  I was wondering if programming languages and frameworks get updated in small increments or are they just x.0 releases? And if they do how do you keep up on all the changes in every update? I am specifically interested in Objective-C and Cocoa and CocoaTouch. I'm learning from books and online PDF's etc, but often they are at best a few years old. I just would like to know if there have been any changes etc. that should concern me and even if not, inevitably there will be, so where can I look out for them?

  Hi Guys, I recently wrote C programs for image processing of BMP images, I had to read the pixel values and process them, it was very simple I followed the BMP header contents and I could get most of the information of the BMP image. Now the challenge is to process videos (Frame by Frame), how can I do it? How will I be able to read the headers of continuous streams of image frames in a video clip? Or else, is it like, for example, the mpeg format will also have universal header, upon reading which I can get the information about the entire video and after the header, all the data are only pixels. I hope I could convey. Has anyone got experience with processing videos? Any books or links to tutorials will be very helpful. Vikram

  I am sure that someone familiar with HQL (I am myself a newbie) can easily answer this question. In my Grails application, I have the following domain class. class Book { org.joda.time.DateTime releaseDate //I use the PersistentDateTime for persisting via Hibernate (that use a DATETIME type for MySQL DB) } In my HQL query, I want to retrieve books whose release date is included in range date1..date2 For instance I tried: DateTime date1, date2 ... def queryStr = "select * from Book as b where b.releaseDate > $date1 and b.releaseDate < $date2" def res = Book.executeQuery(queryStr) But I got the exception ...caused by: org.springframework.orm.hibernate3.HibernateQueryException: unexpected token: The error token points to date format (for instance 2009-11-27T21:57:18.010+01:00 or Fri Nov 27 22:01:20 CET 2009) I have also tried to convert date1 into a Date class without success So what is the correct HQL code ? Should I convert to a specific format (which one?) using the patternForStyle method or is there another -cleaner- way to do it? Thanks, Fabien.

• Developing ebooks- software?

  I've written a few documents for friends or blogs on software testing, job hunting and android development. I've been toying with the idea of producing some programming-related ebooks. However, developing these in Word or OpenOffice seems too amateurish compared to some of the fantastically produced books out there. I'm proficient in LaTeX but have never seen it used to produce ... 'marketable' works - just technical papers, maths, etc - which is great for code but not for distribution. Has anyone seen any good (preferably free / open source) tool or software for developing/compiling professional-looking marketable ebooks (probably to .pdf or .exe format - but I can take care of that part if need be)? And more importantly, ones that are easy to use to format any code samples or snippets that I may choose to include. Much appreciated.

• URL Encoding - Illegal Character Replacement

  Hi, I am doing some url redirections in a project that I am currently working on. I am new to web development and was wondering what the best practise was to remove any illegal path characters, such as ' ? etc. I'm hoping I don't have to resort to manually replacing each character with their encoded urls. I have tried UrlEncode and HTMLEncode, but UrlEncode doesn't cater for the ? and HTMLEncode doesn't cater for ' E.G. If I was to use the following: Dim name As String = "Dave's gone, why?" Dim url As String = String.Format("~/books/{0}/{1}/default.aspx", bookID, name) Response.Redirect(url) I've tried wrapping url like this: Dim encodedUrl As String = Server.UrlEncode(url) And Dim encodedUrl As String = Server.HTMLEncode(url) Thanks in advance.   Hello, I have a unique issue that I need advice on. I've been writing asp.net apps with SQL Server back ends for the past 10 years. During that time, I have also written some PHP apps, but not many. I'm going to be porting some of my asp.net apps to PHP and have run into a bit of an issue. In the Asp.net world, it's generally understood that when accessing any databases, using views or stored procedures is the preferred way of doing so. I've been reading some PHP/MySQL books and I'm beginning to get the impression that utilizing stored procedures in mysql is not advisable. I hesitate in using that word, advisable, but that's just the felling I get. So, the advice I'm looking for is basically, am I right or wrong? Do PHP developers use stored procedures at all? Or, is it something that is shunned? Thanks in advance.

  Possible Duplicate: How do you like your comments? G'day, I've read both of Steve McConnell's excellent Code Complete books "Code Complete" and "Code Complete 2" and was wondering if people have any other suggestions for commenting code. My commenting mantra could be summed up by the basic idea of expressing "what the code below cannot say". While enjoying this interesting blog post by Jeff about commenting I was still left wondering "When coding, when do you feel a comment is required?" Edit: Oops. Seems to be a duplicate of this question http://stackoverflow.com/questions/121945/how-do-you-like-your-comments so sorry for the noise. Thanks to my, seemingly, SO shadow for pointing it out - wouldn't have thought I was that interesting. Now off to read the original post and see if it is relevant. Edit: I meant to emphasise the best appraoch to ensure that your comments will stay in step with the code. Maybe expressing an intent rather than the mechansim for instance.

  How should I store an Java Enum in JavaDB? Should I try to map the enums to SMALLINT and keep the values in source code only? The embedded database is only used by a single application. Or should I just store the values as DECIMAL? None of these solutions feels good/robust for me. Is there any better alternatives? • Software Requirement Specifications for Web Applications

  Hi guys, I'm looking for some guidance/books to read when it comes to creating a software requirement specification for a web application. For inspiration I have read some spec documents for desktop based applications. The documents I have read capture a systems functional requirements in use cases which tend to be rather data oriented with use cases centered around the various CRUD operations the application is intended to perform. I like this structure however I'm finding it rather difficult to marry it to what my web application needs to do, mostly reading data as opposed to manipulating it. I've had a go at writing some use cases however they all tend to boil down to "Search for item", "Change view of search results" or "User selects facet to refine search results". This doesn't sound quite right to me and makes me wonder if I'm going about this the right way. Are there planning differences between web based and desktop based applications?

Others use the same variable names in the calling function and in the declaration/prototype but a different one in the definition as in: void blabla(int something); //prototype blabla(something) // calling function inside main after something has been initialized to int void blabla(int something_else) //definition I have two questions: What convention is best to use in C?; Does the convention apply regardless whether a value is being passed "by-value" or if it's being passed by a pointer? • Can I add an additional eula/tos inside my app on top of the iphone app store agreement

  I have an app that allows users to generate and publish content. I would like to possibly be able to use the content they publish/create to make derivative works, ie books etc (similar to what icanhazcheeseburger has done.) If I were to put an opt in alert to ask the user whether or not they would like to be a part of this, would this violate the iphone sdk? I know this is not programming question so I'm not sure if this is a fair question, but I thought I heard something like you can't add a eula you have to abide by whatever apple dictates in their app store agreement. Also if you have suggestions on different ways to approach getting users to agree to this I'm all ears, but yes that is kind of subjective. Thanks folks, Nick

I inherited the graph structure from the previous programmer and had to leave it alone while I worked on other parts of the site. It's time to make the graphs more meaningful, so I'm looking for books/websites/etc about graphs. (Not graph theory!) Charts that convey comparisons at a glance. • Advantages of three-way automatic merging vs. two-way

  I'm interested in understanding two-way and three-way merging of source code files. Based on what I've read, two-way merging has some "crippling weaknesses" compared to three-way merging. What I'd really like to see are one or two simple, concrete examples of cases where three-way merging is able to automatically merge something from a branch to the trunk without producing conflicts, while two-way merging falls down and requires a bunch of manual intervention to get the code merged.   The keyword protected grants access to classes in the same package and subclasses (http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/java/javaOO/accesscontrol.html). Now, every class has java.lang.Object as superclass (http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs/api/java/lang/Object.html). Hence I conclude that every class may access java.lang.Object's methods even if they are protected. Take a look at the following example: public class Testclass { public Object getOne() throws CloneNotSupportedException { return this.clone(); } public Object getTwo() throws CloneNotSupportedException { return ((Object) this).clone(); } } While getOne() compiles fine, getTwo() gives Testclass.java:6: clone() has protected access in java.lang.Object return ((Object) this).clone(); I neither understand why getTwo() doesn't compile nor what's the difference (regarding the access of java.lang.Objects members) with getOne().

  I didn't feel this rule before, but it seems that a binary tree or any tree (each node can have many children but children cannot point back to any parent), then this data structure can be represented as 1 table in a database, with each row having an ID for itself and a parentID that points back to the parent node. That is in fact the classical Employee - Manager diagram: one boss can have many people under him... and each person can have n people under him, etc. This is a tree structure and is represented in database books as a common example as a single table Employee.

Does Java know to create an Integer from the primitive int and then cast to the superclass? How exactly does Java handle this behind the scenes? Thanks!

• Setting a property value on each of the results in a FetchedResults set

  Hi On my Core Data Entity "Book" i have a boolean property, 'wasViewed' (NSNumber numberWithBool) that tells me if the Book was "viewed". I would like to implement a sort of "reset" this property for all my NSManagedObjects "Book". So that I can set them all to NO between sessions. I use an NSPredicate to retrieve all the Books like this: NSPredicate *predicate = [NSPredicate predicateWithFormat:@"wasViewed == %@", [NSNumber numberWithBool:YES]]; // code for setting entity, request etc... NSMutableArray *mutableFetchResults = [[[managedObjectContext executeFetchRequest:request error:&error] mutableCopy] autorelease]; This is working just fine, however, now I need to set up a loop, go through each Book object, something like this: for(Book *b in mutableFetchResults) { [b setWasViewed:NO] } Is there a way to perform an action on each element that fits the predicate instead of retrieving it? So instead of executeFetchRequest on a managedObjectContext it could be executeOperationOnFetchRequestResults or something along those lines. Thanks for any input given:)

• why do we all learn and study java or .net or why java or .net are popular?

  My question to be clear is why do we all need to learn java or .net(C#) , still java or .net are more popular than delphi or c++ and even there are lot of resource,articles or books compared to c++ or delphi about java and .net. However, I heard majority, if I am right about 80% of software are developed using c++ or delphi in the software industry. so, why do we bother about other languages specifically about the cosmopolitan languages such as java or .net in education as well as for job interview. Although, still I know the elegance of java and .net, their safe code execution,fully objected oriented behavior ...etc, but still according to the statics they are not preferred on software develpement as a primary language mainly because of their execution time compared to c++ or delphi. So my question are why do they choose them for jobs or educational purpose and everything else? why do we lose our time learning these language if we are forced to use the other languages in the industry?

• Is there a SQL Server error numbers C# wrapper anyone knows of?

  I really want to do something useful when a PK violation occurs but I hate trapping error numbers... they just don't read right without comments (they're certainly not self documenting). I know I can find all the potential error numbers at SQL Server books online but I really want to be able to pass the error number to some helper class or look it up against a Dictionary of some sort rather than have non-descript err numbers everywhere. Has anyone got / seen any code anywhere that encapsulates the SQL Server Error numbers in this way as I don't want to re-invent the wheel (or I'm lazy maybe).

  I'm going through "Intermediate Perl" and it's pretty cool. I just finished the section on "The Schwartzian Transform" and after it sunk in I started to wonder why the transform doesn't use a cache. In lists that have several repeated values the transform recomputes the value for each one so I thought why not use a hash to cache results. Here' some code: # a place to keep our results my %cache; # the transformation we are interested in sub foo { # expensive operations } # some data my @unsorted_list = ....; # sorting with the help of the cache my @sorted_list = sort { ($cache{$a} or $cache{$a} = &foo($a)) <=> ($cache{$b} or $cache{$b} = &foo($b)) } @unsorted_list; Am I missing something? Why isn't the cached version of the Schwartzian transform listed in books and in general just better circulated because on first glance I think the cached version should be more efficient?
