• Thunderbird message sorting - wrong dates

  Thunderbird 3 is having a problem with one of my IMAP accounts. When sorted by date, it displays 10-15 messages at the top (newest) when in fact they are very old message. (pre-2010, over a year old, some up to 6-7 years old) It's not game-breaking, but it is annoying, as I have to look past those to check for "new" messages. Is there any way to fix this? I'd considered re-downloading all the messages via IMAP, but that would take weeks (50,000 messages). When I open it, it displays the correct date, also when I use "View Source" the Date: header has the correct date (2009, 2006, etc). Is there any way to make Thunderbird realize that it should be sorted down with the rest of the 2006/2009 messages? None of my other IMAP accounts (many with the same host server) have this issue.

  i have a biztalk - window service tied middleware application which talks to other system. recently we had a request to test for scenarios which relates to the date. as we have a lot of places in the application which uses the .net Datetime.Now value, we don't really want to go into the code level and change all these values. so we're looking at the simplest way to test which is to just change the OS time. but what we notice is that sometimes when we change the system date time, we will get account lock out due to Active Directory. So my question is what's a good and safe way that i can test for future dates, etc by changing the windows OS system date time but without causing any issues with the Active Directory. And where can i find out more about AD and how it issues token and what's the correlation with the system date time changes. Thanks! ~m

  Sorry for the confusing question, I'm not sure how to word it right: here's a mock sample of my data Name: Cheeseburger Date: 1/20/2011 Stock: 30 Price: 200 Name: Hamburger Date: 1/20/2011 Stock: 12 Price: 180 Name: Cheeseburger Date: 1/21/2011 Stock: 31 Price: 210 ... I will have to make a table in excel or access capable of looking up the stock and price trends of a particular brand through time. Trouble is, I have two independent variables (Stock, Price) and two known dependent variables (Name, Date). So, I cannot use a simple table where the x axis is the name, y axis is the time, and the cells represent a quantity - each cell have to represent two quantities (Stock, Price) Does anyone know how to do that?   I'd like to know if there is a way to highlight dates that differs from one another. I have two columns "Baseline Finish Date" and "Re-forecast Finish Date" and I would like to highlight the dates that for each task, is different in those columns. Meaning the tasks that suffered a re-forecast due to other circumstances, and does not equal to the original dates. I also would like a filter that does the same thing as above, showing only this different date tasks.

• jQuery DatePicker - 'fake' click on page load

  Hey! I've got a quick question about the jQuery UI DatePicker. When I load the page, defaultDate: 0 will work fine with selecting the current day's date. I would like to create a 'fake' click on the date so it will execute my JavaScript function and retrieve information from the database. • Compiler issues on VC++ 2008 Express, Seemingly correct code throws errors.

  Hi there, I've been trying to get back into coding for a while, so I figured I'd start with some simple SDL, now, without the file i/o, this compiles fine, but when I throw in the stdio code, it starts throwing errors. This I'm not sure about, I don't see any problem with the code itself, however, like I said, I might as well be a newbie, and figured I'd come here to get someone with a little more experience with this type of thing to look at it. • How to handle recurring dates (dates only) in .NET?

  I am trying to figure out a good way to handle recurring events in .NET, specifically for an ASP.NET MVC application. The idea is that a user can create an event and specify that the event can occur repeatedly after a specific interval (e.g. "every two weeks", "once a month" and so on). What would be the best way to tackle this? My brainstorming right now is to have two tables: Job and RecurringJob. Job is the "master" record and has the description of the job as well a key to what customer it's for, while RecurringJob links back to Job and has additional info on what the occurrence frequency is (e.g. 1 for "once a month") as well as the timespan (e.g. "Weekly", "Monthly"). The issue is how to determine and set the next occurrence of the job since this will have to be something that's done regularly. I've seen two trains of thought with this: This logic should either be stored in a database column and periodically updated, or calculated on the fly in the code. Any thoughts or suggestions on tackling this? Edit: this is for a subscription based web app I'm creating to let service businesses schedule their common recurring jobs easily and track their customers. So a typical use might be to create a "Cut lawn" job for Mr Smith that occurs every month The exact date isn't important - it's the ability for the customer to see that Mr Smith gets his lawn cut every month and followup with him about it. Let me rephrase the above to better convey my idea. A sample use case for the application might be as follows: User pulls up the customer record for John Smith and clicks the Add Job link. The user fills out the form to create a job with a name of "Cut lawn", a start date of 11/15/2009, and selects a checkbox indicating that this job continually occurs. The user is presented with a secondary screen asking for the job frequency. The user indicates (haven't decided how at this point - let's assume select lists) that the job occurs once a month. User clicks save. Now, when the user views the record for John Smith, they can see that he has a job, "Cut lawn", that occurs every month starting from 11/15/2009. On the main dashboard when it's one week prior to the assumed start date, the user sees the job displayed with an indicator such as "12/15/2009 - Cut lawn (John Smith)". A week before the due date someone from the company calls him up to schedule and he says he's going to be out of town until 1/1/2010, so he wants his appointment rescheduled for that date. Our user can change the date for the job to be 1/1/2010, and now the recurrence will start one month from that date (e.g. next time will be 2/1/2010). The idea behind this is that the app is targeting businesses like lawn care, plumbers, carpet cleaners and the like where the exact date isn't as important (because it can and will change as people are busy), the key thing is to give the business an indicator that Mr. Smith's monthly service is coming up, and someone should give him a call to determine when exactly it can be scheduled for. In effect give these businesses a way to track repeat business and know when it's time to followup with a customer.

• Help with a simple incremental backup script

  I'd like to run the following incomplete script weekly in as a cron job to backup my home directory to an external drive mounted as /mnt/backups #!/bin/bash # TIMEDATE=$(date +%b-%d-%Y-%k:%M) LASTBACKUP=pathToDirWithLastBackup rsync -avr --numeric-ids --link-dest=$LASTBACKUP /home/myfiles /mnt/backups/myfiles$TIMEDATE My first question is how do I correctly set LASTBACKUP to the the the directory in /backs most recently created? Secondly, I'm under the impression that using --link-desk will mean that files in previous backups will not will not copied in later backups if they still exist but will rather symbolically link back to the originally copied files? However, I don't want to retain old files forever. What would be the best way to remove all the backups before a certain date without losing files that may think linked in those backups by currents backups? Basically I'm looking to merge all the files before a certain date to a certain date if that makes more sense than the way I initially framed the question :). Can --link-dest create hard links, and if so, just deleting previous directories wouldn't actually remove linked file? Finally I'd like to add a line to my script that compresses each newly created backup folder (/mnt/backups/myfiles$TIMEDATE). Based on reading this question, I was wondering if I could just use this line gzip --rsyncable /backups/myfiles$TIMEDATE after I run rsync so that sequential rsync --link-dest executions would find already copied and compressed files? I know that's a lot, so many thanks in advance for your help!!

It would eventually start working after I messed around with the audio settings, but it happened every restart. I eventually switched to SMPlayer, but now I need some of the features that VLC offers, but I still can't use VLC. At this point, the audio can not be heard at all, and the method I used before, messing around with the audio settings, isn't getting me anywhere. This Delphi system (multiple projects) utilizes the SQL Server database using ADO components, VCL data-aware controls, and QuickReports (using data sources). So, there's many places where the data goes directly from the database query to rendering on the screen, without any code to actually put this data on the screen. In the end, I need to know when and how should I get the properly converted time? There must be a standard method for this, and I'm hoping SQL Server 2008 R2 has this covered...

• Advice for Storing and Displaying Dates and Times Across Different Time Zones

  A common question I receive from clients, colleagues, and 4Guys readers is for recommendations on how best to store and display dates and times in a data-driven web application. One of the challenges in storing and displaying dates in a web application is that it is quite likely that the visitors arriving at your site are not in the same time zone as your web server; moreover, it's very likely that your site attracts visitors from many different time zones from around the world. Consider an online messageboard site, like ASPMessageboard.com, where each of 1,000,000+ posts includes the date and time it was made. Imagine a user from New York leaves a post on April 7th at 4:30 PM and that the web server hosting the site is located in Dallas, Texas, which is one hour earlier than New York. When storing that post to the database do you record the post's date and time relative to the visitor (4:30 PM), the relative to the web server (3:30 PM), or some other value? And when displaying this post how do you show that date and time to a reader in San Francisco, which is three hours earlier than New York? Do you show the time relative to the person who made the post (4:30 PM), relative to the web server (3:30 PM), or relative to the user (1:30 PM)? And if you decide to store or display the date based on the poster's or visitor's time zone then how do you know their time zone and its offset? How do you account for daylight savings, and so on? • How to build Gantt chart from a set of Redmine tickets without filling dates in all of them?

  Redmine 1.1.1 I've created a set of tickets for a new project. In each issue I filled Subject, Description and Estimated time fields. I also filled blocks/blocked by dependencies in Related issues. But the Gantt chart for this project is empty (that is, it contains all the tasks, but does not contain any "bars" for them). I need to get a Gantt chart (or any other visual representation) to show to other project members. I'd hate to type all that information again into OpenProj. Is there a way to get a serviceable Gantt chart from the Redmine? Update: In the answers below I read that to get working Gantt chart I have to input start date and due date manually for each issue. I believe that this information should be inferred automatically from start date of first ticket (first — depenency-wise), estimated time of each ticket, dependency graph, resource assignment and working hours calendar. Just as it happens in any minimally sane Gantt chart project management tool. To enter this information by hand and to keep it up-to-date manually as the project evolves is insane waste of time. Is there a way to generate Gantt chart from the set of Redmine tickets without filling in all this information manually? (Solutions involving data export + import in sane tool or involving existing plugins are perfectly acceptable.)

• More Denali Execution Plan Warning Goodies

  In my last blog, I showed how the execution plan in denali has been enhanced by 2 new warnings ,conversion affecting cardinality and conversion affecting seek, which are shown when a data type conversion has happened either implicitly or explicitly. That is not all though, there is more .  Also added are two warnings when performance has been affected due to memory issues. Memory spills to tempdb are a costly operation and happen when SqlServer is under memory pressure and needs to free some up. For a long time you have been able to see these as warnings in a profiler trace as a sort or hash warning event,  but now they are included right in the execution plan.  Not only that but also you can see which operator caused the spill , not just which statement.  Pretty damn handy. Another cause of performance problems relating to memory are memory grant waits.  Here is an informative write up on them,  but simply speaking , SQLServer has to allocate a certain amount of memory for each statement. If it is unable to you get a “memory grant wait”.  Once again there are other methods of analyzing these,  but the plan now shows these too. Don't worry that’s not real production code There is one other new warning that is of interest to me, “Unmatched Indexes”.  Once I find out the conditions under which that fires ill blog about it.
