  This sounds like a really good idea: Ageing Icons with Freshness App Unfortunately the "demo" is Mac only. How would you go about replicating this on Windows? One approach I can think off is to modify the desktop.ini file within each folder. This would require a service that periodically scans some folders and updates the desktop.ini file. Is this the best way?

  Hi-- I have a pretty standard VPS running Ubuntu 8.1, Apache 2.2, PHP 5 etc. -- standard Lamp stack. I am using suhosin and have tried my best to plug the obvious stuff, since I'm the only user-- there's no SSH access except via pubkey on a non-standard port, there's no root access by SSH, no FTP server running, iptables is set to discard anything outside of basically port 80 or my SSH port (there's no mail server or anything else). However, I've still been compromised (not badly as far as I can tell) probably by a SQL injection. I've locked down the SQL user (there's only one outside of root, and he's got limited priv, no file etc.) So I ran nikto to see what I'm doing wrong, and there's a list of things I've never seen, and can't find using "find" or any other method I'm aware of. • ls hangs for a certain directory

  There is a particular directory (/var/www), that when I run ls (with or without some options), the command hangs and never completes. There is only about 10-15 files and directories in /var/www. • Vista 64-bit, DISK BOOT FAILURE

  So I have this Acer Aspire AX3200-U3600A with Windows Vista (64-bit). Every night I turn it off and turn it back on in the morning. Around three weeks ago, I did a fresh factory reimage. Good as new. Then around two days ago, when I turned it on, I noticed it was running extremly slow. As in, it would often freeze up while I had multiple applications open when it usually never froze up. So I decided to restart my computer. Big mistake. My computer froze right after I clicked shut-down. I waited a while. Nothing. Waited some minutes. Nope. I decided to shut it down by pressing the power button. Here is where the problems begin. When I turned it back on, I saw the Windows logo and loading bar and then it loaded to black. I turned it off again forcefully by power button and then once more... then I got: AMD Data Change... Update New Data to DMI! then later the screen clears and I get: AHCI Option ROM BIOS Revision: 01.05.92 Date: 02-19-2008 Copyright (c) 2006-2008 Phoenix Technologies, LTD Port 01: Reset Port Error!! Port 02: then the screen clears again but this time, this loads from the bottom: Nvidia Boot Agent 249.0542 (copyright stuff... blah blah) PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable. PXE-M0F: Exiting Nvidia Boot Agent DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER. So I try to go into Safe Mode. Well, first of all it doesn't load as fast. After it loads disk.sys from windows/drivers, it will wait a while (2-3 mins) THEN load. However it loads the Acer eRecovery Management Tool. I have three options: Reset computer to factory default, Restore computer from user's backup, or Exit. However, the top two options are gray and disabled where as the Exit is in blue and definitely clickable. So obviously safe mode is not there... A strong thing to note: In the beginning when all of this started, I did a Boot Windows Normal from pressing f8 and I got to my desktop! It logged me in. I could see the icons on my files. However my desktop was extremely slow as in when I clicked on the Start menu, it would wait a while, then load up the menu with JUST the gradient, no text or icons... so as you can see... it saw my HDD? Also, before anyone says, I have NO USB plugged in. My mouse and keyboard are not USB inputs, I assure you. And this came without a recovery CD AND when I went in BIOS, to change the BOOT ORDER, I did NOT see a CD-ROM option. And when I tried pressing ALT+F10 to get into Acer eRecovery Management, the top two options were disabled as well. But sometimes on start-up, I get: Windows has encountered a problem communicating with a device connected to your computer. This error can be caused by unplugging a removable storage device such as an external USB drive while the device is in use, or by faulty hardware such as a hard drive or CD-ROM drive that is failing. Make sure any removeable storage is properly connected and then restart your computer. If you continue to receive this error message, contact the hardware manufacturer. Status: 0xc00000e9 Info: An unexpected I/O error has occured. Then I tried Last Known Good Configuration Settings, that gives me a BSOD. What should I do/

• Problems after upgrading my ubuntu to Ubuntu 14.04 lts

  I have problems after upgrading my older Ubuntu version to Ubuntu 14.04 lts. I was offered this installation and after the procss and restarting of the computer there is just a black page with following message: mount: mounting /dev/loop0 on /root failed: Invalid argument mount: mounting /dev on /root/dev failed: No such file or directory mount: mounting /sys on /root/sys failed: No such file or directory mount: mounting /proc on /root/proc failed: No such file or directory Target filesystem doesn't have requested /sbin/init. • I have finally traded my Blackberry in for a Droid!

  Over the years I have used a number of different types of phones. Windows Mobile, Blackberry, Nokia, and now Android. Until the Blackberry, which was my last phone (and I still have one issued from my office) I had never found a phone that “just worked” especially with email and messaging. The Blackberry did, and does, excel at those functions. My last personal phone was a Storm 1 which was Blackberry’s first touch screen phone. The Storm 2 was an improved version that fixed some screen press detection issues from the first model and it added Wifi. Over the last few years I have watched others acquire and fall in love with their ‘Droid’s including a number of iPhone users which surprised me. Our office has until recently only supported Blackberry phones, adding iPhones within the last year or so. When I spoke with our internal telecom folks they confirmed they were evaluating Android phones, but felt they still were not secure enough out of the box for corporate use and SOX compliance. That being said, as a personal phone, the Droid Rocks! I am impressed with its speed, the number of apps available, and the overall design. It is not as “flashy” as an iPhone but it does everything that I care about and more. The model I bought is the Motorola Droid 2 Global from Verizon. It is currently running Android 2.2 for it’s OS, 2.3 is just around the corner. It has 8 gigs of internal flash memory and can handle up to a 32 gig SDCard. (I currently have 2 8 gig cards, one for backups, and have ordered a 16 gig card!) Being a geek at heart, I “rooted” the phone which means gained superuser access to the OS on the phone. And opens a number of doors for further modifications down the road. Also being a geek meant I have already setup a development environment and built and deployed the obligatory “Hello Droid” application. Clicker.tv Clicker.tv is an HTML5 web application that indexes both free and premium content from sources like Hulu, Netflix, Amazon, iTunes, and more. Some movies or episodes, such as those from Netflix and Amazon.com’s Video on Demand, will require viewers to have a membership, or pay a fee to access content. There is also a Clicker.tv app for Boxee.   Navigation Navigating in Clicker.tv is rather easy with your keyboard. Directional Keys: navigate up, down, left, and right. Enter: make a selection Backspace: return to previous screen Escape: return to the Clicker.tv home screen. Note: You can also navigate through Clicker.tv with your PC remote. Recommended Browsers Firefox 3.6 + Safari 4.0 + Internet Explorer 8 + Google Chrome Note: You’ll need the latest version of Flash installed to play the majority of content. Earlier versions of the above browsers may work, but for full keyboard functionality, stick with the recommendations. Using Clicker.tv The first time you go to Clicker.tv, (link below) you’ll be met with a welcome screen and some helpful hints. You’ll need to go to Clicker.com and create an account. You’ll find the link at the upper right of the page. Enter a username, password and email address. There also an option to link with Facebook, or you can simply Skip this step.   Go to Clicker.tv and sign in. You can manually type in your credentials or use the onscreen keyboard with your remote.   Settings If you’d prefer not to display content from premium sites or Netflix, you can remove them through the Settings. Toggle Amazon, iTunes and Netflix on or off.   Watching Episodes To watch an episode, select the image to begin playing from the default source, or select one of the other options. You can see in the example below that you can choose to watch the episode from Fox, Hulu, or Amazon Video on Demand.   Your episode will then launch and begin playing from your chosen source. If you choose a premium content source such as iTunes or Amazon’s VOD, you’ll be taken to the Amazon’s website or iTunes and prompted to purchase the content.   Playlists Once you’ve created an account and signed in, you can begin adding Shows to your playlist. Choose a series and select Add to Playlist.   You’ll see in the example below that Family Guy has been Added and the number 142 is shown next to the playlist icon to indicate that 142 episodes has been added to your playlist. Underneath the listings for each episode in your playlist you can mark as Watched, or Remove individual episodes.   You can also view the playlist or make any changes from the Clicker.com website. Click on “Playlist” on the top right of the Clicker.com site to access your playlists. You can select individual episodes from your playlists, remove them, or mark them as watched or unwatched. Clicker.TV and Boxee Boxee offers a Clicker.TV app that features a limited amount of the Clicker.TV content. You’ll find Clicker.TV located in the Boxee Apps Library. Select the Clicker App and then choose Start. From the Clicker App interface you can search or browse for available content. Select an episode you’d like to view… Then select play in the pop up window. You can also add it to your Boxee queue, share it, or add a shortcut, just as you can from other Boxee apps. When you click play your episode will launch and begin playing in Boxee. Conclusion Clicker.TV is currently still in Beta and has some limitations. Typical remotes won’t work completely in all external websites. So, you’ll still need a keyboard to be able to perform some operations such as switching to full screen mode. The Boxee app offers a more fully remote friendly environment, but unfortunately lacks a good portion of the Clicker.tv content.   Just a quick note… If you’re managing WordPress installations, and haven’t heard about the recent WordPress hacks (http://wordpress.org/support/topic/307660) yet you probably just got back from holiday. There’s plenty of advice on fixing a hacked installation if you follow some of the links in the above post, so I’m not going to recite that here. However! While cleaning a WordPress installation that resides in a subdirectory of a modx cms I found that the modx index.php files were also infected. I searched for infected files using grep as follows: grep -R 'function gpc_' * If you’re on a shared hosting environment that doesn’t allow shell access: time to change your hosting provider.   Afternoon, I can successful in my Geneious Pro software but when I am required to have FLEXnet installed for the licensing process. The prompt I am given is : To install FLEXnet on Linux, run the following command from your shell as root: /home/shep/Geneious/licensing_service/install_fnp.sh "/home/shep/Geneious/licensing_service/linux64/FNPLicensingService" When you have done this, you can activate your license in Geneious. • xgamma -display parameter for dual monitor setup

  I want to change gamma for my first monitor. Every time I invoke xgamma with different -display parameters it somehow points to my second monitor. But I want to modify first one. I tried these commands. The parameters I have used for -display are :0, :0.0, :0.1, :1.0, :1.1, :1. Only the first 2 works. But it points to my second monitor. Not the first one. • Byobu Split Screens attaching to same session

  On a brand new install of Precise, after installing byobu, I'm facing the following behaviour: ie. all internal splits on byobu (using Ctrl+F2) will just attach to the same screen session. What I type on the left is reflected on the right. The solutions on this question while on the same problem do not help me out. I've tried the following: byobu-disable both inside and outside the byobu session byobu new-session byobu shell just runs a new simple screen session as far as I can figure it out. This does not include terminal splits, so it does not help me. byobu -S screen-name lets me create two separate byobu sessions, but split screens lead to duplicates in both.

  Hi, I am currently working on a HP-UX platform and my role as a prod support team member involves mostly to write shell scripts. But i want to branch out into core systems programming in unix. A quick search on the internet threw no "unix systems programming jobs" in india. I'm confused as what to do. I really would like to continue with unix as my core competency, but unix jobs in india are mostly of sys admin/ prod support type, of which i do not want a part of. • Dash is slow and shows irrelevant results

  I currently have the latest Ubuntu 12.10 installed on my laptop. Usually I use Launchy application to have a quick access to any app/config/file etc. Now I'm trying to get used to Dash, which is supposed to be default way to do such things in recent Ubuntu versions. The difference between the usage of Launchy and Dash is following: Launchy: Alt+Space - Launchy shell shown instantly - type your request - open the target Dash: SuperKey - PERIOD - Dash is shown - type your request - PERIOD - navigate with arrow buttons between the results - open the desired result Another problem. When I type the term "ryth" (which is incorrectly spelled part of "Rhythmbox") what is shown in these 2 shells: Launchy: 1 result, which is Rhythmbox. The letters 'r', 'y', 't' and 'h' are highlighted. Dash: 2 results, which are MP3s from Amazon and are completely irrelevant to my request So is there any way to tweak the Dash to allow me to use it as I use Launchy with the same performance and results?

• Will there be a difference between Unity "Desktop" and Unity "Netbook" interface?

  What has me slightly confused from all the different reports about Unity becoming the default shell in the 11.04 desktop edition: Some claim and this is how most people seem to see it, that what currently is the UNE interface will be taken 1:1 (including any changes made during the Natty cycle) and used as the interface for the desktop version - meaning that the interface will be exactly the same for 11.04 UNE and UDE. Some other reports talk more along the lines a "desktop unity", making it sound, that while both will be using Unity, the Desktop edition will get it's own Unity, tailored specifically towards the Desktop formfactor. So both editions will be using Unity, but with slight differences in the layout or interface. So my question is, will there be any difference between 11.04 Unity "Desktop" and Unity "Netbook" interface?
