  • C# code to GZip and upload a string to Amazon S3

    - by BigJoe714
    Hello. I currently use the following code to retrieve and decompress string data from Amazon C#: GetObjectRequest getObjectRequest = new GetObjectRequest().WithBucketName(bucketName).WithKey(key); using (S3Response getObjectResponse = client.GetObject(getObjectRequest)) { using (Stream s = getObjectResponse.ResponseStream) { using (GZipStream gzipStream = new GZipStream(s, CompressionMode.Decompress)) { StreamReader Reader = new StreamReader(gzipStream, Encoding.Default); string Html = Reader.ReadToEnd(); parseFile(Html); } } } I want to reverse this code so that I can compress and upload string data to S3 without being written to disk. I tried the following, but I am getting an Exception: using (AmazonS3 client = Amazon.AWSClientFactory.CreateAmazonS3Client(AWSAccessKeyID, AWSSecretAccessKeyID)) { string awsPath = AWSS3PrefixPath + "/" + keyName+ ".htm.gz"; byte[] buffer = Encoding.UTF8.GetBytes(content); using (MemoryStream ms = new MemoryStream()) { using (GZipStream zip = new GZipStream(ms, CompressionMode.Compress)) { zip.Write(buffer, 0, buffer.Length); PutObjectRequest request = new PutObjectRequest(); request.InputStream = ms; request.Key = awsPath; request.BucketName = AWSS3BuckenName; using (S3Response putResponse = client.PutObject(request)) { //process response } } } } The exception I am getting is: Cannot access a closed Stream. What am I doing wrong?

  • VB6 ImageList Frm Code Generation

    - by DAC
    Note: This is probably a shot in the dark, and its purely out of curiosity that I'm asking. When using the ImageList control from the Microsoft Common Control lib (mscomctl.ocx) I have found that VB6 generates FRM code that doesn't resolve to real property/method names and I am curious as to how the resolution is made. An example of the generated FRM code is given below with an ImageList containing 3 images: Begin MSComctlLib.ImageList ImageList1 BackColor = -2147483643 ImageWidth = 100 ImageHeight = 45 MaskColor = 12632256 BeginProperty Images {2C247F25-8591-11D1-B16A-00C0F0283628} NumListImages = 3 BeginProperty ListImage1 {2C247F27-8591-11D1-B16A-00C0F0283628} Picture = "Form1.frx":0054 Key = "" EndProperty BeginProperty ListImage2 {2C247F27-8591-11D1-B16A-00C0F0283628} Picture = "Form1.frx":3562 Key = "" EndProperty BeginProperty ListImage3 {2C247F27-8591-11D1-B16A-00C0F0283628} Picture = "Form1.frx":6A70 Key = "" EndProperty EndProperty End From my experience, a BeginProperty tag typically means a compound property (an object) is being assigned to, such as the Font object of most controls, for example: Begin VB.Form Form1 Caption = "Form1" ClientHeight = 10950 ClientLeft = 60 ClientTop = 450 ClientWidth = 7215 BeginProperty Font Name = "MS Serif" Size = 8.25 Charset = 0 Weight = 400 Underline = 0 'False Italic = -1 'True Strikethrough = 0 'False EndProperty End Which can be easily seen to resolve to VB.Form.Font.<Property Name>. With ImageList, there is no property called Images. The GUID associated with property Images indicates type ListImages which implements interface IImages. This type makes sense, as the ImageList control has a property called ListImages which is of type IImages. Secondly, properties ListImage1, ListImage2 and ListImage3 don't exist on type IImages, but the GUID associated with these properties indicates type ListImage which implements interface IImage. This type also makes sense, as IImages is in fact a collection of IImage. What doesn't make sense to me is how VB6 makes these associations. How does VB6 know to make the association between the name Images - ListImages purely because of an associated type (provided by the GUID) - perhaps because it's the only property of that type? Secondly, how does it resolve ListImage1, ListImage2 and ListImage3 into additions to the collection IImages, and does it use the Add method? Or perhaps the ControlDefault property? Perhaps VB6 has specific knowledge of this control and no logical resolution exists?

  • Google maps API V3 code to V2 help.

    - by abemonkey
    I've started working on a project to inject markers into a map with jQuery by looping through rows on a table in the page. After getting it working I realized that I was accessing the V3 API and using V3 syntax. I've been beating my head against a wall trying to get this working in google maps API V2. If someone could please take a look at my code and help that would be great! Thanks! You can see my little test in action at www.axtsweapons.com/maptest.html. Here is the JS code: <script type="text/javascript"> $(function() { var latlng = new google.maps.LatLng(45.440000,-122.630000); var settings = { zoom: 12, center: latlng, disableDefaultUI: false, mapTypeControl:false, mapTypeId: google.maps.MapTypeId.ROADMAP }; var map = new google.maps.Map(document.getElementById("map_canvas"), settings); $('tr').each(function(i) { var the_marker = new google.maps.Marker({ title: $(this).find('.views-field-title').text(), map: map, clickable: true, position: new google.maps.LatLng( parseFloat($(this).find('.views-field-latitude').text()), parseFloat($(this).find('.views-field-longitude').text()) ) }); var bounds = new google.maps.LatLngBounds(); var infowindow = new google.maps.InfoWindow({ content: $(this).find('.views-field-title').text() + $(this).find('.adr').text() }); new google.maps.event.addListener(the_marker, 'click', function() { infowindow.close(); infowindow.open(map, the_marker); }); }); }); </script>

  • VS2008 javascript debugger IE8 "there is no source code available for the current location"

    - by Jeff Keslinke
    I have almost the same problem as this unanswered question. The only difference is I'm using VS2008, but I'm in an MVC project calling this javascript function: function CompanyChange(compCtrl) { alert(compCtrl.value); debugger; var test; for (var i = 0; i < document.all.length; i++) { test = document.all[i]; } } I hit the alert, then I get the message "there is no source code available for the current location." At which point the page becomes unresponsive and I have to manually stop the debugger just to shut it down. I've logged into another machine and ran this exact code and it works fine, I hit the debugger and can step through. I've checked to make sure all settings in VSToolsOptionsDebugging are identical as well as IEOptionsAdvanced and they are. Both machines are Windows 7 Enterprise edition 32-bit, VS2008, IE8. I've also tried attaching a process manually in VS, and using the 'Developer Tools' in IE which didn't work (said there already was a process attached). I was hoping someone may have had this problem and found a work-around because I've already done a lot of searching and tried all the options I've read. Anyone else run into this? Thank you, Jeff

  • How to prove writing specifications beats code cowboys?

    - by Andrew Grant
    So I have a problem. Or rather my friend has a problem, since I would never write about my company on an internet forum. At my friend's company specification writing is, shall we say, a little underused. There's a deeply ingrained culture of writing code first and asking questions later, whether it's for a library routine or a new tool to inflict on their long suffering designers. This of course leads to situations where functionality is partially correct, incorrect, or just completely missing ("oh, just save before trying anything you may want to undo"). This usually results in a loss of productivity for those poor designers, or beta periods where bug-fixing is largely spent implementing things correctly. My friend's found his suggestions of writing (and testing against) specifications to be generally well received. Most of his colleagues have embraced the wonderful feeling of discovering false-assumptions on paper, instead of at 11pm on a Sunday in the middle of beta. Viva La Revolution! However there are a few who poo-poo anything that stands between their task and a keyboard. They laugh at the thought of actually designing anything, and write code with merry abandon. Mostly these are senior, long employed developers, reluctant to "waste time". The problem is that this second group of heretics invariably produce things (or at least something) quicker than the first. Subsequently this becomes justification along the lines of "It's pointless to write specifications for something as simple as an image resizer! Oh and those bugs where width!=height or the image uses RLE just need a few tweaks". And now the question :) Other than saying "told you so" at the end of a project, what are some good short-term ways to demonstrate how the practice of writing functional or technical specifications leads to better software in the long run? Cheers!

  • QPrinter, QPrintDialog giving errors not encountered in code examples

    - by karunesh
    In the imageviewer example, QPainter and QPrintDialog objects are defined and used as following: #ifndef QT_NO_PRINTER QPrinter printer; #endif and QPrintDialog dialog(&printer, this); A QPainter object is then initialized with QPrinter (printer). When I tried to use the same code in my function, it looks like: void imageviewer::print() { ... #ifdef QT_NO_PRINTER QPrinter printer(this); //ERROR 1 QPrintDialog dialog(&printer, this);//ERROR 2 and 3 if (dialog.exec()) //ERROR 4 { //do the painting } #endif } The errors are: 1. variable 'QPrinter printer' has initializer but incomplete type 2. 'QPrintDialog' was not declared in this scope 3. Expected ';' before 'dialog' 4. 'dialog' was not declared in this scope What I am notable to understand is why are these errors arising when I am using them in my code, but not in the example. As a friend pointed out, I made sure that I used the right #include files and made sure that 'printer' and 'dialog' were not touched anywhere else in the example.

  • BreezingForms Integrator Finalize Code and $this->execPieceByName('ff_InitLib');

    - by nickyt
    I've started working on a Joomla! project (I'm mainly a C#/ASP.NET kind a guy). I'm using BreezingForms and have created forms, got them working, but now I need to do some additional code in the "Finalize Code" section. I need to access form elements via BreezingForms(FacileForms) API. Here's what I'm doing, but it chokes: $this->execPieceByName('ff_SubmitLib'); // Is this necessary? // load the standard Facile Forms library $this->execPieceByName('ff_InitLib'); // page breaks here. // get the name of the uploaded file $filename = ff_getSubmit('someUploadedFile'); Now I don't know what goes wrong. The page posts back blank. I'm not sure how to debug this in Joomla. I currently do not have access to the server to debug, so I would need to debug remotely at runtime (not ideal I know). My account is of type Administrator for the Joomla backend. As far as I know all the plugins/modules are installed. Any ideas?

  • Modify code to change timestamp timezone in sitemap

    - by Aahan Krish
    Below is the code from a plugin I use for sitemaps. I would like to know if there's a way to "enforce" a different timezone on all date variable and functions in it. If not, how do I modify the code to change the timestamp to reflect a different timezone? Say for example, to America/New_York timezone. Please look for date to quickly get to the appropriate code blocks. Code on Pastebin. <?php /** * @package XML_Sitemaps */ class WPSEO_Sitemaps { ..... /** * Build the root sitemap -- example.com/sitemap_index.xml -- which lists sub-sitemaps * for other content types. * * @todo lastmod for sitemaps? */ function build_root_map() { global $wpdb; $options = get_wpseo_options(); $this->sitemap = '<sitemapindex xmlns="http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/0.9">' . • Why is this code invalid in C#?

    - by mmattax
    The following code will not compile: string foo = "bar"; Object o = foo == null ? DBNull.Value : foo; I get: Error 1 Type of conditional expression cannot be determined because there is no implicit conversion between 'System.DBNull' and 'string' To fix this, I must do something like this: string foo = "bar"; Object o = foo == null ? DBNull.Value : (Object)foo; This cast seems pointless as this is certainly legal: string foo = "bar"; Object o = foo == null ? "gork" : foo; It seems to me that when the ternary branches are of different types, the compiler will not autobox the values to the type object...but when they are of the same type then the autoboxing is automatic. In my mind the first statement should be legal... Can anyone describe why the compiler does not allow this and why the designers of C# chose to do this? I believe this is legal in Java...Though I have not verified this. Thanks. EDIT: I am asking for an understanding of why Java and C# handle this differently, what is going on underneath the scenes in C# that make this invalid. I know how to use ternary, and am not looking for a "better way" to code the examples. I understand the rules of ternary in C#, but I want to know WHY... EDIT (Jon Skeet): Removed "autoboxing" tag as no boxing is involved in this question.

  • C# unit test code questions continue

    - by 5YrsLaterDBA
    more questions after questions in here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2714073/c-unit-test-code-questions I found the VS unit test testframe treat private and protected method in the same way but deferent with public method. The following is the generated code for a private method: /// <summary> ///A test for recordLogin ///</summary> [TestMethod()] [DeploymentItem("SystemSoftware.exe")] public void recordLoginTest() { User_Accessor target = new User_Accessor(); // TODO: Initialize to an appropriate value Guid userId = new Guid(); // TODO: Initialize to an appropriate value string action = string.Empty; // TODO: Initialize to an appropriate value Users user = null; // TODO: Initialize to an appropriate value AndeDBEntities db = null; // TODO: Initialize to an appropriate value bool expected = false; // TODO: Initialize to an appropriate value bool actual; actual = target.recordLogin(userId, action, user, db); Assert.AreEqual(expected, actual); Assert.Inconclusive("Verify the correctness of this test method."); } questions: [DeploymentItem("SystemSoftware.exe")] is for private and protected methods, why needs it and what is it for? In my original class/file, if I point to the original method and try to "Find All References". The reference in the unit test class/file will not show up for private and protected methods but it will show up for all public methods. Why is that? Is it right? 3.

  • sample java code for approximate string matching or boyer-moore extended for approximate string matc

    - by Dolphin
    Hi I need to find 1.mismatch(incorrectly played notes), 2.insertion(additional played), & 3.deletion (missed notes), in a music piece (e.g. note pitches [string values] stored in a table) against a reference music piece. This is either possible through exact string matching algorithms or dynamic programming/ approximate string matching algos. However I realised that approximate string matching is more appropriate for my problem due to identifying mismatch, insertion, deletion of notes. Or an extended version of Boyer-moore to support approx. string matching. Is there any link for sample java code I can try out approximate string matching? I find complex explanations and equations - but I hope I could do well with some sample code and simple explanations. Or can I find any sample java code on boyer-moore extended for approx. string matching? I understand the boyer-moore concept, but having troubles with adjusting it to support approx. string matching (i.e. to support mismatch, insertion, deletion). Also what is the most efficient approx. string matching algorithm (like boyer-moore in exact string matching algo)? Greatly appreciate any insight/ suggestions. Many thanks in advance

  • How can you change Network settings (IP Address, DNS, WINS, Host Name) with code in C#

    - by rathkopf
    I am developing a wizard for a machine that is to be used as a backup of other machines. When it replaces an existing machine, it needs to set its IP address, DNS, WINS, and host name to match the machine being replaced. Is there a library in .net (C#) which allows me to do this programatically? There are multiple NICs, each which need to be set individually. EDIT Thannk you TimothyP for your example. It got me moving on the right track and the quick reply was awesome. Thanks balexandre. Your code is perfect. I was in a rush and had already adapted the example TimothyP linked to, but I would have loved to have had your code sooner. I've also developed a routine using similar techniques for changing the computer name. I'll post it in the future so subscribe to this questions RSS feed if you want to be informed of the update. I may get it up later today or on Monday after a bit of cleanup.

  • Create a Desktop Shortcut to an existing FOLDER using WiX

    - by Sach
    I have the need to create a Desktop Shortcut to an existing FOLDER (NOT to a file) using Wix. To elaborate more, my installer program has a CustomAction program written using C# associated with it. This CustomAction program creates a folder named "BSS" of which the path is selected by user. C:\ProgramData\MT\BSS Now I need to place a Desktop Shortcut to this folder using WiX. However, I encounter a problem since this folder does not have a folder structure within WiX. The closest code I could find was the following. <Directory Id="DesktopFolder" Name="Desktop"/> <Directory Id="CommonAppDataFolder" Name="ProgramDataFolder"/> <Component Id="ComponentBSStrageShortcut" Guid="{8436995c-2e76-4030-b92d-c6b4bc243c43}"> <Shortcut Id="ShortcutBSStrageShortcut" Directory="DesktopFolder" WorkingDirectory="APPLICATIONFOLDER" Target="[CommonAppDataFolder]/MTK/BSStrage" Name="BSStrage" Show="normal"/> <RegistryValue Action="write" Key="SOFTWARE/MTK/BackStreet" Root="HKCU" Type="string" KeyPath="yes" Value="ApplicationFolderName"/> </Component> When I build the installer this way, it actually creates a shortcut on Desktop. However, WiX seems to think that BSStrage is a file/application so it places a shortcut to an imaginary application called BSStrage in the location C:\ProgramData\MT. But double clicking on it dosen't help as there is no program that can be used to open it. Obviously I'm doing it wrong here. Can someone please help me with this, so as how to overcome this problem. Note that I'm extremely new to Wix (it's been only two days) and has never worked with it before. Any code sample would be of great help.

  • Blackberry Apps - Importing a code-signed jar into an application project

    - by Eric Sniff
    Hi everyone, I'm working on a library project that Blackberry Java developers can import into their projects. It uses protected RIM APIs which require that it be code-signed, which I have done. But, I can't get my Jar imported and working with a simple helloWorld app. I'm using the eclipse plug-in Blackberry-JDE. Here is what I have tried: First: Building myLibProject with BlackBerry_JDE_PluginFull_1.0.0.67 into a JAR, signing it and importing it into a BlackBerry_JDE_PluginFull_1.0.0.67 application project -- I get a class not found error, while compiling the application project. Next: I imported myLibProject into an BlackBerry_JDE_PluginFull_1.1.1.* library project, built it into a jar, signed it and imported it into a BlackBerry_JDE_PluginFull_1.1.1.* application project. It built this time, but while loading up the simulator to test it I get the following error ( Access violation reading from 0xFFFFFFC ) before the simulator can loadup and it crashs the simulator. Other stuff I've tried: I also tried importing the jar into it's own project and having the HelloWorld app project reference that project. If I include the src in my application project it works fine... But Im looking for a way to deploy this as compiled code. Any Ideas? Or help?

  • What AOP tools exist for doing aspect-oriented programming at the assembly language level against x8

    - by JohnnySoftware
    Looking for a tool I can use to do aspect-oriented programming at the assembly language level. For experimentation purposes, I would like the code weaver to operate native application level executable and dynamic link libraries. I have already done object-oriented AOP. I know assembly language for x86 and so forth. I would like to be able to do logging and other sorts of things using the familiar before/after/around constructs. I would like to be able to specify certain instructions or sequences/patterns of consecutive instructions as what to do a pointcut on since assembly/machine language is not exactly the most semantically rich computer language on the planet. If debugger and linker symbols are available, naturally, I would like to be able to use them to identify subroutines' entry points , branch/call/jump target addresses, symbolic data addresses, etc. I would like the ability to send notifications out to other diagnostic tools. Thus, support for sending data through connection-oriented sockets and datagrams is highly desirable. So is normal logging to files, UI, etc. This can be done using the action part of an aspect to make a function call, but then there are portability issues so the tool needs to support a flexible, well-abstracted logging/notifying mechanism with a clean, simple yet flexible. The goal is rapid-QA. The idea is to be able to share aspect source code braodly within communties as well as publicly. So, there needs to be a declarative security policy file that users can share. This insures that nothing untoward that is hidden directly or indirectly in an aspect source file slips by the execution manager. The policy file format needs to be simple to read, write, modify, understand, type-in, edit, and generate. Sort of like Java .policy files. Think the exact opposite of anything resembling XML Schema files and you get the idea. Is there such a tool in existence already?

  • GCC emits extra code for boost::shared_ptr dereference

    - by Checkers
    I have the following code: #include <boost/shared_ptr.hpp> struct Foo { int a; }; static int A; void func_shared(const boost::shared_ptr<Foo> &foo) { A = foo->a; } void func_raw(Foo * const foo) { A = foo->a; } I thought the compiler would create identical code, but for shared_ptr version an extra seemingly redundant instruction is emitted. Disassembly of section .text: 00000000 <func_raw(Foo*)>: 0: 55 push ebp 1: 89 e5 mov ebp,esp 3: 8b 45 08 mov eax,DWORD PTR [ebp+8] 6: 5d pop ebp 7: 8b 00 mov eax,DWORD PTR [eax] 9: a3 00 00 00 00 mov ds:0x0,eax e: c3 ret f: 90 nop 00000010 <func_shared(boost::shared_ptr<Foo> const&)>: 10: 55 push ebp 11: 89 e5 mov ebp,esp 13: 8b 45 08 mov eax,DWORD PTR [ebp+8] 16: 5d pop ebp 17: 8b 00 mov eax,DWORD PTR [eax] 19: 8b 00 mov eax,DWORD PTR [eax] 1b: a3 00 00 00 00 mov ds:0x0,eax 20: c3 ret I'm just curious, is this necessary, or it is just an optimizer's shortcoming? Compiling with g++ 4.1.2, -O3 -NDEBUG.

  • Steps in creating a web service using Axis2 - The client code

    - by zengr
    I am trying to create a web service, my tools of trade are: ** Axis2, Eclipse, Tomcat, Ant ** I need to create a web service from Code, i.e. Write a basic java class which will have the methods to be declared in the WSDL. Then use java2WSDL.sh to create my WSDL. So, is this approach correct: Write my Java class with actual business logic package packageNamel; public class Hello{ public void World(String name) { SOP("Hello" + name); } } Now, when I pass this Hello.java to java2WSDL.sh, this will give me the WSDL. Finally, I will write the services.xml file, and create the Hello.aar with following dir structure: Hello.aar packageName Hello.class META-INF services.xml MANIFEST.MF Hello.WSDL Now, I assume, my service will be deployed when I put the aar in tomcat1/webapps/axis2/WEB-INF/services But, here comes my problem, HOW DO I ACCESS THE METHOD World(String name)???!!, i.e. I am clueless about the client code! Please enlighten me on making a very basic web service and calling the method. The above described 3 steps might be wrong. It's a community wiki, feel free to edit. Thanks

  • Perl program - Dynamic Bootstrapping code

    - by mgj
    Hi.. I need to understand the working of this particular program, It seems to be quite complicated, could you please see if you could help me understanding what this program in Perl does, I am a beginner so I hardly can understand whats happening in the code given on the following link below, Any kind of guidance or insights wrt this program is highly appreciated. Thank you...:) This program is called premove.pl.c Its associated with one more program premove.pl, Its code looks like this: #!perl open (newdata,">newdata.txt") || die("cant create new file\n");#create passwd file $linedata = ""; while($line=<>){ chomp($line); #chop($line); print newdata $line."\n"; } close(newdata); close(olddata); __END__ I am even not sure how to run the two programs mentioned here. I wonder also what does the extension of the first program signify as it has "pl.c" extension, please let me know if you know what it could mean. I need to understand it asap thats why I am posting this question, I am kind of short of time else I would try to figure it out myself, This seems to be a complex program for a beginner like me, hope you understand. Thank you again for your time.

  • Help me convert this PHP SOAP code to C#

    - by Andrew G. Johnson
    Hi, I am trying to do some C# SOAP calls and can't seem to get any good examples on how to do it. I read an old question of mine about a SOAP call in PHP and thought maybe asking you guys to rewrite it in C# would be a good place to start. Here is the PHP code: $client = new SoapClient('http://www.hotelscombined.com/api/LiveRates.asmx?WSDL'); $client->__soapCall('HotelSearch', array( array('request' => array( 'ApiKey' => 'THE_API_KEY_GOES_HERE', // note that in the actual code I put the API key in... 'UserID' => session_id(), 'UserAgent' => $_SERVER['HTTP_USER_AGENT'], 'UserIPAddress' => $_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR'], 'HotelID' => '50563', 'Checkin' => '07/02/2009', 'Checkout' => '07/03/2009', 'Guests' => '2', 'Rooms' => '1', 'LanguageCode' => 'en', 'DisplayCurrency' => 'usd', 'TimeOutInSeconds' => '90' ) ) ) );

  • How to analyze the efficiency of this algorithm Part 2

    - by Leonardo Lopez
    I found an error in the way I explained this question before, so here it goes again: FUNCTION SEEK(A,X) 1. FOUND = FALSE 2. K = 1 3. WHILE (NOT FOUND) AND (K < N) a. IF (A[K] = X THEN 1. FOUND = TRUE b. ELSE 1. K = K + 1 4. RETURN Analyzing this algorithm (pseudocode), I can count the number of steps it takes to finish, and analyze its efficiency in theta notation, T(n), a linear algorithm. OK. This following code depends on the inner formulas inside the loop in order to finish, the deal is that there is no variable N in the code, therefore the efficiency of this algorithm will always be the same since we're assigning the value of 1 to both A & B variables: 1. A = 1 2. B = 1 3. UNTIL (B > 100) a. B = 2A - 2 b. A = A + 3 Now I believe this algorithm performs in constant time, always. But how can I use Algebra in order to find out how many steps it takes to finish?

  • Conditions with common logic: question of style, readability, efficiency, ...

    - by cdonner
    I have conditional logic that requires pre-processing that is common to each of the conditions (instantiating objects, database lookups etc). I can think of 3 possible ways to do this, but each has a flaw: Option 1 if A prepare processing do A logic else if B prepare processing do B logic else if C prepare processing do C logic // else do nothing end The flaw with option 1 is that the expensive code is redundant. Option 2 prepare processing // not necessary unless A, B, or C if A do A logic else if B do B logic else if C do C logic // else do nothing end The flaw with option 2 is that the expensive code runs even when neither A, B or C is true Option 3 if (A, B, or C) prepare processing end if A do A logic else if B do B logic else if C do C logic end The flaw with option 3 is that the conditions for A, B, C are being evaluated twice. The evaluation is also costly. Now that I think about it, there is a variant of option 3 that I call option 4: Option 4 if (A, B, or C) prepare processing if A set D else if B set E else if C set F end end if D do A logic else if E do B logic else if F do C logic end While this does address the costly evaluations of A, B, and C, it makes the whole thing more ugly and I don't like it. How would you rank the options, and are there any others that I am not seeing?

  • jQuery simplifying code (beginner)

    - by Jonny Wood
    I'm getting to grips with jQuery but find myself repeating code over and over again... Surely there's a simpler way to write this: $('#more-mcr, #more-hilton, #more-lpool').hide(); $('#mcr-hatters').hoverIntent(function() { $('#mcr-hilton').stop().animate({opacity: 0.4}); $('#more-mcr').fadeIn({duration:200}); }, function() { $('#mcr-hilton').stop().animate({opacity: 1}); $('#more-mcr').fadeOut({duration:200}); }); $('#mcr-hilton').hoverIntent(function() { $('#mcr-hatters').stop().animate({opacity: 0.4}); $('#more-hilton').fadeIn({duration:200}); }, function() { $('#mcr-hatters').stop().animate({opacity: 1}); $('#more-hilton').fadeOut({duration:200}); }); $('#lpool-hostel').hoverIntent(function() { $('#more-lpool').fadeIn({duration:200}); }, function() { $('#more-lpool').fadeOut({duration:200}); }); $('#offers-mcr').hoverIntent(function() { $('#offers-lpool').stop().animate({opacity: 0.4}); $('#offers-bham').stop().animate({opacity: 0.4}); }, function() { $('#offers-lpool').stop().animate({opacity: 1}); $('#offers-bham').stop().animate({opacity: 1}); }); $('#offers-lpool').hoverIntent(function() { $('#offers-mcr').stop().animate({opacity: 0.4}); $('#offers-bham').stop().animate({opacity: 0.4}); }, function() { $('#offers-mcr').stop().animate({opacity: 1}); $('#offers-bham').stop().animate({opacity: 1}); }); $('#offers-bham').hoverIntent(function() { $('#offers-lpool').stop().animate({opacity: 0.4}); $('#offers-mcr').stop().animate({opacity: 0.4}); }, function() { $('#offers-lpool').stop().animate({opacity: 1}); $('#offers-mcr').stop().animate({opacity: 1}); }); I'd also like to set the delay for hoverIntent but I don't think this is possible with the way I've written the code currently...?

  • [Cocoa] Can't find leak in my code.

    - by ryyst
    Hi, I've been spending the last few hours trying to find the memory leak in my code. Here it is: NSAutoreleasePool *pool = [[NSAutoreleasePool alloc] init]; expression = [expression stringByTrimmingCharactersInSet: [NSCharacterSet whitespaceAndNewlineCharacterSet]]; // expression is an NSString object. NSArray *arguments = [NSArray arrayWithObjects:expression, [@"~/Desktop/file.txt" stringByExpandingTildeInPath], @"-n", @"--line-number", nil]; NSPipe *outPipe = [[NSPipe alloc] init]; NSTask *task = [[NSTask alloc] init]; [task setLaunchPath:@"/usr/bin/grep"]; [task setArguments:arguments]; [task setStandardOutput:outPipe]; [outPipe release]; [task launch]; NSData *data = [[outPipe fileHandleForReading] readDataToEndOfFile]; [task waitUntilExit]; [task release]; NSString *string = [[NSString alloc] initWithBytes:[data bytes] length:[data length] encoding:NSUTF8StringEncoding]; string = [string stringByReplacingOccurrencesOfString:@"\r" withString:@""]; int linesNum = 0; NSMutableArray *possibleMatches = [[NSMutableArray alloc] init]; if ([string length] > 0) { NSArray *lines = [string componentsSeparatedByString:@"\n"]; linesNum = [lines count]; for (int i = 0; i < [lines count]; i++) { NSString *currentLine = [lines objectAtIndex:i]; NSArray *values = [currentLine componentsSeparatedByString:@"\t"]; if ([values count] == 20) [possibleMatches addObject:currentLine]; } } [string release]; [pool release]; return [possibleMatches autorelease]; I tried to follow the few basic rules of Cocoa memory management, but somehow there still seems to be a leak, I believe it's an array that's leaking. It's noticeable if possibleMatches is large. You can try the code by using any large file as "~/Desktop/file.txt" and as expression something that yields many results when grep-ing. What's the mistake I'm making? Thanks for any help! -- Ry
