• SMTP Server Times Out for 1 of 2 ISPs

  For months I've been using a 5g sprint card for my laptop to check email. I have gmail, and three other accounts all configured in Thunderbird. Recently, I got AT&T internet service at my house and I discovered that I cannot send email when connected to my home service. I can receive just fine, but I can't send. If I plugin my 5g card, I can sent/receive with no problems. At home I'm connected wirelessly through a router. What could be causing this interruption? I even tried pinging my smtp server only to see it timeout when connected via AT&T. If more details are needed, I'll be happy to share.

• How do I get Windows 7 To Recognize a newly installed RAID 5 volume?

  I had a previously running Windows 7 (64 bit) system. I added 3 new 1TB Seagate drives that I set up as a RAID 5 volume. I have a Gigabyte GA-P55M-UD2 motherboard. I installed the drives, set up the BIOS and configured the three drives as a RAID volume through the RAID setup utility that was accessed via Ctrl-I while the system was booting. I rebooted the system and could see the drives during the boot sequence. However, when Windows 7 was starting I got an error (quick blue screen) and then Windows tried to repair itself with no success. Do I need to install RAID drivers in Windows? How do I do it if Windows won't boot? Thanks in advance.

• UDP flooding multiple servers

  What do you suggest? Being UDP flooded as I write to multiple servers in different data centers in 5 different countries . Up to 250,000 packets a second. I believe Cisco routers 5505 would not handle that - (some of our datacenter hosters can offer them. Some have no firewalls to offer.) Our clients naturally have constant disconnects to the server they are on. Hacker started this about three weeks ago. Sometimes for a few hours - up to a few days. If we can't stop it hitting the server with firewalls then how do we stop the hacker - now there is the challenge! Update : Found some of the data centers offer up to 10 firewall rules but would their routers be able to handle the possible volume I am talking about? Thanks Chris

• Mercurial hgwebdir configuration URL

  I'm setting up an hgwebdir configuration for the first time with Mercurial on apache2. I can see the three repositories I've set up in the first page, and I've figured out how to modify their names so they don't resemble the directory path. But when I click to go to one of the repositories, the URL becomes http://localhost/hg/hgweb.cgi/path/to/repos. I would like the directory to be http://localhost/hg/name instead as that is easier to remember for people who want to clone the repository. Is there anyway to do that with hgwebdir?

• transient DNS issues with certain sites in Snow Leopard

  I'm having a rather bizarre DNS issue with Snow Leopard. Certain sites - MSNBC.com being the most noticeable for me - have an odd issue with DNS, in all browsers. After not visiting the site after a while (30 minutes or so), the first attempt to access MSNBC.com results in a DNS error. Refreshing 1-5 times resolves the issue until the next ~30 minute period of inactivity. Seen this on three separate Macs at this point. One from-the-factory Snow Leopard install, two upgrades. Most sites are just fine. I Google and found other reports of the same thing with MSNBC, but no solutions.

  I have three google users [personal, work, work] in my chrome on Mac OS X. The chrome for my personal account [not the other two chromes] has text-enhanced ads in every site i go to. It double-underlines some keywords on every page. On mouse hover I get an ad overlay from http[colon][slash][slash]intext.nav-links.com[slash] Upon right-clicking one of the text-enhanced keywords and going to 'inspect element', i see that the text has been wrapped around with a CSS classname called adtext. It even shows the .adtext CSS descriptions on the right. How do i determine from WHICH particular extension is this CSS classname being injected into my pages?

• VMware Server Guest OS Random Shutdown

  Anyone encounter a problem in which the Guest OS in VMware Server randomly shuts down? This has happened about once a month, where VMware Server just shuts down ALL guests OS. The host machine is fine, and you can log into the web management of VMware Server, it's just all guest OS get shutdown with no apparent reason. Even the logs say vmware guest os so and so was shut down, but no details why. This is not just one one machine, we have VMware server installed on three different PowerEdge servers and they all have encounter the same problem. We've tripped checked all settings and nothing is out of the ordinary.

• Two questions about restoring Thunderbird from a backup

  Setting up a new Windows 7 PC, I'm puzzled by two things in Thunderbird 3.1.9: I restored a profile from a three-month old backup, no problem. I then copied more recent files into the Mail/ directory, but TBird still shows the old messages. The last message in Inbox is dated 3/16/2011 -- how do I get TBird to display all the messages in the Local Folders/Inbox view? A large number of the existing messages are now displayed in separate tabs -- I can't tell you how many, but there could be over 1000. Which file governs this? Or can I hire someone from Mechanical Turk to come over and manually close each tab?

  In the last three month I was experiencing that my internet connection started to get very slow and websites had long time to load. The first thing I made was an ping to www.google.com which showed that I was loosing pakets. It was after the reset when things worked again for some days. But later the same network timeouts started to happen again. • Bad to be logged in as admin all the time?

  At the office where I work, three of the other members of the IT staff are logged into their computers all the time with accounts that are members of the domain administrators group. I have serious concerns about being logged in with admin rights (either local or for the domain). As such, for everyday computer use, I use an account that just has regular user privelages. I also have an different account that is part of the domain admins group. I use this account when I need to do something that requires elevated privilages on my computer, one of the servers, or on another user's computer. What is the best practice here? Should network admins be logged in with rights to the entire network all the time (or even their local computer for that matter)?

  I'm having a serious problem with my computer; I think I've narrowed it down to the motherboard, but I'd like a second opinion before I spend the money. Before I moved into my new apartment, my desktop was working fine; now, it just won't work. It will turn on, the fans will spin up, lights come on... but nothing appears on the screen. No POST, nothing. I've tried: A different monitor (both are VGA) A different video-card (both are DVI, PCIe) Three different, known-good VGA-DVI adapters The onboard video port (VGA) Reseating the memory, and trying only one stick Different, known-good wall-outlets Unplugging the HDD and CD-drive from both the motherboard and PSU Replacing the PSU Has anyone had this happen before? • Why suddenly DOS-type hexadecimal file names?

  One of the fairly recent folders on my XP SATA data drive suddenly shows DOS-type hexadecimal file names (i.e., eight characters with three-character extensions) I deleted them and now my Recycle bin shows them with a tilde (i.e., 194ABE~1.JPG). The images are all valid but the file names I assigned are gone. (The 2-terabyte SATA data drive has no OS, if that matters.) The last time this happened on an IDE drive, I was able to back up all the remaining files just before the drive died. Am I facing the same scenario now with my 2-terabyte SATA data drive? It is only a couple of years old. Should I quickly buy another one and back up 20 years of files to it before my current drive dies?

  Hi, We're planning to consolidate our infrastructure (a dozen servers). We'll buy two or three identical new servers who will be setup as a XenServer pool. Load balancing and HA tools will monitor the pool and vMotion VMs in case of failure/overload. I know that the DL100 series of HP servers is cheaper than the DL300 serie (in every sense of the word). As we don't need local storage (we have a SAN) and can live with a temporary down server (provided that Xen Server HA tools work as advertized), what are the downsides going with the DL100 serie ?   The other day I picked up the new version of InternetCorkboard.com virus, the one that doesn't come with any program I've installed (as far as I can tell) and that doesn't show among Firefox add-ons. I've tried as much as I could google and even installed brand new version of Microsoft Security Essentials. I did the full scan with MSE and it didn't find anything.   Related to an another question I asked. This question seems similar but I'm wondering if there are any updates. To support a single site that has users all over the world, I will create EC2 web servers in the US, Asia and Europe regions. The web server instances in the US and Asia regions will be backed by RDS replicas. Is it possible to load balance across these three regions? So when a customer from Spain goes to example.com, she should be routed to the EC2 instances in Europe region, a customer in Miami should be sent to the instance in Eastern US region, etc. Is this possible to do this with just AWS features? Are there docs on how to set this up?

  It's long, but please read carefully. I am trying to install an SSL certificate on my dedicated server with WHM/cPanel. I have a dedicated IP to use with the SSL certificate. My main domain is example.com (NOT www.example.com), and I have an account and website already running on it. I bought the certificate for the main domain (example.com without www.). I installed the certificate (successfully). I used the example.com domain, the dedicated IP and the same cPanel user which owns example.com (non-ssl) I double checked ConfigServer for port 443 being open. RESULT: https://example.com won't open, ssl check tool returns a "SSL is not configured on this port (443)" error. I have three questions: where did I go wrong, wht did I miss? is it possible to have one domain on two ips (one for http, one for https)? is it possible to have an ssl host with the same user as the regular one?

• Rails3 environment running very slow on Windows XP, Ubuntu 9.04, Ubuntu 9.10

  I've tried all three (granted the Ubuntu versions were via VirtualBox with XP as a host, but I gave the images all the available RAM my system has). Loading the rails environment is taking 30-60 seconds. rails console, rake test:units - anything that requires rails to load up. And not just on the first go - every time. I've even used autotest to see if it helps with execution time for unit tests, but it doesn't. Any time I change one test, it still takes 30 seconds to load them, and then about 4 seconds to execute. Has anyone else come across this issue? Has anyone figured out any way to fix this?

• Windows 2003 Cluster: Failover Delay

  I am testing the failover policies of our test failover cluster system. When I shutdown the node who is currently controlling the cluster (NODE1), it takes about 2 mins and 40 seconds before the next node on the preferred list (NODE2) takes control of the cluster. I tried changing the looksAlive and isAlive interval to 5000ms to all resources, but that didn't help. Looking at the Event Viewer of the remaining nodes, it shows that it was almost instantly detected that NODE1 was down. But it took another ~2:40 minutes for it to be removed from the live cluster list and for NODE2 to take over. Is there anyway of changing or shortening this "failover delay"? • Windows 7 won't load unless other harddrives "disconnect"ed in UEFI shell

  I have three disks, one GPT partitioned containing Windows 7 and Debian, the other MBR partitioned containing CentOS, and the other one MBR partitioned, empty. It used to work (loading Windows boot manager using rEFIt) but now after installing CentOS and OpenIndiana on the second drive, Windows won't boot. The logo is displayed briefly and then a text mode scrollbar "Loading files", then back to the rEFIt menu. The only thing that makes it work is if I drop into the UEFI shell and run disconnect XX where XX is the device handle of the other hard drives (obtained from running devices). This makes me think that the bootloader is getting confused about where the Windows partition is. Is there any information on how the Windows UEFI boot loader finds the Windows partition, or is there any logging I can turn on to help troubleshoot this issue?
