in their projects without risking that these changes are committed. An 'optional VSPROP' file approach seems doomed to fail, as VS2008 refuses to load projects that refer to non-existent VSPROP files... Any other suggestion? Is this possible with VS2010?

In particular, I've created a class that contains a field of type weka.classifier.Classifier (Weka is a popular machine learning library - see http://weka.sourceforge.net/doc/weka/classifiers/Classifier.html). Classifier implements Serializeable so I hoped that I can get away with something like @Entity @Table(name = "classifiers") public class ClassifierData extends Model { @Id public Long id; public Classifier classifier; } However, the Evolutions script suggests the following database structure: create table classifiers ( id bigint auto_increment not null, constraint pk_classifiers primary key (id)) ) In other words, it ignores the field of type Classifier. (The database is MySQL if it makes any difference) What should I do to store complex serializeable objects using Ebean/Evolutions/PlayFramework?

  Hi guys, I'm working on rotating a loaded image. I set the graphics on a JPanel and then use standard AffineTransform in order to rotate it, say, 45 degrees. Unfortunately, the image is being cut, if it exceeds the panel area. How may I force JPanel to add scrolls to itself (while loading an image file, I would like to adjust the size of JPanel by adding the scrolls, without adjusting the size of JFrame). Or, in other words, how to correctly rotate the whole image? Thank you in advance for the reply!

  I need a way to take a resultset of KeyIDs and divide it up as equally as possible and update records differently for each division based on the KeyIDs. In other words, there is SELECT KeyID FROM TableA WHERE (some criteria exists) I want to update TableA 3 different ways by 3 equal portions of KeyIDs. UPDATE TableA SET FieldA = Value1 WHERE KeyID IN (the first 1/3 of the SELECT resultset above) UPDATE TableA SET FieldA = Value2 WHERE KeyID IN (the second 1/3 of the SELECT resultset above) UPDATE TableA SET FieldA = Value3 WHERE KeyID IN (the third 1/3 of the SELECT resultset above) or something to that effect.   Is there any way to capture the time interval between mouse wheel scroll start and stop? Actually I want to capture the interval between the scrolling start and stop when I very quickly scroll the mouse wheel. I have already looked at MouseWheel event but it don't fulfill my requirement. In senes that it always gives a value of Delta 120 or -120 but i want to call a function depending on the speed of the mouse scroll for example when i scroll the mouse normally i want to perform function 1 and when i scrolled the mouse very quickly i want to perform the function 2. In other words is there any way to distinguish between the mouse scroll high and normal speed. Any advice will be appreciated.

  Hi, I'm looking for a way to share some iPhone SDK source code I have with others. Goals: Share iPhone SDK source code, Objective C written in XCode. I have a good bit of source code I want to share. I'd like for it to be easy. I'd like for it to have syntax highlighting, by this I mean coloring and formatting Ideally it would allow me some room to make it "fit" into my site. I want it to look like basically another page on my site where the content is the code. It shouldn't be just a text file in other words.
