• Python - which multi platform GUI framework to use?

  Hi, I've written a Python GUI application and made it run on Linux, Windows and Mac. The framework I'm using is PyGtk. The final result is not really good: the application looks horrible on Mac, and it is not really 'native' neither on Windows. Furthermore on Mac the windows' behavior is sometimes wrong, with modal dialogs appearing below the main windows. I've explored other frameworks and I've found that a porting may be really hard: PyQt it is huge, difficult to install and to distribute under Mac; PyGui is poor: I need tables and tree views at least; wxPython state explicitly that you have to use a custom python build for Mac Tkinter: didn't check it, only have the impression that it is obsolete I know this question may appear similar to http://stackoverflow.com/questions/394039/which-python-gui-framework but in that thread the portability issue is not really taken in account. Windows and Mac are a must, since most of my user have that systems. Can you also suggest some books?

• What are some best practices for making sure your .NET code will scale well?

  Last week I interviewed for a position at a TripleA MMORPG game company here in NE. I didn't get the job but one of the areas that came up during the interview was the about the scalability of the code that you write and how it should be considered early on in the design of your architecture and classes. Sadly to say I've never thought very much about the scalability of the .NET code that I've written (I work with single user desktop and mobile applications and our major concerns are usually with device memory and rates of data transmission). I'm interested in learning more about writing code that scales up well so it can handle a wide range of remote users in a client server environment, specifically MMORPGs. Are there any books, web sites, best practices, etc. that could get me started researching this topic?

• PHP MVC correct usage

  What is the correct (recommended method) for passing information to a view in a MVC environment. Currently we use Zend Framework, where we write classes to handle specific things EG a Book class with a save and load method to retrieve info from the DB, which is called from a particular nameAction(). What I would like to know is what is the best way to pass this information to the view, in some cases we do $this-view-book_name = $book-getBookName(); and in other cases we do the following $this-view-book = $book; OR $this-view-books = Book_Manager::getAllBooks(); and then access the object(s) properties in the view. Information on-line suggests we try limit what access a view has to information, i.e pass them only what they need and in some cases people say its ok to pass stuff through as long as nothing is done to that information. • python - checking if a user has admin privileges

  Hi, I'm writing a little program as a self-learning project in Python 3.x. my idea is for the program to allow two fields of text entry to the user, and then plug the user's input into the value of two specific registry keys. What I was wondering, and something my books don't seem to cover, is if there is a simple way to make it check if the current user can access the registry. I'd rather it cleanly tell the user that he needs admin privileges than for the program to go nuts and crash because it's trying to access a restricted area. I'd like it to make this check as soon as the program launches, before the user is given any input options. What code is needed for this? thanks for the help

• Python 2.6 and 3.1.1, earlier version compatibility

  I ordered three books to start teaching myself Python - a beginning programming book, a computer science book that uses Python for all of its code references, and a book on Python network programming. Unfortunately, I was a little too quick on ordering them, because I hadn't noticed the version differences. The beginner book is for python 3.1, the CS book is Python 2.3, and the last is Python 2.6. The CS book is also oriented towards beginners. My question is, will the different versions be too different at this level for me to effectively use all three, or will I likely be able to get by learning from the 3.1 beginners book and then sort of teach myself from the 2.3 CS book, and be able to comprehend 2.6 code? That probably didn't make sense. I hope it did.

  hi, i just have a few weeks programming with vc# (2008) and i'm trying to build an application (winforms) and i have the following problem... i need my application to work with and without connection to the mssql database, this sounds like piece of cake for our friend DataSet right? i can persist the data as XML or binary until i can reach the database and the DataSet will magically sync; all without bothering the user. The problem is... the few books i have read just mention that logic like a fairy tale but dont give any practical example of how to do it, can you point me to one example/demo/whatever i can read or download of an application with (equal or) similar logic?

  What are some good information sources on designing programs with a client/server architecture? This is for development of a desktop application, not a Web service. The only books I have found on client/server apps deal with the case of a thin client connecting to a remote database. Two good examples of what I mean are Mathematica and SuperCollider. I'm looking for platform- and language-agnostic discussion of the issues in developing a frontend/backend system. Especially useful topics would be allocation of responsibilities and options for message passing.

• Morfik - suitability for medium-scale web enterprise applications

  I'm investigating technologies with which to develop a medium-scale (up to 100 or 200 simultaneous users) database-driven web application, and someone suggested Morfik. However, outside of the Morfik company I can find practically zero community support - no active blogs, no tutorials, no videos, no books - and this is of some concern (especially when compared to C# / ASP.NET / nHibernate etc support). Deciding between Morfik (untried and not used widely AFAIK) and the other technologies I mentioned (tried, tested, used widely) is becoming a critical issue for my company. Has anyone had success using Morfik in these kind of circumstances? What kind of performance did you achieve?

• Best practice for partial updates in a RESTful service

  I am writing a RESTful service for a customer management system and I am trying to find the best practice for updating records partially. For example, I want the caller to be able to read the full record with a GET request. But for updating it only certain operations on the record are allowed, like change the status from ENABLED to DISABLED. (I have more complex scenarios than this) I don't want the caller to submit the entire record with just the updated field for security reasons (it also feels like overkill). Is there a recommended way of constructing the URIs? Do I use GET, POST, PUT or is there no agreed way of doing these kind of things? When reading the REST books RPC style calls seem to be frowned upon. Thanks Frank

After making some research online for appropriate Java SE 6 books, I found that these are appropriate for me to get an excellent idea of Java SE 6: 1) Head First Java, 2nd Edition 2) An Intermediate Level Book <----------- 3) Effective Java (2nd Edition) 4) Java Concurrency in Practice 5) Java Generics and Collections 6) Java Concise Reference Series: Swing And AWT 7) Java Reflection in Action However, I am having trouble choosing an Intermediate Level Book which will provide me with breadth and depth in Java SE 6. I was thinking about the book "Thinking in Java (4th Edition)"....Unfortunately, its deals with Java SE 5 and not the latest version. • How does Model binding with a selectlist work?

  Hi, I'm having problems retrieving the values of a selectlist in my form collection. I've tried making a viewmodel with an attribute with the same name as the select list. I'm honestly just realizing I REALLY don't understand how model binding works with selectlists. I've just been assuming that the following conventions apply: Name the select list the same thing as the attribute on the model you want it to bind to. Apart from that, I really don't get it. I've looked at several books on it and they're useless frankly. How does a select list work with a) form collection and b) a particular model?

• Copy constructor with more than one parameter

  I am learning C++ and was reading copy constructor from the C++: The Complete Reference. The books says that It is permissible for a copy constructor to have additional parameters as long as they have default arguments defined for them. However, in all cases the first parameter must be a reference to the object doing the initializing. But I am confused that how we are going to pass those additional parameters? I am sure there should be some way which is not given in the book and which I am unable to figure out. Can anyone help me out? EDIT: Also is it possible to pass these extra parameters in all three cases i.e. ¦ When one object explicitly initializes another, such as in a declaration ¦ When a copy of an object is made to be passed to a function ¦ When a temporary object is generated (most commonly, as a return value)

So, felt I need to learn to code in OO PHP.... The problem is, having done code using functions for quite a long time, i just can't get my head to think in the OO way.... Also felt that probably I am not the only one facing this problem since the beginning of time... So, how did you people learn object oriented programming... especially how did you succeed in "unlearning" to code using functions... and learn to see you code as objects...?   i've read about design patterns and it seems that there are a lot of different design patterns to use. i wonder if there are some books that acts like a reference. "you want to build a framework, then consider this, this and this pattern". also giving some examples. then jumps to another implementation eg. search engine and gives some patterns and concrete examples to use. in this way you learn about the weakness and strength about each pattern and where they will fit, instead of just reading about every design pattern decoupled from each other. are there good "reference sheets" or other tutorials good for a beginner at this? thanks

Also, I come from a non CS background (no formal degree) Recently, while being interviewed for a job, I was asked about implementing a queue using a stack. I fumbled and wan't able to answer the question. After, the interview I could do it(had to spend some time). • vSphere - datastore falling off a host

  Recently we have been running the vCheck powershell script daily in order to help in monitoring our vSphere ESX 4.0 environment. One of the oddities that we have been seeing is that some of the datastores on the SAN don't always show up on every host. Our hosts are connected redundantly, via FC, to some brocade FC switches, which then connect via fiber to our EMC Ax4 SAN. While all the datastores are presented to each host we have, and they see them initially, they sometimes seem to fall off and are no longer visible. It easy enough to rescan for datastores and add them back to the hosts the hosts but this seems to be an error. Has anyone else seen this or know why it may be happening? Responses to questions: 1. Is it always the same ESX servers that lose their connection? – Scott Warren No this happens randomly on random hosts. If a VM is running on a particular host, of which the VM's disks are on a SAN datastore, then that datastore won't disappear. It seems to happen if a host doesn't touch a datastore for a bit and it just forgets about it.

When our application bills a customer, it would be nice to have that information recorded automatically in QB rather than logging in to QB Online to fill in the info. Is there a way to accomplish this using Quickbook's APIs? The Intuit developer information is very confusing; it is mainly oriented towards extending the desktop version of Quickbooks or developing apps to publish in Intuit's app store. Have you successfully created a web or other service-side app that was able to pull data to or from QB Online?

  I really have the felling as if I'm stuck in my own craft. I've been developing and learning for a while now and keep having the feeling that I should advance more, or even be more knowledgeable. I've started projects I didn't finish because I thought I lacked the knowledge and the skill to make that feature work just right, or to make that code magically appear on my screen. I've read books I didn't finish, thinking I wasn't advanced enough for the subjects they covered. I've been around long enough to know that everything comes with experience, hard work and dedication. But when i try it on windows 2007 .it works fine and show me a public address. - How to get public ipv6 address from xp machine ? - on my xp machine ipv6 is enabled but when i use command tracert6 www.kame.net it shows No route to destination. Why Any type of help willl appreciated..
